Reconstructing Δ14c Production Events Using Tree Rings: Does Tree Physiology Affect Estimates Of Atmospheric Δ14c?, Meagan Rory Walker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cosmic rays and solar energetic particles (SEP) bombard the Earth’s geomagnetic field, posing a threat to satellites, space stations, and human space exploration. These rays and particles also produce radiocarbon (14C) in Earth’s atmosphere, thus records of past 14C concentration in the atmosphere may be indicative of past cosmic and solar activity. Rapid increases in the concentration of atmospheric radiocarbon 14C, (Miyake events) first identified in tree rings, are thought to be a result of solar eruptive activity triggering the release of solar energetic particles, though the precise nature of past events remains unresolved. The first …

Regulation Of Diabetic Cardiomyopathy Through Mitochondrial Import Of Long Non-Coding Rnas, Andrew Dodge Taylor Jan 2024

Regulation Of Diabetic Cardiomyopathy Through Mitochondrial Import Of Long Non-Coding Rnas, Andrew Dodge Taylor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction: The leading cause of mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus is heart failure. When mitochondrial health and function is disrupted, cardiac contractile function is compromised. Therefore, understanding mitochondrial regulation may benefit predicting and countering diabetic cardiomyopathy. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in diabetic cardiac mitochondrial protein expression. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to regulate miRNAs, but not in the mitochondrion. Additionally, it has yet to be confirmed if lncRNAs utilize the same mechanisms for mitochondrial import that miRNAs use, or if lncRNA presence in the mitochondrion fluctuates in diabetic mitochondria like miRNA presence does. The …

On Uncertainty For Ill-Posed Robot Decision Problems, Jared Joseph Beard Jan 2024

On Uncertainty For Ill-Posed Robot Decision Problems, Jared Joseph Beard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As robots adopt more real world responsibilities, they will be expected to solve more complicated problems. In some cases limited prior knowledge will result in unmodelled environmental conditions; in others, multiple users may have competing perspectives on how to frame a decision problem. Many existing frameworks, namely Markov decision processes (MDP) presuppose users have identified a specific problem with models sufficient to solve or learn a problem. If we wish to extend MDPs to novel problems or those heavily dependent on user feedback, autonomous decision makers must be able to identify limitations in how a given problem is framed and …

Planar Semiconductor-Superconductor Topological Quantum Devices: Realistic Modeling Tools, Purna Prasad Paudel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Planar semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) heterostructures hold significant promise for realizing topological superconductivity and hosting Majorana zero modes (MZMs) --- particle-hole symmetric quasiparticle excitations that emerge as localized zero-energy modes either at the edges of one-dimensional topological SCs or at the vortex cores of two-dimensional topological SCs. Due to their non-Abelian exchange statistics and topological protection, MZMs are prime candidates for constructing topological qubits and achieving fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. Despite notable progress, significant experimental and engineering challenges remain to realizing functional MZM-based qubits. One major challenge is the small topological gap achievable in these systems, rendering MZMs fragile against disorder. Additionally, …

Astrocyte Reprogramming By Th17 Cells In Autoimmune Neuroinflammation: Mechanisms And Implications, Sarah Marie Milne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a cell-mediated, demyelinating autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). T helper (Th) 17 cells mediate the pathogenesis of MS and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), in part by infiltrating the CNS and interacting with astrocytes, a resident glial cell. Astrocytes are central to coordinating several inflammatory processes in the CNS and can respond to cytokines and chemokines produced by encephalitogenic Th17 cells. Pathogenesis of MS and EAE requires the infiltration of immune cells from the periphery, including autoreactive T cells, B cells, monocytes, and neutrophils, that lead to neuroinflammation, demyelination, and …

Dynamic Load Identification Using Optimal Sensor Placement And Dynamic Condensation Methods, Iole Pecora Jan 2024

Dynamic Load Identification Using Optimal Sensor Placement And Dynamic Condensation Methods, Iole Pecora

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Knowledge of excitation loads that structures experience during their service life is pivotal in different engineering fields, not only from a structural design optimization point of view but also as prevention of possible damages to the structures themselves. However, in case of dynamic events such as tornadoes, structures subjected to impulsive load due to their vicinity of explosions, the excitation load cannot be directly determined through direct measurements. In these scenarios, the inverse problem is used, and it is called load identification. This type of problem tries to determine the excitation load knowing the system response through a series of …
