Escalating drug costs and advent of managed care led WV Medicaid to implement the prior authorization policy for anti-ulcer medications (18% of 1994 expenditures). The study's purpose was to determine the policy's effect on utilization and expenditures of anti-ulcer medications and healthcare services such as inpatient hospitalizations, physician and outpatient hospital services (Phase I). The study also assessed the policy's effect on Medicaid recipient outcomes (Phase II). For Phase I, 36 months of Medicaid paid claims data (20 months pre-policy and 16 months post-policy) were analyzed for continuously eligible non-Medicare recipients. This study examined the relationship between grievant variables (case description, case issue, gender, seriousness of the case) and case determination (denied/granted). A disk copy of QA4 database years 1985 to 1995 was provided by the West Virginia Education and State Employees Grievance Board. The approximate 222 higher education synopses reports were read to locate the population. Fifty-five higher education discipline and discharge synopsis reports were isolated. Key words used by the Board assisted in isolating the population. Morphological plasticity of astrocytes has been hypothesized as vital to ongoing plasticity in the adult central nervous system. However, it has yet to be demonstrated directly that astrocytes are capable of gross morphological changes under non-pathological circumstances in the adult nervous system. In our studies, we have investigated this issue in the glial limitans associated with a well-known model of neuronal plasticity, the hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus. The activity of the neuroendocrine cells comprising this region was stimulated in rats by substitution of 2% saline for drinking water for 2 or 9 days. The National Aero-Space Plane (NASP) was conceptually designed for flight at hypersonic speeds. Because its airframe configuration was determined by the need for good high-speed flight performance, its low-speed and ground effect characteristics were poor. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the ground effect aerodynamic performance of a two-dimensional model of the NASP with thrust simulation. This study included a comparison between experimental and numerical results. The experiments were conducted in the WVU subsonic wind tunnel, while numerical results were obtained using FLUENT, a commercial finite volume CFD code. This study was designed to investigate the relationships between early and middle school principals' leadership style and school culture, controlling for demographics including: enrollment, school type, age, gender, years experience and county. The sample population for principal's leadership style was faculty from 97 early and middle schools, in one district from each of the eight West Virginia regions. Each principal of the same schools was surveyed for demographic data. This study was designed to examine the relationships between the method of selection and length of service of department chairs and degree of faculty support as measured by the Department Evaluation of Chairperson Activities for Development (Decad) instrument. The database contains rankings of all chairs (n = 1312) rated with the Decad from 1977-1991. The database contains departmental evaluations from over 120 institutions located throughout the United States and Canada. The objective of this research was to determine if endothelin is a mediator of hexachloro-1,3-butadiene (HCBD)-induced acute renal failure. The nephrotoxicity associated with HCBD is acute tubular necrosis (ATN). HCBD-induced ATN is characterized by a decrease in renal blood flow (RBF), mediating a decline in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), polyuria, glucosuria, proteinuria and natriuresis. These effects on the kidney are mimicked by the endogenous peptide endothelin. Endothelin is produced by many different cell types and is the most potent endogenous vasoconstrictor peptide identified to date. The renal vasculature is particularly sensitive to the vasoconstrictive action of endothelin. Endothelin causes …

This study was conducted in the Monongahela National Forest of West Virginia during the summers of 1995 and 1996 to assess the influence of two-age and clearcut timber management practices on breeding songbirds and invertebrates. Examination by guild (nesting, foraging, habitat, migratory) revealed little difference in breeding bird abundance among harvested and unharvested treatments, this is presumably due to the developmental stage of the harvested treatments (9-15-years post-harvest). Parasitism rates by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) were generally low (8.66%). Most parasitized nests, however, were associated with two-age stands or the uncut forest adjacent to these stands. Cowbirds appeared to use …

This study was designed to examine the relationship between the self-perceived preferred brain hemispheric processing of West Virginia public school superintendents and their self-perceived leadership styles. Respondents completed the Hermann Brain Dominance Profile, the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, and a demographic sheet. Data were analyzed using the General Linear Model of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). Two hypotheses guided the study. Shallow seismic investigations were conducted at two sites in the Central Appalachian foreland area of West Virginia. Various seismic sources (EWG, primacord, shotgun, and sledge hammer) were used and compared. At one site, data were collected to investigate the effect of longwall mining on the overburden seismic properties. Expanded spread and common offset (CO) data were collected over active panels at different stages of mining. At a second site, EWG is evaluated using common midpoint (CMP) and CO sorting. Many small communities located in rural areas of the United States lack adequate domestic wastewater treatment plants. Constructed wetlands are being promoted as low-cost, low-maintenance systems for treatment of domestic wastewater in areas where standard septic tanks fail. In order to evaluate the efficacy of small constructed wetlands, 20 small-scale wetlands mesocosms (100 gal each) containing five plant treatments (no plants/control, Typha, Scirpus, and Juncus monocultures, and all three species combined) were planted into pea gravel at either 18 or 24 inches in depth. A Cumulative Strategies Model for drug abuse prevention employs a process by which two or more drug abuse prevention strategies are used conjointly, such that each strategy targets two or more factors that place children at high risk for drug abuse. This model was examined using an innovative multiple component program called CHOICES. Using a combination of in-vitro and in-vivo experimental techniques, the maturational changes in arteriolar structure and blood flow regulation were explored in the spinotrapezius muscle of weanling, juvenile and mature rats. In the first study, morphometric analysis of the arteriolar network architecture revealed that mean arcade segment length and arcade loop circumference had significantly increased from weanling to mature groups, whereas total number of arcade arteriole segments remained fairly constant. The number of transverse arteriole subnetworks per muscle remained constant from weanling to mature rats, but there were significant increases in total number of vessels in each branch order, total …

This was a qualitative study designed to explore how women at various stages of lesbian identity development manage and make decisions about managing their identities. Management of identity was explored in terms of how women came out or stayed hidden and how they made decisions to both disclose and conceal. It used Cass' (1979) Stage Allocation Measure, based on her model of homosexual identity development, as a means to categorize women at various stages of lesbian identity development. By coupling the standard reaction-diffusion equations with the hydrodynamic equations, we study the convection patterns in chemical reactions. We investigate the onset of convection and the transition of convection patterns induced by compositional density gradients of chemical wave propagations in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction and the iodate-arsenous acid reaction through direct numerical simulations. We find that in a vertical slab the chemical wave causes the onset of convection above a critical point. The convective flows deform the chemical concentration patterns as well as enhance chemical wave propagation speed. Propanil (3,4-dichloropropionanilide) is a herbicide that is used for post-emergence control of weeds on rice, wheat, and potato production in the United States. The first hypothesis of our study is: propanil significantly inhibits cytokine production by macrophages which may contribute to its overall immunotoxicity. We demonstrate that i.p. propanil exposure significantly inhibited IL-6, TNF-{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} and IL-1{dollar}\\beta{dollar} production by macrophages. Acute oral exposure with propanil demonstrates that both 3 and 7 day post-exposure cytokine production by macrophages was reduced. However, only 7 day post-exposure with the primary metabolite of propanil, 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), resulted in the inhibition of cytokine production. Therefore, we …

Three general categories were examined: family/career conflict, professional representation, and gender discrimination. This study was designed to identify the role expectations, reporting hierarchy, years in role and trends in human resource development (HRD) as reported by the person responsible for HRD in small, private colleges and universities within the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) geographic area. The population for this study was all the four-year, small, private schools in Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) states (N = 200). Large volumes of spent oil-in-water emulsions are produced in the metal-working industry. The treatment of oily wastewaters with conventional membrane separation technologies is limited by the low permeate flux observed at high oil concentrations due to difficulty pumping concentrated solutions at high recirculation velocities. In the high-shear rotary ultrafiltration (UF) unit, disk membranes are rotated at speeds up to 1,750 rpm to generate hydraulic turbulence which scours the membrane surface.
