Facies Analysis Of The Devonian Gordon Stray Sandstone In West Virginia, Patrick S. Mcbride May 2004

Facies Analysis Of The Devonian Gordon Stray Sandstone In West Virginia, Patrick S. Mcbride

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since its discovery in 1895, West Virginia's Jacksonburg-Stringtown field has had a primary production of 20 million barrels of oil. Based on 10 full-bore cores from Wetzel and Tyler Counties, the reservoir---the Gordon Stray Sandstone---is interpreted to be part of a barrier-island complex, comprising (from bottom to top) lower-shoreface, upper-shoreface, and foreshore sandstone. Tying core interpretations to 123 well logs across the field enables the various facies to be mapped. The major pay zone occurs stratigraphically within the middle of the shoreface facies, a medium-grained, well sorted sandstone. The barrier-island then prograded rapidly westward, laying down a thin sandstone. Mapping …

Factors Influencing Older Adult Collaboration On Health Problems, Kelly L. Snyder May 2004

Factors Influencing Older Adult Collaboration On Health Problems, Kelly L. Snyder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The current study examined the factors (i.e., gender, marital status, domain and severity of the problem) that influence older adults' strategy ratings on health-related problems. One hundred twenty-eight community-dwelling adults aged 60 and older (M = 71.4 years, SD = 7.21) rated strategies to solve four hypothetical health problems in two domains: heart, arthritis (one mild problem and one severe problem in each domain). Overall, results suggest that gender and marital status, as well as the domain, and severity of health problems impact older adults' rating of strategies to solve health-related problems. The effects of gender, marital status and severity …

Software For Efficient File Elimination In Computer Forensics Investigations, Chad Werner Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Computer forensics investigators, much more than with any other forensic discipline, must process an ever continuing increase of data. Fortunately, computer processing speed has kept pace and new processes are continuously being automated to sort through the voluminous amount of data. There exists an unfulfilled need for a simple, streamlined, standalone public tool for automating the computer forensics analysis process for files on a hard disk drive under investigation. A software tool has been developed to dramatically reduce the number of files that an investigator must individually examine. This tool utilizes the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National …

Breaking Boundaries, Juan Giraldo May 2004

Breaking Boundaries, Juan Giraldo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Graphic design communication is in constant change. Everyday new technologies emerge and evolve, affecting the way we communicate and deliver messages. For this reason, graphic designers should be able to understand the basic principles of design and effectively apply them to any media. It is my intention with this thesis to analyze the way I work in the design process, my influences, and also, why I make specific decisions based on different media. To illustrate these concepts I will discuss the body of work presented in my thesis exhibition: Breaking Boundaries.

Software Architectural Risk Assessment, Ajith Reddy Guedem May 2004

Software Architectural Risk Assessment, Ajith Reddy Guedem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Risk assessment is an essential part of the software development life cycle. Performing risk analysis early in the life cycle enhances resource allocation decisions, enables us to compare alternative software architectural designs and helps in identifying high-risk components in the system. As a result, remedial actions to control and optimize the process and improve the quality of the software product can be taken. In this thesis we investigate two types of risk---reliability-based and performance-based risk. The reliability-based risk assessment takes into account the probability of the failures and the severity of failures. For the reliability-based risk analysis we use UML …

Comparison Of Partially Decoupled And Combined Methods Of Path Planning And Task Allocation, Jennifer Beth Hazelton May 2004

Comparison Of Partially Decoupled And Combined Methods Of Path Planning And Task Allocation, Jennifer Beth Hazelton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Developing autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) reduces the risks to which soldiers are subjected by enabling the UAVs to make efficient decisions, regardless of the situation. This requires each group of UAVs to be proficient in planning their own paths and assigning tasks in a way that minimizes the total cost of the mission. Two methods are presented for doing this, the partially decoupled approach and the combined approach. After comparing two methods, the partially decoupled approach costs an average of 3.0 meters less than the combined approach, while taking an average of 0.327 seconds longer to complete. This indicates …

Uncertainty Analysis In Software Reliability Of Component-Based Systems, Sunil Kumar Kamavaram May 2004

Uncertainty Analysis In Software Reliability Of Component-Based Systems, Sunil Kumar Kamavaram

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Several architecture-based software reliability models were proposed in the past. These models compute the point estimate of system reliability by plugging point estimates of unknown parameters into the model. These models however, discard the uncertainty of the parameters, that is, they do not attempt to answer the question how parameter uncertainties propagate into overall system reliability. Therefore, the traditional way of estimating software reliability by plugging point estimates may not be appropriate. This thesis is focused on uncertainty analysis of architecture-based software reliability models. In particular, we present uncertainty analysis using the following methods: entropy, perturbation theory, method of moments …

Analysis Of Composite Moving Beams Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Govindan Nagappan May 2004

Analysis Of Composite Moving Beams Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Govindan Nagappan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A Composite beam moving longitudinally over its supports is analyzed based on a higher-order shear deformation theory. The dynamic behavior of the beam is carried out using the finite element method. The formulation is based on a variational principle. The essential constraints are applied via Lagrange multipliers. This method is effective for the moving beam problem where the relative support locations change with time and therefore the supports do not fall exactly at the nodes. An initially deformed overhang beam moving over two simple supports is used for the analysis. The first flexural mode shape of the beam is used …

Current Issues In Empirical Trade Estimation, Matthew Quinn Mcpherson May 2004

Current Issues In Empirical Trade Estimation, Matthew Quinn Mcpherson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study of empirical trade estimation has been a staple in international economics literature since the early 1960s. I focus on three current topics in empirical trade estimation. In chapter 1, I use a time-series approach and in the context of the effect of exchange-rate volatility on trade, provide both theoretical and empirical explanations for positive volatility effects. My results show a clear pattern; when the effect of exchange-rate uncertainty on trade volume is positive [negative] for importers, the effect for exporters is negative [positive]. In addition, the U.K. provides evidence that trade balance is an important factor in determining …

Mechanisms Of Retroviral Reverse Transcription And Assembly, Sara Kirsten Rasmussen May 2004

Mechanisms Of Retroviral Reverse Transcription And Assembly, Sara Kirsten Rasmussen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The work described in these dissertation studies examines three aspects of retrovirus replication and dissects the uncovered phenomena to increase understanding of how retroviruses thrive in complex host environments. The first aspect of replication discussed is the mechanisms behind minus-strand DNA transfer, a crucial step of reverse transcription. We proved for the first time that non-viral sequences can be utilized to carry out this step of the replication process, and that the minus-strand DNA transfer step can be exploited to reconstitute a functional gene in the infected host cell. This finding serves as a proof-of-principle for a new class of …

Tests For Causes Of Rarity In Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis L.), Suzanne Sanders May 2004

Tests For Causes Of Rarity In Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis L.), Suzanne Sanders

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hydrastis canadensis L. (goldenseal) is becoming more uncommon within the eastern deciduous forest. I performed a series of studies that tested hypotheses about population decline and causes of rarity. First, I assessed the time-trend of a natural H. canadensis population in an Indiana nature preserve which had been censused 26 years prior. We found a negative population trajectory between the two time periods. The second goal of this dissertation was to determine the breeding system of H. canadensis. The breeding system type appears unlikely to be a major factor limiting the distribution or abundance of H. canadensis. My third objective …

Effects Of Schedule Segmentation On Pausing And Escape In The Transitions Between Favorable And Unfavorable Schedules Of Reinforcement, Tammy R. Wade May 2004

Effects Of Schedule Segmentation On Pausing And Escape In The Transitions Between Favorable And Unfavorable Schedules Of Reinforcement, Tammy R. Wade

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Simple schedules of reinforcement typically are preferred to chained schedules of equal duration. In the current study, pigeons served in six experiments designed to test whether the juxtaposition of simple and chained schedules would engender the disruption in behavior typically observed in the transition from favorable to unfavorable conditions of reinforcement. In one set of experiments, a multiple schedule was employed in which a simple schedule alternated irregularly with a chained schedule. Whether fixed-ratio or fixed-interval schedules were employed, only half the subjects paused for an extended duration in the simple-to-chain transition, and this occurred only when the first segment …
