The alternative framework that students bring to the science classroom often have considerable effect on the ideas and concepts held by students as they leave that classroom. Addressing these alternative frameworks has been an area of great interest in science education. This study examined the effect of a computer-based hypermedia program, developed to incorporate constructivist philosophy, in bringing about conceptual change in pre-service elementary teachers' alternative frameworks in regard to global warming. This study analyzes the interrelationship between disease and the politics of British colonial health care in western Kenya in the period 1895 and 1939. Based on a wide array of archival and secondary sources, the study contextualizes the evolution and development of British colonial health care system within the wider context of socio-economic changes in colonial western Kenya. The impact of various diseases on the nature, tempo and direction of socio-economic change in colonial western Kenya is examined. Burnout represents a danger to the mental and physical health of human-service workers. Burnout often diminishes the quality and efficiency of service provided by workers and thus represents a danger to service recipients and a cost to employers. Repeated studies suggest that workers who report higher levels of job stress and lower levels of social support are more likely to report higher levels of burnout. Nursing home staff are subject to considerable occupational stress and report high levels of burnout. This dissertation is a case study of the University of Maryland at College Park for the purpose of analyzing the communication patterns that may have been responsible for the success of UMCP's downsizing process. On campus interviews with key persons were conducted to identify the flow of communication through the UMCP authority hierarchy. Several military attack scenarios involve the detonation of explosive in the soil backfill surrounding a target structure. In this study, experiments and numerical simulations were performed to determine if the enhanced mechanical properties of geogrid-reinforced soil backfills could mitigate blast effects from buried explosions. The dynamic response of an explosively-loaded, geogrid-reinforced sand was successfully characterized, identifying and quantifying certain blast mitigating effects. Six high explosive experiments were conducted, each involving a 0.91 kg nitromethane explosive charge placed at 76.2 cm depth within a test pit of compacted fill. The concept of using prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) for remediation of contaminated sites with fine-grained soils is examined. The PVD system is used to shorten the drainage path of the groundwater flow and promote subsurface liquid movement expediting the soil flushing process. The use of PVDs in the current state of practice has been limited to soil improvement. The use of PVDs under vacuum conditions is investigated using study soils consisting of 100% sand and 80% sand/20% kaolinite mixture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of using books on tape to provide print experiences to children at-risk for reading difficulty. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is becoming an increasingly important tool for engineering analysis. In CFD simulations obtaining grid independent solutions without excessive cost is desirable. Hence, there is a need to evaluate higher order accurate discretization schemes (both spatial and temporal). Moreover, many journals require at least second-order accuracy for publication. Physical abuse of children is a major social issue affecting families. Children under the age of three, children with disabilities, and those born prematurely have each been shown to be high risk populations for experiencing physical abuse. This study investigated several child, family, and environmental factors associated with physical abuse within a population of children born prematurely. Forty-five mother-child dyads from each of three chronological age groups (6 months, 12 months, and 18 months) participated. The chicken egg yolk protein genes, vitellogenin (VTG) I, II, III, and the very low density apolipoprotein II (apoVLDLII), are highly expressed in hepatic parenchymal cells in an estrogen-dependent manner. Compared to the other egg yolk protein genes which respond in approximately 2-4 hours after the primary administration of estrogen, the VTGI does not respond for about 20 hours. The mechanism of activation of the egg yolk protein genes is not completely known. Of the VTG genes VTGII and III promoter regions have been isolated and characterized, whereas the promoter region of the VTGI gene has yet to be identified. …

The pulmonary delivery of peptide drugs involves an understanding of the barriers to absorption which include poor permeability, potential activation of alveolar macrophages (AMs) and enzymatic degradation. The aim of the study is to develop methodologies to study the relative nature of respiratory tract epithelia. Inhibition of the chitin biosynthetic enzyme, glucosamine synthase (EC.2.6.1.16, L-glutamine:D-Fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase) has been shown to be a promising approach to the development of antifungal agents targeting the cell wall. The best known inhibitors of glucosamine synthase possess epoxy-ketones and {dollar}\\alpha,\\beta{dollar} unsaturated carbonyls. In vivo, these inherently reactive moieties are easily deactivated by nucleophiles like glutathione. Hence we decided to develop inhibitors lacking such highly reactive groups. Development of multisubstrate analogs is a logical approach to inhibition of multisubstrate enzymes. In the novels Lady Oracle, The Handmaid's Tale, and Cat's Eye, I locate and name the sites of memory to show how Atwood's protagonists appropriate them as their loci of resistance. The localized sites though marginalized are within the realm of representation; however, the "space-offs," a term I borrow from film theory, are beyond "the ideological." The purpose of this study was to monitor physiological responses of children in grades 4 and 5 during incremental tests on slide board and bicycle exercise and to determine whether children enjoy the slide board as a fitness activity. Twenty healthy subjects (10M, 10F; 10.1 {dollar}\\pm{dollar}.72 yrs) completed maximum continuous tests in 3 minute stages on the slide board, beginning at 40 slides/min, increasing by 10 slides/min each stage; and on the bicycle beginning at 25 watts, increasing by 25 watts each stage. The objective of this study was to determine the dominant mechanism (OH-radical scavenging or non-OH-radical scavenging mechanisms) of radioprotection by the thiol scavenger dithiothreitol (DTT) making comparisons between a cellular and isolated plasmid DNA model systems. The protection mechanism of DTT was determined experimentally by comparing the thiol to known OH-radical scavenging compounds (dimethyl sulfoxide, glycerol and 1,3-dimethyluracil) measuring the relative differences in their protection factor for radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in cells and single-strand break induction in the plasmid DNA model. This dissertation explores the Counter Propagation Network (CPN) to implement an image feature finder for automatic image matching systems. This research concludes that the CPN paradigm does not appear to be capable of extracting distinctive features for matching complex images such as fingerprints. There are three possible factors explored in the document that contribute to this inability to match. These are: (1) Image Enhancement - Most of fingerprint images have certain levels of localized blur or smear, locally low contrast, or other noise. This examined teacher misbehaviors' relationships to student cognitive and affective learning, student liking of the instructor, and student resistance. Socio-communicative style, nonverbal immediacy, and behaviors characteristic of communication anxiety were examined as possible predictors of learning, liking, and misbehaviors. Factor structures of the resistance behaviors and of the teacher misbehaviors were explored. Data were collected both at the beginning of a semester and at the end of a semester survey. Results suggest consistency with previous models. Responsiveness, nonverbal immediacy. and teacher misbehaviors all contribute a significant amount of variance to learning. The focus of this study is a narratological reading emphasizing the narrator/narratee relationships in three highly mediated, nineteenth century, English Gothic novels: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1817); Charles Robert Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer (1820); and, J. Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla (1872). A narratological reading depicts how the form of these novels illuminates their content to demonstrate that these Gothic stories do have redeeming literary merits and are not just popular fiction. The mesophase pitches produced from petroleum (A240) and coal (HEXT450) have been characterized by several analytical techniques. The kinetics of mesophase formation from these two distinctly different precursor materials have been studied and an empirical kinetic equation proposed. Using the model parameters the petroleum pitch is found to have similar reactivity with respect to mesophase formation when compared with the coal-derived pitch. A new technique of determining mesophase content using computer-assisted image analysis has been demonstrated successfully and reproducibly. The Multiple Eating Antecedent Scale (MEAL) is a behavioral instrument used to measure diet nonadherence in people with diabetes mellitus. The current study was conducted to gather additional reliability and validity indicators of the MEAL. A prospective design was used to measure diet, blood glucose, stress and adherence in 38 adults with blood Type I and Type II diabetes mellitus for four consecutive days. Comparisons were made between self-monitoring data and MEAL scores. In addition MEAL category scores were compared to established diabetes-specific questionnaires as a measure of MEAL validity. The purpose of this study is to show the influence of lupus on the life and selected works of Flannery O'Connor. Through reading O'Connor's manuscripts, letters, and books, correspondence with Nancy Bray, curator of the Flannery O'Connor collection, and Sally Fitzgerald, and visiting Milledgeville, Georgia, the author has been able to describe O'Connor's life before and after she was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Because the author is also a victim of a connective tissue disease, similar to lupus, she has shared many of the same symptoms of O'Connor which are also detailed.
