Effect Of Engineered Metal-Oxide Nanomaterials On Bacterial Viability, Lina Cui

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The occurrence of emerging or newly identified contaminants in our water resources is of rising concern for human health and the environment. Nanomaterials rise to be among the major emerging contaminants in recent years because of their broad applications. The existing conventional water and wastewater treatment plants are not designed for removal of these contaminants. To date, little is known about the fate and impacts of these contaminants in the water systems.;Engineered nanomaterials such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) are known to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under irradiation of ultraviolet or visible light. A sub-lethal level of ROS could trigger …

Physiological And Endocrine Factors Contributing To Acyclicity In The Captive Female African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana), Tina Lynn Dow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently, the captive African elephant population in North America is not self-sustaining. An increase in acyclicity has been documented among post-pubertal females of all ages. Due to ethical issues and cost, importation of new animals is not feasible at this time; therefore, it is imperative that all post-pubertal females within zoological facilities be reproductively viable. The main objectives of these projects were to assess the reproductive status of the captive population and to identify contributing factors to acyclicity. In addition, prevention and treatment protocols were to be designed to promote reproductive proficiency in all reproductive-age females to avert the population …

Multispectral Scleral Patterns For Ocular Biometric Recognition, Simona G. Crihalmeanu Jan 2012

Multispectral Scleral Patterns For Ocular Biometric Recognition, Simona G. Crihalmeanu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biometrics is the science of recognizing people based on their physical or behavioral traits such as face, fingerprints, iris, and voice. Among the various traits studied in the literature, ocular biometrics has gained popularity due to the significant progress made in iris recognition. However, iris recognition is unfavorably influenced by the non-frontal gaze direction of the eye with respect to the acquisition device. In such scenarios, additional parts of the eye, such as the sclera (the white of the eye) may be of significance. In this dissertation, we investigate the use of the sclera texture and the vasculature patterns evident …

Iris Indexing And Ear Classification, Ravindra B. Gadde Jan 2012

Iris Indexing And Ear Classification, Ravindra B. Gadde

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To identify an individual using a biometric system, the input biometric data has to be typically compared against that of each and every identity in the existing database during the matching stage. The response time of the system increases with the increase in number of individuals (i.e., database size), which is not acceptable in real time monitoring or when working on large scale data. This thesis addresses the problem of reducing the number of database candidates to be considered during matching in the context of iris and ear recognition. In the case of iris, an indexing mechanism based on Burrows …

Production And Evaluation Of Novel Exogenous Phytase Enzymes Using Several Testing Variables, Ashley Marie Evans Jan 2012

Production And Evaluation Of Novel Exogenous Phytase Enzymes Using Several Testing Variables, Ashley Marie Evans

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Broiler chickens reared in the United States are mainly fed corn-soybean based diets. Most of the phosphorus in these diets is bound to a molecule called phytate; this source of phosphorus is unavailable to the bird because they lack adequate amount of endogenous phytase enzyme. Since the 1990's exogenous phytase enzymes have been incorporated in broiler diets to liberate the phytate-bound phosphorus. These enzymes must be able to resist thermal denaturation associated with pelleting and maintain high efficacy in the bird. Most of the literature focuses on single aspects of phytase efficacy. More specifically, experiments evaluate phytase based on either …

Professionalization Of Personal Trainers In The Fitness Industry, Lara M. Foster Jan 2012

Professionalization Of Personal Trainers In The Fitness Industry, Lara M. Foster

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The fitness industry is a multi-million dollar business engaged with enhancing or changing the personal appearance of an individual; that is, what Goffman (1963) called with regard to the embodied self, occupations engaged in identity tinkering trades. The muscle and fitness industry's occupations are engaged in tinkering with ones physical identities (Tan & Brignole, 2012). Personal trainers have been acknowledged in social science literature as "customer service" representatives and "emotional laborers" in the fitness industry (Maguire, 2001). This research is a two-part qualitative study: first, I examine the actions, purpose, and roles of the personal fitness trainer and secondly, I …

Adolescent Autonomy Development And Problematic Eating Patterns, Kaitlyn A. Ferris Jan 2012

Adolescent Autonomy Development And Problematic Eating Patterns, Kaitlyn A. Ferris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adolescence is a developmental time period associated with increased autonomy from parents and more independent decision-making. Adolescents strive to control areas of their life once solely controlled by parents, and food and eating decisions are two areas over which adolescents may want to have sole control. In addition, there may be heterogeneity in adolescents' beliefs about food-related behavior as well as adolescents' actual eating patterns. The current study examined parents' and adolescents' domain beliefs about food and whether adolescents' domain beliefs about such behaviors were associated with problematic eating patterns. Participants included 102 female caregiver-adolescent dyads with children between the …

Investigation Of Coal Syngas Impurity Tolerance Of Alternative Cermet Sofc Anodes, Phil Gansor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC's) have the potential for producing highly efficient energy through conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy at high temperatures (>600°C). Until recently, pure hydrogen fuel (H2) is the prime fuel used within these devices. However, the high processing costs associated with clean hydrogen production combined with the abundance of available fossil fuels within the United States has opened the door for research on alternative fuels to power these cells. Among the biggest obstacles associated with this concept are the contaminants that are present in raw fuels such as natural gas or coal. While gas-cleanup …

Choice Of Signaled Or Unsignaled Onset Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitudes, Ezra G. Hall Jan 2012

Choice Of Signaled Or Unsignaled Onset Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitudes, Ezra G. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the most common operant procedure involving magnitude of reinforcement, single reinforcers, of one magnitude or the other, are available from the same source (with pigeons, a food hopper) at different times. The duration of access as a source of discriminative control by these reinforcers comes sometime after their onset, when one reinforcer continues for a longer duration than the other. Thus, reinforcers of different durations can be differentially reinforcing only after the passage of some time. In the current experiment, four pigeons responded on a single-key concurrent variable-time schedule of reinforcement. Two reinforcer durations, 2 s and 6 s, …

Avoidance Of Timeout From Response-Independent Schedules Of Food Or Sucrose Water With And Without A Limited Hold On Consumption, August F. Holtyn Jan 2012

Avoidance Of Timeout From Response-Independent Schedules Of Food Or Sucrose Water With And Without A Limited Hold On Consumption, August F. Holtyn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research on the relative aversiveness of timeout from lean and rich schedules of food delivery has yielded discrepant findings. Some research has shown that a lean schedule maintains higher avoidance response rates than a rich schedule (Thomas, 1964, 1965b; van Haaren & Anderson, 1998)---suggesting that timeout from a lean schedule is more aversive than timeout from a rich schedule---while other research has shown the opposite (D'Andrea, 1971; Richardson & Baron, 2008). The present study was based on the notion that the conflicting results may have arisen from differences in procedural details that influenced the effect of the food schedules on …

Simplified Interior Ballistics Analysis Of A Tube Launched Uav Prototype, Edward R. Jackson Jan 2012

Simplified Interior Ballistics Analysis Of A Tube Launched Uav Prototype, Edward R. Jackson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Structural analysis is a critical aspect in the successful design of tube launched projectiles, such as mortar rounds. Ongoing research conducted at West Virginia University has focused on a tube-launched, folding-wing UAV design inspired by mortars. This has driven the necessity of a structural analysis of the prototype design to provide vital feedback to designers to ensure that the UAV is likely to survive the act of launching. Due to the extreme accelerations during the launching phase, a typical mortar round experiences dramatic impulse loads for an extremely brief duration of time. Such loads are the result of the propellant …

Rescue Of Inherited Retinal Degeneration Associated With Aipl1 Defects, Cristy Ann Ku Jan 2012

Rescue Of Inherited Retinal Degeneration Associated With Aipl1 Defects, Cristy Ann Ku

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since groundbreaking clinical trials treating Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) patients with retinal pigmented epithelium-specific 65 kDa protein (Rpe65) defects, which were the most successful gene therapy studies to date, much effort has been put into finding other candidate genes associated with inherited retinal degeneration to treat. Animal models with Rpe65 defects demonstrate an unusual circumstance that greatly favors treatment, where dramatic vision loss is disproportionately greater than the ensuing slow photoreceptor degeneration. This pattern is also believed to occur in Rpe65-LCA patients, and stems from the primary defect in retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells that subsequently perturbs photoreceptors. However, a …

Synthesis Of Benzofluorenyl Derivatives Bearing Thiophene Substituents, Doreen Makaya Jan 2012

Synthesis Of Benzofluorenyl Derivatives Bearing Thiophene Substituents, Doreen Makaya

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A four-step synthetic sequence was used to prepare 10-(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-5-thienyl-11 H-benzo[b]fluorene from pivalophenone. The key step of the synthetic sequence involved the Schmittel cascade cyclization reaction of the corresponding benzannulated enyne-allene having a thienyl substituent at the alkynyl terminus. The benzannulated enyne-allene was prepared by an initial condensation of pivalophenone with the lithium acetylide derived from 2-iodophenylethyne to form 3-(2-iodophenyl)-1-(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-l-phenyl-2-propyn-1-ol. Reduction of the propagylic alcohol with triethylsilane in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid then furnished 1-(1,1-iodophenyl)-3-(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-3-phenyl-1-propyne. The Sonogashira reaction with 2-ethynylthiophene then produced the corresponding 10-(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-5-thienyl-11H-benzo[b]fluorene from pivalophenone. Similarly, starting from benzophenone, 10-phenyl-5-thienyl-11 H-benzo[b]fluorene was obtained.;The X-ray …
