Three Essays On Economic Growth And Natural Resources, Anne W. Walker
Three Essays On Economic Growth And Natural Resources, Anne W. Walker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is a collection of papers examining the relationship between resource intensity and economic growth in the Appalachian region of the United States. The first chapter develops a homogenous sample of counties within the Appalachian region and uses that sample to investigate how coal resources impact long-run per capita income growth. The Appalachian Regional Commission's definition of the Appalachian region is the one used most often by researchers, politicians, and the popular press. The uncritical use of this definition of Appalachia raises issues of both selection bias and excess heterogeneity in regression analysis of Appalachian income and growth. The …

Administrator And Faculty Perceptions Of Incivility And Conflict In The Workplace: A Higher Education Study, Stacey Mcleran Kendig
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Uncivil workplace behavior in the higher education environment is counterproductive for achieving institutional goals. Prevailing uncivil behaviors frequently result in unresolved conflict, a focus of various researchers since the mid 1970's (Andersson & Pearson, 1999; Martin & Hine, 2005; Pierre & Peppers, 1976; Pietersen, 2005; and Twale & DeLuca, 2008). This study was designed to examine administrator and faculty members' perceptions of uncivil workplace behaviors and organizational culture. The study further examined the relationship between incivility and organizational culture. The Uncivil Workplace Behavior Questionnaire (Martin & Hine, 2005) and the K & C Organizational Culture Instrument (Kendig & Chapman, 2012) …

The Streptococcal Collagen-Like Protein-1 (Scl1) Is A Multifunctional Adhesin In Extracellular Matrix Interactions, Biofilm Formation, And Host Colonization By Group A Streptococcus, Heaven A. Oliver-Kozup
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is responsible for over 100 million skin infections annually that may lead to invasive episodes and autoimmune sequelaes. Wounds and unapparent skin infringements are susceptible to the introduction of GAS and serve as a portal of entry. The nutritional nature of a wound and the accessibility to exposed host cell surfaces and extracellular matrix components create a model milieu for successful host colonization and potential biofilm formation. The initiation of biofilm is often mediated by bacterial surface adhesins and has been shown to interfere with wound healing by blocking critical host cellular interactions. However, the underlying …

White Collar Crime And Morality: How Occupation Shapes Perception, Marshall Schmidt
White Collar Crime And Morality: How Occupation Shapes Perception, Marshall Schmidt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
White-collar crime is on the rise in the United States and globally. The general public has historically been seen as apathetic to white-collar criminals and their crimes; however more recent studies have shown that prior conclusions on perceptions of white-collar criminals may have been inaccurate. In this paper, I examine the role that occupation has in forming perceptions of white-collar criminals. Using Status Characteristics Theory, a structural social psychological theory that links an individual's status characteristics to evaluations of their morality, trustworthiness and competency, vignette experiments are constructed that allow for offender status and offense seriousness in various white collar …

Evaluation Of The Newburg Sandstone Of The Appalachian Basin As A Co2 Geologic Storage Resource, Jack Eric Lewis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The West Virginia Division of Energy is currently evaluating several deep saline formations in the Appalachian basin of West Virginia, which may be potential carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration targets. The Silurian Newburg Sandstone play, developed in the 1970's, primarily involves natural gas production from reservoir rock with welldeveloped porosity and permeability. High initial pressures encountered in early wells in the Newburg indicate that the overlying Silurian Salina Formation provides a competent seal. Due to the large number of CO2 point sources in the region and the favorable reservoir properties of the formation; including an estimated 300 billion cubic feet (bcf) …

Using Empathy In Design To Foster Interest In Social Issues, Kofi Opoku
Using Empathy In Design To Foster Interest In Social Issues, Kofi Opoku
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Design has transformed from being merely a product oriented discipline focused on the promotion of consumer goods to become a goal oriented practice seeking to address the needs and challenges faced by people in their communities. Conventionally, most designers have engaged various processes that help identify the real needs of an audience in order to develop effective solutions. Designing for social change presents the interesting challenge of reaching audience members who may not be directly affected by an issue to become invested in communityled transformations. My thesis uses the context of homelessness to examine how empathic techniques can be employed …

Political Violence And Unemployment: Socio-Economic Strain As A Potential Source Of Terrorism, Reinmar C. Freis-Beattie
Political Violence And Unemployment: Socio-Economic Strain As A Potential Source Of Terrorism, Reinmar C. Freis-Beattie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Why do some people commit acts of violence which are politically or ideologically motivated? Furthermore, why does the United States see such great variation in the number of terrorist incidents from year to year? To help answer these questions, Robert Agnew's (2010) General Strain Theory of Terrorism lays out a foundational model to explain what might cause terrorism. In contrast to previous strain theories, General Strain Theory of Terrorism argues that the strains most likely to result in terrorism are collective strains which are (a) high in magnitude, with civilians affected; (b) perceived as unjust; and (c) inflicted by more …
The Explosion Of Ethnic Retributive Violence In Czechoslovakia At The End Of The Second World War, Bryson David Taylor
The Explosion Of Ethnic Retributive Violence In Czechoslovakia At The End Of The Second World War, Bryson David Taylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The end of the Second World War was not the end of the explosion of human rights abuses from the Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe. In Czechoslovakia as well as Poland, there were outbreaks of retributive violence driven toward the German ethnic minorities present within their liberated boundaries. In both cases, the governments of Poland and Czechoslovakia began a state sponsored, and Potsdam Conference approved program, of "orderly and humane" expulsions. While most twentieth and twenty first century historians have attributed these actions in Czechoslovakia as a continuation of the historical relationship between the Czechs and Germans of Bohemia and …
Optimal Certifying Algorithms For Linear And Lattice Point Feasibility In A System Of Utvpi Constraints, Piotr Jerzy Wojciechowski
Optimal Certifying Algorithms For Linear And Lattice Point Feasibility In A System Of Utvpi Constraints, Piotr Jerzy Wojciechowski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis is concerned with the design and analysis of time-optimal and spaceoptimal, certifying algorithms for checking the linear and lattice point feasibility of a class of constraints called Unit Two Variable Per Inequality (UTVPI) constraints. In a UTVPI constraint, there are at most two non-zero variables per constraint, and the coefficients of the non-zero variables belong to the set {lcub}+1, --1{rcub}. These constraints occur in a number of application domains, including but not limited to program verification, abstract interpretation, and operations research. As per the literature, the fastest known certifying algorithm for checking lattice point feasibility in UTVPI constraint …

This study builds upon that tradition by exploring Latino business owners in West Virginia. The study will address the following research questions: · Why are there so few Latino Entrepreneurs in West Virginia? · What are the entrepreneurial issues identified by Latino business owners in West Virginia?;This research was done with two main objectives in mind: To …
Disulfide Bridging The Gap Between Src And Cortactin: A New Paradigm In Sh2 Domain-Mediated Signaling, Jason Vanburen Evans
Disulfide Bridging The Gap Between Src And Cortactin: A New Paradigm In Sh2 Domain-Mediated Signaling, Jason Vanburen Evans
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Src and cortactin are cytoplasmic proteins that are implicated in cancer progression and metastasis. Src is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase that also regulates normal cell homeostasis through phosphorylation of multiple downstream substrates. Cortactin is an actin binding protein and nucleation promoting factor that promotes the formation of stable branching networks within the actin cytoskeleton. Together, these proteins work in concert to promote the invasive and metastatic potential of tumor cells due to tyrosine phosphorylation of cortactin by Src. However, the mechanistic details of the interaction between Src and cortactin have never been elucidated. Collectively, this work aims to define how …
Experimentally Determined Equivalent Roughness Values For Two Types Of Longitudinal Straight Duct Produced By A Small Company, Raphael W. Alwin Dodrill
Experimentally Determined Equivalent Roughness Values For Two Types Of Longitudinal Straight Duct Produced By A Small Company, Raphael W. Alwin Dodrill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study evaluates the static pressure losses due to friction in longitudinal straight ducts. These losses are related to the flow properties (velocity, density, etc.) by means of the Darcy friction factor, f. In the case of hydraulically smooth wall conditions the f value is related to the Reynold's number (Re), while for rough conditions it is dominated by the relative roughness (epsilon/Dh). The Colebrook equation is often used to determine the f value as it also provides a reasonable value when the flow is in the transient region between hydraulically smooth and rough wall conditions.;Experimental data was collected for …

Quality Assessment And Prediction In Software Product Lines, Thomas Ryan Devine
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
At the heart of product line development is the assumption that through structured reuse later products will be of a higher quality and require less time and effort to develop and test. This thesis presents empirical results from two case studies aimed at assessing the quality aspect of this claim and exploring fault prediction in the context of software product lines. The first case study examines pre-release faults and change proneness of four products in PolyFlow, a medium-sized, industrial software product line; the second case study analyzes post-release faults using pre-release data over seven releases of four products in Eclipse, …
Economic Demagoguery: The Limited Effects Of Presidential Rhetoric, Charles Damien Arthur
Economic Demagoguery: The Limited Effects Of Presidential Rhetoric, Charles Damien Arthur
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Given that there exists considerable disagreement about whether the president has a direct and measurable influence over the economy, I decided to research this divergence of views further (Edwards, 2003; Edwards, 2009; Eshbaugh-Soha, 2005; Wood, 2007; Dolan, Frendreis, & Tatalovich, 2008; Cohen, 1995; Beck, 1982; Golden & Poterba, 1980). In my review of the literature, I found that there is research, improperly measured from my perspective, that claims the president is the most powerful economic leader in the United States and that his words have the power to move economic actors and indicators (Wood, 2007). To show these effects statistically, …
Evaluation Of Rope Shovel Operators In Surface Coal Mining Using A Multi-Attribute Decision-Making Model, Ivana M. Vukotic
Evaluation Of Rope Shovel Operators In Surface Coal Mining Using A Multi-Attribute Decision-Making Model, Ivana M. Vukotic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rope shovels are used to dig and load material in surface mines. One of the main factors that influence the productivity and energy consumption of rope shovels is the performance of the operator. Existing methods of evaluating operator performance do not consider the relationship between production rate and energy consumption. This thesis presents a method for evaluating rope shovel operators using the Multi-Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) model. Data used in this research were collected from an operating surface coal mine in the southern United States. The MADM model used in this research consists of attributes, their weights of importance, and alternatives. …
Applications Of Surface And Subsurface Subsidence Theories To Solve Ground Control Problems, Biao Qiu
Applications Of Surface And Subsurface Subsidence Theories To Solve Ground Control Problems, Biao Qiu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The stability of the underground mine openings largely depends on the surrounding ground conditions, such as stress concentrations, geological conditions and support intensities etc. In particular, the ground control stability associated with large movements and deformations of the strata is much more complicated and could induce much more severe safety problems. A ground control failure could endanger the coal miner's safety not only directly by roof, pillar, floor and/or rib failure, but also by ground cracks induced methane and water inundations indirectly. This study is aimed to develop comprehensive models to simulate the ground response to mining and solve the …
Factors Considered For Increasing Longwall Panel Width, Jack D. Trackemas
Factors Considered For Increasing Longwall Panel Width, Jack D. Trackemas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Longwall mining is the preferred method in coal mining to maximize production and reserve recovery by extracting large blocks of coal that have been outlined with a set of continuous miner development entries. In the US, technological advances and system enhancements have steadily improved productivity more in the longwall retreat process as compared to the improvements in continuous miner gateroad development process. Consequently, longwall extraction rates have outpaced gateroad development mining advancement.;This thesis addresses the factors considered for increasing panel width and the solutions to the technical concerns for increasing the longwall face width from the current accepted industry standard …
The Integration Of A Coal Mine Emergency Communication Network Into Pre-Mine Planning And Development, Mark F. Sindelar
The Integration Of A Coal Mine Emergency Communication Network Into Pre-Mine Planning And Development, Mark F. Sindelar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Regulations, such as the MINER Act of 2006, require the installation of redundant and secondary communication systems to assure that contact can be established with coal miners who may become trapped underground as a result of an event such as a fire, explosion, or inundation. For half a century, the orientation towards underground communications has been that more complex systems better serve the coal miner. However, if the goal is to provide for a reliable means of establishing communication between the surface and trapped miners underground, then the technology employed should be simple, reliable, and cost-effective. Coal mines spend hundreds …
