Evaluating The Performance Of A Large-Scale Facial Image Dataset Using Agglomerated Match Score Statistics, Mounica Kamireddy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Biometrics systems are experiencing wide-spread usage in identification and access control applications. To estimate the performance of any biometric systems, their characteristics need to be analyzed to make concrete conclusions for real time usage. Performance testing of hardware or software components of either custom or state-of-the-art commercial biometric systems is typically carried out on large datasets. Several public and private datasets are used in current biometric research. West Virginia University has completed several large scale multimodal biometric data collection with an aim to create research datasets that can be used by disciplines concerning secured biometric applications. However, the demographic and …
Real-Time Monitoring And Prediction Of The Pilot Vehicle System (Pvs) Closed-Loop Stability, Tanmay Kumar Mandal
Real-Time Monitoring And Prediction Of The Pilot Vehicle System (Pvs) Closed-Loop Stability, Tanmay Kumar Mandal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Understanding human control behavior is an important step for improving the safety of future aircraft. Considerable resources are invested during the design phase of an aircraft to ensure that the aircraft has desirable handling qualities. However, human pilots exhibit a wide range of control behaviors that are a function of external stimulus, aircraft dynamics, and human psychological properties (such as workload, stress factor, confidence, and sense of urgency factor). This variability is difficult to address comprehensively during the design phase and may lead to undesirable pilot--aircraft interaction, such as pilot-induced oscillations (PIO). This creates the need to keep track of …

To explore Dalit narratives, I conducted fieldwork in Kerala using in-depth interviews, photovoice, and participant observation as primary data. I coupled my primary data with secondary data sources such as development reports, trend data and newspapers to document how Dalit needs are framed. This research uses postcolonial feminist theory as it applies to the …
An Energy-Efficient Reconfigurable Mobile Memory Interface For Computing Systems, Majid Jalali Far
An Energy-Efficient Reconfigurable Mobile Memory Interface For Computing Systems, Majid Jalali Far
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The critical need for higher power efficiency and bandwidth transceiver design has significantly increased as mobile devices, such as smart phones, laptops, tablets, and ultra-portable personal digital assistants continue to be constructed using heterogeneous intellectual properties such as central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), digital signal processors, dynamic random-access memories (DRAMs), sensors, and graphics/image processing units and to have enhanced graphic computing and video processing capabilities. However, the current mobile interface technologies which support CPU to memory communication (e.g. baseband-only signaling) have critical limitations, particularly super-linear energy consumption, limited bandwidth, and non-reconfigurable data access. As a consequence, there …

Influence Of The Gondwanide Magmatic Arc And Cape Fold Belt On The Karoo Basin - South Africa, Clyde Pitt Findlay Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Permian Ecca Group in South Africa preserves a thick succession of clastic basin fill, including mud-rich turbidite sequences and hemipelagic mudstone units. Provenance of mud influx into the basin is an important constraint for understanding the tectonic processes influencing regional basin development and distribution of organic-rich Lower Ecca Group mudstone and subsequent depositional style of the Upper Ecca Group turbidite systems. In this study, we interpret the Ecca Group mudstones were sourced by the Cape Fold Belt and Gondwanide Magmatic Arc based on geochemistry and mineralogy of 38 mudstone samples. Muscovite and high quartz content (average 32.9%) indicate metamorphic …
Phenotypic And Genotypic Characterization Of Lumbosacral Stenosis In Labrador Retrievers, Meenakshi Mukherjee
Phenotypic And Genotypic Characterization Of Lumbosacral Stenosis In Labrador Retrievers, Meenakshi Mukherjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lumbosacral stenosis (LS) is a structural narrowing of the spinal canal in the canine lumbosacral spine. Large-sized working and sporting dog breeds such as Labrador retrievers are predisposed for reasons that are incompletely understood. Early diagnosis is essential for maximizing the quality of life, and minimizing the likelihood of early retirement in working dogs. Lumbosacral stenosis is usually considered to be a condition associated with degenerative changes observed with normal aging, however presence of the disease in young and middle aged working dogs has also been reported. This leads to the probable theory that some dogs in large breeds like …
Spectacular Struggles: Utopian Whiteness, Black Resistance, And The National Imaginary In Nineteenth-Century America, Courtney L. Novosat
Spectacular Struggles: Utopian Whiteness, Black Resistance, And The National Imaginary In Nineteenth-Century America, Courtney L. Novosat
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Through an analysis of the popularity, didacticism, and rhetoric of literary utopias and world's fairs, Spectacular Struggles argues that during the latter half of the nineteenth century our national narrative makes use of an inherently and uncritically white utopian form to forge an exclusionary, white national identity as an anxious response to a tumultuous era of social change. The first chapter traces the origins of this "white (male) utopian complex" from More's sui generis Utopia to the white utopian frameworks governing our self-representation at the fair, national narratives, and even our histories. From this grounding, I turn to Edgar Allen …
Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy Of Gaas Excitons And Quantum Microcavity Polaritons, Brian L. Wilmer
Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy Of Gaas Excitons And Quantum Microcavity Polaritons, Brian L. Wilmer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Light-matter interactions associated with excitons and exciton related complexes are explored in bulk GaAs and semiconductor microcavities using multidimensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS). This approach provides rich spectra determining quantum excitation pathways, structural influences on the excitons, and coherence times.;Polarization, excitation density, and temperature-dependent MDCS is performed on excitons in strained bulk GaAs layers, probing the coherent response for differing amounts of strain. Biaxial tensile strain lifts the degeneracy of heavy-hole and light-hole valence states, leading to an observed splitting of the associated excitons at low temperature. Increasing the strain increases the magnitude of the heavy-/light- hole exciton peak splitting, induces …
Climate Change, Capitalism, And Citizen Science: Developing A Dialectical Framework For Examining Volunteer Participation In Climate Change Research, Joshua A. Wixom
Climate Change, Capitalism, And Citizen Science: Developing A Dialectical Framework For Examining Volunteer Participation In Climate Change Research, Joshua A. Wixom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation discusses the complex social relations that link citizen science, scientific literacy, and the dissemination of information to the public. Scientific information is not produced in value-neutral settings by people removed from their social context. Instead, science is a social pursuit and the scientist's social context is embedded in the knowledge produced. Additionally, the dissemination of this information via numerous media outlets is filtered through institutional lenses and subject to journalistic norms. As a result, the general public must be able to recognize the inherent biases in this information. Yet, the rates of scientific literacy in the U.S. are …

A Description Of The Sound System Of Misiones Mbya, Matias N. De Paula
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Misiones Mbya is an indigenous language of South America spoken by the Mbya people in the Province of Misiones, Argentina. Although there are several studies in the literature about the Brazilian variety of this language, the linguistic information available about Misiones Mbya is extremely scarce. In this thesis I present a segmental analysis of the language (individual vowels and consonants) and a prosodic analysis of nasal harmony based on field data collected in three different communities in Misiones. The segmental analysis shows that this variety is very similar to the Brazilian variety of the language with only a few exceptions. …

Sleep Patterns And Associated Factors In Children And Adolescents With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Margo M. Szabo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Youth with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may be at increased risk for sleep difficulties due to the inflammatory nature of their disease. Moreover, previous research has demonstrated that children and adolescents with IBD experience impairment across a variety of psychosocial domains. However, the current literature has yet to examine the complex interplay between sleep, disease-related symptoms, and psychosocial factors such as mood and health-related quality of life in youth with both types of IBD (i.e., Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine sleep patterns and associated factors, including pain, disease activity, mood, and …
Development Of Real-Time Optimal Control Strategy Of Hybrid Transit Bus Based On Predicted Driving Pattern, Wei Qi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The control strategy of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has been an active research area in the past decades. The main goal of the optimal control strategy is to maximize the fuel economy and minimize exhaust emissions while also satisfying the expected vehicle performance. Dynamic programming (DP) is an algorithm capable of finding the global optimal solution of HEV operation. However, DP cannot be used as a real-time control approach as it requires pre-known driving information. The equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is a real-time control approach, but it always results in local optima due to the non-convex cost function. …

Driver drowsiness has always been a major concern for researchers and road use administrators. It has led to countless deaths accounting to significant percentile of deaths world over. Researchers have attempted to determine driver drowsiness using the following measures: (1) subjective measures (2) vehicle-based measures; (3) behavioral measures and (4) physiological measures.;Studies carried out to assess the efficacy of all the four measures, have brought out significant weaknesses in each of these measures. However detailed and comprehensive review has indicated that Physiological Measure namely EEG signal analysis provides most reliable and accurate information on driver drowsiness. In this paper a …
Apical Canal Transportation After Instrumentation With Two New Rotary Files; A Comparative Study With Micro Ct, Wisam Sakr
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction.;Excessive dentin removal in a single direction within the canal causes canal transportation. A study by Peters OA has shown that the canal transportation is highest apically. A number of cleaning and shaping principles have been previously suggested and should be followed to achieve optimum results. These principles include the developing of a continuously tapering funnel from the coronal access cavity to the root apex, following the original canal shape and maintaining the apical foramen in its original spatial relationship both to the periapical tissues and to the root surface. The aim of this study is to construct detailed three-dimensional …
The Biased Bystander: How Homophobia Affects Intervention In Physical Fights, R. Kyle Saunders
The Biased Bystander: How Homophobia Affects Intervention In Physical Fights, R. Kyle Saunders
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sociologists, criminologists and psychologists have offered a number of theories to understand bystander intervention in emergency situations in general. Most notably, the bystander effect argues that as the number of bystanders to an incident increases, the less likely someone is to intervene. However, the likelihood of intervention could also be dependent on the personal biases of the observers. A bystander's contempt or dislike for particular victims (homosexuals, minorities, women, etc.) may influence his or her willingness to intervene. This research explores, through the use of vignette experiments, the extent to which a bystander's homophobia influences their willingness to intervene on …

I use the Spatial Durbin Model to estimate the effects of HIPC affiliation on neighboring countries. …
Chebyshev Polynomials And Fibonacci Numbers, Nurul Wahyuni
Chebyshev Polynomials And Fibonacci Numbers, Nurul Wahyuni
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Chebyshev polynomials arise in several mathematical contexts such as approximation theory, numerical integration, and differential equations. Here we study a combinatorial interpretation of Chebyshev polynomials due to Shapiro, and we use it to give a slight variation of a combinatorial proof of Binet's Formula due to Benjamin, Derks and Quinn. Another beautiful formula for the Fibonacci numbers involves complex roots of unity. Presently, no combinatorial proof is known. We give combinatorial proofs of some related identities as progress toward a full combinatorial proof.
Identification And Functional Predication Of Long Non-Coding Rnas In Rainbow Trout And Cattle, Jian Wang
Identification And Functional Predication Of Long Non-Coding Rnas In Rainbow Trout And Cattle, Jian Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The simplest definition of a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is an RNA transcript larger than 200 nucleotides that does not encode for a functional protein product. This definition distinguishes lncRNAs from small regulatory RNAs such as microRNAs (miRNAs), short interfering RNAs (siRNAs), Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) and other short RNAs. They have emerged as a new class of regulatory transcripts in recent years. Recent advances in sequencing technologies have opened a new horizon for the identification and annotation of this class of RNAs in many species. With the increasing evidence supporting important roles of lincRNAs in diverse processes, a systematic catalog …

Board Out Of Your Mind: Mapping Players' Mental Models Of Game Systems And Potentials For Systems-Thinking Instruction, Joe A. Wasserman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite evidence that game-based instruction is effective, and suggestive evidence that they are specifically effective for teaching systems thinking---the ability to think about complex systems---the mechanisms behind this learning are not well understood. One promising perspective on game-based learning is rooted in the development of mental models of game systems. Mental models are cognitive representations of the perceived entities and relationships between entities in a system. This study explores the entities and entity relationships in novice players' mental models of an analog game. Grounded, interpretive analysis of mental models externalized through cognitive mapping identified five categories of entities: formal game …
Utilization Risk Assessment And Thermal Conductivity Testing For The Low Temperature Geothermal Play Fairway Analysis For The Appalachian Basin, Kelydra Welcker
Utilization Risk Assessment And Thermal Conductivity Testing For The Low Temperature Geothermal Play Fairway Analysis For The Appalachian Basin, Kelydra Welcker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In order to alleviate the large carbon footprint of fossil fuel technology, renewable energy has begun to gain momentum with consumers and industries alike. Geothermal energy has the benefit of providing a reliable energy source with only 5% of the carbon dioxide emissions of fossil fuels, as well as provide a means of carbon sequestration. The application for this energy source is highly dependent on several factors, including reservoir characteristics, temperature, and regional demand. High temperature systems (>150 °C) are best suited for electricity production, while low and medium temperature reservoirs (<90 °C and 90-150 °C, respectively) may be better suited for direct use applications, such as manufacturing purposes or district heating and cooling for commercial and residential areas.;Enhanced, or engineered, geothermal systems (EGS) may provide a means to take advantage of geothermal reservoirs with lower available temperatures. To determine the efficacy of EGS technology in eastern United States, a play fairway analysis was performed on the Appalachian basin. Risk factors examined include thermal resource quality, natural reservoir quality, induced seismicity, and utilization opportunities, which is a focus of this work. Levelized cost of heat, or LCOH, was used to provide a comparison of factors, such as combination of capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, and performance and fuel costs. To determine LCOH, commercial, residential, and infrastructure data were collected from the US Census and fed into GEOPHIRES, a program that uses surface piping, heat exchange equipment (residential and/or commercial), operations, upfront capital cost, and maintenance costs over the lifetime of a 30-year project. The impact of industrial demand on LCOH, such as process heating and cooling and HVAC, for dairy, wood drying, and paper mills were also examined.;Heat flow estimates are equally important in the selection of potential geothermal sites. Estimation of the temperature-at-depth uses heat flow, which is dependent on factors including geothermal gradient and thermal conductivities. Thermal conductivity is a function of depth and position, and for some models is calculated as a weighted average based on thicknesses of lithographic layers. Obtaining actual thermal conductivities can be challenging, and often require the use of databases to predict the geographic variation. For this project, thermal conductivities from Marion County well #244 rock cuttings were found using a portable electronic divided bar (PEDB) system and were compared to COSUNA estimates to assess the current model method.

Nursing Knowledge Of Heart Failure, Beth Ann White
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Heart failure is a constellation of signs and symptoms reflecting a physiologic change in the hearts ability to keep up with demand. Heart failure is considered a global pandemic and is a complex disease that oftentimes is progressive. Heart failure is often associated with underlying coronary atherosclerosis, and its associated risks, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and dyslipidemia. To slow the progression and improve quality of life patients should be educated about the disease and in most health care settings nurses provide this education. However, nurses may lack sufficient knowledge of the processes that lead to heart failure. The …
Mineral Asset Valuation Under Economic Uncertainty: A Complex System For Operational Flexibility, Marcell B. B. Silveira
Mineral Asset Valuation Under Economic Uncertainty: A Complex System For Operational Flexibility, Marcell B. B. Silveira
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The global mineral industry faces constant challenges that are incited and intensified by market uncertainty. Demand constrictions, resource scarcity, and market volatility all generate market risk that is compounded by the high capital and long payback periods inherent to mining projects. Quantitative risk assessments provide a methodology to leverage uncertain economic scenarios and accurately assess profitability; however, current mine valuation techniques and engineering economic approaches tend to scrutinize the uncertainty of technical factors, such as ore grade and metallurgical recovery, to a much greater degree than market factors, like price-demand restrictions. Nevertheless, the optimal operating conditions for mining, mineral processing …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although eating disorders and related interventions have been heavily researched, less is known about potentially protective variables, including self-compassion, mindfulness, and emotion regulation. It is important to understand these constructs and their relationship to eating disorder symptoms because such factors may prevent these disorders in at-risk individuals and aid in more successful psychotherapeutic outcomes. Independent theories related to these variables and their relationship to disordered eating have been postulated, but not yet combined into a single model. In this study, 100 university students completed self-report surveys that were analyzed using a Path Analysis (PA) method. This method tested an integrated …
