Aircraft Parameter Identification For Application Within A Fault-Tolerant Flight Control System, Kerri B. Phillips

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A parameter identification study was conducted to identify a detailed aircraft mathematical model for application within a fault-tolerant flight control system that aims to detect, identify, and accommodate for sensor and actuator failures. Specifically, a mathematical model was identified under nominal conditions for two aircraft platforms, and a model was developed for one platform under actuator failure conditions. These models are to be used in flight control law design and to account for actuator failures on the primary control surfaces for one of the research platforms. In order to accurately model the aircraft behavior following a control surface failure, the …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of The Creating Opportunity For Personal Empowerment (Cope) Healthy Lifestyles Thinking, Emotions, Exercise, And Nutrition (Teen) Program In A Rural High School Health Class, Teresa Ritchie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background. More than 12.5 million children in the United States are overweight. More specifically, in 2007, 31% of 9th grade students in West Virginia were overweight. Healthy People 2010 identified obesity as among the top ten health issues and set a goal to reduce the proportion of children and adolescents who were overweight to 5%. This goal was not attained because most current interventions to prevent and treat obesity have not been effective in changing the weight status of children and adolescents. However, cognitive behavioral interventions, combined with parent education have been found to be an effective strategy in weight …

Optimization Of Operating Parameters For Minimum Mechanical Specific Energy In Drilling, Todd Robert Hamrick May 2011

Optimization Of Operating Parameters For Minimum Mechanical Specific Energy In Drilling, Todd Robert Hamrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Efficiency in drilling is measured by Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE). MSE is the measure of the amount of energy input required to remove a unit volume of rock, expressed in units of energy input divided by volume removed. It can be expressed mathematically in terms of controllable parameters; Weight on Bit, Torque, Rate of Penetration, and RPM. It is well documented that minimizing MSE by optimizing controllable factors results in maximum Rate of Penetration. Current methods for computing MSE make it possible to minimize MSE in the field only through a trial-and-error process. This work makes it possible to compute …

Transport Processes In Low Turbulence Flows Associated With Enclosing Hoods, Ertan Karaismail May 2011

Transport Processes In Low Turbulence Flows Associated With Enclosing Hoods, Ertan Karaismail

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Effective exhaust hoods are critical for protection of workers from airborne contaminants. The present study investigates the flow dynamics and associated contaminant dispersion in the near-wake of a worker working at a bench- top enclosing hood. The focus is primarily placed on evaluating the effects of different factors such as cross-draft, body heat and body shape on the dynamics of the wake flow and eventually on the exposure level. For this purpose, extensive two- and three-dimensional Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations are carried out using the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, called FLUENT, with various turbulence models, such as …

Influence Of Selenium On Bluegill (Lepomis Macrochirus ) In Upper Mud River Watershed, Alison M. Anderson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Selenium based criteria for aquatic ecosystems have been based on water quality measurements, but recently there has been basis to evaluate other aspects, such as whole body, dietary, and sediment levels. Mud River Reservoir, located in Lincoln County West Virginia, receives selenium input from mountain top/valley fill mining activities. The average selenium water levels for the reservoir are above the US EPA water quality standard of 5 microg/L and considered a high hazard for fish dietary consumption based on macroinvertebrate collections. The bluegill population is also a high hazard for selenium influenced reproductive impairment based on bluegill whole body and …

Ozone Induces Nerve Growth Factor Release From Rat Tracheal Epithelial Cells During An Early Postnatal Critical Period, Lynnsey A. Carrell-Jacks May 2011

Ozone Induces Nerve Growth Factor Release From Rat Tracheal Epithelial Cells During An Early Postnatal Critical Period, Lynnsey A. Carrell-Jacks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ozone, one of the major air pollutants in urban areas, produces epithelial cell injury and inflammation in the airways upon exposure. Previous studies have shown that ozone exposure leads to increased substance P (SP) expression in nerves innervating the smooth muscle in the extrapulmonary airway. Nerve growth factor (NGF), a neurotrophin, is known to increase SP expression. To determine the effect of ozone exposure on the release of NGF, a cell culture technique was developed for studying a homogenous rat tracheal epithelial cell population for analysis of NGF mRNA and protein expression. Furthermore, to determine if this effect is age-dependent, …

Outage Probability In Multimodal Networks, Ricky E. Hussmann May 2011

Outage Probability In Multimodal Networks, Ricky E. Hussmann

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the mid 1990's wireless researchers discovered that additional antennas located at the transmitter, receiver or both could help combat the unpredictable nature of the wireless channel. This field of research, known as MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output), became very active and has been thoroughly studied. Manufacturers have sought to incorporate these performance gains into their devices by including multiple transmit and receive antennas. However, as wireless devices such as mobile phones become smaller it becomes impractical to design a handset with multiple antennas.;Cooperative diversity is a technique that may be employed when device sizes are too small to incorporate a local …

Effect Of Service Sire On Late Embryonic And Fetal Loss In Sheep, Tammy L. Holler May 2011

Effect Of Service Sire On Late Embryonic And Fetal Loss In Sheep, Tammy L. Holler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Very few authors have studied the effect of the sire on the outcome of pregnancy in sheep beyond differentiation, development, spermatogenesis, fertilization and early embryo survival. A major limitation in direct selection for increased sire competence is that males need to be selected mainly on the performance of their female relatives and females do not express lambing traits until at least one or two years of age. This selection process can be accelerated by studying prenatal survival ability of individual ram's progeny.;The objective of the present study was to identify occurrence of late embryonic and fetal mortality in relation to …

Self-Reported Posttraumatic Stress And Borderline Personality Behaviors In Relation To Reports Of Traumatic Events, Attachment, Parental Behavior, And Social Support, Vanessa M. Jacoby

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are conceptualized as different constructs in the DSM-IV, but research increasingly reveals an association among the symptoms of these disorders. Two relational models were examined: a Shared Risk Factor Model and a Continuum Model. In a sample of 603 college students, principle axis factoring of the Borderline Symptom List and PTSD Checklist showed minimal overlap in symptom presentation, partially supporting a Shared Risk Factor Model. Further support was established as regression analyses showed shared risk factors for reporting a greater number of BPD and PTSD behaviors, including experiencing at least one …

Effects Of Fixed-Time Reinforcement Schedules On Resurgence Of Positively Reinforced Problem Behavior, Tonya M. Marsteller May 2011

Effects Of Fixed-Time Reinforcement Schedules On Resurgence Of Positively Reinforced Problem Behavior, Tonya M. Marsteller

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Resurgence of problem behavior following the discontinuation of DRA interventions may be prevented by response-independent reinforcer delivery. In basic research, response-independent reinforcer delivery following DRA prevented resurgence of the initially reinforced response and maintained alternative responding. The present study evaluated if these results were generalizable humans by assessing if fixed-time (FT) reinforcer delivery following DRA would prevent resurgence of problem behavior and maintain appropriate behavior with 4 children with disabilities. For all participants, EXT following DRA produced resurgence of previously reinforced problem behavior and reduced appropriate requesting, but FT reinforcer delivery following DRA did not produce resurgence of problem behavior …

Pain And Suicide In A Population-Based Sample, Sarra Nazem May 2011

Pain And Suicide In A Population-Based Sample, Sarra Nazem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous research suggests that individuals who experience chronic pain are at increased risk for suicidal behaviors. No studies, however, have specifically examined the association between headaches and fatal suicide behavior. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether gender moderates the relation between pain and suicide, and whether the relation is independent of the effects of depression. The present study aimed to characterize the relation between pain (headache, back, shoulder, and neck) and suicide. Data were obtained from two sources in the Swedish Twin Registry. A total of 42,928 individuals responded to headache questions in either 1967 or 1973 for the first data …

Lineaments mapped using digital elevation model hillshades and 1:24,000 topographic maps were classified by region (north, central, and south), orientation, length, density, location, and distance from nearest springs and streams. Lineaments exhibit bimodal orientation perpendicular (mean = 113.1° to 122.2°) and parallel (mean = 14.7° to 32.3°) to strike and are strongly correlated with springs and stream locations; every stream was located along a lineament. Lineament density is higher in the northern part …

Controlled Substance, Ron Hollingshead May 2011

Controlled Substance, Ron Hollingshead

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My MFA thesis and supporting exhibition will highlight sculptural work I have created that deals directly or indirectly with circumstances surrounding personal health problems. A recent L4-5 micro-discectomy and the following complications have given much inspiration for my art making. I use this personal narrative as a jumping-off point to create object-based artwork that brings up larger, more universal themes, such as body, disability, pain, and pharmaceutical use. I will explain how the creation of artwork about the process of healing brought with it its own catharsis.

Reboot, Nick Lejeune May 2011

Reboot, Nick Lejeune

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I am an artist that works with technologically obsolete materials in order to elevate them to have purely aesthetic, sublime qualities. Creating my art this way has led me to profile and understand hoarders; those who collect materials that are otherwise socially useless. They collect these objects to the point where the collection act becomes an obsessive psychological disorder. This thesis will prove that while I identify with those who struggle with this disorder, my own collection tendencies lend themselves to being more related to the processes of contemporary artists and their need to reconfigure the original use of objects …

Simulation Factor Screen In Binary Response Models, Minqi Li May 2011

Simulation Factor Screen In Binary Response Models, Minqi Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To eliminate unimportant factors so that the remaining important factors can be further studied in later experimentation, screening experiments (which may be physical or simulation based) are typically performed. This thesis proposes a hybrid statistical procedure for efficient factor screening via simulation experiments. The hybrid procedure is particularly developed for cases where the system response is binary, as opposed to continuous; such a factor-screening procedure does not exist yet in the literature.;The proposed hybrid procedure integrates two screening methods: the sequential factorial design with multivariate sequential test (SFD-MT), which is newly developed in this work, and the modified controlled sequential …

The Influence Of Interface Friction And W/H Ratio On The Violence Of Coal Specimen Failure, Simon H. Prassetyo May 2011

The Influence Of Interface Friction And W/H Ratio On The Violence Of Coal Specimen Failure, Simon H. Prassetyo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Violent failures of coal pillars, known in practice as coal mine bumps, have long been a subject of investigation. Many field investigations have considered geological conditions that create high stress in the pillar as the main causative factor leading to bumps. In recent years, stress and constraint have been shown to be necessary in producing coal burst.;This research investigated the influence of interface friction and w/h ratio on the violence of coal specimen failure. In satisfying this objective, three violent failure parameters such as peak SPL, core zone failure, and ultimate stress were used to assess the violence of failure. …

The American School Of Oboe Playing: Robert Bloom, John De Lancie, John Mack, And The Influence Of Marcel Tabuteau, Amy M. Galbraith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The American school of oboe playing is a distinct national style that evolved during the twentieth century. It is characterized by a darker tone than other national schools and a phrasing style that emphasizes long, connected lines with nuances in tonal intensity. The style was developed by Marcel Tabuteau, and is distinguished by his modified "long scrape" reed as well as the numerical system he used to teach musical phrasing. Even today, his ideas continue to disseminate, and most American oboists can trace their pedagogical roots back to Tabuteau. Yet despite the school's evolution from one person, diversity exists. This …

Rate Of Response-Independent Events As Discriminative Stimuli, Andres Garcia Penagos May 2011

Rate Of Response-Independent Events As Discriminative Stimuli, Andres Garcia Penagos

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study of stimulus rates is relevant to understanding how discrete events integrated in time come to function as a single molar unit that can be discriminated from other comparable units. Two experiments examined the roles of stimulus rates as discriminative stimuli in a conditional discrimination paradigm. Pigeons responding according to a fixed interval (FI) schedule of reinforcement were presented concurrently with pairs of stimulus rates (response-independent blackouts of the operant boxes), so that access to food was granted if the pigeons pecked a comparison key associated to each stimulus rate. One-blackout versus two-blackouts stimulus rates were used on the …
