Tracer Gas Exposure Of Human Subjects Doing Simulated Work At A Benchtop Enclosing Hood In A Wind Tunnel, Rolando A. Carreno-Chavez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Local exhaust ventilation devices (LEV) are critical in protecting workers from harmful airborne contaminants. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors that affect the performance of a benchtop enclosing hood. A Freon 134ahelium mixture was released from a 9" diameter pie-pan placed on the floor of a 30" high by 36" wide hood at 2" from the hood face. Freon 134a was measured close to the nose and mouth for a simple manikin (unheated and not breathing), a complex manikin (heated and breathing), and ten human subjects at different times while they stood at the face of …
Fate And Transport Of Methamphetamine And Related Compounds In Remediated Clandestine Laboratories, Holly A. Mccall
Fate And Transport Of Methamphetamine And Related Compounds In Remediated Clandestine Laboratories, Holly A. Mccall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Remediation of clandestine laboratories has become a national concern due to health and environmental concerns. To date, remarkably little has been published regarding the fate and transport of methamphetamine in clandestine laboratories, both before and after remediation. The fate and transport of methamphetamine in an indoor air environment is an inherently complex process, where the drug can move as either particulate matter or vapor. The ability to diffuse throughout a building structure increases the need for analysis techniques that can evaluate potential exposure by various means. This research investigated three analytical methods for the detection of methamphetamine: ion mobility spectrometry …
Regulation Of Anoikis By Oncogenic Pathways, Sun Hee Park
Regulation Of Anoikis By Oncogenic Pathways, Sun Hee Park
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Detachment of epithelial cells from matrix or attachment to an inappropriate matrix engages an apoptotic response known as anoikis, which prevents metastasis. Anoikis-resistance of tumor cells is critical for anchorage-independent growth and metastasis. Here we show two novel oncogenic pathways that confer resistance to anoikis in tumor cells. One pathway (chapter 2) signifies a new link between EMT and anoikis-resistance. In chapter 3, we present a new connection between inflammatory signaling pathways and anoikis-resistance. Cellular sensitivity to anoikis is compromised during the oncogenic epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), through various mechanisms. Chapter 2 introduces a novel mechanism (NRAGE/TBX2/p14ARF) that is induced upon …
Two-Photon Absorption Laser Induced Fluorescence Measurements Of Neutral Density In Helicon Plasma, Matthew E. Galante
Two-Photon Absorption Laser Induced Fluorescence Measurements Of Neutral Density In Helicon Plasma, Matthew E. Galante
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Neutral particles play a critical role in plasma experiments. They simultaneously act as a source of particles and a sink of momentum and energy. Also, they act as an intermediary between the plasma and surrounding material walls. However, few methods exist to make localized, direct neutral density measurements. A new diagnostic, based on two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence (TALIF), capable of making direct ground state measurement is developed. A high intensity (5 MW/cm2), narrow bandwidth (0.1 cm -1) laser is used to directly probe the ground state of neutral hydrogen, deuterium and krypton. The diagnostic represents an improvement over traditional …
The Evolution Of The Paleopolyploid Genome In Family Salicaceae, Eli Rodgers-Melnick
The Evolution Of The Paleopolyploid Genome In Family Salicaceae, Eli Rodgers-Melnick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Whole genome duplication is a recurrent phenomenon throughout the history of flowering plants, with at least 1 occuring in the history of each angiosperm lineage. However, following duplication the genome typically undergoes a period of increased structural rearrangements and gene loss, resulting in a diploidized genome with large stretches of syntenic regions resulting from the duplication. This process, termed fractionation, often exhibits biased patterns of gene retention, which appear to correspond with the putative connectedness of genes within biological networks. In this thesis, I explore the extent to which the same biases appear in duplicate genes from the most recent …

An Investigation Of Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis Using A Trigonometric Potential, James Vopal
An Investigation Of Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis Using A Trigonometric Potential, James Vopal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traveling-wave electrophoresis, a technique for microfluidic separations in lab-on-achip devices, is investigated using a trigonometric model that naturally incorporates the spatial periodicity of the device. Traveling-wave electrophoresis can be used to separate high-mobility ions from low-mobility ions in forensic and medical applications, with a separation threshold that can be tuned for specific applications by simply choosing the traveling wave frequency. Our simulations predict plateaus in the average ion velocity verses the mobility, plateaus that correspond to Farey fractions and yield Devil's staircases for non-zero discreteness values. The plateaus indicate that ions with different mobilities can travel with the same average …

Houses Of History And Homepages: Museums Of Communism In Eastern And Central Europe And Their Online Presence, Alexandra Day Coffman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Museums of communism have been appearing all over Central and Eastern Europe, as has the interest in them. Memorabilia sells well and tourists are interested in what life was like behind the Iron Curtain. If these museums show how they present, represent, and deal with the recent past, museum websites also give insight into the museums' greater outreach. Communism is portrayed in several ways in different countries, but they generally depict the country as a victim of Soviet rule and influence. This study examines resources that are available for the global audience and observes how engaged the museums are in …
The Social Support For International Graduate Students To Obtain Academic Success, Ping He
The Social Support For International Graduate Students To Obtain Academic Success, Ping He
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous studies suggest that international graduate students' academic success is significantly associated with the average grade point (GPA), and this measure is closely related with international graduate students' received academic and financial supports. However, international graduate students' academic success can involve a multidimensional measurement besides the average grade point (GPA). Hence, the current study explored the correlation between international graduate students' perceived social support and perceived academic success from an inclusive perspective. The perceived social support included the categories of academic support, financial support, emotional support and spiritual support. The perceived academic success included the aspects of knowledge learning, research …

Perceived Burdensomeness, Thwarted Belongingness And Acquired Capability For Suicide: Suicidal Risk Factors In An Incarcerated Population, Sarra Nazem
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in incarcerated individuals. Previous research suggests that prior suicidal behaviors, history of substance abuse/dependence, and depressive symptoms are common risk factors associated with death by suicide in incarcerated populations. Additionally, offenders who have committed violent crimes, are incarcerated in higher security institutions, and have longer sentences are also at increased risk for suicide. Although research has identified risk factors for suicidal behaviors, there has been very little theory-driven research on suicidal behaviors in incarcerated populations. Joiner's interpersonal theory of suicide (Joiner, 2005; Van Orden et al., 2010) may be an especially …

Alternative Breaks: The Impact Of Student-To-Student Connections In Non-Classroom Service-Learning Experiences, Zac D. Johnson
Alternative Breaks: The Impact Of Student-To-Student Connections In Non-Classroom Service-Learning Experiences, Zac D. Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Alternative breaks represent a new tradition in collegiate service learning (Campus Connect, 2011), wherein students forego traditional break activities (e.g., vacations) to participate in community service with their peers through university sponsored programs. Despite their growing popularity these programs are understudied. Research that has examined alternative breaks has arrived at claims based on anecdotal data (e.g., DuPre, 2010; Noll, 2012). This dissertation investigated two claims found in alternative break literature: students forge connections (e.g., DuPre, 2010, McElhaney, 1998) and alternative break experiences have a long reaching impact on students (e.g., Barclay, 2010; McElhaney, 1998; Noll, 2012). This was accomplished through …

Involvement Of Cytochromep4504a In Adenosine A1 Receptor Mediated Regulation Of Vascular Tone, Swati S Kunduri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The regulation of vascular tone plays an important role in normal cardiovascular function. Adenosine, an autacoid has several physiological and pathophysiological roles, apart from the regulation of vascular tone. Adenosine receptor (AR) contracts and relaxes blood vessels through all four subtypes (A1, A2A, A2B, and A3) linked to different signaling mechanisms. Deciphering complex tissue responses remains difficult because relationships of individual receptor subtypes and various end-effectors (e.g., ion channels) are yet to be identified. Apart from adenosine, 20-HETE, a cytochrome P4504a (Cyp4a) metabolite of arachidonic acid (AA) …

Institutional Integration As A Predictor Of Success In At-Risk First-Year College Students, Jan-Erin Miller
Institutional Integration As A Predictor Of Success In At-Risk First-Year College Students, Jan-Erin Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As earning a postsecondary degree becomes more necessary in the preparation for future employment, many of this nation's four-year colleges and universities are admitting underprepared students who are at-risk for poor academic performance and early departure from the institutions. There are a myriad of factors and characteristics that can cause students to be labeled at-risk, including being a first-generation student, coming from a lower socioeconomic environment, and having certain personality traits. At-risk college students have higher incidence of departure from the institutions, which can produce emotional distress and long-lasting financial obligations. Over the past thirty years, research in the area …

The technique that is named Artificial Intelligence (AI) Based Reservoir Modeling is a formalized and comprehensive, full-field empirical reservoir model. It …
On The Origin Of Shame: Feelings Of Disgust Toward The Self, John A. Terrizzi Jr.
On The Origin Of Shame: Feelings Of Disgust Toward The Self, John A. Terrizzi Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Shame and disgust are believed to be evolved psychological solutions to different adaptive challenges and, thus, independent emotions. Shame is thought to promote the maintenance of social hierarchies (Gilbert, 1997; Fessler, 2004), whereas disgust is believed to encourage disease avoidance (Curtis et al., 2004; Oaten et al., 2009). Although shame and disgust are often treated as orthogonal emotions, they share some important commonalities. Both shame and disgust involve bodily concerns, have been described as moral emotions, and encourage avoidance of social interaction. The purpose of the current studies was to investigate the relation between shame and disgust. More specifically, the …
Early And Late Stage Mechanisms For Vocalization Processing In The Human Auditory System, William James Talkington
Early And Late Stage Mechanisms For Vocalization Processing In The Human Auditory System, William James Talkington
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The human auditory system is able to rapidly process incoming acoustic information, actively filtering, categorizing, or suppressing different elements of the incoming acoustic stream. Vocalizations produced by other humans (conspecifics) likely represent the most ethologically-relevant sounds encountered by hearing individuals. Subtle acoustic characteristics of these vocalizations aid in determining the identity, emotional state, health, intent, etc. of the producer. The ability to assess vocalizations is likely subserved by a specialized network of structures and functional connections that are optimized for this stimulus class. Early elements of this network would show sensitivity to the most basic acoustic features of these sounds; …

Adult Characteristics Associated With Gender-Typed Toy Ratings, Rachel R. Stoiko
Adult Characteristics Associated With Gender-Typed Toy Ratings, Rachel R. Stoiko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The toys with which children play shape their development in several domains (Trawick-Smith, Russell, & Swaminathan, 2011). Exclusive or primary play with gender-typed toys may limit children's development, because toys considered appropriate for boys, girls, or both have different characteristics (Blakemore & Centers, 2005; Serbin & Connor, 1979). Especially in infancy and early childhood, children's toy play is affected by adults (parent and nonparent), who may differentially provide access to and/or reinforce play with different toys (Kane, 2006). The variability in adults' attitudes regarding the gender-appropriateness of toys is not well-understood.;The purpose of this study was to examine the relations …
Aging Effects Of The Cathode And Determination Of Single Electrode Performance In A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Xiaoke Chen
Aging Effects Of The Cathode And Determination Of Single Electrode Performance In A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Xiaoke Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising electrochemical energy conversion devices due to their advantages of high theoretical efficiency, fuel flexibility (including hydrogen and carbon monoxide), scalability, and low emission. An important problem for commercially using the SOFCs is to improve the long term stability for the SOFCs. To improve the lifetime of SOFCs and develop innovative electrode microstructures; we need to understand the individual process including the degradation processes to the cathode or the anode. To identify the independent anode and cathode contributions to the total impedance, one conventional electrochemical tool for evaluation is the reference electrode. Although reference …
