Storage Capacity Estimation Of Commercial Scale Injection And Storage Of Co2 In The Jacksonburg-Stringtown Oil Field, West Virginia, Zhi Zhong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Geological capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) of carbon dioxide (CO2) in depleted oil and gas reservoirs is one method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and extending the life of the field. Therefore CCUS coupled with EOR is considered to be an economic approach to demonstration of commercial-scale injection and storage of anthropogenic CO2. Several critical issues should be taken into account prior to injecting large volumes of CO2, such as storage capacity, project duration and long-term containment. Reservoir characterization and 3D geological modeling are the best way to estimate the theoretical CO 2 storage capacity …
A Strain Theory Of Prosocial Behavior, Mallory Slusser
A Strain Theory Of Prosocial Behavior, Mallory Slusser
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Agnew's General Strain Theory proposes that strain leads to negative emotions, which in turn lead to crime and delinquency. However, there has been a lack of research on what happens when the negative emotions that result from externally experienced strains lead to responses other than crime. The psychology literature on "feeling bad, doing good" indicates that internally experienced negative emotions can lead to helping behaviors. The purpose of this research is to examine if externally generated negative emotions can also lead to helping or prosocial behaviors. Particular attention is given to the type of negative emotion that is experienced -- …
Subspace Representations And Learning For Visual Recognition, Farzad Siyahjani
Subspace Representations And Learning For Visual Recognition, Farzad Siyahjani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pervasive and affordable sensor and storage technology enables the acquisition of an ever-rising amount of visual data. The ability to extract semantic information by interpreting, indexing and searching visual data is impacting domains such as surveillance, robotics, intelligence, human- computer interaction, navigation, healthcare, and several others. This further stimulates the investigation of automated extraction techniques that are more efficient, and robust against the many sources of noise affecting the already complex visual data, which is carrying the semantic information of interest. We address the problem by designing novel visual data representations, based on learning data subspace decompositions that are invariant …
Early Feeding Experiences Of Families Whose Children Were Born With Cleft Lip Andor Palate: A Rural Perspective, Meghan Snyder
Early Feeding Experiences Of Families Whose Children Were Born With Cleft Lip Andor Palate: A Rural Perspective, Meghan Snyder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An initial problem frequently found in children born with cleft palate is difficulty feeding. This problem can be magnified in rural areas where healthcare resources are limited. A 29-item questionnaire was developed and administered to 24 families whose children were born with a cleft palate. Many parents experienced difficulties in both instruction and in feeding their children. It was necessary for them to seek information and assistance from different sources. As a result of the findings, an informational pamphlet was developed and distributed to various rural hospitals located in West Virginia, so that information and sources of instruction for feeding …
A New Compactification For Celestial Mechanics, Daniel Solomon
A New Compactification For Celestial Mechanics, Daniel Solomon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This is an exposition of a new compactification of Euclidean space enabling the study of trajectories at and approaching spatial infinity, as well as results obtained for polynomial differential systems and Celestial Mechanics. The Lorenz system has an attractor for all real values of its parameters, and almost all of the complete quadratic systems share an interesting feature with the Lorenz system.;Informed by these results, the main theorem is established via a contraction mapping arising from an integral equation derived from the Celestial Mechanics equations of motion. We establish the existence of an open set of initial conditions through which …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background/Purpose: Few researchers have investigated college students' physical activity levels and motivations within university Basic Instruction Programs (BIPs) when students engaged in different games (modified games, small-sided games, and full-sided games) from different sports categories (e.g., net/wall games and invasion games). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate college students' Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) and motivations while playing different games in badminton and soccer classes. The study also examined how well motivation levels predict MVPA.;Methods/Analysis: Seventy-one college students (57 males and 14 females) from a rural Mid-Atlantic university participated in and finished the study. They came …
Adapting Roof Support Methods For Anchoring Satellites On Asteroids, Grant B. Speer
Adapting Roof Support Methods For Anchoring Satellites On Asteroids, Grant B. Speer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The use of anchorage in satellite and spacecraft design has been largely restricted to harpoon-inspired technology based on anticipated low strengths of cometary and asteroid material. Initial results from the Rosetta mission to comet 67P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko, however, have demonstrated both larger-than-expected compressive strengths of cometary materials and the importance of adequate anchorage to mitigate the risk of mission failure. The field of rock mechanics can provide unique insight into the design of these satellite and lander anchors by drawing on existing roof bolt technology. This study compared the behavior of tensioned point anchor and untensioned fully-grouted roof bolts with a …
Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Is Transmissible Among Cells Of The Central Nervous System, Neil T. Sprenkle
Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Is Transmissible Among Cells Of The Central Nervous System, Neil T. Sprenkle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Improper protein folding and trafficking are common pathological events observed in various cell types in neurodegenerative diseases. If the protein quality control mechanisms of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) fail to re-establish proteostasis, misfolded proteins accumulate within the lumen of the ER and perturb normal cellular processes. While low-level stimulation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) is considered a beneficial physiological response to transient protein misfolding stress, or ER stress, sustained UPR activation resulting from prolonged ER stress can promote neurotoxicity. The cell-autonomous mechanisms of the UPR have been extensively characterized in the context of neuropathology. Nevertheless, there still remain unanswered …

Numerical Simulations For Enhanced Methane Recovery From Gas Hydrate Accumulations By Utilizing Co2 Sequestration, Prathyusha Sridhara
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 2013, the International Energy Outlook (EIA, 2013) projected that global energy demand will grow by 56% between 2010 and 36500. Despite strong growth in renewable energy supplies, much of this growth is expected to be met by fossil fuels. Concerns ranging from greenhouse gas emissions and energy security are spawning new interests for other sources of energy including renewable and unconventional fossil fuel such as shale gas and oil as well as gas hydrates. The production methods as well as long-term reservoir behavior of gas hydrate deposits have been under extensive investigation. Reservoir simulators can be used to predict …

A Cbct Analysis Of Optimal Maxillary And Mandibular Incisor Inclination, Marina Gonchar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: One of the most challenging questions faced in the field of orthodontics is defining the envelope of tooth movement, and answering a fundamental question, where do teeth belong in relation to bone? Incisor position, both in the maxilla and mandible, are often compromised in order to accommodate an unfavorable skeletal pattern in the sagittal, vertical, and transverse dimensions during orthodontic therapy. Optimal incisor inclination has been a continuous debate in the field of orthodontics leaving the experts divided. The question still remains what are the clinical limits of orthodontic tooth movement, which will result in the most …
Effects Of Systematic Sleep Fragmentation On Tolerance And Threshold In A Pressure Pain Task: Associations With Sustained Attention, Margeaux Marissa Gray
Effects Of Systematic Sleep Fragmentation On Tolerance And Threshold In A Pressure Pain Task: Associations With Sustained Attention, Margeaux Marissa Gray
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Purpose: Pain is amplified following partial sleep deprivation. Pain has not been evaluated after sleep interruption, when total sleep time is preserved. Sleep interruption, also called sleep fragmentation, is ecologically relevant because it is caused by common sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea [OSA], Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome [UARS] and Periodic Limb Movements Disorder [PLMD]. The Sleep Continuity Hypothesis posits that the restorative effects of sleep are related to sleep quality in addition to quantity. With this study, my goal was to evaluate whether sleep fragmentation affected pain threshold and/or tolerance by systematically fragmenting the sleep of otherwise healthy …

Investigation Of Rope Formation In Gas-Solid Flows Using Flow Visualization And Cfd Simulations, Venkata Subba Sai Satish Guda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coal is still one of the widely-used resources for power generation all over the world. Most of the relevant industries use pulverized coal as fuel which is delivered to the furnace by pneumatic conveying. Extensive use of coal has resulted in severe environmental problems due to emissions such as Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen and Sulphur compounds among others. It is postulated that if combustion efficiency is improved, this will lead to significant reduction in pollutant emissions. Combustion efficiency of pulverized coal power plants is influenced strongly by particle size distribution. Most industries use Cyclone Separators (or Classifiers) to separate the larger …

Field Performance Evaluation Of A Disposable Sampler For Inhalable Heavy Metal Aerosols, Peter John Grimson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reliably sampling worker exposures to aerosolized particulates is an integral part of many industrial operations. The production of inhalable particulates in the presence of workers is a common issue and one that should be closely monitored by health and safety professionals. Regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Mine Safety and Health Administration have specific standards that are legally enforceable pertaining to particulate aerosol exposure limits. Therefore, in many industrial operations, air sampling of workers is an essential part of maintaining regulatory compliance.;Although many airborne particulates can pose significant health risks, the costs of air …
Robust Specularity Removal From Hand-Held Videos, Priyaankadevi Guggilapu
Robust Specularity Removal From Hand-Held Videos, Priyaankadevi Guggilapu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Specular reflection exists when one tries to record a photo or video through a transparent glass medium or opaque surfaces such as plastics, ceramics, polyester and human skin, which can be well described as the superposition of a transmitted layer and a reflection layer. These specular reflections often confound the algorithms developed for image analysis, computer vision and pattern recognition. To obtain a pure diffuse reflection component, specularity (highlights) needs to be removed. To handle this problem, a novel and robust algorithm is formulated. The contributions of this work are three-fold.;First, the smoothness of the video along with the temporal …
High School Coaches' Experiences With Openly Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Athletes, Meghan K. Halbrook
High School Coaches' Experiences With Openly Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Athletes, Meghan K. Halbrook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite reports that there has been a positive trend in perception and treatment of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals in recent years (Griffin, 2012; Loftus, 2001), sport, in general, is still an uncertain, and sometimes even hostile, environment for LGB athletes (Anderson, 2005; Beylin, 2006; Waldron & Krane, 2005). These concerns may be even more prevalent at the high school level, with student-athletes putting a strong emphasis on attempting to develop an independent and positive social identity through group or team interactions (Grant et al., 2014; Taifel & Turner, 1986). To gain more information on coach understanding and perceptions …

Characterization Of The Immune Response To Lipopolysaccharide In Early Pregnant Ewes As A Model To Study Bacterial Infection Induced Embryonic Loss, Jessalyn Marie Hadfield
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An immunological balance has to be established during pregnancy that protects the mother yet tolerates the semi-allogenic fetus. To understand the innate immune response during bacterial infections that may cause early embryonic loss, a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treated sheep model was used. Two objectives of this study were to examine if omega-3 PUFAs in the form of supplementary whole flaxseed could reduce the inflammatory response to an LPS challenge and to examine if there is a differential immune response to LPS in Suffolk and Dorset ewes. A total of 3 experiments were conducted; two investigating the effect of supplement and one …
More Than Just Attendance: Individualistic Versus Collective Religious Socialization On Religious Change, Caitlin Halligan
More Than Just Attendance: Individualistic Versus Collective Religious Socialization On Religious Change, Caitlin Halligan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With the recent rise in individuals not identifying with a religion, now is a prime time to research disaffiliation. Using data from the National Study of Youth and Religion, the present study examines whether or not collective religious participation in early adolescence, above and beyond individualistic religious participation, reduces the likelihood of disaffiliation in young adulthood. The results show that those who attended a religious youth group in early adolescence were less likely to disaffiliate in early adulthood than those who did not attend. Youth group seems to have a unique role in retaining youth involvement in the church.
Effect Of Chamber Pressure On The Quality Of Breech Face And Firing Pin Impressions, James A. Hamilton
Effect Of Chamber Pressure On The Quality Of Breech Face And Firing Pin Impressions, James A. Hamilton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Firearms evidence plays a vital role in shooting incident investigations. Included in this type of evidence is the comparison of fired cartridge casings. The evaluation of cartridge casings can inform investigators as to the number of firearms used in an incident. This evaluation includes the observation of breech face impressions imparted on the cartridge casing by the firearm. The comparison of these markings can assist investigators in the apprehension of perpetrators. However, the quality of these impressions may vary based on the pressures generated within a single system during firing leading to the appearance of multiple firearms being involved. Investigation …
Reactions Of Metal Carbides To Produce Carbon, Jeremy Hardinger
Reactions Of Metal Carbides To Produce Carbon, Jeremy Hardinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Calcium carbide was historically used to reduce potassium metal from potassium fluoride as described in a 1922 patent. This was prior to the discovery of electrolytic synthesis, which replaced the carbide process in less than five years. A byproduct of this process was elemental carbon. This carbon was unanalyzed at the time. The object of this research was to analyze carbon produced in reactions similar to this and to determine if this reaction could be carried out under milder conditions. It was found that the reaction is part of a family of reactions, and would proceed with a number of …
The Relationship Between Oil Prices And Us Dollar Exchange Rates In Short And Long Scales, Mostafa Hashemi
The Relationship Between Oil Prices And Us Dollar Exchange Rates In Short And Long Scales, Mostafa Hashemi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study is to revisit the relationship between US dollar exchange rates and crude oil prices in the post-2000 era, when both oil prices and USD exchange rates experienced record-high volatility. Specifically, I aim to answer: (1) do oil prices drive US dollar exchange rates or vice versa, (2) are oil prices and US dollar exchange rates integrated in the long-run, and (3) are the conflicting results found in previous studies on the relationship between the two due to the use of different frequencies of data (e.g. daily, weekly, and monthly). To answer these questions, I applied …

Understanding the localized ecological impacts of large-scale environmental (i.e., land use and climate) change is of critical importance not only to scientists tasked with natural resource management, but also individuals and communities across the world. In the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States, Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis serve as a key indicator species for the integrity of stream habitats. Brook Trout populations have largely declined throughout their native range, with impending climate change and thermal habitat exclusion potentially reducing Brook Trout habitat by more than 50%. Therefore, it is imperative that we understand interactions between Brook Trout and the …
Steam Reforming Of Ch4 Using Ni- Substituted Pyrochlore Catalysts, Daniel J. Haynes
Steam Reforming Of Ch4 Using Ni- Substituted Pyrochlore Catalysts, Daniel J. Haynes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The steam reforming of methane (SMR) continues to remain an important industrial reaction for large-scale production of H2 as well as synthesis gas mixtures which can be used for the production of useful chemicals (e.g. methanol). Although SMR is a rather mature technology, traditional nickel based catalysts used industrially are subjected to severe temperatures and reaction conditions, which lead to irreversible activity loss through sintering, support collapse, and carbon formation. Pyrochlore-based mixed oxide have been identified as refractory materials that can be modified through the substitution of catalytic metals and other promoting species into the structure to mitigate these issues …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: Mapping and exploratory spatial data analyses are ideal tools for characterizing spread and occurrence of human Lyme disease infection. Unfortunately, many mapped displays utilizing Lyme disease surveillance data are prone to bias due to a lack of consideration for geographical confounders. The objectives of our study were to 1) characterize the geographic effects that boundary and travel related biases have on visualization of human Lyme disease occurrence and 2) apply these findings to develop a more precise methodology for evaluating efficacy of animal sentinel surveillance programs in predicting incidence of human Lyme disease infection.;Methods: County-level human Lyme …
Using Carbon And Oxygen Isotopes To Monitor Water-Rock Interaction Under Simulated Geothermal Conditions, Stephen J. Henry
Using Carbon And Oxygen Isotopes To Monitor Water-Rock Interaction Under Simulated Geothermal Conditions, Stephen J. Henry
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Engineered or Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) have to potential to unlock vast high-temperature energy resources that lack the natural permeability and fluid flow required for power generation. In order to ensure sustained fracture connectivity in EGS, water-rock interactions must be understood in high temperature and pressure systems. Using cores from Brady's Field Well BCH-03, investigations were conducted to test the feasibility of using carbon and oxygen isotopes to monitor water-rock interactions under simulated geothermal conditions. Reactions were examined in a series of high-temperature pressure vessels and a high-temperature flow-through system in which a calcium bicarbonate solution was exposed to meta-volcanic …
Economic Activity And The Association Of Spending Rate And Spending Rate Volatility On Borrowing Cost, Anna W. Hickey
Economic Activity And The Association Of Spending Rate And Spending Rate Volatility On Borrowing Cost, Anna W. Hickey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Achieving minimum borrowing cost for municipal bonds is an ongoing concern. Apostolou, Apostolou, and Dorminey (2014) demonstrated that a fund accounting measure, spending rate magnitude (i.e., the absolute value of general fund revenues minus general fund expenditures) proxied for management's ability to balance revenues and expenditures. Their findings indicated that achieving balance at spending rate equilibrium (i.e., where general fund revenues equal general fund expenditures) was associated with minimum borrowing cost, and that the magnitude of departure from spending rate equilibrium was associated with higher borrowing cost. Little is known regarding the information content of spending rate in the years …

Teaching Without A Net: Experiencing Mandatory Curriculum Change, Stephen Ross Higgins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation reports a qualitative study that explored the reconstructed narratives of 4 West Virginia 7th grade social studies teachers. A methodology informed by narrative inquiry guided the research design, including the methods for data collection and data analysis. Two questions served as guideposts throughout the research process: What do the stories of the participants tell us about the ways in which teachers engage as developers of curriculum when curriculum change is mandated? In what ways did their stories of implementing a mandated change impact their professional identities? To explore these questions, I conducted 3 semi-structured interviews with each participant. …

The primary objective of this study was to characterize a battery electric vehicle (BEV) with respect to energy consumption as well as emissions from the battery or propulsion system. It was also desired to compare the BEV to internal combustion engine (ICE) powered vehicles in its class considering greenhouse gases, as well as energy economy, miles per gallon (MPG), and miles per gallon equivalent (MPGge) efficiency.;Tesla is a forerunner in BEVs. The approach they took in making their battery pack …
Between A Bear And An Eagle: Soviet Arms And The U.S. Response In Peru, William Horacek
Between A Bear And An Eagle: Soviet Arms And The U.S. Response In Peru, William Horacek
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research looks at the left-leaning military government of Juan Velasco Alvarado of Peru ruled from 1968 to 1975. This government embarked on a crusade to modernize Peru through a series of reforms and changes in Peruvian foreign policy. The United States responded with non-overt economic pressure, and the ending of military sales to Peru. Peru bought weaponry from the Soviet Union against the wishes of the United States in 1973, and this resulted in a more conciliatory foreign policy from the United States towards the Andean nation. The shifting foreign policy is the opposite of how historians have characterized …
Dynamic Model And Estimator Development For A Smart Refractory Brick With Embedded Wireless Sensors For Gasifier Applications, Qiao Huang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The operating temperature is one of the most important variables for gasifier operation. A higher temperature can shorten the service life of the refractory lining. A lower temperature can reduce the extent of carbon conversion and disrupt the flow of molten slag in a slagging gasifier. Therefore temperature is one of the most important variable in a gasifier. In slagging gasifiers, molten slag can penetrate into the refractory lining leading to refractory spallation, undesired downtime, and costly replacement. Even though the temperature and extent of slag penetration are extremely important for the gasifier operation, they cannot be measured reliably by …
