A significant proportion of clients utilizing substance abuse programs fail to successfully complete a course of treatment. High attrition rates represent a large number of clients who do not receive the full benefit of treatment. Both clients and treatment programs are adversely affected by premature termination. The present research focused on prediction of discharge status from residential substance abuse rehabilitation. A discriminant function analysis resulted in a prediction equation which incorporated nine sociodemographic variables. This equation correctly classified the discharge status of 67% of the prediction sample of 252 subjects. The equation was cross validated in a stratified random sample …

Myelin associated glycoprotein (MAG) plays an important role in myelinogenesis, nerve plasticity and nerve regeneration. Hence, knowledge of how this gene is regulated may be essential for developing clinical strategies, e.g., to promote regeneration in the injured spinal cord. We employed the primer extension technique for mapping MAG gene transcription start sites. The analysis revealed 13 transcription start sites spanning 72 bp. No canonical TATA box and no known transcription initiator (Inr) sequences that position transcription complex in other TATA-less promoters were found. The goal of this work was to determine how polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) affect gene expression at the molecular level. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a member of the family of lipogenic enzymes known to be inhibited by dietary PUFAs. Addition of PUFAs to diet causes a 70-80% decrease in G6PD enzyme activity and mRNA accumulation in liver with no change in transcriptional activity of the gene, indicating that regulation occurs at a posttranscriptional step. Similarly, regulation of G6PD by starvation and refeeding results in a 12- to 15-fold increase in G6PD activity and mRNA accumulation but no change in transcriptional …

Mental health professionals are increasingly examining psychosocial issues of individuals with medical illnesses. Research has demonstrated that when the medical patient is a parent, the entire family experiences the crisis and impact of the diagnosis and treatment. Despite these findings, few studies have examined the impact of a parental life-threatening illness on children. The psychological and behavioral adjustment of children with a parent receiving a bone marrow transplant (BMT) was compared to that of children in a matched community group. Cooperative learning can be a powerful instructional tool used to increase lecture comprehension and retention. Scripting cooperative activities according to cognitive learning principles can further increase effectiveness. This study investigated the use of a cooperative learning script based on a learning strategy called "Smart Questioning." Following lecture, college students participated in scripted activities according to one of five conditions: Cooperative Smart Questioning, Individual Smart Questioning, Cooperative Control, Individual Control, and Guided Questioning. Two tests of lecture comprehension (immediate and delayed) acted as dependent measures. Subjective and ideal age were studied in middle-aged and older adults. Subjective age (SA), or how old a person perceives him- or herself to be, has been studied in older adults for over 40 years. Yet, many questions remain concerning what variables contribute to SA, the meaning of SA, and age-group and gender differences in SA. Ideal age (IA), or the age that one perceives to be ideal, has been studied considerably less than SA, and the same questions exist with respect to it. The low processivity of retroviral reverse transcriptase and the lack of exonucleolytic proofreading by retroviral reverse trascriptase contribute to the emergence of virus variants in infected hosts. A result of the low processivity of reverse transcriptase is the high frequency deletion of direct repeats in retroviral genomes and vectors. We determined that direct repeats of 383, 788, and 1333 base pairs delete at rates of 28-40, 85, and 93%, respectively, in one round of retroviral replication. This study's central purpose is to provide information that can be used to help understand and, thus, increase U.S. exports of poultry products. It emphasizes international broiler market responsiveness to U.S. export prices, the impact of currency realignments on imports from the U.S. (exchange rate impacts), per capita incomes of importing countries, the prices of substitutes, and government interventions in poultry markets. This dissertation investigates an explanation for the high failure rate among depository institutions during 1980s and early 1990s. The moral hazard hypothesis contends that, in the presence of deposit insurance, banks have an incentive to acquire riskier assets than they should because insured depositors, secure in the knowledge that their funds are safe in any event, will not penalize the institution by withdrawing their funds or requiring that a risk premium be added to the rates paid on their deposits. Numerical modelling simulations of two dimensional tube extrusion and three dimensional tube pilgering reduction of nickel-base alloys were conducted using a commercial finite element code, DEFORM{dollar}\\sp{lcub}\\rm TM{rcub}{dollar}. Accuracy of the finite element modelling results was verified quantitatively by comparing solid extrusion simulation results with experimental data. An interface frictional coefficient was also examined and the best fit was selected for the simulation. As expected, heat loss of the extruded material was found to be significant due to temperature-dependent material properties of the alloy. This paper examines retiree recruitment as a strategy in state economic development policy. The study employs a theoretical framework of policy adoption and lesson-drawing to answer the questions (1) why would a state adopt the policy of retiree recruitment and (2) how is the policy adopted. Three states in different stages of retiree recruitment policy adoption were selected as case studies. Results show that different strategies in policy adoption were operating in each case study state. The objective of this research was to determine if the use of Simplified English (SE) improved task comprehension of non-native English speaking aviation maintenance technician students in a non-English speaking environment. A background questionnaire, one test, and four controlled language instruments were administered to each subject. The test, Accuracy Level Test (ALT) by Ronald P. Carver, measured the Spanish subjects English reading ability by grade level. Over the same period, we have also seen the birth and demise of incrementalism as a comprehensive theory of budgetary politics. The rat tracheal epithelial (RTE) cell transformation assays (by both in vitro and in vivo exposure) were used to study the potential pulmonary carcinogenesis of diesel emission particles (DEPs) and two diesel-related compounds, 1-nitropyrene (1-NP) and dibenzo(a,i)pyrene (DBP). An anchorage-independent growth and the tumorigenicity study in athymic nude mice were used to determine the neoplastic potential of the transformed RTE cell lines. Amplification of proto-oncogenes K-ras, c-jun, c-fos and c-myc was determined in the cell lines by differential polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Stimulation of malic enzyme transcription by triiodothyronine (T3) is robust ({dollar}>{dollar}60-fold) in chick embryo hepatocytes, weak (5-fold) in chick embryo fibroblasts that stably overexpress the nuclear T3 receptor-{dollar}\\alpha,{dollar} and still weaker (1-fold) in chick embryo fibroblasts which contain nuclear T3 receptor levels that are similar to those of CEH. Directed by the DNase I hypersensitive regions in the malic enzyme gene, functional transfection and in vitro DNA-binding analyses were performed and four cis-acting elements were identified in the malic enzyme 5{dollar}\\sp\\prime{dollar}-flanking DNA. Even though the American Psychological Association has formally endorsed that appropriately trained psychologists be afforded prescriptive authority (APA, 1996b, 1996c), this issue continues to be divisive within the profession. In an attempt to further assess disagreement between psychologists regarding this issue as well as explore areas of agreement, a two round Delphi study was used to predict the probability and desirability of specific occurrences if prescriptive authority is obtained within the next 10 years. The instrument for data collection was a descriptive opinion survey, consisting of two questions, that was sent to all U.S. school of pharmacy deans (n = 79). The present investigation was based on operant theory. A prospective six-week self-monitoring design was utilized to examine naturally-occurring reinforcing and punishing effects of cardiovascular exercise in a college-aged sample of healthy women. The sample consisted of exercise initiators ({dollar}{dollar}6 months of regular exercise). Seven rewarding exercise effects emerged from factor analysis of the self-monitoring form (i.e., mood improvement, goal achievement, physical performance enhancement, exercise "high", praise from others, social affiliation, and appearance changes). Results indicated that both groups produced similar ratings for the exercise reward factors, but some factors were significantly more rewarding than others to the sample as a …

This equipment has primarily been developed for enforcement and security applications, such as monitoring parking garages or border crossings. This study posed the following questions: (a) Does error-detection instruction improve students' confidence levels and/or reduce anxiety? (b) Do students find error-detection instruction helpful? (c) Do students' methods and awareness of error detection change after instruction? and (d) Does age, sex, math background or personality influence attitudes toward errors and error detection? College developmental algebra students received error-detection instruction during a semester-long beginning algebra course. The purpose of this study was to determine if spatial intelligence contributes to a student's success in a computer science major or if mathematical-logical intelligence is sufficient data on which to base a prediction of success. This study examined the relationship between mother-daughter attachment relationships and their reactions to conflict and other emotional exchanges. Fifteen young adults ("young generation" daughters), thirty middle-aged adults (15 "middle generation" mothers and 15 "middle generation" daughters), and fifteen older adults ("older generation" mothers) were assessed for the quality of their attachment to each other as well as their attachment to a romantic partner. Participants viewed a videotape in which a female actor, representing the participating family member, engaged in various emotional discussions (positive, neutral & negative). Clomipramine (CLI) administered to neonatal rats has been purported to induce behavioral abnormalities in adulthood analogous to human endogenous depression (Vogel et al., 1990). This dissertation deals with the design of decentralized estimators for large scale interconnected systems. The systems are composed of several subsystems interconnected together. At each subsystem level a filter is designed to estimate local and/or interface variables. Kalman filtering and H{dollar}\\infty{dollar} filtering tools are used to derive decentralized estimators based on two different approaches namely, direct and indirect methods. A power system application is used to illustrate the proposed algorithms. In each method the decentralized filter design requires a subsystem model (local model) and a set of measurements. The Tonoloway Limestone (Pridolian) represents a large part of the Siluro-Devonian carbonate interval present throughout most of the central Appalachian Basin. The depositional evolution of this unit is documented in detail on a regional scale using a basin analysis approach which combines facies analysis with applied sequence stratigraphy. Overall results show that deposition occurred over 1-3Ma in an epeiric seaway which changed briefly into a ramp-open shelf-lagoon transition. Results of sequence stratigraphic analysis show that the upper two-thirds to three-fourths of the Tonoloway records one complete Type I depositional sequence (S1), which contains a Lowstand Systems Tract followed upward by …
