WVHEA respondents were not united on the idea of integrating knowledge from several disciplines as compared to strengthening specialization. The purpose of this dissertation is to show how symmetry is a general determinant* of musical composition. Symmetry will be defined as a congruence which results from certain specific operations, namely those of reflection, rotation, or translation and will be applied to any aspect of musical composition. A composition is here to be the combination and arrangement of parts to form a whole. Stated in another v/ay, the purpose is to demonstrate how postoperative congruences define the arrangement and combination of the parts of musical works.

Originally, the problem investigated in this project was to synthesize and study the metalative properties of 7H-phenaleno[1,2-b]thiophene. However during the synthesis by an unambiguous method, it became apparent that the properties were at variance with those reported in the literature. It was the purpose of this investigation to study the use of concrete and abstract stimuli in the development of perceptual abilities of disadvantaged five year old children. Hypotheses to be tested were (1) that subjects who were presented a curriculum of concrete stimuli initially and progressing to stimuli if abstraction would have greater perceptual development than those subjects who were presented a curriculum of abstract stimuli, and (2) that subjects receiving curricula of concrete and abstract stimuli would have greater perceptual development than subjects serving as the Control Group. This paper contends that the Stoney (Assiniboine) people of southwestern Alberta, Canada, have a legitimate aboriginal claim to areas in the North Saskatchewan River headwaters known as Bighorn and Kootenay Plains, located between the first range of the Rocky Mountains and the Alberta-British Columbia boundary. The Stoneys appear to have followed two routes during their eighteenth-century westward migration from southeastern Manitoba. One group moved southwestwardly to central Montana, turning northward into the Alberta Rockies; while the other seems to have travelled along the prairie-parkland fringe, entering the mountains west of Edmonton, with one band taking possession of the upper North …

This document reports a research effort directed at compiling the field theory, noise theory, and communication theory necessary to perform systems analysis and optimization of an electromagnetic communication system for use within a mine. The field equations and power transfer between loops placed in an infinite, homogeneous, lossy medium is examined and relationships between parameters are determined that provide optimum transfer of signal power. This analysis is extended to cover the case of an infinite, homogeneous, lossy half-space used to model the actual mining situation. A Comparison Of The Effects Of Acute And Subacute Inhibition Of Cholinesterase On The Sensitivity Of Rat Tissues To Drugs, Dennis Joseph Foley

This study was undertaken to further define the characteristics of subsensitivity produced by chronic administration of cholinesterase inhibitors and to attempt to elucidate a possible mechanism by which it occurs. Administration of disulfoton, echothiophate , parathion and OMPA to rats for eight days resulted in a decreased sensitivity of segments of ileum to carbachol and a marked inhibition of both true and total cholinesterase. The results indicate that a relationship between the degree of subsensitivity and the extent of cholinesterase inhibition may exist.

This document reports a research effort to define criteria which can be used for early indications of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) in association with coal miners' pneumoconiosis. Selected measurements of the vectorcardiograms (VCG's) of 18 miners with pneumoconiosis are compared with corresponding measurements of a normal group of 32 non-miners. The components of the vectors associated with the MRSV, SMRSV, MLSV, and the MAZ are the selected measurements. MAZ is a vector occurring before the MLSV and which has a maximum anterior component. In all of the alcohol oxidations referred to previously, the alcohol was converted to some other substance (e.g., to tosylate, halide) before reaction with DMSO. Many alcohols, however, have been allowed to react with DMSO without prior conversion.⁴⁹ Traynelis et al. found that dehydration was the usual result when secondary and tertiary benzylic alcohols or tertiary aliphatic alcohols were heated at 160–185° in DMSO for nine to sixteen hours (equations 53 and 54). The dehydration of eleven alcohols was reported, and evidence suggested a carbonium ion mechanism.⁵⁰ A subsequent modification of reaction conditions permitted the dehydration of alcohols previously found …

A petrographic and stratigraphic study of the Middle Mississippian Greenbrier Group ("Big Lime") and associated units of southwestern West Virginia was undertaken by using 879 thin sections from 15 wells, 633 drillers' logs, and 66 mechanical logs. The "Big Lime" of southwestern West Virginia was deposited in a shallow- shelf, shoaling environment following slow transgression of the subtropical Greenbrier seas over a Pocono-Maccrady, deltaic-tidalflat complex. Regressive-transgressive fluctuations caused shoaling during lower to middle Union time, producing halo and crestal type oolite accumulations over Maccrady topographic highs. Biosparites were intimately associated with the shoal areas. Deepening of waters upon continued transgression …

The unambiguous six-step syntheses of 7H-phenaleno[2,1-b]thiophene and 7H-phenaleno[1,2-x]thiophene are described. A study of the reaction of thiophene-3,4-dicarbonyl chloride with benzene and aluminum chloride was made. A nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of the degree of homoallylic coupling between the methylene groups in the following thiophene analogs of 9,10-dihydroanthracene is reported.

The Leary system of interpersonal diagnosis was introduced in its entirety during 1957 as a descriptive alternative to traditional psychiatric assessment involving interpersonal behavior. It attempts to provide a conceptual and measurement framework by removing rating discrepancies among data sources from the realm of undesirable distortions vis-a-vis "True" traits, and by relating these discrepancies to processes such as conflict and identification in an operational fashion. The basic premise supporting operational definitions such as conflict and identification requires that the structural interrelations of interpersonal variables be similar regardless of the data source from which obtained. An 11 square mile block of the Pittsburgh Coal of relatively uniform thickness, ash content, sulfur contenet and roof rock was studied in detail in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The objective of this study was to determine the variability and patterns of variability in coal thickness, ash content and sulbur content and to determine the relationship between these patterns and the paleotopography of the original surface of the coal swamp. Linear correlations between these variables were statistically evaluated.

There has long been a need for a study of Thomas Randolph who served intermittently as Elizabeth's agent (later as ambassador) in Scotland between the years I? 59 and 1586. This is a detailed study (in narrative style) of his involvement in Scottish affairs, based primarily on original manuscripts (largely found in the British Museum and the Public Record Office, London). Most of his letters are calendared and are readily available; thus they have been heavily relied upon for Anglo-Scottish studies. Unfortunately, some of the abstracts are inaccurate, misleading, or inadequate. Consequently, there have been misinterpretations. Moreover, Randolph is merely …

This study was undertaken to investigate the phenomenon of subsensitivity which occurs after repeated administration of an organophosphorus cholinesterase inhibitor. This manuscript has provided evidence to suggest that subsensitivity is not the result of qualitative changes in the cholinergic receptor or changes in the nerve endings. The author has suggested that a change in the number of receptors might be responsible for subsensitivity which is produced by chronic cholinesterase inhibition.

The Southern Appalachian Highlands represent a unique geographical region in which to study plants. The Ericaceae, especially well developed in this region, are a family of plants which have long been of interest to man. At the present time there exists no adequate treatment of the Ericaceae of this particular area. The present study, based mainly upon examination of herbarium specimens and supplemented by studies in the field, attempts to correlate these findings with all the scattered published information concerning the genera of this family in the Southern Appalachians.
