Experimental Emissions And Fuel Economy Analysis Of A Diesel Engine Operating On Vegetable Oil, Robert F. Minehart Iii
Experimental Emissions And Fuel Economy Analysis Of A Diesel Engine Operating On Vegetable Oil, Robert F. Minehart Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Plant based oils or vegetable oils (VO) may be an alternate fuel to diesel for heavy duty diesel applications. The object of this study was to compare the emissions and fuel economy of a diesel engine operated on both diesel fuel and VO. This was achieved by experimentally comparing the soot and gaseous exhaust emissions from a diesel engine that was operated on both VO and diesel fuel. A 1.9L GM/Vauxhall diesel engine was mounted on an Eaton 225 HP AC Engine Dynamometer. The engine's soot production output was measured using an AVL 483 Micro Soot Sensor and the gaseous …
Habitat Use By Northern Dusky Salamanders In Riparian Corridors Of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Robert Joseph Michalow
Habitat Use By Northern Dusky Salamanders In Riparian Corridors Of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Robert Joseph Michalow
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Amphibian populations have decreased in many parts of the world and the rate of decline has increased over the past 25 years. Much of the population decline can be attributed to habitat fragmentation, thus, possibly forming metapopulations. The semi-aquatic northern dusky salamander belongs to the family Plethodontidae and the genus Desmognathus. Amphibians, such as salamanders, may occupy undisturbed forest floors with biomass equal to, or exceeding, the biomass of other vertebrate groups and they can achieve their highest densities in ancient or undisturbed forests. Salamander densities can be estimated using cover items and this method has become a more common …

Vcast: A Distance-Sensitive Scalable Information Dissemination Protocol, Raja Abhinay Moparthi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The future of intelligent transportation systems lies in dealing with safety and navigation of vehicles. Building a technology that provides the real-time information about the state of other vehicles like its location, speed and direction would help in developing a system that ensures safety along with navigation. However, the network limitations pose difficulty in obtaining the state information over multiple-hops, because of the bandwidth limitations and congestion in the shared wireless channel. Overcoming this challenge would yield an intelligent transportation system which gives information regarding the collisions, lane changes and merges, emergency vehicle approaching alerts, stopped vehicle alerts, etc., over …
Potential Inhibitors And Sources Of Error In The Measurement Of Travertine Precipitation Rates In A Karst Stream Influenced By Thermal Mineral Waters, Johnathan E. Moore
Potential Inhibitors And Sources Of Error In The Measurement Of Travertine Precipitation Rates In A Karst Stream Influenced By Thermal Mineral Waters, Johnathan E. Moore
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Precipitation rates for travertine have been studied in many natural settings and compared to theoretical calcite (CaCO3) precipitation rates; in most studies, the emphasis is placed on the degassing of CO 2 as the primary controlling mechanism. Little research has been done in natural settings to evaluate precipitate composition, rates of precipitation, and the role of potential inhibitors of calcite growth. This study addresses these questions in a Sweet Springs Creek, West Virginia-Virginia: a karst stream fed partly by thermal mineral waters with high CO2. For this study, travertine plates were deployed to measure the accretion of precipitates in the …
Pharmacological Characterization Of Sigma-2 Preferring Compounds: Implications In Cocaine-Induced Behaviors, Bahar Noorbakhsh
Pharmacological Characterization Of Sigma-2 Preferring Compounds: Implications In Cocaine-Induced Behaviors, Bahar Noorbakhsh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cocaine is a powerful psychostimulant that is highly abused by 1.9 million people in the United States. It accounts for more emergency department visits than any other illicit drug. Even with the high rate of cocaine abuse, no FDA approved pharmacological treatments exist. Many attempts at finding a pharmacotherapy for cocaine abuse and addiction have been made, but proven unsuccessful. Cocaine is known to bind sigma receptors at physiologically relevant concentrations, deeming them potential targets for cocaine pharmacotherapies and helping to elucidate the actions of cocaine. Two subtypes of sigma receptors have been described, sigma-1 and sigma-2. Minimal information is …
Chirality Sorted Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes For Random Network Thin Film Applications, Volkan Ozyar
Chirality Sorted Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes For Random Network Thin Film Applications, Volkan Ozyar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are comprised entirely of carbon atoms which lie in a graphitic plane rolled into a seamless cylinder. The direction in which the graphic plane is rolled affects the subsequent chiralities of the SWNTs. This direction is called the chiral vector. This chiral vector, Ch =na1+ma2, is described in terms of a pair of integers (n,m) and a pair of lattice vectors (a1,a2) associated with each carbon atom in the graphene sheet. The magnitude of the chiral vector determines the diameter of the nanotubes as d= Ch/pi. SWNTs with integers n-m =3i, where i = 0, 1, …

Three Essays On Political Economy And Development, Adam Pellillo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is a collection of three essays that examine how political economy and institutional factors influence development outcomes. In Chapter 1, I introduce each essay and argue that it is important to incorporate political economy and institutional considerations into studies in development economics. Chapter 2 examines the political economy of development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by assessing the impact of conflict and local insecurity on household-level economic conditions across the country. Chapter 3 analyzes the political economy of infant mortality rates across the developing world by using an usually large microlevel dataset for 70 developing countries. …
In Search Of A Dream America: Place-Connectedness In East European Immigrant Life Writing, Irina V. Rodimtseva
In Search Of A Dream America: Place-Connectedness In East European Immigrant Life Writing, Irina V. Rodimtseva
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Theorists of place acknowledge human need for attachment to place, but this bond is often stated as a given, without an explication of its origin or attributes. Implementing the concept of place-connectedness formulated by Lawrence Buell, I analyze the process of bonding with new places described in immigrant life writing, focusing on twentieth-century texts by authors from Russia, the Soviet Union, and Communist bloc countries. Examining the sources through which American imagery was available to East Europeans during the 1900s, I confirm a link between the concepts of the American Dream and of place-connectedness and contend that for immigrants, establishing …
Development Of A New Human Identity Testing Kit For The Simultaneous Amplification Of The 13 Codis Str Loci Plus Amelogenin Using Locus Specific Brackets (Lsbs), Lizmery Suarez Ferguson
Development Of A New Human Identity Testing Kit For The Simultaneous Amplification Of The 13 Codis Str Loci Plus Amelogenin Using Locus Specific Brackets (Lsbs), Lizmery Suarez Ferguson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
STR loci consist of short, repetitive sequence elements 2--7 base pairs in length. An STR genotype is typically determined by PCR amplification followed by fragment size estimation with electrophoresis. Commercial multiplex STR amplification kits are available for the 13 CORE loci used in the USA for human identity testing. The genotyping rationale with these multiplex STR amplification kits involves a two-fold calibration analysis: 1) An internal size standard (ISS) labeled with a separate dye establishes the size of the unknown DNA fragment and 2) an allelic ladder which contains most of the common alleles for each locus is also sized …
Living Pictures: Performances Of Jewishness In Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century American Novels, Nevena Stojanovic
Living Pictures: Performances Of Jewishness In Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century American Novels, Nevena Stojanovic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My dissertation examines the relationship between Jewish identity and performance in non- Jewish novelists' portrayals of tableaux vivants, or living pictures. As a performance genre imported from Europe, the tableau vivant was a frequent element of nineteenth-century American fiction and a popular pastime of middle- and upper-class Americans in the 1800s. Since living pictures were ideologically coded---in general, designed to motivate viewers, mostly women, to adopt the patriarchal values invoked through the performance, such as chastity, purity, and piety---scholarship on the application of tableaux vivants primarily focuses on gender and class. My dissertation contributes to these discussions by highlighting the …
Tracing Water And Carbon Sources In Complex Geochemical Settings Of The Appalachians: An Isotopic Perspective, Andrea L. Sack
Tracing Water And Carbon Sources In Complex Geochemical Settings Of The Appalachians: An Isotopic Perspective, Andrea L. Sack
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Understanding sources of water and carbon are important for tracking recharge sources as well as assessing any changes in water quality associated with shale gas drilling and/or coal mining in the Appalachians. Natural stable isotopes have become an increasingly important tool for determining sources and cycling of water, carbon, nutrients and other trace elements. This is plausible because variations in water-rock interactions, recharge sources, recharge pathways, and residence time can impart unique isotopic fingerprints to different water sources.;The main objective of this study was to use stable isotopes of water (delta18OH2O and delta2H H2O), DIC (delta13CDIC) and SO4 (delta34SSO4 and …
Black Male Retention Initiatives: Exploring Students' Experiences And Program Effectiveness At Predominantly White Institutions, Gabrielle St. Leger
Black Male Retention Initiatives: Exploring Students' Experiences And Program Effectiveness At Predominantly White Institutions, Gabrielle St. Leger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent initiatives in higher education have been designed to increase Black undergraduate male collegiate retention and persistence through graduation for this historically underrepresented population. Although institutional leaders in higher education have focused on creating more inclusive campuses, designing and implementing programs to retain Black undergraduate men have remained largely under studied. Specifically at predominantly white institutions (PWIs), a step in the process is evaluating and assessing the efforts for effectiveness and impact on students' overall development and success. Programs that have achieved ways to increase the retention rates have information that is useful in reversing low retention and graduation should …
Macroeconomic Recovery After A Currency Crisis, Sheida Teimouri
Macroeconomic Recovery After A Currency Crisis, Sheida Teimouri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the dynamics adjustment of output, output components, labor market variables and output growth after currency crises. In the first essay, I examine the dynamic response of output and its components to large devaluations in 159 countries over the 1970-2005 period. Recent empirical literature on measuring the effects of currency crises shows permanent drops in output following these events. However, theoretical models of contractionary devaluations predict only temporary drops in output due to nominal wage rigidities. I examine whether one can reconcile early theoretical predictions of full long-run recovery of output with the data after isolating the twin …

Evaluation Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy And A Standard Parenting Program Within A Women's State Prison Facility, Ashley B. Tempel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A majority of inmates in state and federal prisons across the U.S. have been reported to be parents of minors (Glaze & Maruschak, 2008). It is estimated that twice as many American children (i.e., 2% or over 1.7 million) compared to children of other industrialized countries have incarcerated parents (Murray, 2007). Approximately 336, 000 households with minor children are believed to be directly affected by parental imprisonment (Mumola, 2000). Parent training provided through correctional programming has potential to impact a large number of American families that are affected by parental incarceration. However, correctional parenting programs often vary across facilities and …
Electronic Structure Of Delafossites For Improved Photocatalysis, M. Kylee Underwood
Electronic Structure Of Delafossites For Improved Photocatalysis, M. Kylee Underwood
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the most pressing issues for scientists today is the ever increasing amount of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is considered the most prominent greenhouse gas, and emissions from fossil fuel power generation alone represent 26% of global CO2 emissions. Here we computationally examine the properties of a family of materials called delafossites for the photoreduction of CO2 emissions produced through fossil fuel power generation. These materials show promise to reduce CO2 into usable products such as methane through photoelectrochemical reduction. Delafossites are of interest due to the discrepancy between their fundamental and optically measured band gaps. …

Forest Regeneration: Perceptions Of Natural Resource Professionals In West Virginia, Ellen Lee Voss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It has generally been assumed that natural hardwood regeneration in West Virginia after a timber harvest or other disturbance will be abundant and successful. However, changes that are being observed in the seedling and sapling components of forest stands suggest that problems may exist with regeneration of desirable species. Factors affecting regeneration have been the topic of conversation among foresters and other natural resource professionals for years. To address the need for more information about this issue, we conducted a mail survey of natural resource professionals (NRPs) in West Virginia. The objectives of the survey were to determine how they …
Identifying Ancestral Origin Using A Novel Panel Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Locations, Zachary D. Williams
Identifying Ancestral Origin Using A Novel Panel Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Locations, Zachary D. Williams
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A novel panel of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) used in the classification of ancestral origin is proposed. The panel is motivated by recent results in human identification and categorization using soft biometrics. The panel makes use of SNPs related to the height and ear size of an individual. The classifier proposed in this thesis is a standard maximum-likelihood classifier that matches an individual to the ancestral profile closest to the individual. This method produces results with lower error rates than other proposed methods.;This thesis proposes a new distinct panel of 55 single nucleotide polymorphisms for determining ancestral origin. This panel …

Early Postpartum Awakenings, Neurocognitive Performance, And Feeding Methods, Michael A. Winser
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated memory for brief nocturnal awakenings, characteristics of those awakenings in women during the early and late postpartum period, and how these awakenings were related to neurocognitive performance in exclusively breastfeeding and exclusively formula-feeding mothers.;The median duration of a nocturnal awakening necessary for morning recall was four minutes and 30 seconds, which closely resembles the current five-minute rule of thumb. There was normal variability in thresholds, indicating that other factors may influence memory for awakenings. During the postpartum period, women generally under-reported the number of awakenings experienced each night, but did increase in accuracy by week 12. Average …
