Since kinetic studiees of the thermal decarboxylation of cyclobutani-1,1-dicarboxylic acid and cyclopropane=1,1=dicarboxylic acid has been performed for the molten solids and for solutions in various liquid solvents, these acids were chosen in this work to study therman reactions in solid ionic media. Each acid was ground and mixed with powdered potassium bromides, pressed into a pellet, heated for various periods of time, and the amount of reaction of the acid followed by means of changes in its infrared spectrum.

This investigation was designed to determine the effects of studying French culture on the attitude toward French and the language skills of French II students. This study tested the hypotheses (ten) that studying French in a special instructional program based upon four designated elements of French culture (sports, the French people and family, education and French youth) would not affect the attitude toward French and the language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of French II students.

The western two-thirds of West Virginia is a significant portion of one of the major landslide areas in the United States. Landslides in soil slopes produce millions of dollars of damage to West Virginia highways annually. The research described in this dissertation was devoted to the development of criteria for recognizing potential slide areas and for analyzing soil slope designs. This paper describes a computer program which was developed to simulate the IBM 3705 Communications Controller, using the IBM System/360 and System/370 computers. The architecture of the 3705 is discussed in some detail, and the structure of the simulator is described. Future enhancements to the present program are suggested, along with possible applications.

The Berea Sanstone consists of marine and non-marine facies in west-central West Virginia. The Cabin Creek and Gay-Fink trends represent alluvial channel fill depositis. They are parallel to the westward dipping regional slope and are oriented 65-70 degrees to the depositional strike (north-south) of the sheetsand facies.

The Relative Contribution Of Selected Nonverbal Behaviors To The Communication Of Empathy In A Counseling Interview., George Ronald Mcmullan

This study investigated the relative contribution of nonverbal behavior to the judged level of empathy communicated in a role-played counseling interview. Thirty master's level counselor candidates rated thirty-two combinations of eye contact, body orientation, trunk lean, hand gesture, and positive head nod, with standardized interaction distance and medium level verbal empathy message on a modification of the Truax-Carkhuff Empathy Scale. The study employed a 2x2x2x2x2 repeated measures analysis of variance design. Results showed that two of the main effects and fifteen interactions significantly accounted for the variability of the subejcts' ratings. This study consisted of a theoretical and empirical analysis of the property tax shifting behavior of the monopolist that is subject to rateof-return regulation. The theoretical analysis found that if the rateof-return constraint is continuously enforced, then the property tax shifting behavior of the profit or sales maximizing regulated monopolist will not differ from that of its unregulated counterpart. If, however, the regulatory constraint is only sporadically enforced, then differences in tax shifting behavior between regulated and unregulated monopolists can exist. Whether regulation is continuous or sporadic, however, merely allowing the regulated monopolist an after-tax return cannot guarantee that the …

he Herbarium at West Virginia University has accumulated a collection of approximately ten thousand packets of mosses collected from West Virginia over a period of eighty years. Several taxonomic papers have been published about this group of plants, but none consolidates all the information concerning the classification and distribution of these mosses. Specimens dating back to 1891 were examined and checked, and nomenclatural changes were made. Field trips were conducted, and more specimens were collected. Forty-four families, one hundred and eleven genera, and two hundred seventy-three species have been catalogued. A brief description is given for each species as well …

The basic contentions of this study are: (l) that despite its commitment to the principle of national self determination, the United States has been remiss in carrying out its responsibilities as the administrator of the TTPI; and, (2) that military considerations or perceived requirements for U.S. national security have been most influential in shaping U.S. policy in the trust territory, that these considerations have probably eliminated independence as an acceptable alternative for Micronesia, and have largely determined the future status or form of association between Micronesia and the United States.

The growth of manufacturing in Pittsburgh, and the growth of specific industries, cotton, iron, and glass, for example, have received some attention, but the basic economic developments in southwestern Pennsylvania as a whole have not received the same attention. Yet, in 1850 and 1860 over sixty percent of the population lived outside of the urban area around Pittsburgh. While manufacturing continued to grow, most rapidly in the Pittsburgh area, the people of the region as a whole had to deal with transportation, agricultural, labor, and monetary problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between lateral dominance and music learning. The general method of this study consisted of comparisons of the following two kinds of data: (l) measures of various types of lateral dominance, and (2 ) measures of music learning. The measures of lateral dominance consisted of scores from tests of handedness, eyedness, and earedness. Laterality index scores were computed from the measures of handedness and eyedness. The Chapman rearrangement of dimethyl N-cyanoimidocarbonate (89), dimethyl N-cyanothioimidocarbonate (90), and N,N-dimethyl-N′-cyanomethylisourea (91) has been investigated. N-cyanotrimethylurea (24), the normal Chapman rearrangement product of 91, was observed along with several other compounds when 91 was heated neat for several hours. Among the products of the rearrangement of 91 were three isomeric oxadiazines. These compounds were probably formed by a 1,4 addition of an N-acyl carbodiimide (resulting from a 1,4 O→N migration of the methyl group in 91) across the cyano group of compound 91. In contrast to 91, 89 and 90, upon being heated, underwent quantitative conversion to the corresponding …
