Wethers and ewes were used to study the effect of catheter or repeated venipuncture on circulating cortisol and leukocyte concentrations and physical behaviors following administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a gram-negative bacteria cell wall component. Animals were injected with LPS or saline, as a control, to induce an innate immune system response. In addition, blood leukocytes and cortisol levels were studied to determine the effect of sex on immunological and stress responses. Thirty-eight mature Dorset and Suffolk wethers and ewes were assigned into one of four treatment groups: 1.) no-catheter + LPS treated ewes (n=5) and wethers (n=4) that were restrainted …

The Effects Of Signaled Reinforcer Duration On Preference, Anthony C. Oliver Jan 2017

The Effects Of Signaled Reinforcer Duration On Preference, Anthony C. Oliver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It has been suggested that reinforcers of different durations can be made more discriminable by pairing specific stimulus conditions with different durations (Bonem & Crossman, 1988). The purpose of the current experiment was to assess the effects of signaling reinforcer duration prior to reinforcer onset on initial-link responding under a concurrent-chains schedule of reinforcement. Initial-link responding was assessed across two sets of reinforcer durations (2- vs. 6-s hopper access and 6- vs. 10-s hopper access) and conditions in which terminal-link stimuli were the same (e.g., both red) and different (e.g., white, blue, or yellow). Preference was defined as the key …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The eighteenth-century poet, William Blake, is well-known today for his illuminated books, where a unique technique of relief etching allowed him to integrate text and illustration on a single printed copper plate, and his esoteric prophetic volumes. However, Blake's work went largely unrecognized during his lifetime and musical settings of Blake's poetry, in particular, are predominantly a twentieth and twenty-first century occurrence. With their distinctive styling and complicated interpretation, Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul have provided material for many song settings over the course of the twentieth century and make …

Three Essays On Time-Varying Risk Aversion And Investor Sentiment, Denghui Chen Jan 2017

Three Essays On Time-Varying Risk Aversion And Investor Sentiment, Denghui Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation explores issues regarding the effect of investor risk aversion and sentiment on financial markets. It is widely considered that a risk averse investor requires risk premium to hold risky assets, and the required risk premium is proportional to the riskiness of the underlying assets. From the myopic loss aversion perspective, investors, who get utility by frequently evaluating their portfolios and are more sensitive to losses, will require a higher risk premium as compensation for the fear of a major drop in financial wealth. Recent literature has shown that large tail jumps are often contributed to such major drop …

Biochemical Characterization Of The Release Of Fak Autoinhibition, Jessica E. Hall Jan 2017

Biochemical Characterization Of The Release Of Fak Autoinhibition, Jessica E. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Focal adhesion kinase is an essential nonreceptor tyrosine kinase that plays an important role in development, in homeostasis and in the progression of human disease. Multiple stimuli activate FAK, which requires a change in structure from an autoinhibited to activated conformation. In the autoinhibited conformation the FERM domain associates with the catalytic domain of FAK and PI(4,5)P2 binding to the FERM domain plays a role in the release of autoinhibition, activating the enzyme. This work aims to better characterize the residues involved in the release of the autoinhibitory conformation. The first aim was to characterize the effects of point mutations …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The postnatal growth and regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle rely on the successful activation and differentiation of muscle stem cells known as satellite cells. Although the NAD+-dependent protein deacetylase sirtuin-2 (Sirt2) has been suggested to have a role as a redox sensor during myogenesis, and in the regulation of metabolism, microtubule dynamics, and exit from the cell cycle exit, it is not known if Sirt2 has a regulatory role in muscle stem cell differentiation. This study aimed to elucidate the regulation of Sirt2 during the myogenic program of muscle satellite cells. The C2C12 mouse myoblast cell line was used to …

Redox Stable Anode Materials For Sofc Application, Tony Thomas Jan 2017

Redox Stable Anode Materials For Sofc Application, Tony Thomas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The common material design for solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is based on the cermet (ceramic-metal composite) material group, for example anode compositions like nickel with yttria stabilized zirconia (Ni/YSZ). One of the main limitations of these material groups is that they may undergo unwanted thermal expansion during redox cycles, causing dimensional instability at the anode. The state-of-the-art Ni/YSZ anode experiences a linear expansion of up to 1% when oxidized, causing an irreversible microstructural change, decreasing the electrochemical activity. The problem cumulatively increases if the cell design is anode supported as this puts the electrolyte under tension, causing it to crack …

Development Of A Spherical Micro-Indentation Test Methodology For Creep Analysis And On-Set Of Tertiary Creep For Solder Alloys, Dumbi Azubuike Otunyo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The continuous miniaturization of electronic devices and systems demands more understanding of the creep deformation and stress relaxation of solder alloys in order to improve the structural integrity of electronic devices and systems. Creep is characterized by a slow, time-dependent deformation of the material under constant stress or force. These solder alloys are often subjected to time-dependent deformation during service conditions, hence strain-time relationships obtained from creep experiments are used to analyze the deformation mechanism of mechanical structures and electronic interconnects under stress controlled conditions. Recently, instrumented indentation methods were proposed to study creep deformation mechanism as well as determining …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This paper begins by discussing Hungarian folk music, clarifying the difference between folk and art music. There is also a distinction to make between Hungarian peasant music, with its historical origins and five-tone scale, and Gypsy music, with its Oriental scales that played a major role in Liszt's music. Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly are the two leading researchers who studied Hungarian musical folklore. The contributions of those two composers, along with those of Liszt and Dohnanyi, are discussed in individual chapters, with emphasis on selected works. Many composers intended to write in Hungarian style; but Liszt created his own …

Empirical Genetic Algorithm Parameter Tuning Concerning The Synthesis Of Combinational Logic Circuits, Joshua Ward Jan 2017

Empirical Genetic Algorithm Parameter Tuning Concerning The Synthesis Of Combinational Logic Circuits, Joshua Ward

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study identifies optimal parameter values for a genetic algorithm used in the synthesis of combinational logic circuits. Parameters used to obtain an initial solution circuit are examined as well as parameters used to optimize solution circuits. Finding an initial solution circuit was done using a fitness function that was less influential while optimizing solution circuits used a stronger fitness function. This allowed parameters to be studied under very different circumstances. It was discovered that parameters which maintained a higher genetic diversity and strayed farther from the concept of "Survival of the Fittest" produced better results in general.
