Research has shown that both pausing and escape are controlled jointly by past and upcoming conditions of reinforcement. The present research was designed to investigate the contextual variables that influence pausing and escape on FI schedules and to assess further the functional similarities between pausing and escape. It was of particular interest that the effects of past events have been observed long after they had been removed from the environment of the organism. The article is a report of a qualitative study to determine whether Presidents of West Virginia higher education institutions maintain attitudes commensurate with goal statements contained in Senate Bill 547: a West Virginia legislative initiative that requires institutional compliance with various legislated goals. Findings of the study are presented in a brief, case study format for each President. In addition, a global assessment of Presidential perceptions with associated issues of compliance/noncompliance is presented.

Aretas Brooks Fleming (1839–1923) businessman and Democratic party boss came from a prominent Fairmont family with extensive political connections throughout the region. He was not rich, but was well born, and able and followed the Virginia tradition of marrying well. He used an extensive kinship network, which was a community unto itself, to build a successful law practice and to start his climb up the political ladder. Fleming's dedication brought both political and business success, as he served in the West Virginia legislature and then judge of the second judicial circuit of West Virginia. The purpose of these studies were to identify the sites of changes in the {dollar}\\alpha\\sb1{dollar}-adrenoceptor signal transduction cascade responsible for a specific supersensitivity to norepinephrine (NE) that develops in the mesenteric arterial vascular bed from Dahl salt-sensitive rats (DS) maintained on a high salt diet (HS) for five days or three weeks as compared to Dahl salt-resistant rats (DR). Perfusion studies using the isolated perfused superior mesenteric arterial vascular bed from five day DSHS and DRHS rats and nifedipine, an L-type calcium channel blocker, were performed to assess tissue reliance on extracellular calcium for contraction. Computer telephony applications potential is impressive, however telephony applications implementation is exceptionally challenging. This work was initiated as a result of several disappointing previous attempts to incorporate telephony capabilities into a graphical application building environment which features the use of reusable software components. This presentation includes working code for an illustrative telephony application (a terminal emulator). A detailed implementation for the JavaBeans application implementation environment is developed and presented. The JavaBeans environment is representative of graphical application building environments which feature the use of reusable software components. Ants in the George Washington (Augusta Co. VA, USA) and Monongahela National Forests (Pocahontas Co. WV, USA) were studied using pitfall traps and bait traps to assess the effect of Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki (Foray 48F) and gypsy moth nuclear polyhedrosis virus (Gypchek) application on ant communities and the association of habitat characteristics with ants. Ant samples were also compared by forest, sampling year and season, sampling method, and sampling micro-habitat. Pitfall traps were operated for 45 weeks during summers of 1995 to 1997. Belt conveyor haulage systems are critical to keep an underground-coal mine running profitably. It is not easy to design a reliable and efficient system. The issues associated with designing the capacity for a belt conveyor and a bunker are addressed in this dissertation. Several design models have been discussed, and discrete-event simulation models are recommended as the most flexible and useful tools. The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of CMC on the interactions between teacher/tutors and students/tutees on a commercial Internet provider's educational service. Specifically, this study endeavored to discover if using CMC for tutoring purposes allowed both students/tutees and teachers/tutors to increase the tutee access to tutor expertise, judge content based solely on the merit of the message and to determine what types of educational strategies were used in this medium. The following dissertation is the consolidation of three research projects in the U.S. electric utility industry. The first essay tests for scale economies in the electric utility industry using a panel data set of fossil fuel and nuclear fuel utilities. In addition, a variable cost function is used as opposed to a total cost function because the assumption of cost minimizing production inputs is not met. That is, electric utilities are overcapitalized. Therefore, the optimal capital stock is estimated and an estimate of economies of scale is generated. Inhalation of silica is characterized by initial pulmonary inflammation which may lead to fibrosis. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship of the transcriptional regulatory factor nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) to the early inflammatory events involved with silica exposure. Male F-344 rats received an intratacheal (i.t.) instillation of silica (100mg/kg in a volume of 1mg/kg) of saline. At 1, 3, 6 and 18 hours post-installation, the rats were sacrificed and underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) for functional analysis of inflammation. The problem of this research was to determine the priority environmental management training needs (drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste), classroom training system preferences and related cultural factors of Native American tribal officials with environmental responsibilities living on reservations in the United States. The researcher conducted telephone interviews with 18 tribal officials on reservations in diverse geographic areas of the United States to determine their classroom training preferences. The independent effects of two normally confounded delays to reinforcement produced by changing between concurrent variable-interval schedules of reinforcement were examined with pigeons. In Experiments 1 and 2, combinations of changeover delays and fixed-interval travel requirements were arranged for changeovers in a changeover-key concurrent schedule procedure. The delay from a changeover-produced change in stimulus conditions to a reinforcer was varied while the delay between the last response on one alternative and a reinforcer on the other (the total obtained delay) was held constant. Double stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) in the virus family Hypoviridae can be effective agents for the biological control of chestnut blight, however, a vegetative compatibility system in Cryphonectria parasitica is a major barrier to hypovirus transmission in the diverse populations of this fungus in North America. Hypoviruses are carried in the cytoplasm of the fungus and can be transmitted by cytoplasmic exchange during hyphal anastomosis. Anastomosis in C. parasitica is controlled by at least five biallelic vegetative incompatibility genes (vic genes). Laboratory results show that heteroallelism at some vic genes is more likely to inhibit hypovirus transmission than heteroallelism at other …

The purpose of this study was to provide information to West Virginia University and State Department of Education personnel that may be useful in developing a program whose purpose would be to educate educators on the effects of burnout. Data were collected via 92 questionnaires mailed to current agricultural teachers in West Virginia. Of these, 63 usable questionnaires were returned. The return rate was 68%. Converting the wood waste to ethanol is one way of efficiently disposing of the waste. However, the feasibility of the conversion facility is still being pursued. Three rats deprived to 80% of free-feeding weight pressed a bar to avoid electric shock in a Sidman avoidance procedure (20 s R-S interval, 5 s S-S interval). Once responding became stable, two of the rats were reduced to 70% of free feeding weight and one rat’s weight was increased to 95%. Cocaine (10.0, 17.0, 30.0, 40.0 mg/kg), morphine (5.6, 10.0, 17.0, 30.0, 40.0) and saline were tested in a random series with multiple determinations. The purpose of this work was to model and test an intermediate material that would absorb impact loads induced during deployment of a deployable rollover protective structure (ROPS) designed for use on a farm tractor. The design criteria required that the intermediate material, under compressive loads, maintain the integrity of all moving parts while introducing a minimum impact time of 0.005 seconds. A "ring" shaped part made of 80-Derometer rubber (a product of the Goodyear Corporation) was incorporated into the impact region of the ROPS deployment mechanism. This study addresses the transient dynamic response of a human skull-brain complex under impact loads. Three cross-sections; sagittal, transverse and coronal of the brain are considered to perform the transient dynamic analysis that describes the kinematics and stress wave patterns of the internal motions in the skull and brain mass. The main objective of this thesis is to provide the design and implementation of an object relationship framework in Java where objects can form relationships with other objects dynamically at runtime. Relationships among objects have long been recognized as the important semantic constructs facilitating ease of analysis & design of large complex systems. Almost all modeling techniques have notations to describe the existence of relationships among software components.
