Modeling Of Outer Radiation Belt Electron Scattering Due To Spatial And Spectral Properties Of Ulf Waves, Mattias Tornquist
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The research presented in this thesis covers wave-particle interactions for relativistic (0.5-10 MeV) electrons in Earth's outer radiation belt (r = 3-7 RE, or L-shells: L = 3-7) interacting with magnetospheric Pc-5 (ULF) waves. This dissertation focuses on ideal models for short and long term electron energy and radial position scattering caused by interactions with ULF waves.;We use test particle simulations to investigate these wave-particle interactions with ideal wave and magnetic dipole fields. We demonstrate that the wave-particle phase can cause various patterns in phase space trajectories, i.e. local acceleration, and that for a global electron population, for all initial …
Impacts Of Non-Renewable Resource Extraction On Shrubland Songbird Nest Success And Abundance, Ryan Douglas Davis
Impacts Of Non-Renewable Resource Extraction On Shrubland Songbird Nest Success And Abundance, Ryan Douglas Davis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Shrubland songbirds are a highly imperiled guild across much of North America due to wide-scale land use changes and resulting loss of shrubland habitat. Land management practices which produce early-successional habitat, namely field abandonment and clearcut timber harvests, have become increasingly uncommon in the eastern United States, and natural maintenance processes such as fires and floods are often suppressed. The Appalachian region is rich in natural resources; it has historically seen high amounts of surface mining for coal and is currently experiencing prolific development of shale gas. Both of these practices alter local habitats and the landscape, and it is …

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's Approach Toward Contemporary Curatorial Practice, Marsha Goss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study is an analysis of contemporary curatorial practice at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, New York. The Guggenheim Museum demonstrates how contemporary museums are updating exhibition practice, despite the difficulties of spatial engagement encountered in Frank Lloyd Wright's building. This thesis presents an analysis of the curator-as-artist, meaning that frequently contemporary curators are acting like artists as they seek to elevate audience engagement. An initial chapter explores how Wright originally conceived the museum as an exhibition space compared to how it is used in current times. Two recent Guggenheim exhibitions, Gutai: Splendid Playground (2013) and James …
The Hot Struggle Over The Cold Waters: The Strategic Position Of The Arctic Region During And After The Cold War, Magdalena Nowak
The Hot Struggle Over The Cold Waters: The Strategic Position Of The Arctic Region During And After The Cold War, Magdalena Nowak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Arctic became a hot spot on the global map and discussion over the cold waters became an important issue in international relations. During the Cold War, as it is today, the Arctic was a separate area of rivalry between the superpowers. Despite the fact that today's debate is based on different issues, including sovereignty over the region, potential access to natural resources and the status of international waters, there is still a strong military component to the competing interests, as there was during the Cold War.

Human Interaction Recognition With Audio And Visual Cues, Ranya Almohsen
Human Interaction Recognition With Audio And Visual Cues, Ranya Almohsen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The automated recognition of human activities from video is a fundamental problem with applications in several areas, ranging from video surveillance, and robotics, to smart healthcare, and multimedia indexing and retrieval, just to mention a few. However, the pervasive diffusion of cameras capable of recording audio also makes available to those applications a complementary modality. Despite the sizable progress made in the area of modeling and recognizing group activities, and actions performed by people in isolation from video, the availability of audio cues has rarely being leveraged. This is even more so in the area of modeling and recognizing binary …
Effects Of Long-Term Phonological Knowledge On Learning New Words, Elizabeth S. Smith
Effects Of Long-Term Phonological Knowledge On Learning New Words, Elizabeth S. Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Language learning has been attributed to multiple aspects of cognition; two primary components are phonological short-term memory and long-term knowledge. Short-term memory is responsible for the temporary storage and rehearsal of new information, and long-term knowledge is responsible for storing information gained throughout the lifetime. If one or both of these areas are found to be deficient, language impairments may be present. Although the role of short-term memory and long-term knowledge has been identified as important, their relative contributions to different language processes are not completely understood. This study used a novel within-subjects approach to examine the impact of long-term …

American educational reformers have noted an urgent need to develop and integrate pedagogical practices that promotes real world experiences that engage students in service and develops critical thinking skills of students. The reemergence of service-learning builds on an alternative vision of higher education that commenced with Dewey's theories of experiential learning. To meet the need of developing critical thinking skills among today's students, some researchers have proposed that integration of service-learning programs may produce a number of student learning outcomes, including critical thinking. Responding to calls for colleges to engage students in real world problems through service-learning, in 1985 Campus …
Effects Of Maturation, Polyploidy, And Nutrition On Growth, Composition, And Gene Expression Within Fatty Acid Metabolism In Rainbow Trout, Meghan Lynn Manor
Effects Of Maturation, Polyploidy, And Nutrition On Growth, Composition, And Gene Expression Within Fatty Acid Metabolism In Rainbow Trout, Meghan Lynn Manor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In many cultured fish species, such as salmonids, gonadal development occurs at the expense of stored energy and nutrients, including lipids. Mobilization of intramuscular lipid during gonadal development decreases fillet quality. The aquaculture industry induces triploidy to generate sterile individuals; however, differences in lipid metabolism of female diploid (2N) and triploid (3N) trout may alter fillet quality. In addition, there is concern that genetic selection for increased growth negatively impacts fillet quality and muscle lipid content. Research in these areas would aid in the development of better management practices for efficient food-fish production that optimizes product quality.;The goal of this …

Cbct Evaluation Of Condylar Changes In Children With Unilateral Posterior Crossbites With A Functional Shift, Lance Pittman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: The unilateral posterior crossbite with a functional shift is one of the most common early adolescent malocclusions. It is caused by a transversely deficient maxilla, relative to the mandible, and results when the mandible shifts to one side to so the teeth can maximally interdigitate. This shift is thought to cause the contralateral condyle to move anteriorly, inferiorly, and medially within the TMJ. Much attention has been given recently to the affects of this functional shift on the condyles. An attempt is being made to determine if pathological position of the condyles can cause condylar signs or symptoms similar …

Local And Regional Controls Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Metapopulation Dynamics Within A Complex Appalachian Riverscape, Brock Miles Huntsman
Local And Regional Controls Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Metapopulation Dynamics Within A Complex Appalachian Riverscape, Brock Miles Huntsman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Brook trout have recently become a species of conservation focus due to their unique spatial structure and restricted thermal requirements. These life history characteristics make brook trout particularly vulnerable to major biodiversity threats, such as climate change and habitat loss. For appropriate conservation actions to be taken, it is imperative to identify the scale that limits brook trout productivity. The popular view of brook trout ecology indicates that populations exist as isolated fragments within watersheds, where productivity is concentrated in small, cold tributaries. This has led to management resources being allocated towards small tributaries with a goal to enhance local …

Pharmacological Characterization Of Novel Opioid Receptor Ligands Aimed At Reducing The Development Of Tolerance, Jason Randall Healy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The three opioid receptor subtypes, mu (mu), delta (delta) and kappa (kappa) have long been associated with analgesia. Traditional opioid analgesics exert their effects through mu receptors located in the CNS. Recent studies suggest that the development of opioid analgesics displaying dual properties of mu agonism and delta antagonism could be of benefit by retaining potent analgesic properties while reducing the development of tolerance with chronic administration. UMB 425 displays high affinity at the mu receptor (K i = 3.2 +/- 0.14 nM), moderate affinity at the delta and kappa receptor. In vitro [35S]GTPgammaS functional assay results indicate that UMB …

Transatlantic Tales And Democratic Dreams: Archbishop Gaetano Bedini, Alessandro Gavazzi, And The Struggle To Define Republican Liberty In A Revolutionary Age, 1848-1854, Andrew Mach
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Catholic Archbishop Gaetano Bedini's 1853-1854 visit to the United States catalyzed a series of disturbances and debates over the limits of responsive government, free speech, and religious liberty. The Papal Nuncio's supporters and critics both drew on transatlantic tales and republican visions, casting the "Bedini Affair" as a subversive attack on ultramontane Catholic theology, embarrassing national spectacle, legitimate protest of an 1848 counterrevolutionary, or Protestant defense of exceptionalist ideals against papal "aggression" and conspiracy. The Know Nothing Party's emergence on the national political scene months after the Nuncio's visit obscured these competing narratives and ensured that nativist retellings became the …
