Phosphorus Determination In Forage And Manure Using Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy To Support Comprehensive Nutrient Management Planning, Yadav Sapkota
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Phosphorus (P) runoff from agricultural fields is a major cause of water quality degradation problems. A P mass balance across the farm could maintain profitability and sustainability of animal-based farms and minimize water quality problems. Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMPs) require mineral composition, especially P, data on soil, forage, and manure samples for accurate planning. However, traditional wet chemical methods of P determination are costly, time-consuming, and generate hazardous waste. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) could overcome many of these disadvantages and allow rapid determination of P concentrations. Portable XRF (PXRF) units are Energy Dispersive (ED) systems with low power X-ray tubes …
Comparing The Hydrodynamic Response Of Fracture Shearing In Marcellus And Eau Claire Shales, Matthew A. Stadelman
Comparing The Hydrodynamic Response Of Fracture Shearing In Marcellus And Eau Claire Shales, Matthew A. Stadelman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three samples of Marcellus and Eau Claire shales were sheared in a modified Hassler style core holder. Before testing and after each shear step, the hydraulic transmissivity was measured and a high-resolution 3-D image taken using a computer tomography (CT) scanner, resolution ranged from 26.7 to 27.6 microns. Each sample was sheared four to eight times during a test providing a total of 37 fracture geometries. The 3-D binary images of each fracture were processed based on a voxel connectivity graph, removing any clusters that were not connected to the main fracture. Two-dimensional aperture maps were then generated by flattening …
Radial Growth Patterns In Trees Surviving Canopy Gap Disturbances, Ruth A. Stetler
Radial Growth Patterns In Trees Surviving Canopy Gap Disturbances, Ruth A. Stetler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Forest disturbance regimes in eastern North America have long been conceptualized as localized gap disturbances, but recent studies suggest that more widespread, infrequent disturbance events may also be important. However, uncertainties in tree-ring methods used to detect disturbance, and in the factors that drive growth release of trees, limit the conclusions that can be drawn from regional disturbance analyses. I designed a study to further elucidate forest disturbance dynamics in eastern North America by using two approaches: 1) a case study examining the sensitivity of the radial growth averaging method of detecting disturbance and the factors influencing detection of a …

Comprehensive Modernization Of Firearm Discharge Residue Analysis; Advanced Analytical Techniques, Complexing Agents, And Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Brittany Louise Stevens
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The use of firearm discharge residue (FDR) evidence has been on the decline as a result of instrumental and analytical limitations and the inability to evaluate and assign evidentiary value. To utilize FDR evidence to its fullest extent, detection methods exploiting modern advancements in instrumentation must be explored and developed. Research has been performed in an effort to modernize FDR analysis but to date nothing has been implemented or found widespread use in forensic laboratories. This research investigated three analytical techniques for the detection of FDR; (1) ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), (2) thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS), and …

If A Rail Keks And No One Is Around, Does It Make A Sound?: Investigating The Use Of Autonomous Recording Units To Monitor King And Clapper Rails, Lydia Lenora Stiffler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Secretive marsh birds are challenging to monitor due to the difficulty in locating and trapping them within the dense emergent vegetation they occupy. Recently autonomous recording units (ARUs) have emerged as a novel alternative method to survey birds, although the technology has only been applied to a few species in specific field settings. There is limited information on how ARUs compare to human surveyors or how best to use ARU data that can be collected continuously. This thesis examines the applicability of ARUs for monitoring King (Rallus elegans) and Clapper ( R. crepitans) rails (collectively "rails") in two tidal marsh …
Time Perspective, Health Behaviors, And Wellbeing In Adults, Jonathan J. K. Stoltman
Time Perspective, Health Behaviors, And Wellbeing In Adults, Jonathan J. K. Stoltman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An important component of health behavior engagement is time perspective. Previous research has demonstrated that individuals with a more expansive temporal perspective tend to engage in more positive and fewer negative health behaviors. Depression, the leading mood disorder, has diverse symptomatology and is associated with reduced positive future thinking. This study seeks to identify whether positive or negative health behaviors differentially effect the association between time perspective and depressive symptomatology. Participants (n = 106; Mage = 35.2, SD = 12.7, range 18-65; 71.7% female; 87.7% white) were drawn from a community sample recruited via digital message boards. The study took …
Coal Mine Remediation As A Tool To Improve Disparate Coal Mining Impacts In Appalachian Communities Utilizing A Community Health Assessment Conceptual Model, Sarah J. Surber
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The coalfields region of central Appalachia bears the unfortunate hallmark characteristics of low socioeconomic status, poor health outcomes, and some of the lowest life expectancies in the United States, making some residents potentially part of vulnerable health populations. Vulnerability impacts the ability of individuals to respond or recover from stressors--- particularly environmental pollution---not as well as other individuals. Moreover, the economic outlook for the region is grim, given that the international coal mining industry has experienced serious recent downturns, and increased production from the natural gas sector has made coalfired power production domestically less competitive. As a result, many of …
Biopolitical Cyborgs In Post-1980 North American Critical Dystopias, Valerie Ann Surrett
Biopolitical Cyborgs In Post-1980 North American Critical Dystopias, Valerie Ann Surrett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stories of babies born from transplanted uteruses, fetuses created from three biological parents, a booming global surrogacy market, and embryonic gene selection have all made national headlines in the past two years. We live in an era of science fictional childbirths. Reproductive technologies that didn't exist a decade ago are now peddled to whomever can afford them, and science fiction has responded. Post-1980 speculative fiction confronts a potent convergence of various sociopolitical and reproductive trends, including the rise of neoliberal conservatism; the "test tube baby" boom; polarized reproductive rights debates; and Diamond v. Chakrabarty (1980), the Supreme Court decision granting …
A Model For Permeability Reduction In Polymer Nanocomposites And Its Experimental Validation, Man Chio Tang
A Model For Permeability Reduction In Polymer Nanocomposites And Its Experimental Validation, Man Chio Tang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Environmental concerns have led to research interest in biodegradable plastics, especially polylactic acid (PLA). PLA, a bio-derived and biodegradable polymer which is readily available, is easy to process, and it can be a good substitute for conventional non-biodegradable polymers in food packaging applications. However, its poor gas barrier property has to be improved to make it competitive with more widely-used materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS). This can potentially be accomplished by dispersing nanoplatelets in the polymer as these additives act as impermeable barriers around which the diffusing molecules are forced to take a longer, tortuous path. …

Presidential Executive Orders: The Bureaucracy, Congress, And The Courts, Michael Edward Thunberg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Primary immune deficiencies (PIDs) are genetic disorders that lead to defects in normal immune responses. While the causative gene for many of the more severe defects is known, new defects leading to additional syndromes are being described with increasing frequency. The most common group of PIDs are the primary antibody deficiencies (PADs), which manifest with low serum immunoglobulin levels, defective responses to vaccinations, and, for most, recurrent infections. In this work, we explore the genetic basis of common variable immune deficiency (CVID), the most common symptomatic PID, and related PADs using next-generation sequencing technology. In a large cohort of patients …
Inference Of Biogeographical Ancestry Under Resource Constraints, Tanjin Taher Toma
Inference Of Biogeographical Ancestry Under Resource Constraints, Tanjin Taher Toma
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We study the problem of predicting human biogeographical ancestry using genomic data. While continental level ancestry prediction is relatively simple using genomic information, distinguishing between individuals from closely associated sub-populations (e.g., from the same continent) is still a difficult challenge. In particular, we focus on the case where the analysis is constrained to using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from just one chromosome. We thus propose methods to construct ancestry informative SNP panels analyzing variants from a single chromosome, and evaluate the performance of such panels for both continental-level and sub-continental level ancestry prediction.;Efficient selection of ancestry informative SNPs is the …
Disruptions In Operant Behavior Of Pigeons In Transitions Across Rich And Lean Schedules Of Reinforcement With And Without Advance Notice Of The Lean Schedule, Forrest J. Toegel
Disruptions In Operant Behavior Of Pigeons In Transitions Across Rich And Lean Schedules Of Reinforcement With And Without Advance Notice Of The Lean Schedule, Forrest J. Toegel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
"Advance notice" refers to procedures in which a stimulus is provided to signal the end of an ongoing activity and the nature of the upcoming activity. Applied research has considered whether advance notice will reduce the problem behavior that sometimes occurs during transitions. Interpretation of this research is complicated by procedural variations in the type of transitions arranged, the consequences of transition-related problem behavior, the method of providing advance notice, and the measurement of the effects of advance notice. The present experiment investigated effects of advance notice using an animal model of transition-related problem behavior. Key-pecking was maintained on a …

The Response Of Naturally Regenerating Hardwood Seedlings To Post-Harvest Weed Control And Fertilization, Kevin Andrew Tomlinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current models to predict post-harvest success rely upon pre-harvest regeneration assessments, which rarely occur. Furthermore, these models lack management recommendations to improve regeneration success of naturally regenerating desired hardwood species following overstory removal. Factorial combinations of weeding and fertilization were randomly assigned to individual naturally regenerating black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.), chestnut oak (Quercus montana Willd.), white oak (Quercus alba L.), and red oak (Q. rubra L., Q. velutina Lam., and Q. coccinea Muenchh.) seedlings in the spring of 2015, three growing seasons post-harvest. Factorial ANOVA models with size at treatment application as a covariate were developed and showed species-specific …
Application Of Kalman Filtering For Pv Power Prediction In Short-Term Economic Dispatch, Luan H. Tran
Application Of Kalman Filtering For Pv Power Prediction In Short-Term Economic Dispatch, Luan H. Tran
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The aim of this thesis is to predict the short-term power production of PhotoVoltaic (PV) power plants for the economic dispatch problem with the help of Kalman filtering. The Economic Dispatch (ED) problem in power systems is known as an optimization problem in which the cost of producing energy to reliably supply consumers is minimized, hence the power production is assigned to all the generating units that are dispatchable. Because of the generation cost of renewable energy such as PV is relatively low, it is advantageous to utilize. However, these resources are intermittent. These renewable resources bring a lot of …
Using Material Culture Lessons To Cultivate Artistic Behaviors And Enrich Students' Conceptual Understanding In An Urban Middle School Classroom, Emily Turner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Within art education there is a contradiction between learning opportunities currently provided within the middle school art classroom, specifically in relation to media, and authentic contemporary artistic behavior and practice. Art educators focus instruction on traditional forms of media (i.e. drawing & painting) while evading contemporary art and artists. Much of what contemporary art is today is represented through everyday objects/materials and educators must provide students with an opportunity to experience both inquiry and contemporary art-making through media outside of the canon. Our personal identity, culture, and reality are composed of material forms, which often go unnoticed due to the …

Simulation Of Venturi Tube Design For Column Flotation Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Wan Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Froth flotation is one of the most important methods in mineral processing. Previous studies have found that using cavitation bubbles reduces both energy consumption and operating costs. Hydrodynamic cavitation is the most economical method used for creating tiny bubbles for flotation. In this study, the efficiency of cavitation bubble generating devices and their geometry design is analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD).;To optimize the geometric design of the venturi tube, a response surface method was conducted for evaluating the effect of six important parameters affecting the efficiency of the venturi tube. Critical velocities of cavitation of different designs were compared. …

Better management of current resources is one method to feed an ever growing population. Currently, sarcoplasmic proteins, water soluble proteins making up 25--30% of total protein in fish, are disposed of through municipal water treatment in surimi waste wash water. There is potential for the development of a simple method to reclaim and repurpose soluble protein from surimi wash water. The objective of this research was to 1) determine if processing temperature impacted protein recovery, 2) characterize the soluble protein powder, and 3) compare shelf stability to that of a similar protein powder (80% whey protein concentrate WPC). Separation temperature …
Precise Point Positioning Inertial Navigation Integration For Kinematic Airborne Applications, Ryan Watson
Precise Point Positioning Inertial Navigation Integration For Kinematic Airborne Applications, Ryan Watson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
UAVs have the potential for autonomous airborne remote sensing applications that require rapid response to natural hazards (e.g. volcano eruptions, earthquakes). As these applications require very accurate positioning, tightly coupled Global Positioning System (GPS) Precise Point Positioning (PPP) Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) are an attractive method to perform real-time aircraft positioning. In particular, PPP can achieve a level of positioning accuracy that is similar to Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS, without the need of a relatively close GPS reference station. However, the PPP method is known to converge to accurate positioning estimate more slowly when compared to RTK, a drawback of …

Exploring The Power Of County-Level Regional Classifications On Predicting Sex-Specific All-Cause Mortality In The United States, Julia Kay Wolf
Exploring The Power Of County-Level Regional Classifications On Predicting Sex-Specific All-Cause Mortality In The United States, Julia Kay Wolf
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sex-specific mortality rates have been found to differ across regions of the United States; however, these areas are typically the broad Census Bureau regions (i.e., Midwest, Northeast, South, and West) that do not consider sociological factors known to affect health. By testing the predictive capabilities of theoretically driven regional classifications distinguished at county-level, I explore whether there are more accurate ways of assessing mortality differences across the United States. Specifically, I use the US Census Bureau divisions and regional groupings produced by Joel Garreau (1981) and Colin Woodard (2011) to predict sex-specific, age-adjusted, all-cause mortality for 2008-2012 (centered on 2010). …
Reliability Study Of Blue Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes, Renyuan Yang
Reliability Study Of Blue Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes, Renyuan Yang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are very promising and considered as the next generation display and lighting sources due to their important merits, such as light weight, area-emission, vivid colors and flexibility. Over the last two decades, the OLED technology has drawn considerable research interest. Significant progress has been made, leading to much improved device reliability, luminance efficiency, and manufacturability. In the OLED family, phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs) are intrinsically more efficient than fluorescent OLEDs. However, compared with green and red PhOLEDs, blue PhOLEDs are considered as the 'weakest' mainly due to their low reliability, which is a great bottleneck limiting their …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this research project was to examine the ability to detect gunshot residue (GSR) from a person's face and determine if there was any statistical difference in the amount of GSR persisting on the face versus the amount persisting on a shooter's hands over time since the discharge of the firearm. From an investigative viewpoint, the presence of GSR could indicate some involvement with a firearm and warrant further investigation into the person of interest. Within this research, participants fired 1 round of ammunition from a firearm and after a designated amount of time had passed, were sampled …
Buying Thebes: Promoting A Cultural Commonwealth In Contemporary Anglophone Adaptations Of Greek Tragedy, Phillip Zapkin
Buying Thebes: Promoting A Cultural Commonwealth In Contemporary Anglophone Adaptations Of Greek Tragedy, Phillip Zapkin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project argues that theatrical adaptations of Greek tragedy exemplify the functioning of a cosmopolitan cultural commonwealth. Dramatists like Christine Evans, Colin Teevan, David Greig, Marina Carr, Femi Osofisan, Moira Buffini, and Yael Farber enact intercultural collaborations to reshape material from a cultural common and make that material meaningful for contemporary audiences. This collaborative ethos of drawing from shared source material undermines the logic of neoliberal late capitalism, which is premised on property ownership and individualist competition. "Buying Thebes" contributes to adaptation studies scholarship by theorizing a political economy of adaptation, combining both a formal reading of adaptation as an …
