Plants were collected at selected stations along the river in West Virginia and at Glen Lyn, Virginia.. The collections were made seasonally (early spring, late spring, summer, and fall) for a period of three years. In general, the nomenclature follows that of "Gray's Manual of Botany," "Flora of West Virginia," and "Shrubs of West Virginia." Organized in March 1936 at a convention in Buffalo, New York, the Nazi-inspired German American Bund began its short and stormy existence by seeking to unite the entire German American community under its direction. The Bund had been preceded by numerous Nazi splinter groups and an organization known as the Friends of the New Germany. The chief distinction between the Bund and its predecessors was the requirement that only American citizens could hold leadership positions in the organization. A theory of rate Independent material response is developed In conjunction with a functional Integral approximation. The linear term of this approximation Is used to represent the mechanical behavior of reactor grade polycrystalline graphite. The constitutive relation ls then applied to the case of one dimensional cyclic straining. A general three dimensional rate independent constitutive theory for the mechanical behavior of graphite is also developed. This theory Is then analyzed with respect to the available cyclic loading data obtained from uniaxial experiments.

In a study with variation of the ylid-nitrobenzene ratio and subsequent treatment with air, the optimum reaction conditions for the methylation of nitrobenzene with dimethyloxosulfonium ylid were found to be an 8-fold molar excess of methylid over nitrobenzene, and initial reaction for 15 minutes in an atmosphere of nitrogen, followed IX by passing air through the reaction mixture for 5 hours prior to work-up. With these experimental conditions the nitrotoluene yield was increased from 17$ to 40–50$, dialkylation was observed, and essentially no nitrobenzene was recovered.

In this work an attempt was made to synthesize a species containing two benzocyclobutenyl groups in one molecule. It would be of interest to compare the properties and reactivity of such a compound and its percursors with those of benzocyclobutene itself, and its precursors. A number of substituted benzocyclobutenes have been reported in the literature, including benzo [1,2:4,5'] dicyclobutene with two fused fourmembered rings.No compound has been reported, however, with two benzocyclobutenyl groups in one molecule.

The effects of parameter variation and uncertainty on optimal process design have been studied. Equations necessary for determining the sensitivity of optimal system performance to parameter variation are derived. Design criteria have been developed for optimal design of systems that are either sensitive to parameter variation or involving parameter uncertainty. The sensitivity equations for systems described by algebraic, differential, and difference equations are derived based on the Lagrange multiplier method, Pontryagin's maximum principle, and the discrete version of the maximum principle, respectively. Comparative rates of the free radical addition of mercaptoacetic acid to substituted phenylcyclohexenes have been studied with special reference to the activities of the olefins against Lewis Lung Carcinoma, Sarcoma 180, Lymphoid Leukemia and KB Cultures. All cancer screening data were supplied by the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center at the National Cancer Center. The rates of addition of mercaptoacetic acid to substituted phenylcyclohexenes were determined by measuring the amount of unreacted mercaptoacetic acid by iodine titration. The reaction was studied at 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 thlol:olefin molar ratios. At a 2:1 ratio the rates were approximately doubled and at …

The nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet spectra of these compounds are discussed with respect to possible ring strain in the thiophene nucleus. Several new 2,3“disubstituted thiophene derivatives are also reported. Ethyl 2-amino-4H-indeno [l,2-bJthiophene-3-carboxylate and ethyl 2-amino-8H-indeno£2,l-bJthiophene-3“carbo:xylate were prepared. Attempts to remove the amino and ester functions of the latter oompaund were unsuccessful. 8H-Indeno[2,1-bjthiophene was prepared in good yield in a four step synthesis. The Great Valley (Shenandoah Valley) of eastern West Virginia is the northern extension of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and marks the eastern limit of the Valley and Ridge physiographic province. The valley is underlain by nonresistant carbonate rocks and shales of Cambrian and Ordovician age, which have been eroded to produce a relatively flat to rolling terrain. The surface geology of the Great Valley is dominated by the north-northeast trending Massanutten synclinorium. A detailed investigation of the geology of the southern one-half of the Millerstown, Pennsylvania 15 Minute Topographic Quandrangle was conducted during 1956-1957. This report of the work contains a description of the Silurian, Devonian, and Mississippian formations which crop out in the area. The complex folding and faulting of the sediments is outlined in a section on structural geology. A number of anticlines and synclines, not previously mapped, are described.

This thesis is an analysis of Negro-white contacts within the city limits of Morgantown, West Virginia.

The specific hypothesis is that contacts which Negroes have with whites vary in frequency and intensity according to the institutional or neighborhood settings in which they occur, and with the age and sex of the individuals involved.

A supplementary thesis is that the attitudes of Negroes toward whites are conditioned by the contacts they have with whites.

The investigative techniques employed were those of personal interview, schedule and first hand observation of the author.

A petrographic study was made of two Lower Permian (Dunkard Series) sandstones in southeastern Ohio. The sandstone members with which the investigation was concerned are the Upper Marietta sandstone and the Hundred sandstone. The study was made in order to determine the origin of the sandstones and the practicability of applying geologic methods to the grindstone industry. The results of the study indicate that although some of the constituents of these sandstones were derived from igneous and sedimentary source rocks, a relatively large amount of material was derived from metamorphic rocks.
