Burnout And Depression Among Roman Catholic Secular, Religious, And Monastic Clergy., Stephen Gerard Virginia

Burnout and depression among Roman Catholic secular, religious order, and monastic (Cistercian) priests was investigated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. Additionally, a Self-Report-Inventory was included (SRI) requesting information on demographics as well as four categories of predictor variables (vocational satisfaction, social support, spiritual activities, and physical environment) associated with burnout and depression. All participants were randomly selected from the National Catholic Director. The survey yielded a return rate of 90.67% with 63.11% completing the survey. Secular clergy reported significantly greater emotional exhaustion than did monastic clergy. Secular priests also had significantly …

Cell Cycle Regulation Of Redoxyendonuclease Activity In Human Neuroblastoma Cells., Deepika Walpita

Redoxyendonuclease activity was detected in extracts of human neuroblastoma cells using a base-release assay specific for thymine glycol in DNA. The level of redoxyendonuclease activity was more than 2-fold higher in dividing cells compared to quiescent cells, suggesting that quiescent cells may have a reduced capacity to repair oxidative DNA base damages. Cells were synchronized by serum deprivation and then stimulated to enter the cell cycle by the addition of serum to determine enzyme activity at different stages of the cell cycle. Old newspaper (ONP) is the largest single component (14%) of total U.S. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The rising problems associated with disposal of MSW in landfills can be dealt with if the volume of the waste stream is reduced by recycling. The wastepaper recycling market, in particular ONP, has not been successful in utilizing the ONP generated. The existence of high sunk costs for entry into deinking market, along with the small numbers of buyers in the ONP market were identified as reasons that the ONP market had oligopsony elements. It was the aim of this dissertation to determine if and how religiousness in family members caring for relatives suffering from dementia affects the mental health of family caregivers. To that end two theories were presented for testing in the form of path models. These theories were based on stress-process cognitive theory as adapted to the dementia caregiver situation. In this theory caregiver strain (mental distress) was thought to be mediated by cognitive appraisal, and appraisal to be influenced by contextual characteristics, personal and family resources, and stressors. Using a four step phenomenological approach for inquiry, the researcher explored and interpreted data obtained from the lived experiences of sixteen perimenopausal women and eight health care providers living in rural areas. A purposive sampling technique was utilized. Participation was on a voluntary basis. Data collection procedures included a face-to-face semi-structured taped interview and completion of a demographic questionnaire. Following analysis of the data, twenty-two common essences were identified from intuiting of the interview data. The chicken very low density apolipoprotein II (apoVLDLII) gene encodes an egg yolk protein that is synthesized in the liver in response to estrogen. Regulation of this gene is mediated by the estrogen receptor via two estrogen response elements (EREs) located in the promoter. Following the administration of estrogen, there is a four hour lag period prior to the detection of apoVLDLII mRNA. To examine the events that occur during this lag period, in vivo footprinting and run-on transcription assays were performed. Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are one of the most common types of trauma experienced in this country. Recent studies have reported that approximately 30% to 50% of adult victims of MVAs experience severe and lingering distress following moderate to severe accidents. The present study examined the effects of MVAs on non-head-injured school-aged children. Point-source application of fine-grained limestone aggregate in seven acidic tributaries of Shavers Fork, West Virginia, resulted in increases in pH, acid neutralizing capacity, and dissolved calcium:hydrogen ion ratio (DCa:H), and decreases in monomeric aluminum (Al{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}).{dollar} In streams affected by atmospheric acid deposition, the increase was large enough to consistently maintain the DCa:H ratio above the critical threshold for trout survival. The most effective method of treatment was found to be the annual application of sand-size aggregate at a single point source using enough limestone to neutralize double the annual acid load. Second, analyses were conducted to determine whether specific variables differentiated between participants' patterns of treatment preferences. This study evaluated the effects of behavioral parent training and problem-solving skills training on the behaviors of adolescents with conduct disorders (N = 20, ages 13-17) who were all attending a private day school for children with behavior problems. Parents and adolescents were assigned to 1 of 4 conditions: behavioral parent training (parent-only), problem solving skills training (adolescent-only), a combination of the two (parent-adolescent), or a no intervention, waiting-list control group. Antinociceptive and nociceptive responses can be elicited by the administration of endorphin within the periaqueductal gray region of the midbrain. The pain inhibitory and facilitory systems exist in a state of balance such that under most conditions, the combined activation of these processes by the administration of -endorphin results in the expression of antinociception. However, during other situations, such as stress, the delicate balance between these endogenous systems is disrupted and alterations in the overall response to opioids occurs. The technique involved the injection of a tracer at the inlet and the observation of the corresponding response at the sampling zone of the tunnel. In this thesis we study two cases of the hydrodynamic model of semiconductors: the nonisentropic case for one species and the isentropic case for two species. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the asymptotic stability of the steady state solutions for these two cases. First we show the existence of a one-parameter family of steady state solutions. Each steady state solution is uniquely determined by the momentum. Then, we prove that every steady state solution is asymptotically stable. The clinical conceptualization of body-image distortion among persons with eating disorders typically emphasizes sensory disturbances and de-emphasizes nonsensory, environmental variables. The present study examined body-size misperceptions using a signal detection paradigm in 20 women with bulimia and 20 women without present symptomology or history of an eating disorder. First, subjects estimated their body sizes using a video distortion camera. Second, each subject judged how similar or dissimilar each of 192 distorted and undistorted images was to her actual body size using a 5-point rating scale. This study examined the relationship between selected administrator characteristics and administrative ratings of the importance of teacher evaluation criteria. Specifically, the characteristics of gender, age, teaching experience, administrative experience, and conservatism were investigated. To examine the research question, a three-part study instrument was designed using the selected characteristics, the McClosky Conservatism Scale and items from the West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310: Performance Evaluation of School Personnel (1992). Twenty-three (23) incarcerated male adolescent sex offenders participated in structured interviews about their experiences as both victims and perpetrators of sexual assault. Data were analyzed for indications that some perpetrators use their offenses to reenact their victimization experiences in an effort to achieve mastery over their own sexual traumata. Data were also evaluated for evidence of differential victimization histories by molesters and rapists. Significant relationships were found between victimization and offense experiences, including the selection by offenders of victims who were the same race as the perpetrators against them, the recurrence in offenses of two types of sexual activity--simulated intercourse …

A non-deterministic approach to engineering problem solving is developed, with the emphasis on the effects of manufacturing and service uncertainties on selected performance characteristics and economic factors. This study examined individual differences in young children's social-cognition and potential correlates in the domains of family experiences and social skills. Three measures of family characteristics were collected (Self-Expressiveness in the Family Questionnaire; Conflict Tactics Scale, & the Marital Adjustment Test), along with three measures reflecting children's social-cognitive development and understanding of emotions (false belief understanding, empathy, and ability to label others' emotions). Teacher ratings of children's peer interactions and coping skills were also collected. Significant research literature supports the view that a couple's ability to resolve conflicts has a large impact on the stability of the relationship and the satisfaction of the members of the couple. Few studies have been conducted, however, to determine the relationships among the intrapersonal and interpersonal variables that affect the dynamics of conflict, in long-term couples. The prison reformers and fiction writers of post-Revolutionary Philadelphia wrote prodigiously about crime and punishment. In a correlative study, I explore juridical topoi in reformist and fictive texts familiar to republican Philadelphians. My analysis assumes a public sphere of writers and readers: while late eighteenth-century prison reforms and fictions came out of separate signifying systems, there was considerable promiscuity between them. I group areas of overlap around cultural concerns (science, murder, sex) and representational "spaces" (home, prison, nation). In either discourse, crime and punishment were useful to a post-Revolutionary aesthetic of nationalism. The scientific rhetoric of penitentiary punishment targeted the …

Subsurface study of Permian evaporites and related strata in the Denver basin reveals that the present distribution of salt has been influenced by a number of depositional and post-depositional controls. Correlations across the basin have identified 13 stratigraphic intervals that, in places, are salt-bearing. Upper Wolfcampian and lower Leonardian salts accumulated in paleolows (Alliance and Sterling evaporite basins and the "Garden County low") which were bounded by low-relief positive features associated with the Transcontinental arch, the Ancestral Chadron arch, and the Ancestral Las Animas arch. In this study the longitudinal and lateral-directional stability derivatives are estimated from flight data using the Maximum Likelihood method coupled with a Newton-Raphson minimization technique. The estimated aerodynamic model describes the aircraft dynamics over a range of angle of attack from 10{dollar}\\sp\\circ{dollar} to 60{dollar}\\sp\\circ{dollar}. Monte Carlo Studies Of Instabilities In Solids Under External Strains And Stresses., Anatoli M. Peredera

We use dynamical Monte Carlo simulations to investigate instabilities of solids in the presence of externally applied stresses or strains. One of the instabilities is the classical Euler buckling instability of compressed rods. We address, for the first time, the dynamical aspects of this instability, that is, we study how an initially straight flexible chain reaches the final buckled configuration at long times. We find that this process has much in common with coarsening phenomena such as the spinodal decomposition or unstable mound growth in molecular beam epitaxy.
