Bird populations and forest vegetation were monitored before (1984-86), during (1987-88) and after (1989-96) a gypsy moth outbreak and subsequent defoliations at the Sleepy Creek Public Hunting and Fishing Area in Morgan and Berkeley Counties, West Virginia. The objective of this study was to examine how gypsy moth defoliation affected forest vegetation, and how changes in forest structure and composition affected bird populations and the nesting ecology of four bird species. Repeated defoliations killed many overstory trees (primarily oaks, Quercus spp.), opening the forest canopy and allowing vigorous growth of understory vegetation. Coal seams, in many cases, contain a foreign rock layer (commonly known as partings) and are thus in homogeneous in structural sense as opposed to the common notion of being a homogeneous body. It has also been observed in the field that for the pillars in these coal seams, which have been standing long after mining, the stability depends very much on the weathering action of the parting in the presence of mine moisture. Epidemiological studies have indicated that work involving lifting heavy objects or lifting and twisting with moderate weights can impose increased compressive, shear, and torsional stresses on a worker's lumbar spine. Current statistics indicate that musculoskeletal sprains and strains account for more than 40% of the 2.0 million lost-time work-related injuries that occurred in 1995. A multi-phased research program consisted of performance of both laboratory and field test programs, development of hydraulic conductivity probability density functions, and development of a first generation risk model to assess relative risk among groups of levees to determine rank for systemic allocation of scarce rehabilitation resources. Regulation Of The Rpos Sigma Factor In Salmonella Typhimurium By Host Factor I, A Small Rna Binding Protein Encoded By Thehfq Gene., Larissa Carol Brown

We have found that Host Factor I (HF-I), the product of the hfq gene, is required for efficient expression of the RpoS stationary phase sigma factor in Salmonella typhimurium. HF-I is an RNA-binding protein originally characterized for its role in replication of phage Q{dollar}\\beta{dollar} of E. coli. Its role in the uninfected bacterial cell has previously been unknown. Assays of {dollar}\\beta{dollar}-galactosidase in strains with rpoS-lac fusions, Western blot analysis, and pulse-labeling and immunoprecipitation of both fusion proteins and native RpoS show that an hfq mutant has a four- to seven-fold reduction in the translation of rpoS. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare perceptions of principals and teachers concerning the West Virginia mandated performance evaluation of teachers. A comparison was made of principals' and teachers' perceived current and desired evaluation practice. Then a comparison was made between principals and teachers to find any differences in perceptions. Efforts were made to find relationships between overall satisfaction and evaluation practices and between overall satisfaction and demographic variables. The comparison of two design variations of the Axial Vane Rotary Engine (AVRE) was done by evaluating several parameters. These two designs are called the Pin Cam and the Inverted Pin Cam designs. The first step involved developing a technique to determine the heat loads on the components of the engines since the engine is running at a steady state loading condition. The second step used this thermal data to get a final temperature profile. The third step combined the thermal data and the combustion data to perform a structural analysis of the engine components. Important aspects of the generation and propagation of Inhomogeneous Energy-Density Driven (IEDD) waves are reported. Some aspects confirm significant and detailed predictions from theory and some aspects reveal significant and unexpected behavior. The IEDD instability requires an inhomogeneous profile of plasma flow, which is created in these experiments by producing a radially localized radial electric field in the magnetized plasma column of the WVU Q machine. This study lists and analyzes serious intermediate piano literature written from 1940-1990. The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) it identifies pieces which could be used to introduce contemporary styles and techniques to students at the intermediate level of piano study; and (2) it contains a data base listing 418 additional pieces which may be used for further study. Bartok's Mikrokosmos is a model collection for introducing piano students to the style and performance of early twentieth-century music. This was an instrumental case study that examined the extent to which the politics of education in Tennessee that resulted in the passage of the Education Improvement Act of 1992 and related tax increases conformed to the assumptions of the Advocacy Coalition Framework as articulated by Sabatier. The membrane bound enzyme methane monooxygenase (pMMO), is a mixed function oxygenase that initiates the oxidative metabolism of methane in methanotropic bacteria. Copper is required for catalytic activity of pMMO, illustrated by the recovery of pMMO activity in EDTA-inhibited membranes, whereas zinc and nickel had little effect or were inhibitory. Inhibition kinetics, cosubstrate dependence, and substrate protection experiments show that acetylene acts as a suicide substrate for pMMO, binding specifically to a 26-kDa peptide. The acetylene binding capability of pMMO increased as a function of copper concentration as does the specific activity, suggesting that copper activates pMMO by binding to …

This study was designed to determine if 1996 high school seniors who enrolled at West Virginia University at Parkersburg in the fall of 1996 were receiving equal educational opportunity with a focus on computer access and usage. The data collection consisted of two major parts: surveying the students in the 7-county service area of WVUP and interviewing at least 5 teachers or other professional staff from among each of the 11 schools located in 7 different counties. The three chamber (3C) engine concept was evaluated using computer programs with thermodynamic emphasis. This 3C engine utilizes pistons to perform compression and expansion of the working gas. These cylinders are connected by a combustion chamber. By separating the compression and expansion processes, it is possible to have a larger expansion displacement thus introducing the displacement ratio which is the quotient of expansion to compression displacement. Initially an algebraic analysis of the air-standard cycle was completed. Although not as commonplace today, it still has significant clinical relevance. More importantly, however, is the large body of knowledge that has been generated which addresses the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of this {dollar}\\beta{dollar}-blocker. Plant species that develop resistance to one herbicide (e.g., s-triazine) may simultaneously exhibit resistance to other herbicides to which they have never been exposed. The objectives of this study were to compare the response of atrazine resistant and susceptible biotypes of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) to the herbicides alachlor (2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl-N-(methoxymethyl) acetamide), atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-{dollar}N\\sp\\prime{dollar}-(1-methyl-ethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2, 4-diamine), linuron ({dollar}N\\sp\\prime{dollar}-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-N-methoxy-N-methylurea), and metribuzin (4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5 (4H)-one). The purpose of this study is to determine if two independent raters can reliably score the Competent Learner Repertoire Assessment Level 2 (CLRA), if the CLRA is sensitive to student growth over time, and to analyze if the CLRA concurs with another adaptive behavior assessment. To answer these questions the behavior of approximately 159 preschool students in a large Southern California school district will be assessed with the CLRA. This study posits that a paradigm is a shared vision of reality that governs how practitioners define and relate to the many and varied components that make up that reality. Using this definition, the author presents a visual model using concentric spheres of increasing abstraction that rearrange T. S. Kuhn's four components of a disciplinary matrix that he articulated in the 1969 Postscript to The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Five clay minerals (Well Crystallized Kaolinite (KWC), Poorly Crystallized Kaolinite (KPC), Illite, Attapulgite, and Montmorillonite) with a range of surface characteristics were selected to investigate the adsorption of three oxyanions (molybdate, selenite, and selenate). The minerals were coated with five different levels of each of Fe and Al hydrous oxides. The charge characteristics were determined using potentiometric titration. Adsorption was studied by batch experiment at 11 different concentrations of each of the oxyanions at three different pH levels. All of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's solo piano concertos require a cadenza to be inserted ad libitum toward the end of the first movement. We have original first-movement cadenzas by Mozart for all of his concertos except K. 466, 467, 482, 491, 503, and 537. For these six, there are two viable solutions to the cadenza problem: the performer can either provide his own cadenza or select a cadenza written by someone else. This dissertation is composed of two topics that share the focus of placental vascular tone control. In the first investigations, we looked at the effect of caffeine (Caff; 10nmol/L-10{dollar}\\mu{dollar}mol/L), nicotine (Nic), and cotinine (Cot) (1nmol/L-100{dollar}\\mu{dollar}mol/L for both) administration on isolated placental blood vessels, to see if these substances altered placental vascular tone. We found that moderate relaxations were initiated by all three alkaloids in precontracted placental blood vessels. We also found that pretreatment of placental blood vessels and Caff, Nic, and Cot did not alter responses to a variety of contractile agents. In conclusion, it would seem that the adverse …
