A procedure based loosely on Ferster's 1953 study was developed to examine the effects of progressively delayed reinforcement on keypecking in pigeons. The main procedure combined progressive schedule components with delayed reinforcement so that delays separating responses from food delivery were incremented after each successive reinforcer. Three experiments were conducted to describe behavior under these progressive contingencies. Experiment 1 examined the effects of imposing progressive delays on variable-interval and fixed-interval schedules while controlling for the simultaneous decreases in reinforcer rate. The present study examined biases in diagnosing, treating, and conceptualizing PTSD based on clinician variables, such as theoretical orientation, and patient population characteristics, such as type of trauma, patient gender, and patient age. Surveys were mailed to members of APA and AABT containing case descriptions of a child sexual abuse victim, an adult rape survivor, and a Vietnam combat veteran, each meeting criteria for PTSD, and five questions requesting: (a) working diagnoses, (b) target symptoms, (c) treatment goals, (d) recommendations for treatment, and (e) etiology. Evaluating The Clinical Utility Of The Brief Symptom Inventory, The Symptom Checklist-90-R, And The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 In A Crisis Unit., Ronald L. Rielly

Convergent and discriminant validity for the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised and the Brief Symptom Inventory were examined for a population of 184 crisis residential unit admissions. Correlations were obtained with analogous and nonanalogous scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2. Significant correlations were discussed in terms of convergent and discriminant validity. A cluster analysis was performed separately for scale scores from each of the instruments to determine if homogenous groups of crisis unit residents could be identified. This study was conducted to determine whether (1) silica particles induce morphological transformation in BALB/c 3T3 cells, (2) the transforming activity of silica is related to particle size, (3) silica-transformed cells possess pre-neoplastic properties, (4) an association exists between silica-induced cell transformation and proto-oncogene activation or tumor suppressor gene inactivation. BALB/c cells were treated with 3 particle-size distributions of quartz (Min-U-Sil 5, Min-U-Sil 10, and Min-U-Sil 30; U.S. Silica Company) in a transformation assay. The purpose of the present study was to examine differences in infants' negative reactivity and use of regulation strategies during states of wakefulness and fatigue. Despite progress in building a theoretical foundation for the development of emotion regulation, studies designed to support current theories have only recently emerged in the literature. Moreover, researchers have not addressed how an infant's ability to manage negative reactivity changes based on current state of arousal. Objective. To develop a targeting delivery system for lung cancer prevention and treatment using tumor cells as the drug carrier. Methods. Doxorubicin has been loaded into B16-F10 murine melanoma. This drug-loaded tumor cell system (DLTC) has been characterized, and its anticancer activity evaluated on C57BL/6J mice bearing pulmonary B16-F10 melanoma. Results. Up to 96 {dollar}\\rm\\mu g{dollar} of doxorubicin could be loaded into {dollar}10\\sp6{dollar} cells. The release of drug from the DLTC was both cell concentration and temperature dependent. Over a six-month storage at {dollar}\\rm 4\\sp\\circ C,{dollar} there was a 25% loss of intracellular drug and 8% loss of the carrier …

This study examined arbitrator characteristics (gender and experience) case characteristics (grievant gender, attorney representation for the grievant, single versus multiple grievants, and timeliness) and case determination (denied/granted) from level-four third-party public-sector higher education discipline and discharge arbitration cases at the West Virginia Education and State Employees Grievance Board years 1985-1995. The population was 55 (N = 55). A QA4 database diskette was obtained from the Board containing case synopses from 1985 to 1995. Bank lending can have an important influence on local economic development. Banks have competing obligations, however, which compel them to look carefully at the riskiness of particular assets. This research addresses both lending risk assessment and the link between risk and lending by deriving risk measures based on industry mixes and testing whether differences in risk in local markets affect asset allocation. The research is both theoretical and empirical. The theoretical model of lending is based upon imperfect markets, risk aversion, and cost differentials. Several parameters, both quantitative and qualitative, ought to be considered while designing roll forming tools, such as section geometry, material properties of the product, number of forming stages, operation sequence, mill parameters and roll profiles. This study investigated the effects of readers theatre on the oral reading ability, oral reading comprehension, and attitudes toward reading of second grade Title 1 reading students. A total of 27 students involved in the study comprised five Title 1 reading classes in two neighboring public school districts in southwestern Pennsylvania. The two school districts served a similar low-to-middle class area population, predominately Caucasian. This series of experiments investigated whether a history of reinforcement for following or not following rules under different stimulus conditions leads to differential sensitivity to changes in contingencies under those stimulus conditions. Subjects were provided with instructions in the presence of a yellow stimulus that positively corresponded with both fixed ratio (FR) and differential reinforcement of low rates (DRL) schedules of reinforcement. Procedure development for welding of thin section (1-4mm) aluminum, using Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding (PGMAW) requires considerable understanding of the process physics. Selection of ideal pulse parameters for different joint designs is a non-trivial task. Several aspects of the process were studied, in order to have a better fundamental understanding of the process. Welding was conducted using 1.2 mm diameter 4047 aluminum electrode and argon shielding gas. Motility and chemotaxis have been considered as important candidates for the study of virulence in many pathogenic spirochetes, including B. burgdorferi. Little is known about the underlying mechanisms of motility and chemotaxis. In this study, we have carried out an extensive search for the motility and chemotaxis genes in B. burgdorferi. The unique technique of "semi-random PCR chromosome walking" was developed and used to clone several large motility and chemotaxis gene clusters. Two models, the Overhead Allocation Model and the Bidding Strategies Model, were constructed to explore the implications of activity-based costing on bidding strategies. The Overhead Allocation Model simulates the two step overhead allocation method of activity-based costing. The problem of this study was to determine if decision styles of knowledge workers could predict a level of creativity and/or an orientation toward risk of knowledge workers. A biographical survey and two self-scoring instruments were administered to each subject. The first instrument, Decision Style Inventory (DSI) by Alan Rowe and Richard Mason classified the subjects according to four basic decision styles: directive, analytical, conceptual and behavioral. Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by reversible airway obstruction and nonspecific airway hyperreactivity. Recent evidence suggests that inflammation is a critical feature in the pathogenesis of asthma. Central to the genesis of inflammation is the presentation of antigens to T lymphocytes. Dendritic cells (DC) are antigen presenting cells that activate T lymphocytes thought to play a critical role in stimulating antigen-induced airway inflammation and hyperreactivity in asthma. The intent of this naturalistic inquiry was to provide information about Appalachian women and the community college. The qualitative interview was used to investigate the students perception about their community college experience. The interview yielded data related to the students motivations for attending and persisting in higher education. High altitude operation of internal combustion engines requires multiple stages of turbo-compression to maintain sea level density at the engine intake to maintain rated power. Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation has selected a set of automotive turbo-compressor components for the Rotax engine chosen for high altitude performance of the Theseus aircraft. Prior to construction and testing, Aurora predicted the system performance by power and RPM matching, using factory component performance data in the form of a spreadsheet. They concluded that their system could be controlled by a single wastegate control over the entire design altitude range of the Theseus aircraft. The …

There is a substantial body of literature examining the role of interest groups and their influence in the policy process. What is less clear is the decision-making process of groups in selecting strategies to advance their goals and how the choice of tactics impacts the behavior of other groups within the policy area. This dissertation examines what influences the choice of lobbying strategies in an attempt to understand whether certain types of groups favor particular strategies, how they use the policy process to influence policy decisions, and how successful they are in their choice of strategy.
