The Quest For A Key Gene Controlling Acquisition Of Cell Competence During In Vitro Organogenesis In Tomato, Chanaka Roshan Abeyratne Jan 2017

The Quest For A Key Gene Controlling Acquisition Of Cell Competence During In Vitro Organogenesis In Tomato, Chanaka Roshan Abeyratne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Plants show a remarkable capacity for vegetative propagation through de novo organogenesis. Unlike their wild relatives, most commercially important crop species lack this ability, which is largely attributed to their inability to acquire regeneration competence by dedifferentiation of somatic cells. In vitro micropropagation relies heavily on overcoming such regeneration recalcitrance for its success in biotechnology and clonal propagation in agriculture. Here, we investigate a key locus (Regeneration1) responsible for acquisition of competence that confers high rates of de novo shoot and root organogenesis in tomato. In vitro shoot regeneration assay was performed in several Solanum pennellii introgression lines into S. …

Performance Of The Horizontal Wells In A Naturally Fractured Carbonate Reservoir, Fuad Al-Bayati Jan 2017

Performance Of The Horizontal Wells In A Naturally Fractured Carbonate Reservoir, Fuad Al-Bayati

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

About 60 percent of the world's proven oil reserves and 40 percent of gas reserves are trapped in carbonate reservoirs. Recovery rates are relatively low in carbonate reservoirs, and it is extremely challenging to predict due to the heterogeneous nature of these reservoirs. The majority of carbonate reservoirs contain fractures which may vary in size from millimeters to kilometers. A typical example of this type of reservoirs is oil and gas fields in the northern Iraq. These fields are almost all developed by vertical wells. This study will investigate the use of horizontal wells to enhance the productivity in one …

Impacts Of Boundary Conditions On Premixed Combustion In Obstructed Conduits: A Computational Analysis, Rawan Ibrahim Alkandari Jan 2017

Impacts Of Boundary Conditions On Premixed Combustion In Obstructed Conduits: A Computational Analysis, Rawan Ibrahim Alkandari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Premixed flame acceleration in channels or pipes has various practical applications, starting with fire safety problems and ending with advanced technologies such as pulse-detonation engines. In particular, a flame accelerates extremely fast when propagating through a comb-shaped array of narrow, tightly-spaced obstacles in a so-called "Bychkov tube". In the present thesis, the role of boundary conditions in such geometry is studied by means of the comprehensive computational simulations of combustion equations, with a fully-compressible hydrodynamics and an Arrhenius chemical kinetics. Specifically, the mechanistic (slip/nonslip) and thermal (adiabatic/isothermal) conditions at the walls/obstacles' surfaces, as well as the boundaries at the conduits' …

Productivity Index Of Horizontal Gas Well, Abdullah A. Almuraikhi Jan 2017

Productivity Index Of Horizontal Gas Well, Abdullah A. Almuraikhi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the most direct techniques to evaluate gas well production capacity is by productivity index (PI). As the application of horizontal wells has significantly increased since 1980s, a number of correlations for predicting the horizontal well PI have been developed by modification of the PI correlations for vertical wells. However, the predicted PI values by different correlations differ significantly. Furthermore, there are no available guidelines for proper application of the various correlations. The objective of this research is to determine the most reliable correlation for horizontal well productivity index in a gas reservoir and identify the key parameters that …

An In Vivo Evaluation Of Pulmonary Immune Response And Toxicity Following Combined Respiratory Exposure To Crystalline Silica And Diesel Particulate Matter, Breanne Yingling Farris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Crystalline silica (SIL) and diesel particulate matter (DPM) are each well-recognized for their potential to cause pulmonary toxicity following inhalation. However, these particulates have also been identified as coexisting in mixtures of respirable aerosols at a variety of industrial settings: mining, oil and gas extraction, construction, road construction, tunneling, excavation, foundry, and sandblasting. In order to characterize the potential for increased pulmonary health effects when these particulates are inhaled in a mixture, a battery of acute and subacute in vivo exposure studies were conducted. The current studies examined co-exposure to SIL and DPM at doses that were derived from field …

Black-Legged Tick Distributions, Small Mammal Abundances, Mast Production, And Vegetative Influences On Lyme Disease Apparent Prevalence On Fort Drum Military Installation, New York, Samantha R. Fino

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Lyme disease is the most common infectious disease spread by black-legged ticks in the Northern Hemisphere. Lyme disease is a vector-borne zoonotic disease typically caused by bacterial spirochetes of the species Borrelia burgdorferi. The primary vector of Lyme disease in the Midwestern and eastern United States is Ixodes scapularis, the deer or black-legged tick. Although there are several preventative measures against ticks that carry Lyme disease, such as public education regarding personal protection (e.g., wearing light colored clothing, tucking pants into socks, wearing repellent, promptly inspecting oneself to remove ticks, getting pets vaccinated) and recommended control measures, it is important …

Modeling And Design Optimization Of Multifunctional Membrane Reactors For Direct Methane Aromatization, Nicholas J. Fouty Jan 2017

Modeling And Design Optimization Of Multifunctional Membrane Reactors For Direct Methane Aromatization, Nicholas J. Fouty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Due to the recent increase of natural gas production in the U.S., utilizing natural gas for higher-value chemicals has become imperative. Direct methane aromatization (DMA) is a promising process used to convert methane to benzene, but it is limited by low conversion of methane and rapid catalyst deactivation by coking. Past work has shown that membrane separation of the hydrogen produced in the DMA reactions can dramatically increase the methane conversion by shifting the equilibrium toward the products, but it also increases coke production. Oxygen introduction into the system has been shown to inhibit this coke production while not inhibiting …

Evaluation Of Shared Space To Reduce Traffic Congestion: A Case Study On West Virginia University's Downtown Campus, Colin Frosch Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Shared Space To Reduce Traffic Congestion: A Case Study On West Virginia University's Downtown Campus, Colin Frosch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pedestrian and vehicle interactions often lead to conflicts that bring about safety, traffic congestion, and priority or right of way issues. Common methods used in the past to combat said issues have largely relied on the principle of separating the motions of pedestrians and vehicles by means of bridges, tunnels, signals, and access restrictions. A different approach known as share space aims to solve the same problems with a less structured and defined environment which instead places more reliance on human interaction and perception. Although it has been used in multiple scenarios across Europe with success, instances of shared spaces …

The Doonerak fenster of the central Brooks Range contains the Apoon assemblage, a suite of Early Paleozoic mafic-to-intermediate volcanic and siliciclastic rocks. The fenster exposes deep structural levels of the Brooks Range between regions of Laurentian and non-Laurentian origin in Arctic Alaska. During the Mesozoic to Cenozoic formation of the Brooks Range, Upper Devonian to Triassic siliciclastic and carbonate rocks of the Endicott Mountains allochthon were thrusted northward and juxtaposed over the top of this volcanic suite.;New geochemical data indicates that the Apoon assemblage formed as part of an island arc complex. The assemblage contains basaltic-to-andesitic rocks with diverse textures, …

Spread Of False News Stories On Facebook: An Assessment Of Credibility Cues And Personality, Lacie Geary Jan 2017

Spread Of False News Stories On Facebook: An Assessment Of Credibility Cues And Personality, Lacie Geary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study used a 2 x 2 method to examine the effectiveness of credibility cues on Facebook and how the personality traits neuroticism and openness impact sharing behaviors across cues of different shapes and colors. Findings suggested the color red increased cue noticeability, however, overall a low number of participants noticed any of the four varying cues across conditions, indicating that the fast-paced scrolling nature of online mediums prevents users from noticing credibility cues. Future research should examine the differences in pace of scrolling and information intake across different generations. This information might be useful to media outlets to help …

Open-Access Crime Maps As Digital Rhetoric And Crime Reporting In Chicago: Using New Aesthetic Overlaps To Change Journalism And Citizen Interaction, Aaron Geiger Jan 2017

Open-Access Crime Maps As Digital Rhetoric And Crime Reporting In Chicago: Using New Aesthetic Overlaps To Change Journalism And Citizen Interaction, Aaron Geiger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When data mining meets the rhetoric of maps and crowdsourcing in the age of digital journalism, we can use the abundance of data to change, modify or reinforce particular reporting behaviors or journalism policies. We also live in an age of overlapping boundaries of technologies, algorithms and human interfaces---it is within these overlaps that we find anomalies, "glitches", and digital errata that can expose different perceptions of the same artifacts and algorithms. The overlapping of the heterogeneous network, as James Bridle calls it, is known as The New Aesthetic. It is not a movement, but "a series of artifacts ... …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dynamics of coastal stream water quality and ecosystem health is influenced by a multitude of interacting environmental drivers. A systematic data analytics approach was employed to determine the relative environmental controls on stream dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics across the Gulf Coast of U.S.A. Pearson's correlation, principal component, and factor analyses were utilized to examine the interrelations among DO, solar radiation, water temperature, atmospheric pressure, flow rate, nutrients, pH, and specific conductance (a surrogate of salinity) in 36 streams. Relative linkages of DO and the environmental drivers were then reliably estimated by resolving multicollinearity with power-law based partial least squares regression …

The Effect Of A Leader's Emotional Intelligence On The Subordinate's Intention To Whistleblow, Xin Geng Jan 2017

The Effect Of A Leader's Emotional Intelligence On The Subordinate's Intention To Whistleblow, Xin Geng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two experiments in this dissertation examine the effect of a leader's emotional intelligence and its interaction with other constructs on the subordinate's intention to whistleblow. Results from the primary experiment indicate that when the leader is not involved in the observed accounting fraud, the subordinate is more likely to whistleblow to the leader if the leader has high emotional intelligence or high group prototypicality. The relationship between leader emotional intelligence and subordinate whistleblowing intention is stronger when the leader has high group prototypicality and is mediated by the subordinate's perceived leader-member exchange, trust in the leader, and job satisfaction. These …

On The Matroid Intersection Conjecture, Shadisadat Ghaderi Jan 2017

On The Matroid Intersection Conjecture, Shadisadat Ghaderi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this dissertation, we investigate the Matroid Intersection Conjecture for pairs of matroids on the same ground set, proposed by Nash-Williams in 1990. Originally, the conjecture was stated for finitary matroids only, but we consider it for general matroids and introduce new approaches to attack the conjecture.;The first approach is to consider the situation when it is possible to make a finite modification to the matroids after which the pair satisfies the conjecture. In such a situation we say that the pair has the Almost Intersection Property. We prove that any pair of matroids with the Almost Intersection Property must …

Seismic Texture Applied To Well Calibration And Reservoir Property Prediction In The North Central Appalachian Basin, Connor Gieger Jan 2017

Seismic Texture Applied To Well Calibration And Reservoir Property Prediction In The North Central Appalachian Basin, Connor Gieger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Enhancing seismic interpretation capabilities often relies on the application of object oriented attributes to better understand subsurface geology. This research intends to extract and calibrate seismic texture attributes with well log data for better characterization of the Marcellus gas shale in north central Appalachian basin. Seismic texture refers to the lateral and vertical variations in reflection amplitude and waveform at a specific sample location in the 3-D seismic domain. Among various texture analysis algorithms, here seismic texture is characterized via an algorithm called waveform model regression utilizing model-derived waveforms for reservoir property calibration. Altering the calibrating waveforms facilitates the conversion …

Gas-Phase Protein Structure Characterization With Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samaneh Ghassabi Kondalaji Jan 2017

Gas-Phase Protein Structure Characterization With Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samaneh Ghassabi Kondalaji

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the last few decades, the widespread application of soft ionization techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) facilitated the characterization of large biomolecules in the gas phase. Under suitable conditions and during the short timescale of the desolvation process associated with ESI (10-12-102 s), the solvent-free protein ions preserve significant portions of their native solution-phase structure and are presumed to be kinetically protected from thermodynamic destabilization such as unfolding-refolding processes occurring in the gas phase that could yield an "inside-out" structure.;The combination of ESI with ion mobility spectrometry- mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) provides information regarding higher-order …

Non-Equilibrium Green's Function Based Calculations Of Spin Voltage In Cobalt Based Spinel Oxides, Anveeksh Koneru

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tougher sanctions on fossil fuel emissions and greater energy demand around the globe is forcing us to rely more on renewable energy resources. Clean energy technologies like thermoelectric power generation provides one solution to ease our dependence on non-renewable energy resources. Thermoelectric materials have the capability of directly converting heat to electricity. However, the efficiency of thermoelectrics has been limited due to the inherent coupling of the electronic and thermal carriers. More recently, an avenue to decouple these interactions has been experimental demonstrated using temperature gradient induced spin currents. With this new discovery comes the need for new transport models …

Bobcat Population Ecology In West Virginia, Stephanie Michelle Landry Jan 2017

Bobcat Population Ecology In West Virginia, Stephanie Michelle Landry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are a popular furbearer and game species throughout their range in North America, where they serve as a top predator in many of their ecosystems. However, bobcat populations across their range declined during the 1800s and early 1900s due to overharvest. Overharvest and habitat loss in Europe also affected the Iberian lynx ( L. pardinus), resulting in the listing of all Lynx spp. under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in 1977. Bobcats were listed under Appendix II, which required that state management agencies monitor their bobcat populations for stability. Since their listing, bobcat populations …

Microbial Quality And Pathogen Decontamination Strategies For Locally-Grown, Fresh Produce From West Virginia And Kentucky, Ka Wang Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study aimed to evaluate the microbiological quality/safety of fresh produce from farmers' markets (FM) and assess the post-harvest washing practice with antimicrobials to inactivate Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes on fresh produce. In study I, 212 produce samples were tested for the presence of Salmonella and Listeria spp. using modified FDA-BAM methods. Aerobic plate counts (APCs), total coliforms (TCCs), and yeast/molds were analyzed on petri-films. Among the 212 samples, the APCs, TCCs, and yeast/molds were 3.72-5.63, 3.67-5.47, and 3.07-4.13 log CFU/g, respectively, with spinach containing the highest (P<0.05) populations. Among all tested samples, Salmonella enterica spp. enterica was detected on 18.6% of spinach, 10.9% of tomatoes, 18.5% of peppers, and 56.3% of cantaloupes, which is much higher than previous reported. Only 3.78% of the samples were confirmed for Listeria spp., and 50% of them were identified as L. monocytogenes, based on multiplex PCR results. Due to the high percentage of pathogens detected on the farmers' marker produce, an evaluation of post-harvest produce washing with various antimicrobials was conducted in study II. Specifically, spinach, tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers were inoculated with S. Typhimurium and Tennessee or L. monocytogenes and washed in tap water, vinegar water (10%), lactic acid (5%), a lactic and citric acid blend (2.5%), and sodium hypochlorite (200 ppm) for 30 sec or unwashed. Vinegar water (10%) showed better (P<0.05) reduction of S. Typhimurium and Tennessee on tomatoes and cucumbers, and L. monocytogenes on tomatoes and peppers than tap water. The three antimicrobials reached an additional reduction level of 0.9 to 2.7 (S. Typhimurium and Tennessee) and 0.2 to 1.4 log CFU/g ( L. monocytogenes) compared to tap water. Lactic acid caused the greatest (P<0.05) reduction of S. Typhimurium and Tennessee on spinach and green peppers, and sodium hypochlorite showed the great (P<0.05) reduction of L. monocytogenes on cucumbers. The results supplied important information for FM vendors to develop post-harvest protocols to control foodborne pathogens.
