Effects Of Elevated Temperature On Panax Quinquefolius Ecophysiology And Pharmacological Activity On Human Breast Mcf-7 Carcinoma Cells, Gera M. Jochum Aug 2005

Effects Of Elevated Temperature On Panax Quinquefolius Ecophysiology And Pharmacological Activity On Human Breast Mcf-7 Carcinoma Cells, Gera M. Jochum

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of increased temperatures associated with climate change on an understory medicinal herb, Panax quinquefolius. Three-year old P. quinquefolius were grown in a greenhouse at low (25°C day/20°C night) or elevated (30°C/25°C) temperatures for one growing season. Elevated temperatures decreased photosynthesis and accelerated leaf senescence. At the end of the growing season, biomass was detrimentally affected by increased temperatures; yet the concentration of root ginsenosides, secondary metabolites thought to be the primary pharmacological components, was higher in plants grown in the elevated temperature treatment than in plants grown in the low …

The Effect And Mechanism Of Action Of Volatile Fatty Acids On The Catabolism Of Progesterone, Darron Louis Smith Aug 2005

The Effect And Mechanism Of Action Of Volatile Fatty Acids On The Catabolism Of Progesterone, Darron Louis Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Factors that affect the clearance of progesterone by the hepatocyte were examined. In study one, the objective was to determine if increased hepatic portal acetate or propionate could alter hepatic metabolism of progesterone. Serum concentrations of progesterone after an oral gavage of either acetate or propionate began to diverge as early as 0.5 h and were different (P < 0.05) at 3-h and 4-h for ewe lambs gavaged with acetate or propionate, respectively. Increasing portal vein propionate reduced progesterone clearance. In study two, the objective was to determine the effect of a single oral gavage of either acetate or propionate on peripheral concentrations of insulin and glucagon in the ewe. Serum concentrations of insulin, after an oral gavage of either acetate or propionate, were different (P < 0.05) at 0.5 h and 1 h for ewe lambs orally-gavaged with acetate and propionate, respectively. Further, serum concentrations of glucagon, after an oral gavage of either acetate or propionate, were different (P < 0.05) at 0.5 h, 1 h and 2 h for ewe lambs orally-gavaged with acetate and propionate, respectively. The last study determined progesterone clearance in response to challenge with different concentrations of insulin, glucagon or a combination of insulin and glucagon in a hepatic cell line. In response to a challenge with insulin, there was a dose dependant decrease in the disappearance of progesterone. There was a reduction (P < 0.05) in the rate of decay with the addition of 0.1 nM insulin. Further, there was a greater reduction (P < 0.05) in the rate of decay in response to 1.0 and 10 nM insulin than control and 0.1 nM insulin. There was no observable change in the disappearance of progesterone with either physiological (0.01 nM) or pharmacological (0.1 and 1.0 nM) treatment with glucagon. Pharmocological concentrations of glucagon (1.0 nM) negated the effects of either 0.1 or 1.0 nM insulin on the clearance of progesterone. However, with physiological concentrations of glucagon (0.01 nM) and 1.0 nM insulin, glucagon was not able to negate the reduction in progesterone disappearance caused by insulin.

Effect Of Liquid Rheology On Jetting Of Polymer Solutions, Long Han Aug 2005

Effect Of Liquid Rheology On Jetting Of Polymer Solutions, Long Han

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Light Emitting Devices (LEDs) containing conjugated polymers are fabricated using ink jet printing. A common problem in the processing of these materials is that the Newtonian viscosity of the polymer solution is not sufficient to describe the jetting performance, because the molecular weights and concentrations employed are such that the resulting solutions are elastic. These differences in fluid elasticity levels cannot be measured using traditional techniques like dynamic mechanical experiments or the first normal stress difference in shear, but they strongly impact the jetting behavior of the liquid. Here, a polystyrene-DECALIN system has been formulated, and the level of elasticity …

Exploring Differences In Level Of Involvement, Educational Outcomes, And Satisfaction Of Resident Students And Commuter Students At A Rural Community College, Richard Wayne Layman Aug 2005

Exploring Differences In Level Of Involvement, Educational Outcomes, And Satisfaction Of Resident Students And Commuter Students At A Rural Community College, Richard Wayne Layman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Because the vast majority of community colleges were founded to serve commuter students who live within a local and regional area, student residential housing at two-year institutions has been seen as unnecessary. However, an increasing number of community colleges are opening student resident housing. In contrast to all the research available about the impact at four-year institutions of residence (resident students and commuter students), the literature review revealed there has been little research on resident students and commuter students on community college campuses (Murrell, 1998).;This study can be characterized as a preliminary investigation into whether resident students' and commuter students' …

Performance Evaluation Of Dryer Units Used In Diesel Emission Measurement Systems, Muhammad Nadeem Laeeq Aug 2005

Performance Evaluation Of Dryer Units Used In Diesel Emission Measurement Systems, Muhammad Nadeem Laeeq

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The gas dryer unit in an emission measurement system plays an important role in emission testing by removing the moisture out of the gas stream and thus reducing the dew point of the sample stream to a level which is required by the gaseous emission analyzers. Water vapor in the exhaust gas occupies considerable volume at high engine loads. In case of non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) and chemiluminescent analyzers, erroneous reporting of exhaust mass emissions could result in the presence of exhaust stream moisture due to interference effects. In addition to NDIR interference issues, an inaccurate determination of the volume displaced …

Floristic Dynamics Of Appalachian Pine-Oak Forests Over A Prescribed Fire Chronosequence, Michael A. Marsh Aug 2005

Floristic Dynamics Of Appalachian Pine-Oak Forests Over A Prescribed Fire Chronosequence, Michael A. Marsh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Vegetation dynamics after prescribed fire were modeled on three mountains in the George Washington National Forest representing a chronosequence of conditions since burning: pre-burn, and 1, 2 and 12 years post-treatment. Vegetation structure was more affected by environmental and spatial (burn intensity) gradients than by time since burning. Significant fire effects occurred on southwest aspects and upper slopes, especially among the sapling and shrub strata. Pine and oak regeneration abundance was not affected by fire but shade tolerant tree seedlings decreased, and shade intolerant seedlings increased in importance as a result. Percent cover and richness of herbaceous species increased, partly …

3d P- And Converted Shear Wave Characteristics Of The Morrow Production Trend In The Buffalo Valley Field, Chaves-Eddy County, New Mexico, Sandeep Pyakurel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Regional and local subsurface log and 3D seismic interpretations were undertaken in the vicinity of the Buffalo Valley field in southeastern New Mexico. Oil production in the field is trapped in early Pennsylvanian basal Morrow Formation Harris Channel. Regional interpretation shows that the field is located on the Northwestern Shelf along the rim of the Delaware basin. Structure and isopach maps reveal that high production is associated with a structural low that actively developed during deposition of the reservoir interval. The Harris Channel scoured into the upper Mississippian Barnett shale. Areas of thin Barnett Shale coincide with production and define …

Applications Of The Covering Property Axiom, Andres Millan Millan Aug 2005

Applications Of The Covering Property Axiom, Andres Millan Millan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this work is two-fold. First, we present some consequences of the Covering Property Axiom CPA of Ciesielski and Pawlikowski which captures the combinatorial core of the Sacks' model of the set theory. Second, we discuss the assumptions in the formulation of different versions of CPA.;As our first application of CPA we prove that under the version CPAgamecube of CPA there are uncountable strong gamma-sets on R . It is known that Martin's Axiom (MA) implies the existence of a strong gamma-set on R . Our result is interesting since that CPAgamecube implies the negation of MA.;Next, we …

Glutathione Conjugation Of A Cocaine Pyrolysis Product Aeme And Related Compounds, Alan Lewis Myers Aug 2005

Glutathione Conjugation Of A Cocaine Pyrolysis Product Aeme And Related Compounds, Alan Lewis Myers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Free-base ("crack") cocaine smoking continues to be a popular method of drug abuse in the United States. Pyrolysis of free-base cocaine readily occurs, forming primarily benzoic acid and anhydroecgonine methyl ester (AEME), which structurally contains an alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl functional group. This electrophilic structure is suggestive of chemical reactivity with ubiquitously occurring cellular nucleophiles, such as glutathione. Glutathione adducts formed in vivo are metabolized to N-acetylcysteine derivatives by the enzymatically driven mercapturic acid pathway. AEME and its transesterification product in the presence of ethanol, anhydroecgonine ethyl ester (AEEE), were synthesized from cocaine hydrochloride. Glutathione (GSH) and mercapturic acid (NAC) conjugates of …

Parameter Incremental Learning Algorithm For Neural Networks, Sheng Wan Aug 2005

Parameter Incremental Learning Algorithm For Neural Networks, Sheng Wan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this dissertation, a novel training algorithm for neural networks, named Parameter Incremental Learning (PIL), is proposed, developed, analyzed and numerically validated.;The main idea of the PIL algorithm is based on the essence of incremental supervised learning: that the learning algorithm, i.e., the update law of the network parameters, should not only adapt to the newly presented input-output training pattern, but also preserve the prior results. A general PIL algorithm for feedforward neural networks is accordingly derived, using the first-order approximation technique, with appropriate measures of the performance of preservation and adaptation. The PIL algorithms for the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this examination is to determine the role of verbal aggression in Presidential debates. Using six types of verbally aggressive messages, coders examined one Presidential debate from nine Presidential elections to determine the amount of verbal aggression used by each candidate. The findings from this examination indicate that there is a pattern for the use of verbal aggression in Presidential debates. Challengers use significantly more verbal aggression than incumbents while five of the nine elections had the winner using less verbally aggressive messages than the loser. Results of this study support the theory that challengers are forced to …

Gossip As An Interpersonal Communication Phenomenon, Elycia M. Taylor Aug 2005

Gossip As An Interpersonal Communication Phenomenon, Elycia M. Taylor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two studies were conducted for the purpose of validating Foster's (2004) Gossip Functions Questionnaire (GFQ) which measures the reasons why people gossip (i.e., the functions of gossip). The GFQ originally consisted of four subscales that measured the functions of gossip: information, entertainment, friendship, and influence. In Study One, an exploratory factor analysis failed to reveal the four subscales Foster originally conceptualized. However, three factors were apparent that seemed to measure three separate functions of gossip: trivial gossip, influential gossip, and behavioral guidance gossip. In Study Two, a confirmatory factor analysis of a second data set failed to validate the 3-factor …

The Upper Pennsylvanian Glenshaw Formation contains a series of marine zones that were deposited on the detrital slope of the Appalachian highlands during the last major transgressions from the Midcontinent Sea in the Paleozoic of eastern North America. These marine zones contain distinctive fossil assemblages characterized as biofacies that inhabited a variety of shallow marine environments.;The first chapter of this paper focuses on the Ames marine zone sampled along a northwest-southeast transect across the Appalachian Basin. The Ames marine zone was deposited during the most extensive marine transgression of the Pennsylvanian in this region. Gradient analysis of the proportional abundance …

Essays On Value Added Tax Evasion And Tax Amnesty Programs, Hari Sharan Luitel Aug 2005

Essays On Value Added Tax Evasion And Tax Amnesty Programs, Hari Sharan Luitel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using a panel data from 1972 to 1999, the first essay of this dissertation analyzes how VAT evasion has changed as reliance on VAT in the sample of 25 OECD countries increased. The VAT ratio and VAT share are used as alternative measures of VAT reliance as independent variables. The results show that an increase in the VAT ratio and VAT share decreases VAT evasion. Overall, the results are quite robust to the various regression specifications.;Proponents argue that tax amnesties raise revenues both in the short run and the long run, by bringing former non-filers back into the tax system. …

Development Of Improved T Cell Receptor Beta Variable Gene Identification Technology And Its Application Post Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, Jamie Leigh Brewer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Much has yet to be understood about the role of specific families of T lymphocytes in the post human hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant environment. Prior work in the field has identified T cells based upon the expression of their T cell receptor beta variable regions (TCRBV). In this investigation we developed a comprehensive panel of oligonucleotides that can be used to determine the expression of all 91 alleles of the human TCRBV regions using real time PCR technology. Application of this technology to peripheral blood samples collected weekly from allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplant patients yielded the following …

Counseling And Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students' Perceptions Of Their Faculty's Ethical Behavior, Philip W. Cromer Aug 2005

Counseling And Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students' Perceptions Of Their Faculty's Ethical Behavior, Philip W. Cromer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of psychology doctoral students with regard to their faculty's ethical behavior. A review of the literature suggested that research on the perception of ethical behavior in academia has been narrowly focused on undergraduate students. Furthermore, many of the studies did not convey a comprehensive picture of the students' perceptions of their faculty's ethical behavior. A survey instrument was adapted from a survey used in a study of students' view of their undergraduate professors' actions (Keith-Spiegel, Tabachnick, & Allen, 1993). A randomized sample of 50 accredited counseling psychology doctoral programs and …

Graduation status and academic quartile ranking were used to measure outcome. Chi-Square and ANOVA procedures were used to test the research hypotheses.

Stationary Phase Induction Of Rpos In Enteric Bacteria, Matthew Louis Hirsch Aug 2005

Stationary Phase Induction Of Rpos In Enteric Bacteria, Matthew Louis Hirsch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In enteric bacteria, stress adaptation is mediated by the RpoS protein, one of several sigma-factors that, in association with RNA polymerase, collectively allow a tailored transcriptional response to environmental cues. Stress stimuli including low temperature, osmotic shock, and starvation all result in a substantial increase in RpoS abundance. Perhaps the most pronounced affect is observed during growth to stationary phase (SP) in rich medium. The mechanism of regulation depends on the specific signal, but may occur at the level of transcription, translation, protein activity or targeted proteolysis. In both Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica cultured in rich undefined medium, the …

Generalization Of An Integrated Cost Model And Extensions To Cots, Ple And Ttm, Lin Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There have been existing software reuse cost models related to estimating costs of software reuse, for example, COCOMO II, COCOTS, and so on. Chmiel's model [Chmiel 2000] is a generalization of these cost models. This model is different from others in that the decisions are composed of four levels and treats reuse projects from a point of view of long term run. Each level corresponds one engineering cycle. Each level is a decision making process based on calculation of NPV, ROI, and other economic indices. Reuse investment decisions are made on different levels from the corporate to the programming.;Chmiel's model …

The First Amendment Rights Of High School Students And Their Student Newspapers, Teresa J. Boggs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The greatest of all human rights are the freedoms of speech and expression included within the First Amendment to the Constitution. These allow all Americans to say what they feel, dress as they want, and print opinions that may not always be popular.;Throughout time journalists of all ages have endured criticism for printing questionable and controversial information. In student newspapers, however, rarely does one find a story of consequence, one that sparks criticism and casts a light of upheaval on the school system that supports it.;Student journalists across America have become victims of limited speech, whether by choice, by the …

The Use Of Heuristics In Identifying Self-Propagating Malicious Mobile Code, Jesse Twardus Aug 2005

The Use Of Heuristics In Identifying Self-Propagating Malicious Mobile Code, Jesse Twardus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Self-propagating malicious mobile code, or worms, has become a major threat to modern computer systems. As these types of viruses thrive in a networked computing environment, they have exploded in popularity in recent years.;Modern defenses have proved inadequate in protecting computer systems from the worm threat. The most often used remedy is a signature-based detection system that scans each incoming network packet for the presence of a signature identifying a specific worm. As a new worm or variant of an existing worm is released, this signature set must be updated to include definitions for the new worm or variant.;In this …
