Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Research on the health status of United States' youths has shown that the main adolescent health threats result from behavioral choices (health risk behaviors) that place boys and girls at risk for leading causes of morbidity and mortality. The aims of this study were to examine the co-occurrence of health risk behaviors and determine patterns of the co-occurrence of risk behaviors that may differ based on sex (aim 1); the association of health risk behaviors with weight status (aim 2); and the association of tobacco use, poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, and sedentary behavior among adolescents using nationally representative …
Analysis Of Curved Composite Beam, Manish Aggarwal
Analysis Of Curved Composite Beam, Manish Aggarwal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Composite materials are steadily replacing traditional materials in many engineering applications due to several benefits such as high strength to weight ratio and the ability to tailor the material for specific purposes. Over the last several decades the analysis of straight beams has received considerable attention while there is very little focus on curved composite beams.;In the present study, the formulation of the bending of a curved composite beam is based on the bending theory of thick shells. A variational formulation is employed to derive the governing equations. A consistent methodology is applied to reduce the two-dimensional nature of the …

Conditioning The Estimating Ultimate Recovery Of Shale Wells To Reservoir And Completion Parameters, Maher Jasim Alabboodi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the last years, gas production from shale has increased significantly in the United States. Therefore, many studies have been focused on shale formation in different areas such as fracturing, reservoir simulation, forecasting and so on. Forecasting production or estimating ultimate recovery (EUR) is considered to be one of the most important items in the production development planning. The certainty in EUR calculation is questionable because there are different parameters that impact production and consequently the EUR such as rock properties and well completion design.;Different methods to calculate EUR have been used in the industry. Traditionally, the decline curve analysis …

Impact Of Nanoscale Pore Sizes On The Flow Of Gas Mixtures In Marcellus Shale Reservoir, Noor Mazher Alfashkhi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pore proximity effect in shale reservoirs, unlike the conventional reservoirs, is very significant because the shale matrix contains pores in the range of nano meter that impact the phase behavior and fluid properties of the gas mixtures. The changes to the critical properties of the natural gas impacts the storage and flow in shale matrix. For optimization of gas extraction, understanding the gas properties is of great research interest.;In this research the impact of confinement on the gas viscosity and compressibility factor were evaluated using two typical composition of Marcellus shale gas. The results are to be used in formulating …
Rna-Protein Interaction Prediction: String-Based Versus Feature-Based Models, Maen Allaga
Rna-Protein Interaction Prediction: String-Based Versus Feature-Based Models, Maen Allaga
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cellular processes are significantly influenced by the interactions between different RNAs and proteins within cells. This interaction is crucial in understanding gene expressions and gene regulations, and their role in various diseases. Empirical and experimental methods to study this interaction are hampered by the high cost and combinatorial nature of the problem. Consequently, computer science and machine learning methods were applied to predict the interaction between RNAs and proteins.;RNAs are sequences of nucleotides, while proteins are sequences of amino acids. The protein secondary structure describes how amino acids are positioned in three dimensional space. Early methods predicted the interaction between …
Grainyhead-Like 2 Reverses The Metabolic Changes Induced By The Oncogenic Epithelialmesenchymal Transition: Effects On Anoikis, Joshua C. Farris
Grainyhead-Like 2 Reverses The Metabolic Changes Induced By The Oncogenic Epithelialmesenchymal Transition: Effects On Anoikis, Joshua C. Farris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
When deprived of connections to their extracellular matrix, normal epithelial cells trigger a process of programmed cell death referred to as anoikis. The transcriptional reprogramming event known as Epithelial-Mesenchymal transition (EMT) confers anoikis resistance and ultimately, increased metastatic potential. Distant metastatic disease contributes to the majority of deaths occurring in many cancer types, especially those originating in breast tissue. The ability to metastasize depends critically upon a cancer cell's ability to evade anoikis. Heterogeneity of tumors containing anoikis, therapy resistant populations likely explains the tendency of disease to reappear in distant locations after a period of apparent remission. The wound …
Distributed Detection And Estimation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Fanaei
Distributed Detection And Estimation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Fanaei
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are typically formed by a large number of densely deployed, spatially distributed sensors with limited sensing, computing, and communication capabilities that cooperate with each other to achieve a common goal. In this dissertation, we investigate the problem of distributed detection, classification, estimation, and localization in WSNs. In this context, the sensors observe the conditions of their surrounding environment, locally process their noisy observations, and send the processed data to a central entity, known as the fusion center (FC), through parallel communication channels corrupted by fading and additive noise. The FC will then combine the received information …

Students in the blended learning environment, with a non-certified teacher, scored similarly to students …
Molecular Characterization Of Lhx8, An Oocyte-Specific Transcription Factor, And Its Interacting Proteins In Rainbow Trout And Cattle, Liyuan Fu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
LIM homeobox 8 (Lhx8) is an important transcription factor that is preferentially expressed in germ cells. Lhx8 null mice are infertile due to lack of oocytes and impairment of the transition from primordial follicles to primary follicles. Lhx8 deficiency also affects the expression of many important oocyte-specific genes. To date, no attempts have been made to investigate the existence of any cellular factors that might interact with Lhx8 protein in oocytes and early embryos. In this study, we report the characterization of rainbow trout and bovine Lhx8 genes and identification of important germ cell-specific nuclear factors that interact with Lhx8 …

Homeplace, Megan Leigh Gainer
Homeplace, Megan Leigh Gainer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The sculptural work presented in this thesis and the accompanying exhibition showcase the ideas of memory, its fallacy, and why certain objects become tied to the idea of a specific time, place, and culture. Using my own personal experiences growing up in rural West Virginia, I call upon traditional crafting techniques to relay a sense of nostalgia commonly found throughout Appalachia. The expression of the hand present throughout the work highlights the importance placed on these seemingly mundane objects, which hold a special place in my history.
Recovery Of The Regression Functions And Distributions In Some Incomplete Models, Broti Garai
Recovery Of The Regression Functions And Distributions In Some Incomplete Models, Broti Garai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this research, we propose formulas for recovering the regression function based on the product moments as well as recovering the distributions and derivative function in some indirect models. The upper bounds for the uniform rate of approximations are also derived. For regression functions two cases where the support of underlying functions is bounded and unbounded from above are studied. Based on the proposed approximations, new types of nonparametric estimates of the cumulative distribution, the density functions and the derivative functions in multiplicative-censoring model, as well as the approximations of conditional variance, are constructed. The suggested approach is also applied …

From Association To Function: Elucidating The Role Of G Protein Signaling Modulator 3 And Variants In Its Gene Locus In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bryan Jeffery Gall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that is estimated to affect 1% of Americans. RA causes significant morbidity as a result of autoimmune stimuli inducing pro-inflammatory leukocyte recruitment to the joint. Despite the large effect on quality of life and significant research into RA pathophysiology, there is still much that is not known about the etiology of RA. Although effective treatment options do exist for RA, many of them carry significant risks of compliance-limiting adverse effects, high costs, and a subset of patients do not respond to treatment. This work attempts to respond to the limitations of current therapeutics …

Delineating Compressional Structures Through Refined Geosteering Methods, Chad Koury
Delineating Compressional Structures Through Refined Geosteering Methods, Chad Koury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Horizontal gas development wells drilled in the Marcellus Formation in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania encountered tight fold structures, as detected through geosteering. However, compared to fold analogues in outcrop and in laboratory settings, the geosteering interpretations generated from existing methods depicted these sub-surface structures with varying accuracy. To more acutely determine the cross-sectional profile of these geologic structures, I developed a method whereby an algorithm is used to project and extrapolate the existing geosteering data into a valid 2-dimensional cross-section.;Using this new method, I have determined that Devonian strata in the Appalachian Basin has an overlying detachment in the Upper Marcellus …
Walking Out Of Step: U.S.-Israel Relations And The Peace Process, 1967-1975, Kenny Kolander
Walking Out Of Step: U.S.-Israel Relations And The Peace Process, 1967-1975, Kenny Kolander
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the development of U.S.-Israel relations during a crucial period---the Presidencies of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, 1968--76. This was a crucial period because U.S. aid to Israel skyrocketed during these years, especially military aid. Importantly, U.S.--Israel relations are examined not only through presidential policies, which other scholars have done, but also through congressional activity. Congress consistently pushed both Presidents to sell more and more weapons to Israel, which would allow the U.S. to project strength abroad during the Cold War---especially given the deteriorating situation in Vietnam---and create job opportunities at home during the hard economic times of …
A History Of Violence: British Colonial Policing In Ireland And The Palestine Mandate, Tyler Krahe
A History Of Violence: British Colonial Policing In Ireland And The Palestine Mandate, Tyler Krahe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
British colonial policing dramatically evolved between 1920 and 1948. This time period represents the duration of the Anglo-Irish War, as well as British control of the Palestine Mandate. It was during the period that the security forces at work within these areas grew to combat similar nationalist populations. During the Anglo-Irish War in 1919 the security forces in Ireland found themselves unable to quell the rebellion of Irish nationalists. To supplement their inadequate numbers the Royal Irish Constabulary took on and trained large numbers of World War I veterans who were in desperate need of work. These men came to …
Assessment Of Molecular Action Of Direct Gating And Allosteric Modulatory Effects Of Meprobamate (Miltownrtm) On Gaba A Receptors, Manish Kumar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Meprobamate (tradenames Miltown, Equanil) is a schedule IV anxiolytic and the primary metabolite of the muscle relaxant carisoprodol. Meprobamate modulates GABAA (gamma-aminobutyric acid type A) receptors, and has been described as having barbiturate-like activity. A thorough understanding of its mechanism remains ill-defined, however. To gain insight into its actions, we have conducted a series of studies using recombinant GABAA receptors. In alphaxbetazgamma2 GABAA receptors (where x = 1-6 and z = 1-3), the ability to enhance GABA-mediated current was evident for all alpha subunit isoforms, with the largest effect observed in alpha5-expressing receptors. Direct gating was comparable with all alpha …
Critical Analysis Of Longwall Ventilation Systems And Removal Of Methane, Robert B. Krog
Critical Analysis Of Longwall Ventilation Systems And Removal Of Methane, Robert B. Krog
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Bleeder systems are an important component for ventilation and the control of methane. The bleeder system of a coal mine contains a mixing zone for methane-laden air from the mined-out portions of the seam to mix with fresh air and the methane concentrations in the bleeders can often be elevated. Bleeders also provides a pathway for coalbed methane-laden ventilation air to quickly flow out of the mine through low resistance airways of a mine, such as supported gateroads, along the un-compacted outer perimeter of the gob, etc. Substantial quantities of coalbed methane are typically removed from underground workings. Although it …

Determining The Number Of Test Fires Needed To Represent The Variability Present Within A Firearm, Eric Law
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many studies have been performed in recent years in the field of firearm examination with the goal of providing an objective method for comparisons of fired cartridge cases. To date there has been no research to support the number of test fires needed to represent the variability present within a firearm. When a suspect firearm is submitted to a firearm examiner, test fires are performed to collect fired cartridge cases for comparison purposes. Typically, two to four test fires are performed for every firearm. The recovered cartridge cases are compared to each other to determine which characteristics from the firearm …
An Analysis Of Student Approaches To Solving Optimization Problems In First Semester Calculus, Renee Larue
An Analysis Of Student Approaches To Solving Optimization Problems In First Semester Calculus, Renee Larue
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how students think about and understand optimization problems in first semester calculus. To solve an optimization problem, one must identify the quantity to be maximized or minimized and then construct an optimizing function modeling the scenario described in the problem, particularly paying attention to how the desired quantity varies under the given constraint. Once this optimizing function has been constructed, the problem solver uses calculus and algebra skills to analytically find the absolute maximum or minimum of the function in the realistic domain of the problem. These problems are notoriously difficult for …

Attrition In Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Brittany K. Liebsack
Attrition In Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Brittany K. Liebsack
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Attrition is a significant problem in child psychotherapy (De Haan, Boon, De Jong, Hoeve, & Vermeiren, 2013) and has serious implications. These include limited effectiveness of interventions for mental and behavioral health problems and decreases in staff productivity, access to services, and the number of people an agency can serve (Barrett et al., 2008). Predictors of attrition include those at the client, family, therapist, and treatment levels. The current study investigated the pattern of and variables associated with attrition in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based parent training program for families with young children (ages 2.5- to 7-years-old) with disruptive …
Covariance Expressions For Eigenvalue And Eigenvector Problems, Andrew J. Liounis
Covariance Expressions For Eigenvalue And Eigenvector Problems, Andrew J. Liounis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There are a number of important scientific and engineering problems whose solutions take the form of an eigenvalue--eigenvector problem. Some notable examples include solutions to linear systems of ordinary differential equations, controllability of linear systems, finite element analysis, chemical kinetics, fitting ellipses to noisy data, and optimal estimation of attitude from unit vectors. In many of these problems, having knowledge of the eigenvalue and eigenvector Jacobians is either necessary or is nearly as important as having the solution itself. For instance, Jacobians are necessary to find the uncertainty in a computed eigenvalue or eigenvector estimate. This uncertainty, which is usually …

The goal of this work is to help synthesize a sensor network to detect and diagnose faults and to monitor conditions of the key equipment items. The desired algorithm for sensor network design would provide information about the number, type and location of sensors that should be deployed for fault diagnosis and condition monitoring of a plant. In this work, the focus was on the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant where the faults at the equipment level and the plant level are considered separately. At the plant level, the objective is to observe whether a fault has occurred …
Role For Protein Prenylation And "Caax" Processing In Photoreceptor Neurons, Nachiket D. Pendse
Role For Protein Prenylation And "Caax" Processing In Photoreceptor Neurons, Nachiket D. Pendse
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The efficient folding, assembly and trafficking of phototransduction proteins from site of synthesis in the inner segment (IS) to the site of action in the outer segment (OS) is crucial for photoreceptor cell survival and function. Defects in this process are known to cause blinding diseases in humans including retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and Leber's congenital amaurosis (LCA). The lack of a therapeutic approach for treatment of various retinal degenerations is likely due a knowledge gap in the mechanisms underlying the folding, assembly and transport of prenylated phototransduction proteins. Prenylation and " CAAX" processing is thought to be involved not only …
