From Peasant To Pariah: Changing English Perceptions Of The Irish From The 1820s Through The 1860s, Traci J. Scully May 2011

From Peasant To Pariah: Changing English Perceptions Of The Irish From The 1820s Through The 1860s, Traci J. Scully

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While the historiography of English perceptions of the Irish in the later period of the Victorian era is extensive, there is a dearth of research in tracing the origins of these perceptions. The connection between England and Ireland dates back centuries, and the relationship was neutral at best and extremely violent at worst. Historians such as L. Perry Curtis have analyzed the mass media of these later decades to argue that the English saw their neighbors as subhuman creatures in the racial hierarchy.;However, this image did not emerge from a single event, but rather evolved over the tumultuous earlier decades …

In Sickness And In Health, In Good Times And In Bad: A Comparative Analysis Of The Ideologies Governing Health Care Reform In Canada And The United States, 1962--1974, Michael A. Todt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores the ideology of health care reform in Canada and the United States from 1962 to 1974. During that time, Canada enacted Medicare, which provided a universal physician services program designed by the provinces and supported financially by the federal government. Rejecting a private-sector approach and Quebec's desire for complete autonomy in the program design, the joint federal-provincial program supported the Canadian values of government responsibility for health care (paternal statism) and the belief that Canadians have a responsibility to care for each other (collectivism).;From 1970 to 1974, the U.S. Congress failed to enact any national health insurance …

Living With Migraine Headache: A Phenomenological Study Of Women's Experiences, Anthony R. Ramsey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Multiple studies have addressed migraine headache in recent years. There is little research related to women.s experiences of living with migraine headache. Researchers have explored migraine headache from a pathophysiological perspective and medical treatment perspective. Studies exploring what it is like for women to live with migraine headache on a day-to-day life basis have not been produced. This qualitative study explored the lived experience of eight women who had migraine headache. Participant stories were gathered and analyzed using the middle range story theory and the phenomenological approach described by van Manen. A structure of meaning of living with migraine headaches …

Administrative Obstacles To Technology Use In West Virginia Public Schools: A Survey Of West Virginia Principals, David W. Agnew

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Public school principals must meet many challenges and make decisions concerning financial obligations while providing the best learning environment for students. A major challenge to principals is implementing technological components successfully while providing teachers the 21st century instructional skills needed to enhance students' utilization of technology. For this study, technology consisted of areas related to infrastructure (facilities, hardware, software, funding), social issues (staffing, staff development, principals' motivation, teacher and student perceptions), and policy affecting how principals implement technology in elementary, middle, and high school environments. These areas of technology are greatly impacted through the administrative decision making process. School systems …

Franz Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924), was an enterprising and successful pianist, composer, and teacher in nineteenth century Germany who in 1893 composed an opera, Mataswintha, based on the novel Ein Kampf um Rom by the celebrated German author Felix Dahn. This work, in the style of Richard Wagner, was most earnestly marketed by its publisher Breitkopf und Hartel, yet received only the following four complete performances in its lifetime: an orchestral concert performance and a staged performance in Weimar, Germany and an orchestral concert performance and a staged performance in New York City on April 1, 1897 at the Metropolitan Opera …

An Analysis Of Strategic Interaction Between Government Jurisdictions, George R. Crowley May 2011

An Analysis Of Strategic Interaction Between Government Jurisdictions, George R. Crowley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation consists of three essays, each examining a type of strategic interaction between government jurisdictions. Specifically, I explore the effect of distributive politics in the legislature on intergovernmental competition, how fiscal decentralization serves as a constraint on Leviathan government, and how state constitutions are designed in response to neighboring institutions. In essay one, I combine the Brennan and Buchanan (1977, 1978, 1980) 'Leviathan' model with the seminal Weingast, Shepsle, and Johnsen (1981) 'Law of 1/n' to show that the effect of increased decentralization on government size is limited by associated increases in legislature size. Essay two employs two distinct …

Examining Sexual Assault Risk Factors In Female College Athletes, Eric Limegrover May 2011

Examining Sexual Assault Risk Factors In Female College Athletes, Eric Limegrover

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sexual assault has been a widely studied occurrence in the United States and continues to be a major problem on college campuses. Recent surveys of college women have found that between 15% and 20% have experienced rape (Flack et al., 2007; McMahon, 2007). Unfortunately, little empirical research has examined specific college populations that maybe at a greater risk of sexual assault. Female college athletes comprise a special population that has been linked to many of the risk factors that are associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing sexual assault. This study examined risk factors associated with sexual assault such as …

Ezra Ayers Carman: The Gatekeeper Of Memory At Antietam National Battlefield, Richard A. Hulver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ezra Ayers Carman was a veteran of Antietam who was employed by the War Department in the last decade of the nineteenth century to write the official history of that battle. As an historian, Carman acted as a gatekeeper of the official memory at Antietam. He created scaffolding in which veterans could remember tactical/military aspects of their participation in the battle of Antietam. Once his framework for memory was set, Carman opened up extensive correspondence with veterans. He then had the responsibility of sifting through the incoming memories and choosing those he would use to create his official history. The …

The Sacred In The Profane: Understanding Andy Warhol's Relationship With The Visual Image, Linda Rosefsky May 2011

The Sacred In The Profane: Understanding Andy Warhol's Relationship With The Visual Image, Linda Rosefsky

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For Andy Warhol (1928-1987), images meant for commercial advertisement, tabloid publication, and entertainment were not merely meaningless reflections of a commodity and media-obsessed world -- they were sacred. In 1986, the Pop artist based the last major series of his career on a reproduction of a Renaissance masterpiece, Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper (1495-97/98, figure 1). Given the slick packaging of Warhol's oeuvre and his cool public persona, it would be easy to dismiss these late paintings as a cynical comment on the proliferation of images in American society. Viewing The Last Supper series from the perspectives of biography, psychology, …

Con[Text], Virginia D. Millard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My work explores the relationship of text and image to the creation and perception of our roles in the world, principally from a feminist point of view. I examine the influence of symbols and labels, both imposed and carefully chosen, on the identity women present to the world and ourselves. Through photography and design, I reflect on the roles I fill in my own life as an artist, wife, mother, and daughter and the symbols and words associated with such roles in the hope of revealing a larger truth about communication and relationships through words and images.

Art Educators And Practicing Artists: Strengthening The Curriculum And Building A Creative Community, John Christopher Williams May 2011

Art Educators And Practicing Artists: Strengthening The Curriculum And Building A Creative Community, John Christopher Williams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An artist residency consists of a visiting artist (dance, musical, theatrical, or visual) creating work in and teaching their craft to an audience of participants. Artist residencies take place in a variety of settings, in public and private schools, after-school programs, in day care and preschool programs, community centers, and adult recreational and care facilities. Over time in a school setting artist residencies have evolved to include school curriculum, input and collaboration from the host teacher. I believe artist residences could become a catalyst for school curriculum change to focus on the arts. Arts integrated residencies and curriculum can impact …

Rethinking Modes Of Political Influence: Catherine De' Medici And Her Female Political Network, Kelly A. Benner May 2011

Rethinking Modes Of Political Influence: Catherine De' Medici And Her Female Political Network, Kelly A. Benner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Though previous studies on the political career of Catherine de' Medici have been male-centric, focusing primarily on Catherine's relationships with her sons and male noblemen, it is the contention of this thesis that Catherine amassed a female-based political network during her tenure as Queen mother. Comprised of both her female relatives and the noblewomen that surrounded her at court, Catherine used this system of females to manipulate both domestic and foreign politics. The first chapter of this thesis will focus on Catherine's political purpose for her eldest and youngest daughters, Elisabeth de Valois (consort of Philip II of Spain) and …

The Politics Of Self-Provisioning In North-Central West Virginia, Autumn Long May 2011

The Politics Of Self-Provisioning In North-Central West Virginia, Autumn Long

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Provisioning one's own food appears to be the next step in the politicization of food production and consumption choices. In contrast to more convenient forms of "ethical consumption" such as buying organic or local, household-level food production requires a great deal of labor-time, knowledge, and social support. But does food self-provisioning elicit or engender a particular political consciousness? Based on six months of fieldwork conducted during the spring and summer of 2010, this research employs qualitative methodologies, including surveys, semistructured interviews, and ethnography, to examine the political, economic, and cultural dynamics of household-level food provisioning amongst a sample of food …

Runes: Past And Present, Elliott S. Evans May 2011

Runes: Past And Present, Elliott S. Evans

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to illustrate how the primary function of runes has changed through history. In doing so this study also begins to document the reemergence of runes especially in Asatru circles. Runes were historically employed for utilitarian purposes whereas they have been imbued with magical qualities in the eyes of their modern users. By using a modified version of the speech act theory, the notion of "magic" is linguistically operationalized and used to demonstrate the stark contrast between the primary purpose of historical runic texts and modern ones.

Implementation Of A Helicopter Flight Simulator With Individual Blade Control, Andrew G. Zinchiak May 2011

Implementation Of A Helicopter Flight Simulator With Individual Blade Control, Andrew G. Zinchiak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nearly all modern helicopters are designed with a swashplate-based system for control of the main rotor blades. However, the swashplate-based approach does not provide the level of redundancy necessary to cope with abnormal actuator conditions. For example, if an actuator fails (becomes locked) on the main rotor, the cyclic inputs are consequently fixed and the helicopter may become stuck in a flight maneuver. This can obviously be seen as a catastrophic failure, and would likely lead to a crash.;These types of failures can be overcome with the application of individual blade control (IBC). IBC is achieved using the blade pitch …

Prediction Of The Effects Of Compositional Mixing In A Reservoir On Conversion To Natural Gas Storage, Alan Wallace Brannon May 2011

Prediction Of The Effects Of Compositional Mixing In A Reservoir On Conversion To Natural Gas Storage, Alan Wallace Brannon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most existing gas storage fields have been developed from depleted natural gas and oil production reservoirs. It is not uncommon for gas storage fields to be developed in water bearing aquifer zones where the presence of conventional type reservoirs is limited. Natural Gas Condensate reservoirs are typically not found in the eastern United States where most gas storage facilities are developed close to the colder market and increased population centers. Therefore, data is limited on how the lean dry storage gas will interact with the remaining residual gas condensate liquid and wet gas at reservoir pressure and temperature conditions.;Data concerning …
