This study reports on how work relations and the management of human resources at the point of production in underground coal mining serve to increase or diminish coal production outcomes. The major objectives of this research were identification of incidents producing work interruptions; and an assessment of the effect of such interruptions on the production of a given workcrew. The study employed a conceptual framework derived from X-Efficiency theory and utilized an exploratory approach to the problem. The objective of my research project was to examine how insulin and the glucocorticoids, alone, and in combination, regulate hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) at the level of functional mRNA coding for G6PD. The model system I utilized for these studies was primary cultures of adult rat liver parenchymal cells. These cells were maintained in a serum-free and chemically defined medium so that direct effects of added hormones on the hepatocytes could be ascertained. Dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetic glucocorticoid, when added alone did not have an effect on G6PD activity. Insulin caused about a 1.6-fold increase in enzyme activity, and when …

Julian Hawthorne, the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne, was once a popular writer whose fictional works include twenty-four novels and over eighty short stories. Though he was highly regarded by many critics in his time, he is little known today, even among scholars specializing in American literature. The few studies of Hawthorne written in this century generally concur with an opinion commonly expressed by Hawthorne's contemporaries: that he wrote too rapidly to produce carefully crafted novels though he was more successful with his short stories and novellas. A new general approach is presented for extending the useful operating frequencies of; linear active networks in general, inverting integrators, finite gain amplifiers, and active filters in particular, realized using Operational Amplifiers (OA). This is achieved by replacing each OA in the active network by a Composite Operational Amplifier (CNOA), constructed using N OA's. The technique of generating the CNO's for any given N is proposed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of attitude toward mathematics of prospective elementary teachers in an undergraduate elementary mathematics methods course. Two groups of prospective elementary teachers enrolled at The Pennsylvania State University participated in the study. The experimental group consisted of 136 students enrolled in the elementary mathematics methods course. The control group consisted of 47 students enrolled in the elementary science methods course. During the first and last class meetings of each course, attitude scales were administered to determine the extent of attitude change. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of high school calculus on achievement in college calculus for first-year students. The sample consisted of all first-time Calculus I students who were graduates of American high schools and who were enrolled at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, West Virginia. The sample numbered 69 and was composed of four different sections of Calculus I. Achievement was divided into two areas: manipulative skills and problem-solving skills. Measures on these areas were taken from four investigator-devised examinations which were designed so that scores in the two areas could be obtained. …

These students were of varying majors enrolled at Potomac State College of West Virginia University at Keyser, West Virginia. The following hypotheses were tested using post-test procedures. The primary purposes of this research are to (1) predict the behavior of gas condensate reservoirs, and (2) predict the recovery of liquid hydrocarbons from these reservoirs. Factors involved in liquid recovery are fluid phase behavior (retrograde condensation and liquid revaporization), reservoir heterogeneity, perforation strategies, gas injection versus depletion, cross flow between reservoir layers, injection gas fingering, and pattern geometry. First factor is extremely important to predicting liquid recovery from a gas condensate reservoir. This research project investigated whether differences existed in second, fourth, and sixth graders' performances on concrete tasks involving conservation and classification reasoning operations and reading tasks involving similar reasoning operations. The study attempts to determine the extent to which discretion produces varying attempts to determine the extent to which discretion produces varying interpretations of policy and case information. Possible variation in interpretation would produce inconsistency or lack of uniformity in decisions within an organization. Hydride derivatives of ((eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,4)CH(,3))(,2)ZrCl(,2) were prepared to examine their sterochemistry and reactivity. {lcub}(eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,4)CH(,3))(,2)ZrH(Cl){rcub}(,x) was prepared, but its characterization was inhibited because it disproportionates in solution to equimolar amounts of ((eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,4)CH(,3))(,2)ZrCl(,2) and {lcub}((eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,4)CH(,3))(,2)ZrH((mu)-H){rcub}(,2), I. I was directly prepared and was completely characterized. The molecular structure of this complex consists of two ((eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,4)CH(,3))(,2)ZrH units linked by two three-center, two-electron Zr-H-Zr bonds. It contains a crystallographic center of inversion and, necessarily, trans terminal hydrides. The important bond angles with the Zr(,2)H(,4) core are H(,t)-Zr-H(,b), 70(1); H(,t)-Zr-H(,b)', 130(1); H(,b)-Zr-H(,b)', 60(1); Zr-H(,b)-Zr', 120(1)(DEGREES). The present study examined the effectiveness of a preschool peer mediator to facilitate generalization of social behavior change. Previous research has shown peers to be effective mediators in treatment programs, however, their efficacy as generalization facilitators is less clear. Preschool children observed to play aggressively with toys and speak in an aggressive manner were selected as subjects. The children were divided into two groups of two. The peer tutor did not engage in these aggressive behaviors. Peer tutor training consisted of discussion, role play, modeling, praise, and physical affection. The widow appears frequently on the Restoration comic stage, and yet, almost without exception, she provokes laughter only at her own expense. In the thirty-eight comedies examined in this study, widows suffer various types of abuse, from witty derision to physical assault. However, in virtually every instance--whether in her treatment by fellow characters or in her depiction by the playwright--the widow's exploitation involves her financial situation. Moreover, this common factor is a key to understanding why widowhood, essentially tragic, became comic during the Restoration. Highly intelligent criminal offenders and non-offenders were compared on self-reported biographical data in order to investigate similarities and differences in their developmental histories. Subjects were 81 male volunteers ranging in age from 21 to 67 years. All were members of Mensa, an international society whose only criterion for membership is a score at or above the 98th percentile on a standardized intelligence test. The study group was comprised of 27 Mensans currently or formerly incarcerated in state or federal prisons for at least 180 consecutive days. A technique was developed for the determination of total arsenic (As) in soil using differential pulse polarography. Soil samples were digested with a combination of HNO(,3) and H(,2)SO(,4). Total As was determined in M HCl after reduction of As(V) to As(III) with hydrazine sulfate. Soil and fly ash standards were analyzed by this method and agreement within one standard deviation between replicates was obtained. Approximately 99% recovery of As was obtained from spiked soil samples. Differential pulse polarography is also quite useful for the rapid determination of arsenite in solution during studies of As sorption - desorption by soils. A …

The primary purpose was to determine if a significant difference in learning styles exists among registered nurse students, basic nursing students, and nurse educators in a baccalaureate nursing program. An in-depth investigation of Big Run Bog, a 15 ha Sphagnum-dominated wetland situated in a 291 ha forested watershed in the unglaciated Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, has indicated that (1) because of its low-lying physiographic position within its watershed, Big Run Bog receives runoff from the surrounding upland areas, and thus is not an ombrotrophic bog but rather is a minerotrophic fen, (2) physical and chemical properties of the peat and the chemistry of surface and subsurface water were comparable to values reported for Sphagnum-dominated wetlands in the glaciated regions of eastern North America, (3) spatial variation in hydrologic …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of filmed modeling and distraction techniques in the modification of children's behavior during blood work procedures. Subjects were 48 children between the ages of six and eleven who were referred for this procedure by the Cardiology, Neurology, and Hematology Clinics. While reasons for referral varied, some common reasons included possible heart murmur, possible seizure activity and abnormal blood counts. Prior to their laboratory work, children in the Modeling group viewed a videotape that depicted two children experiencing the blood work procedures. Schmidt (1975) and Weinberg, Guy, and Tupper (1964) have expressed the expectation that post-KR delays in simple to complex motor tasks must increase as task complexity increases if the rate of acquisition is to be maintained. This study was an attempt to investigate that prediction. Nine treatment conditions were established by the interaction of three levels of post-KR delay with three levels of task complexity. Volunteer subjects (N = 10 for each treatment condition) were male undergraduate and graduate students at West Virginia University during the summer of 1979.
