A piece of mobile mining equipment must possess sufficient power to overcome normal resistances and also resistances whose prediction and quantification is much more difficult, such as those accompanying cyclic maneuvers and emergencies. These abnormal, highly variable resistances require a quantity of reserve power. The sum of reserve power, required power, auxiliary power, and ambient corrections represents the total power requirement. Reserve power is traditionally defined as "the additional power available to a vehicle for climbing grades and for acceleration." The present study involved an examination of cost-effectiveness analysis of two types of back-up reinforcers (high-cost, low-cost) in a token economy program. Subjects were ten adult institutionalized retarded females who earned tokens for completion of three unit management and three recreation target behaviors. Tokens were redeemable for one of two types of back-up reinforcers, either high-cost or low-cost reinforcers. Classification of reinforcers into one of the two types was primarily related to whether or not they involved a monetary expenditure that was frequent and necessitated fiscal programmatic planning. Organic compounds capable of ion-exchange were adsorbed on granular graphite. The ion-exchange capacity of the graphite modified in this manner was found to be limited to (DBLTURN) 10('-6) eq/g of graphite by the available surface area of the graphite. Acidic surface oxides on the graphite interfered with the determination of the contribution of the adsorbed organic compounds to ion-exchange. An electrically conductive ion-exchange medium was developed by partially oxidizing granular graphite with strong oxidizing agents. Fluidized bed combustion offers a clean and relatively inexpensive method for coal combustion. There are various physical and chemical processes occurring in the fluidized bed combustor, some of which are investigated in this work. Devolatilization and combustion of a single coal char particle, minimum fluidization velocity at high temperatures, fluidization regimes, and SO(,2) release rates in FBC are the areas examined in this work. The thermal unimolecular decomposition of ethylbenzene, iso-propylbenzene, t-butylbenzene, n-propylbenzene, isobutylbenzene, neopentylbenzene, 4-ethylstyrene, 1-phenyl-1-butene, 1-1 diphenyl-ethane, and 2-2 diphenylpropane was studied using the very-low-pressure pyrolysis (VLPP) technique. Each reactant decomposed by way of c-c bond fission producing an alkyl radical plus a benzyl or benzylic-type radical. RRKM calculations show that the observed rate constants when combined with thermochemical estimates are consistent with the following high-pressure rate expressions: log(k/s('-1)) = 15.3 - (72.7/(theta)) for ethylbenzene (1053 - 1234K), log(k/s('-1)) = 15.8 - (71.3/(theta)) for isopropylbenzene (971 - 1151K), log(k/s('-1)) = 15.9 - (69.1/(theta)) for t-butylbenzene (929 - 1157K), log(k/s('-1)) = 15.3 - …

Bis-(1-tricyclo{lcub}4.1.0.0('2,7){rcub}heptyl)dimethyl-silane (22) and-germane (23) and tetrakis-(1-tricyclo{lcub}4.1.0.0('2,7){rcub}heptyl)silane (14)were synthesized from 1-tricyclo{lcub}4.1.0.0('2,7){rcub}heptyllithium (20). 2,10-Disila- (30), 2,10-digerma- (32), and 2-germa-10-sila (31) -2,2,10,10-tetramethylheptacyclo{lcub}10.4.0.0('1,11).0('3,8).0('3,9).0('4,9).0('11,16){rcub}hexadecaneswere synthesized from the requisite dilithio- derivatives of either 22or 23. These dilithio- derivatives were also used to synthesize 2,2'-spirobi-2,10-disila- (33), 2,2'-spirobi-2,10-digerma- (35), 2,2'-spirobi-2-sila-10-germa- (33), and 2,2'-spirobi-2-germa-10-sila (34), 10,10-dimethylheptacyclo{lcub}10.4.0.0('1,11).0('3,8).0('3,9).0('4,9).0('11,16){rcub}hexadecanes.2,10-Disila-2,2-bis(1-tricyclo{lcub}4.1.0.0('2,7){rcub}heptyl)-10,10-dimethyl-heptacyclo{lcub}10.4.0.0('1,11).0('3,8).0('3,9).0('4,9).0('11,16){rcub}hexadecane (15) was synthesized from the dilithio- derivative of 14. The UV spectra of 14 and 30 show weakly enhanced end absorption when compared to composite spectra of either the corresponding bicyclobutane and n-butyltrimethylsilane or 1-trimethylsilyltricyclo{lcub}4.1.0.0('2,7){rcub}heptane (8a). These results suggest that the central bonds of the bicyclobutane moieties interact through the vacant silicone d-orbitals. …

A theoretical model is proposed, and experimental data presented and analyzed, for the overall convective heat transfer coefficient at ambient conditions between horizontally immersed tubes and a gas fluidized bed of particle sizes usually applicable in fluidized bed combustion of coal. The overall heat transfer coefficient is a function of "gas" and "particle" heat transfer coefficients. The bubbling flow assumption, together with the two-phase theory of fluidization, is used to obtain a simple analytical solution for the particle convective heat transfer coefficient. Four studies were conducted to determine effects of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT) and estradiol-17(beta) on secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) in ewes. In the first study, tonic and LHRH-induced secretion of LH was affected by intravenous infusion of DA, NE and 5-HT in a dose-dependent manner in ovariectomized ewes. Responses of LH to increasing doses of DA and 5-HT were biphasic and slopes of dose-response curves between catecholamines and 5-HT were opposite. Secretion of PRL was inhibited by DA and NE but not affected by 5-HT. In anestrous ewes no effects of DA, NE and …

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships of health locus of control and health value to perceived self-care health behavior of undergraduate students. The Multidimension Health Locus of Control Scales (Form A), developed by Wallston, Wallston, and DeVellis (1978) were used to measure the respondents' beliefs regarding health locus of control. Upgrading of coal derived liquid can be accomplished by super-critical solvent separation. An experimental method and an X-ray measuring technique were developed to observe the separation of coal liquid contacted with supercritical solvent. The cell is operated at constant volume and varying temperature with meaurements of pressure and X-ray photographs of the cell contents. The pressure - temperature conditions are dependent upon the total initial charge at different solvent to coal liquid ratios. Feasible methods, measures and models which can be used to assess the availability of a continuous mine system are developed. The models, based on a simplified representation of room-and-pillar mining, are derived using the principles of Markov processes. A new measure of system reliability and performance, called the penalized availability is defined. This measure can be applied to any process flow system whose output may be derated due to failures of certain components. Two analytical models of the Japanese foreign policymaking serve as the point of departure for this study: the tripartite power elite model and the "tripod system" model. According to the power elite model, which is the most popular model for Japan, there are three groups in Japan--the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), bureaucracy, and big business--that dominate the Japanese policy-making process as a cohesive triumvirate elite group. Causal modeling was used to examine the effects of educational program, age, belief in internal locus of control, belief in control by chance, belief in control by powerful others, and the influence of exercise of self-care agency on self-care orientation to nursing. East Africa's wildlife is justly famous. This study examines the difficulty of preserving large numbers of wild animals in societies committed to widespread and rapid economic development. In Kenya the colonial administration had to devise a policy that would enable a rapidly expanding European settler community to live side by side with hundreds of thousands of potentially destructive wild animals. The purpose of this study was to ascertain what adolescents who become stepchildren between the ages of 13 and 18 believe to be the stressful and non-stressful aspects of stepfamily living. This study also attempted to determine if the level of stress for adolescent stepchildren does diminish over time when comparing subjects living in a stepfamily less than two years, two to three years, three to four years, and four to six years. Alkali materials exist in coal in both inorganic and organic forms. As a means of studying the release of alkali material from the organic phase, sodium and potassium benzoate have been chosen as model compounds. The decomposition of these two compounds, in terms of both gaseous species and residues, have been studied in argon, carbon dioxide, and air. Thermogravimetric methods were used to determine the different ranges where decomposition occurred and to obtain kinetic information. The parameters affecting the hydrofracturing of coal were investigated through laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. Effects of (i) fluid flow rate, (ii) confining stresses, (iii) orientation of material axes, and (iv) fluid viscosity were studied experimentally. Equations relating the ultimate tensile strength of coal as a function of confining stresses were developed. The expressions for crack tip stresses around a crack in an anisotropic material were used along with the results of previously performed experiments to show that the maximum normal stress criterion should be used in the fracture mechanics model of Pittsburgh coal. A comprehensive one-dimensional model for the simulation of combustion of wet coal has been developed taking into account (i) the vaporization of coal moisture and the existence of a moving evaporation front, (ii) pyrolysis and char/gas reactions occurring in the dry coal zone, (iii) molecular diffusion and Darcy flow through the coal, (iv) variation in porosity and permeability of the coal, (v) temperature dependence of the physical properties of the coal, (vi) transpiration cooling effect of the water vapor and pyrolysis gases, (vii) multi-component diffusion in the ash and gas film, and (viii) oxidation reactions in the ash. The interaction of myeloperoxidase (MPO) with H(,2)O(,2) and Cl('-) provides a potent cytotoxic/antimicrobial system for polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). MPO-related cytotoxicity may be associated with the formation of toxic oxidant MPO intermediates, OCl('-), or both. MPO itself is able to oxidize drugs and cellular components. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) able to act as antioxidant free radical scavengers are shown in this study to inhibit luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) which results from the MPO-H(,2)O(,2)-Cl('-) interaction. The purpose of this study was to design, implement and evaluate a program involving parents in teaching reading skills. Three procedures for parental involvement were employed to determine which was most effective in enhancing the reading skill performance of kindergarten students. A total of 136 kindergarten children received pre and post tests of The Wisconsin Tests of Reading Skills Development: Word Attack and Comprehension, Level A. All subjects' verbal abilities were determined by The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Parents of all subjects received their children's reading pretest scores.
