Planform Characterization Of A High Lift, Low Speed, Ground Effect Glider, Meagan L. Hubbell
Planform Characterization Of A High Lift, Low Speed, Ground Effect Glider, Meagan L. Hubbell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The main objective of this research was to design and develop a planform shape for a single passenger, unpowered, subsonic glider that relies on gravitational forces for momentum. The wing structure and aerodynamic shape optimized the benefits of near-ground flight (i.e. the increased lift and decreased induced drag), and as a result reduced the overall aircraft weight and wingspan, and enhanced the maneuverability of the craft.;The design faced many challenges as a result of flight in the ground effect regime. There were natural instabilities, primarily in the longitudinal direction that caused the glider to pitch up. In addition, the wing …
Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of A One-Dimensional Transient Entrained-Flow Gee/Texaco Coal Gasifier, Job S. Kasule
Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of A One-Dimensional Transient Entrained-Flow Gee/Texaco Coal Gasifier, Job S. Kasule
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Numerous gasifier models of varying complexity have been developed to study the various aspects of gasifier performance. These range from simple one-dimensional (1D) models to rigorous higher order 3D models based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Even though high-fidelity CFD models can accurately predict many key aspects of gasifier performance, they are computationally expensive and typically take hours to days to execute even on high-performance computers. Therefore, faster 1D partial differential equation (PDE)-based models are required for use in dynamic simulation studies, control system analysis, and training applications.;In the current study, a 1D transient model of a single-stage downward-firing entrained …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Risk Guidelines For Mining Near Impounding Structures And Bodies Of Water, Thomas Wachtel
Sensitivity Analysis Of Risk Guidelines For Mining Near Impounding Structures And Bodies Of Water, Thomas Wachtel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The coal mining industry has traditionally relied upon approaches that are principally based on US Bureau of Mines Information Circular (IC) 8741 by Babcock and Hooker (1977) for determining proximity distances and safety zones when mining under or near bodies of water. The proximity distance guidelines are limited by controlling the water inundation or seepage primarily for miners' safety. Since this initial work, research into mining under bodies of water has developed from subsidence studies performed by Kendorski (1993) and Bai et al. (1995). Recently, recovery of mineral reserves near bodies of water owned by the government is showing higher …
Coal Liquefaction Process Development, Christopher L. Yurchick
Coal Liquefaction Process Development, Christopher L. Yurchick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The traditional method of liquefying coal operates at extreme conditions consisting of hydrogen pressures of over 2000 pounds per square inch and temperatures of over 450°C. The elevated hydrogen pressure is necessary to hydrogenate the reaction mixture and liquefy the coal molecules. As a result, the processing equipment is very expensive and safety is a major concern. The coal liquefaction process invented at West Virginia University does not use hydrogen overpressure and operates below 500 pounds per square inch. The WVU process has produced 4500 pounds of cleaned de-ashed coal extract referred to as centrate. The centrate was processed into …

Synthesis Of Functional 1,2,3-Triazoles And Its Applications In Transition Metal Catalysis, Wuming Yan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several new methodologies for synthesizing functional 1,2,3-triazoles which include arylation, vinylation, propargylation and allenation, have been successfully developed. These resulting new methods are of great benefit to the organic chemists who are working on the research fields related to 1,2,3-triazoles. Particularly, the iron catalyzed propargylation and allenation have initiated the iron chemistry with 1,2,3-triazoles as the ligand. For example, our efforts led to the discovery of a practical approach for the synthesis of conjugated enynes that is challenging through conventional methods. In the synthesis of conjugated enyne, 1,2,3-triazoles were revealed as the only ligand effectively promoting this important and challenging …
Discrete Damage Mechanics Applied To Transverse Matrix Cracking, Fernando A. Cosso
Discrete Damage Mechanics Applied To Transverse Matrix Cracking, Fernando A. Cosso
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A constitutive model to predict the stiffness and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) reduction due to transverse matrix cracking in laminated composite structures is implemented as a user subroutine in Abaqus. The assumptions of the model are a symmetric laminate under in-plane loads and linear distribution of intralaminar shear stresses. The model was latter validated using 3D finite element analysis (FEA) in a repetitive unit volume for a wide interval of crack densities and for several laminates, and the difference was found to be within 3%. The FEA, the model and classical laminate theory all converged to the same values …

Predictors Of Adherence To Mammography Screening Guidelines And Preferences For Intervention Strategies In A Mobile Mammography Program, Ami Vyas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early detection of breast cancer (BC) in women can lead to long-term survival and better quality of life. Mammography screening is considered to be the 'gold standard' for women at an average risk to detect BC early and hence reduce BC-related mortality. West Virginia (WV) has a lower incidence of BC but higher rates of advanced and unstaged BC which has been attributed to lower mammography screening rates in women in WV. Mobile mammography programs have been in use for more than two decades to overcome barriers and increase mammography screening rates in rural and hard-to-reach populations. WV has one …

Degradation Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Anode In Phosphorus-Containing Coal Syngas, Jinlong Yan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coal is the dominant energy for electric power generation. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) has been proposed to be incorporated into the coal based power plant. Currently, Nickel-Yttria stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) composite is widely used as the anode in SOFCs (YSZ as electrolyte) due to its low-cost, high electric conductivity, and excellent catalytic activity for many fuel types. However, the long-term stability of the Ni/YSZ anode remains a major concern when a SOFC is operated using coal syngas. Poisoning by the impurity species in the coal syngas poses severe threat on the SOFCs. Of all the impurities present in coal …

Discrete Wavelet Transform Analysis Of Surface Electromyography For The Objective Assessment Of Neck And Shoulder Muscle Fatigue, Suman Kanti Chowdhury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Objective assessment of neuromuscular fatigue caused by sub-maximal repetitive exertions is essential for the early detection and prevention of risks of neck and shoulder musculoskeletal disorders. In recent years, discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) of surface electromyography (SEMG) has been used to evaluate muscle fatigue, especially during dynamic contractions when the SEMG signal is non-stationary. However, its application to neck muscle fatigue assessment is not well established. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish DWT analysis as a suitable method to conduct quantitative assessment of neck muscle fatigue caused by dynamic exertions. Ten human participants performed 40 minutes of …

This thesis examines the ideology and politics of Andrew Gregg Curtin throughout his entire career, specifically during his time as the governor of Pennsylvania in the American Civil War. As a self-described liberal, Curtin's vision for his state and nation was emblematic of broader Whig and Republican mentalities before and during the Civil War. Central to his ideas were notions of contractual theory, a harmony of interests between workers and industrialists, free labor, the right to property, and the rights of the individual to seek autonomy and agency in a democratic society. The outbreak of war expanded his sense of …
Durability Model Of Sofc Anode Structure Under Thermo-Mechanical And Fuel Gas Contaminants Effects, Gulfam Iqbal
Durability Model Of Sofc Anode Structure Under Thermo-Mechanical And Fuel Gas Contaminants Effects, Gulfam Iqbal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) operate under harsh environments, which cause the deterioration of anode material properties and reduce their service life. In addition to electrochemical performance, structural integrity of the SOFC anode is essential for successful long-term operation. Anode-supported SOFCs rely on the anode to provide mechanical strength to the positive-electrolyte-negative (PEN) structure. The stress field in the anode may arise from a variety of phenomena including thermal expansion mismatch between layers in the PEN structure, thermal/redox cycles and external mechanical loads. Moreover, some fuel contaminants such as phosphine (PH3) interact with the anode materials which lead to the …
Development Of A Near-Field Magnetic Projectile Location System, Andrew D. Lowery
Development Of A Near-Field Magnetic Projectile Location System, Andrew D. Lowery
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Near-field magnetic principles and properties have been well studied and are used in a plethora of modern applications, ranging from medical applications to audio and video processing, and magnetic tracking. Current tracking applications are based in either AC or Pulsed-DC systems. Generally, AC systems have high resolution and accuracy, but perform very poorly in the presence of conducting magnetic materials. Pulsed-DC tracking has the benefit of not inducing large eddy currents in proximity to magnetic materials, thus increasing its overall accuracy. It has been suggested that pure DC systems are not feasible because they are unable to account for the …
Distributed Estimation Of A Parametric Field Using Spatially Sparse Noisy Data., Marwan M. Alkhweldi
Distributed Estimation Of A Parametric Field Using Spatially Sparse Noisy Data., Marwan M. Alkhweldi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem of distributed estimation of a parametric physical field is stated as a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem. Spatially sparse sensor observations are distorted by additive white Gaussian noise. These observations are then communicated over parallel additive white Gaussian channels to the fusion center (FC) for a joint estimation. This work studies cases of both analog and digital channels. In the case of the analog channel, each sensor transmits its observation without any prior processing. A Newton’s method is used to iteratively solve for ML estimates of unknown parameters of the field. In the case of the digital channel, …
Wellbore Integrity Study For Horizontal Shale Gas Well., Adam Wade
Wellbore Integrity Study For Horizontal Shale Gas Well., Adam Wade
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the wellbore integrity for horizontal shale gas wells using geomechanical properties of shale gas reservoirs to better predict rock behavior, more specifically the maximum stress around the wellbore. Real reservoir properties were used to construct a hypothetical model. A single horizontal well was utilized to analyze the rock behavior. Because we are looking to analyze the geomechanics of the reservoir, two models must be constructed. A reservoir model was first built and then coupled with a more precise geomechanic model. The base model, without any hydraulic fracturing or other stimulation treatments, was …

This thesis demonstrates that although the PWAP stipulated that there was to …
Investigation Of Gadolinium Based Pyrochlores For Their Use In High-Temperature Nano-Derived Hydrogen Gas Sensors., Christina Wildfire
Investigation Of Gadolinium Based Pyrochlores For Their Use In High-Temperature Nano-Derived Hydrogen Gas Sensors., Christina Wildfire
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is a large need for microsensors that have a quick response, can be implemented cheaply and operate at low power. These sensors must also be sensitive to specific chemistries and have little to no cross-sensitivity to other stimuli in the environment. Previous researchers have shown that the incorporation of nanomaterials as the selective material resulted in very high sensitivity. Unfortunately, these nanomaterials are unstable at high temperatures due to sintering and coarsening. Therefore, within this work, new hydrogen selective nanomaterials will be investigated for these micro sensors that will be highly selective to hydrogen and be stable within the …

Coca Or Death! The Political Ecology Of Cocalero Resistance A Comparative Analysis Of The Coca Farmer Social Movement In Andean Peru., Timothy Scott Pruett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research focuses on the resistance of coca farmers to government policies regarding coca production in Peru. Since the 1980s, the Peruvian government has criminalized the actions of numerous agricultural communities and conducted eradication campaigns that destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of Peruvian coca. Although eradication is intended to reduce the volume of coca leaves destined for black markets (cocaine production), it has had the unintended consequence of mobilizing peasant coca producing populations against such policies. Mobilization is reflected in protests, strikes, marches, and occasionally violent confrontations. Some coca farmers (cocaleros) are following a cultural heritage of producing a …
