Exchange Rate Volatility And Dynamic Trade Pricing Under Costly Adjustment., Qiming Ran

I extend the price adjustment cost model to the open economy. To study price variations in response to exchange rate fluctuations, I develop a dynamic model for exporting firms that face convex cost in the adjustment of their prices for the export destination countries. The theoretical findings are that it is optimal for firms not to change their existing prices immediately after a change in exchange rate. The speed of price adjustment is found to depend on discount rate, slope of the demand curve, and cost of price adjustment, while the volatility of the exchange rate has no effect on …

Air pollution from automobiles is a serious problem in major metropolitan areas in the United States. It has been suggested that adding higher alcohols derived from coal to gasoline may help to reduce some of the more toxic emissions from automobiles and also extend the gasoline pool. The main objective of this study is to systematically assess the economic cost of producing coal derived alcohols for use in this capacity under conditions of uncertainty and to identify any relevant production and supply constraints. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender equity in medical coverage and injury prevention of basketball programs at NCAA Division I colleges and universities. The population for this study were 100 randomly sampled head athletic trainers at NCAA Division I colleges and universities that compete in both men's and women's basketball. Each participant was mailed a survey packet containing a cover letter and a questionnaire. The total return rate was 69%. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Analysis Systems. Currently, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic is world-wide and threatens the entire human population. The causative agent of AIDS is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), a retrovirus. The HIV viral population exhibits tremendous variation, making the development of vaccines difficult and anti-viral drug therapy ineffective due to the emergence of drug-resistant HIV strains. In this study, the Transit Automata (TA) model, a Cellular Automata (CA) based spatial model, has been developed. It includes a set of cells, states, rules, events, and a system clock. In contrast to CA, a TA model fragments the problem space along restricted routes. All cells on the routes are treated as equal and controlled by rules. Like CA models, an initial configuration of a TA model can be embedded and can be dynamically changed during the runtime. Human exposure to silica is of great occupational concern as it is marked by pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. The present work was performed to investigate, characterize, and modulate the responses that occur as a result of silica exposure. The intratracheal instillation of silica to rats results in pulmonary fibrosis but the cellular processes involved in the development of the chronic disease have not been well characterized. The hypothesis of this study was that pharmacological intervention early in the silica-induced inflammatory cascade will attenuate fibrosis development. Selenium is a nutritionally essential trace element for mammals, and several studies have suggested that selenium may have an important function in the central nervous system. We hypothesized that selenium may play an important role in the differentiation of myelin producing cells, i.e., oligodendrocytes in developing brain. We employed an in vitro model system of glial cell cultures prepared from newborn rat brains to test this hypothesis. In mixed glial cell cultures, selenium deficiency inhibited developmental upregulation of myelin-specific genes, i.e., proteolipid protein (PLP), basic protein (BP) and myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) as assessed by Northern blot analysis. GaN was grown by molecular beam epitaxy in an effort to determine nucleation and growth conditions which lead to high quality, single-crystal films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to show that growth under Ga-rich conditions promotes the nucleation of films with large nucleation domains leading to a lower density of intrinsic defects related to domain boundaries. These conditions are also shown to promote a 2-D growth mode resulting in films with a high degree of nucleation domain coalescence and surface roughnesses below 2 nm. Rats and pigeons responded under schedules of delayed reinforcement in three experiments. Two operanda were available but only one was correlated with reinforcement. In Experiment 1, either operandum could be correlated with reinforcement depending on which was pressed first. Due to this procedure the source of reinforcement varied irregularly between sessions. In Experiment 2, the operandum correlated with reinforcement was pre-determined and remained consistent within conditions. In Experiment 3, the source of reinforcement was pre-determined and varied semi-randomly. In the later half of the eighteenth century, French engineer-scientists revolutionized hydraulics. Funded by Royal research programs, these experimenters formulated predictive equations for flow velocities and quantities. Their results were published throughout Europe and America, causing a distinct change in the practice of designing aqueducts. Case studies of aquaeducts for Edinburgh in 1721 and New York City in 1838 detail the changes in the practice of hydraulic design. The intent of this project was to investigate the flow field and emissions of laterally and radially oscillating natural gas flames produced by slot and axisymmetric fluidic nozzles used as burners. The behavior of flames produced by three nozzles was studied. A parametric study was conducted while visualizing and quantifying the flame flow field and measuring emissions produced by the flame. Nozzle configurations included two different-sized axisymmetric nozzles and one slot nozzle. Flame oscillation frequency varied from zero to 35 Hz; equivalence ratios ranged from 0.6 to 1.4. A 5.8-kb EcoRI chromosomal fragment from Coxiella burnetii functions to initiate plasmid replication in Escherichia coli from a 403-bp minimal autonomous replication sequence (ars) (Chen, 1989). The minimal ars contains motifs found in bacterial origins, including two DnaA boxes, three AT-rich 21-mers, a transcriptional promoter leading rightwards, and potential IHF and FIS binding sites. Database comparisons of deduced amino acid sequences revealed that open reading frames adjacent to ars shared identity to genes often located near bacterial chromosomal origins. Children under the age of three, children with disabilities, and those born prematurely have each been shown to be high risk populations for experiencing physical abuse. This study investigated several child, family, and environmental factors associated with physical abuse within a population of children born prematurely. Forty-five mother-child dyads from each of three chronological age groups (6 months, 12 months, and 18 months) participated. Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of patterns of follicular development on fertility in beef cows. In Experiment 1, effects of persistent follicles (PF) on recovery of embryos, fertilization, and embryonic development were examined. PF cows (n = 20) received a low dose of progesterone, intravagianally on Days 4-13 after pretreatment estrus (Day 0) and two injections of 20 mg prostaglandin (PG) F{dollar}\\sb{lcub}2\\alpha{rcub}{dollar}, on Day 6. Both compensation and hydrogen-related phenomenon in ZnSe grown by MBE have been systematically investigated in this study. Atomic hydrogen is demonstrated to effectively clean GaAs substrates for subsequent growth of ZnSe by molecular beam epitaxy. Significant reduction of micro-defects in both undoped and nitrogen doped ZnSe is achieved using atomic hydrogen cleaning of GaAs substrate prior to ZnSe growth without any other treatment. The density of stacking faults in ZnSe is less than {dollar}\\rm1\imes10\\sp4\\ cm\\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}{dollar} in layers grown with atomic hydrogen cleaning, while it is greater than {dollar}\\rm1\imes10\\sp7\\ cm\\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}{dollar} in layers grown with conventional thermal cleaning. The long-term filtration behavior of six nonwoven geotextiles with fly ash from two different power plants was investigated. Five specimen preparation techniques were evaluated: Dry Method, ASTM Method (D 5101-90), Modified ASTM Method, Slurry Method, and Vibro-Prep. ASTM Procedure was modified. Vibro-Prep is a new technique to prepare specimens at higher density to simulate filtration behavior of nonwoven geotextiles in the field. In addition, a method was developed for testing of geotextiles under high hydraulic gradient (HHG). HHG method is an expedient technique to assess the long-term filtration behavior of geotextiles. This study examined the relationship between middle school principals' perceptions of the linkage patterns of their schools with the district office and the perceived degree of key middle level practices implementation by the school. To examine this relationship, the Survey of Middle Level Education was designed using measures related to the work of Fullan (1991) and Louis and Niles (1990) regarding change implementation in schools. Many parents need support and intervention from the community to realize their essential role as their young children's primary teachers. Home visitation is one type of family support program that supplies that need. Although some measurable outcomes for children and parents in such programs have been noted, the dynamics of the action between the catalyst for development, the family educator, and family members cannot be measured quantitatively.
