Confederate Borderland, Indian Homeland: Slavery, Sovereignty, And Suffering In Indian Territory, Zachery Christian Cowsert
Confederate Borderland, Indian Homeland: Slavery, Sovereignty, And Suffering In Indian Territory, Zachery Christian Cowsert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis explores the American Civil War in Indian Territory, focusing on how clashing visions of sovereignty within the Five Tribes---Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole---led to the one the most violent and relatively unknown chapters of the Civil War. Particular attention is paid to the first two years of the war, highlighting why the Five Tribes allied with Confederacy, and why those alliances failed over time. Chapter One examines Indian Territory as a borderland, unveiling how various actors within that borderland, including missionaries, Indian agents, white neighbors in Arkansas and Texas, and Indians themselves shaped Native American decision-making and …
Modeling Migration And Citizen-Science Data To Estimate Golden Eagle Abundance In Eastern North America, Andrew J. Dennhardt
Modeling Migration And Citizen-Science Data To Estimate Golden Eagle Abundance In Eastern North America, Andrew J. Dennhardt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Understanding animal movements is fundamental to ecology and conservation, yet direct measurement of movements of birds is both challenging and costly. Raptor populations are especially difficult to monitor, but movement models can provide information toward this goal. The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos canadensis) in eastern North America is a species of regional conservation concern, and little is known about its population ecology, movements, or behavior. Because of their rarity and role as apex predators, improving monitoring of this small population is of great importance. Similar to using movement models to help improve monitoring, developing new methods to estimate the size …

Non-Intrusive Anomaly Detection For Encrypted Networks, Luis C. Armendariz Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The use of encryption is steadily increasing. Packet payloads that are encrypted are becoming increasingly difficult to analyze using IDSs. This investigation uses a new non-intrusive IDS approach to detect network intrusions using a K-Means clustering methodology. It was found that this approach was able to detect many intrusions for these datasets while maintaining the encrypted confidentiality of packet information. This work utilized the KDD '99 and NSL-KDD evaluation datasets for testing.
Poroelastic Effect On Gas Transport And Storage In Organic Rich Shale Reservoir, Bahiya Jabbar
Poroelastic Effect On Gas Transport And Storage In Organic Rich Shale Reservoir, Bahiya Jabbar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study sheds the light on the effect of poroelastic properties of the shale matrix on storage and transportation mechanism in multi-scale organic rich shale gas reservoirs. Over last decades shale gas research widen significantly, however, the behavior and properties of shale formation still need more investigation. Most of our knowledge regarding poroelsctic behavior of shale matrix comes from studies on coalbed methane reservoirs, which is somewhat similar to shale gas reservoirs. The poroelastic effect of coal and shale is a strong function of total organic content (TOC) of these sedimentary rocks. Coalbed methane reservoirs have more than 50% TOC, …

Parents' Value Of Play In Early Childhood: A Comparative Study Of Spousal Play Beliefs, Meghan C. Devito
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Play is a vital tool for developmental growth and learning in early childhood. However, with the current focus on academics, there is less emphasis placed on encouraging children to play. The current study investigated parental beliefs on play. The sample consisted of 34 middle-class couples (34 mothers, 34 fathers) co-parenting a preschool-aged child (3-5 years) attending the laboratory school of a large mid-Atlantic university. Participants were surveyed about their beliefs on play. Results revealed mothers' value of play to be higher than fathers'. Although significantly different, both mothers and fathers perceived play positively. The findings suggest that early childhood professionals …
Military Versus Civilian Murder-Suicide Psychological Profiles, Christina Patton
Military Versus Civilian Murder-Suicide Psychological Profiles, Christina Patton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous studies have implicated dramatic differences between military members and civilians with regard to violent behavior, including suicide, domestic violence, and harm to others, but none have examined military murder-suicide. This study compared military and civilian murder-suicide perpetrators on a number of demographic, psychological, and contextual factors. Military murder-suicide perpetrators were more likely to be older, suffer physical health disparities, be currently or formerly married, and less likely to abuse substances. They were also more likely than civilians to complete a murder-suicide due to a motive of depression, rather than one of jealousy or anger related to relationship dissolution. Logistic …

Presidential Rhetoric In Times Of Crisis: A Textual Analysis Of Speeches By Franklin Roosevelt And Ronald Reagan, Samantha D. Cart
Presidential Rhetoric In Times Of Crisis: A Textual Analysis Of Speeches By Franklin Roosevelt And Ronald Reagan, Samantha D. Cart
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While many scholars have examined the rhetoric of presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan individually, there is a gap in literature concerning crisis rhetoric specifically and little has been done in the way of comparing these two men. This study is a textual analysis of six speeches given by Roosevelt and Reagan during times of crises. Because both presidents were important in defining an era and considered great communicators, this study compares the similarities and differences of their use of presidential crisis rhetoric. Previous research shows clear patterns in presidential rhetoric, including the common use of civil religious words and …
Investigation Of Pm Formation And Evolution In Plumes Emitted By Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles: Wind Tunnel Study, Daniele Littera
Investigation Of Pm Formation And Evolution In Plumes Emitted By Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles: Wind Tunnel Study, Daniele Littera
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stringent emission regulations have forced drastic technological improvements in diesel aftertreatment systems, particularly in reducing Particulate Matter (PM) emissions. Studies that have led to these technological advancements were made in controlled laboratory environments and are not representative of real-world emissions from these engines or vehicles. In addition, formation and evolution of PM from these engines are extremely sensitive to overall changes in the dilution process. In light of this, the study of the exhaust plume of a heavy-duty diesel vehicle operated inside a subsonic environmental wind tunnel can give us an idea of the dilution process and the representative emissions …
Analysis And Interpretation Of Complex Biological Signal Transduction Networks, Holly N. Currie
Analysis And Interpretation Of Complex Biological Signal Transduction Networks, Holly N. Currie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cellular signaling is a complex system of biological communication that coordinates cellular activities via biochemical reactions. The passing of an extracellular signal across a cell membrane to intracellular signaling molecules is referred to as signal transduction. Signals transduced across a cell's membrane influence its function, and allow the cell to respond to its local environment. Within the cell, proteins are key responders to, and carriers of, the transduced signal. A class of proteins called kinases mediate most of the signal transduction in eukaryotic cells by catalyzing the phosphorylation of substrate proteins. The post-translational modification of proteins by phosphorylation regulates protein …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
When Marcel Breuer accepted the commission to design the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, West Virginia in 1973, he saw the opportunity to create a public space for the citizens of Clarksburg, where individuals could become one community and would feel at home. The library building was intended to fulfill the hope of the city board to bring social and cultural welfare to the citizens of Clarksburg.;My hypothesis is that Marcel Breuer created a unique and intimate public library in West Virginia by integrating his characteristically domestic design elements in a public library. This thesis will demonstrate the domestic nature of the …
Post Fatigue Changes In The Stability Of Cervical Spine, Majed M. Zreiqat
Post Fatigue Changes In The Stability Of Cervical Spine, Majed M. Zreiqat
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) of the neck or cervical spine are a common problem in the modern workforce. An annual prevalence of 30% to 50% for neck pain among the general adult population was reported by the Task Force of Bone and Joint Decade on Neck Pain. Physical work demands, such as sustained static postures, sub-maximal repetitive arm exertions, and forceful arm exertions are consistently identified as possible risk factors for cervical spine MSDs. Most of these exertions induce neck muscle fatigue which may affect the stability of the cervical spine. A less stable spine can be both a cause and …

Addressing The Elephant In The Room: A Descriptive Analysis Of Weight-Based Harassment On College Campuses, Lynnsie Doty
Addressing The Elephant In The Room: A Descriptive Analysis Of Weight-Based Harassment On College Campuses, Lynnsie Doty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to the bullying and harassment literature, over 50 percent of adolescents reported that they were targets of harassment at least once a month. A major gap within this literature is that most of these studies focus predominantly on adolescents and none focuses on older cohorts. To date only five studies have focused on college populations, but none focus on weight specifically as a factor. Although many individuals may disagree, weight-based harassment is comparable to harassment based on race and sexual orientation and affects victims just as negatively. Therefore, it is time to address the elephant in the room and …
An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio
An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historically nurses have been strongly engaged in the political process, however in recent decades the profession has moved away from the policy arena. Without political engagement, issues that are important to the nursing profession are not addressed timely, if at all. One such issue is that of full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Well over 100 studies have been completed over the past 40 years showing the safe and quality care APRNs provide independently. Numerous well-respected, non-nursing organizations support the removal of state laws that impede the ability of APRNs to practice to the full extent of …

Quantifying The Limits Of Fingerprint Variability, Michael Fagert
Quantifying The Limits Of Fingerprint Variability, Michael Fagert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fingerprints are one of the most widely used identification features in both the biometric and forensic fields. However, the comparison and identification of fingerprints is made difficult by fingerprint variability arising from distortion. This study quantifies the limits of fingerprint variability when subject to heavy distortion, and the variability observed in repeated inked planar impressions. Fingers were video recorded performing several distortion conditions under heavy deposition pressure: left, right, up, and down translation of the finger, clockwise and counter-clockwise torque of the finger, and planar impressions. Fingerprint templates, containing `true' minutiae locations, were then created from 10 inked planar impressions …

Stability Of Methane-Ethane-Propane Mixed Gas Hydrates Under Deep Water Conditions, Srinath Chowdary Velaga
Stability Of Methane-Ethane-Propane Mixed Gas Hydrates Under Deep Water Conditions, Srinath Chowdary Velaga
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Methane hydrates are globally distributed in sediments along the continental margins and potentially contain more energy than all fossil fuel reserves. However, methane is also a potential greenhouse gas which could play a major role in global climate change. Understanding the stability of gas hydrates can help us to understand their role in the climate change. Three main factors affect the stability of hydrates: Temperature (T), Pressure (P) and composition. Hydrates become unstable when they are exposed to pressures and temperatures outside the hydrate stability zone (HSZ) in a process commonly called dissociation. However, hydrates can also become unstable even …
Three Essays On Institutions And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Amanda M. Mandzik
Three Essays On Institutions And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Amanda M. Mandzik
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As a region, sub-Saharan Africa lags behind the rest of the world in both human development and economic growth. However, a portion of the development literature suggests that institutions may play a role in explaining, and perhaps changing, the outcomes that are observed in these countries. Therefore, this dissertation explores how institutions have shaped and continue to shape the health and economic outcomes of this region. In Chapter 2, jointly with Andrew Young, we seek to explain the correlation between high HIV prevalence rates and the Christian share of the population that contrasts with low HIV prevalence rates observed with …

Essays On Industrial Agglomeration And Input-Output Linkages, Zheng Tian
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Industrial agglomeration is an important subject in the field of regional economics. It is an economic phenomenon with two dimensions---space and industry. These two dimensions call for research that can take both spatial and industry factors into consideration regarding industrial agglomeration. Despite the advance of economic theories on agglomeration, empirical studies that satisfactorily incorporate spatial and industrial dimensions are very few. My research aims to enrich the existing methodology for empirical studies by combining spatial econometrics and the input-output model to investigate the effects of input-output linkages on industrial agglomeration.;In this research I propose two methods to integrate spatial econometrics …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The role domestic organized interest groups play in political affairs has drastically changed in a very short time period, yet the subject has been basically ignored by academia. This study investigates the motivation, strategies, and tactics of domestic organizations that seek lobbying targets outside the domestic political arena. Interest groups in the United States and Canada were selected from three distant policy areas: environmental policy, reproductive policy, and agriculture policy.;By investigating the motives, strategies, and tactics domestic organizations use beyond the domestic political environment, this research has added to our knowledge of interest group behavior. Research on the transnational activities …
Police Officers Talking About Gun Control: A Case Study Of A Rural Sheriff's Department, Angela Sycafoose
Police Officers Talking About Gun Control: A Case Study Of A Rural Sheriff's Department, Angela Sycafoose
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research examines how members of a rural police department view gun control, and the degree to which they think that gun control laws protect police officers and the public. Drawing on conclusions from interviews with twenty police officers within one local sheriff's department, three themes emerged: 1) the officers rejected gun control laws and deemed them ineffective for controlling criminal behavior; 2) the officers showed support for specific gun control measures such as, citizens obtaining concealed carry permits and expanding gun background checks; 3) the officers deemed guns to be an essential part of rural upbringing and identity. We …

All samples were analyzed for selected major and minor geochemistry, as well as stable isotopes of delta2HH2O, delta18OH2O, delta13CDIC, delta18OSO4 and delta34SSO4. The geochemical and isotopic characteristics of the 50 water samples collected show no clustering based on production category. Extremely high concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) are characteristic of produced water from Marcellus Shale production. All …
Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange Studies By Mass Spectrometry: A Method For Obtaining Conformational Structures Of Proteins In Solution, Teerapat Rojsajjakul
Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange Studies By Mass Spectrometry: A Method For Obtaining Conformational Structures Of Proteins In Solution, Teerapat Rojsajjakul
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX) coupled with electrospray ionization (ESI) in mass spectrometry (MS) has become an important method in the study of protein structure and dynamics. It provides an opportunity for obtaining conformational structures of protein motions in physiological conditions and offers unparalleled limits of detection. This method relies on the fact that the accessibility of exchangeable amide hydrogens of a protein to D2O induces H/D isotopic exchange. The exchangeable amide hydrogens that lack hydrogen bonding when exposed to solvent are exchanged rapidly. Protected amide hydrogens from tightly folded elements and have hydrogen bonding exchange slow and can be detected by …
