For a number of years, it was assumed that the protection measured during a laboratory fit test was indicative of the protection provided by the respirator during actual use in the workplace. Beginning in the early 1980's, workplace protection factor studies were conducted to validate this assumption. These studies indicated that quantitative fit test results did not correlate with actual workplace protection factors. A fit test that indicates the degree of exposure is especially important when Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) exposures are involved. Coaches and administrators involved in athletics in the educational milieu proclaim that sport is an integral part of the educational process. The National Federation of State High School Associations maintains that athletics is "educational" (Jable, 1986). However, positive outcomes are not inevitable and in fact negative outcomes often occur. Human exposure to silica is of great occupational concern as it is marked by pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. The present work was performed to investigate, characterize, and modulate the responses that occur as a result of silica exposure. The intratracheal instillation of silica to rats results in pulmonary fibrosis but the cellular processes involved in the development of the chronic disease have not been well characterized. The hypothesis of this study was that pharmacological intervention early in the silica-induced inflammatory cascade will attenuate fibrosis development. Both academic and business communities are concerned about how the conduct of argument affects decisions made by small groups. While most parties with experience in argument have intuitive ideas about why argument occurs as it does, empirical evidence is seldom available. This multi-subject single-case investigation identifies relations among kinds of statements made during persuasive argument. Argument was conducted during five separate experimental sessions between different pairs of people. To examine the relation between the intensity of systemic bodily events and content-specific fear conditioning to stimuli that are fear-relevant or prepared for such associations, the present study involved a direct comparison between the conditioning effects produced by 20% and 13% CO{dollar}\\sb2{dollar}-enriched air (UCSs) to three CS types: external fear-relevant (snake moving toward viewer), internal fear-irrelevant (human heart beating arrhythmically), or neutral control (flowers swaying in the wind). Using a general, second-order, nonlocal formalism (Ganguli et al., 1985, 1988, 1994), we find that multiple Inhomogeneous Energy-Density Driven (IEDD) nonlocal eigenmodes with comparable growth rates are possible for a given set of parameters. This is in contrast to local modes and to most of the nonlocal modes, where the "the ground state" is usually most unstable. This finding suggests a possible explanation of the broadband and spiky spectrum of IEDD waves seen in laboratory experiments (Koepke et al., 1994, 1995; Amatucci et al., 1994; Carroll et al., 1996) and in Particle-In-Cell simulations (Nishikawa et al., 1988, 1990). Selenium is a nutritionally essential trace element for mammals, and several studies have suggested that selenium may have an important function in the central nervous system. We hypothesized that selenium may play an important role in the differentiation of myelin producing cells, i.e., oligodendrocytes in developing brain. We employed an in vitro model system of glial cell cultures prepared from newborn rat brains to test this hypothesis. In mixed glial cell cultures, selenium deficiency inhibited developmental upregulation of myelin-specific genes, i.e., proteolipid protein (PLP), basic protein (BP) and myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) as assessed by Northern blot analysis. GaN was grown by molecular beam epitaxy in an effort to determine nucleation and growth conditions which lead to high quality, single-crystal films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to show that growth under Ga-rich conditions promotes the nucleation of films with large nucleation domains leading to a lower density of intrinsic defects related to domain boundaries. These conditions are also shown to promote a 2-D growth mode resulting in films with a high degree of nucleation domain coalescence and surface roughnesses below 2 nm. The sodium pump activity declines rapidly after denucleation of erythroblastic cells. To investigate whether this decrease in the rat erythroblastic cells is due to changes in isoforms of the {dollar}\\alpha{dollar} and {dollar}\\beta{dollar} subunits of the Na,K-ATPase during maturation, techniques of cryoultramicrotomy and immunoelectron microscopy with protein-A-gold were used. The primary objective of this study was to develop a system to deliver antisense oligonucleotides (ONs) via the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor. Since many tumor cells derived from epithelial tumors overexpress the EGF receptor they can be preferentially targeted. In this study, a delivery system comprising of a conjugate of EGF covalently linked to poly-L-lysine (an ON binding moiety) was synthesized, characterized and tested for in vitro efficacy. Studies were carried out in A-549 cells showed that EGF-PL promoted up to a 12-fold increase in uptake of the oligonucleotide. Both compensation and hydrogen-related phenomenon in ZnSe grown by MBE have been systematically investigated in this study. Atomic hydrogen is demonstrated to effectively clean GaAs substrates for subsequent growth of ZnSe by molecular beam epitaxy. Significant reduction of micro-defects in both undoped and nitrogen doped ZnSe is achieved using atomic hydrogen cleaning of GaAs substrate prior to ZnSe growth without any other treatment. The density of stacking faults in ZnSe is less than {dollar}\\rm1\imes10\\sp4\\ cm\\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}{dollar} in layers grown with atomic hydrogen cleaning, while it is greater than {dollar}\\rm1\imes10\\sp7\\ cm\\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}{dollar} in layers grown with conventional thermal cleaning. This study is to develop acoustic waveguides for Acoustic Emission (A.E.) monitoring of concrete structures, in order to overcome the difficulty of high acoustic attenuation in concrete. Solid embedded waveguides, liquid-filled embedded waveguides and solid surface waveguides have been developed in this study. An analytical model of a waveguide with infinitely thick cladding was used to study the wave propagation in an embedded solid waveguide. Limestone calcination is an important process for the power generation industry. Calcination is the precursor to the sulfation process which is used for flue gas cleanup. This research studies the effects of a pulse combustion exhaust stream on the calcination of limestone. Results are presented for different types of limestone, injected at different exhaust stream conditions and locations in the exhaust stream. A new strategy in devising two-terminal voltammetric sensors is described. In our approach, such detectors are obtained by using ionic forces to confine two different redox groups to the same surface. The one is analyte-sensitive, and acts as the sensing site, while the other is analyte-insensitive, and thus operates as the reference site. The layer-by-layer deposition technique enabled us to attach multilayer systems to the surface of a gold electrode. To these multilayers various redox couples can be bound by ionic forces. Competition and convection effects in reaction-diffusion fronts and controlling chaos are studied. In Chapter 3 we report theoretical studies of competition in which two self-replicating organic molecules compete for a common reactant. We found that the self-replicating organic molecule can give sustained reaction-diffusion fronts. This phenomenon is investigated by numerical solutions of partial differential equations that couple local nonlinear kinetics and diffusion. Reaction-diffusion fronts involving competing species are then initiated and the concentration profiles of the autocatalysts monitored. The study explored the knowledge and perceptions of faculty of masters level schools of social work about social work licensure and the licensing examination and the interactions of social work faculty with boards of social work examiners. A questionnaire was mailed to 989 Council on Social Work Education members which queried their knowledge about licensure and the licensure examination and about their interaction with boards of social work examiners. 493 questionnaires were returned.
