How is it that Katherine of Aragon, a woman seemingly destined for a major impact on world events, has been relegated to the role of scorned wife and stubborn obstacle to historical progress? Beliefs about women’s roles limited Katherine while she was alive and influenced historical interpretations about her after her death. Katherine’s own interpretation of her role as a wife and mother evolved out of her perceptions of the opinions of others. The role that others had created for her was rigidly interpreted and internalized by Katherine. By not allowing herself to be used as a pawn by either …

Digitized, multitemporal, small format 35 mm aerial photographs were acquired, processed, and classified to determine the relative value of spectral and phenological information for tree crown classification of digital images of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. The one-hectare study site, located in a second-growth forest 15 km east of Morgantown, West Virginia, was photographed from a light aircraft ten times from May to October 1997 using both true color and false color film. The negatives and positive transparencies were scanned, and then rectified, enhanced, and classified using ERDAS Imagine. The Rieske iron sulfur protein is a subunit of the cytochrome bc1 complex of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. It is hypothesized that electron transfer by the iron sulfur protein requires movement of a flexible "tether" region that connects the transmembrane portion of the protein to its extramembranous domain (Zhang et al., 1998). To determine which amino acid residues are important for catalysis and stability of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae iron sulfur protein, site-directed mutagenesis was performed on two charged residues adjacent to the proposed flexible region (lysine 93 to leucine and glutamate 95 to arginine). The current experiments sought to extend human sign-tracking findings and to investigate behavioral contrast in a feature positive/feature negative paradigm with human participants. Twelve undergraduate students participated in one of two studies. Each participant was exposed to between nine and sixteen experimental sessions lasting between 10 and 20 minutes. A touch screen was used to detect touches to a computer monitor in either a feature positive arrangement, a feature negative arrangement, or a multiple VI10s-VI10s schedule presentation. The distinct feature presented was a filled triangle, while common features were filled squares. Reinforcement for touching the screen was not contingent on …

Two studies were conducted to determine if repeated exposure to social anxiety words decreased anxious responding in individuals diagnosed with social phobia. In the first study, four participants were asked to read words aloud, and in the second study, three participants were asked to read words silently. Single-subject methodology, using an alternating treatments design, was utilized. Anxious responding was assessed via Stroop test color-naming time of social and neutral words, word-reading time of social and neutral words, heart rate during word-reading and color-naming, and self-reports of distress. Results indicate that repeated reading of social anxiety words reduces anxious responding, and …

Four experiments were conducted to test whether transfer of stimulus control could be obtained between two drug facilitators, a drug and non-drug facilitator, and two non-drug facilitators. In the first experiment, the presence of methadone signaled which of two key lights would be followed by grain. In the absence of methadone, the contingencies were reversed. Concurrently, the presence of phencyclidine (PCP) signaled which of two additional key lights would be followed by grain. In the absence PCP, the contingencies were also reversed. The purpose of the study was to determine if principals' attendance to Principals' Academy had an effect on teachers' perception of empowerment in faculty senate group decision making. Faculty senate members in 120 West Virginia schools received the Short and Rinehart School Participant Empowerment Scale survey to provide perception of overall empowerment and six domains of empowerment. Data derived from 66 responding schools were analyzed using Statistical Analysis System and Analysis of Variance and produced the following results: There was no significant relationship, overall nor within domains, between the perceived level of empowerment of teachers in faculty senate group decision …

This research investigated the types of reasoning used by coal mine employees when exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Information was gathered through interviews of coal miners who related actual experiences in the coal mines. The information in the interviews and in the review of the literature was used to develop and implement an experiential program that promoted an individual's responsibility for their safety and the safety of co-workers. The experiential program addressed safe work behaviors from the perspectives of emotional and cognitive memories and the functions of the human brain. The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between interactive television instructors' perceptions of students' nonverbal responsiveness and their perceptions of distance students, teaching effectiveness, teaching satisfaction, teacher-student interpersonal relationships, and their preferring to teach in the interactive television classroom versus the traditional face-to-face classroom. The sample included 157 interactive television instructors who currently teach or have recently taught in both the traditional face-to-face and interactive television classrooms. The problem of determination and optimization of parting direction and parting line for cast and molded parts was studied. The approaches of the Circle Map Method and Projection Method have been developed to concurrently determine the alternatives for parting directions, determine the cavities, and optimize them for different parameters in castings. These methods were developed by computer programs that graphically present and justify the optimized results for parting directions. Two experiments examined the effects of morphine on the key pecking of pigeons maintained by fixed-interval schedules of food delivery. The first experiment was a systematic replication of Laties and Weiss (1966). Pecking was maintained by a multiple fixed-interval fixed-interval “clock†schedule with programmed interreinforcer intervals of 5 min. Evidence for disruption of patterning was found during the final stimulus in the clock sequence, which is inconsistent with previous suggestions that temporal patterning is unchanged in the presence of external clock stimuli. This study examined the statistical relationship between 12 selected demographic and situational variables and the completion of the doctorate from the West Virginia University - Marshall University - West Virginia Graduate College Cooperative Doctoral Program. In order to explore this relationship, the Doctoral Student Survey was designed utilizing variables drawn from a search of the literature pertaining to attrition from doctoral programs. This survey was sent to the 226 students that were admitted to the Cooperative Doctoral Program between 1980 and the Fall of 1993. Responses were received from 62% of those surveyed. Novels written by Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, Ursula Le Guin, and Barbara Kingsolver between 1971 and 1993 demonstrate a pattern of female heroism that both continues and revises the male monomyth as described by Joseph Campbell. The motifs these women's novels share with the traditional monomyth include: (1) the quest itself; (2) mysterious parentage; (3) the magical guide; (4) the slaying of the monster; (5) the boon; (6) (sometimes) the sacred marriage and the return. The purpose of this study was to construct a student perception of a teacher's health scale. The rationale for the study was the severe lack of research on the effects of a teacher's health in the classroom environment. In addition, the tremendous dropout rate in the teaching profession due to burnout, stress and other health related factors was a key ingredient. Although persons with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) report more physical symptoms than do relatively healthy persons, the relation between blood glucose (BG) and symptom reporting in persons with DM has been shown to be idiosyncratic. Even in subjects that demonstrate and significant BG/symptom relation, the effect is not stable over time (i.e., greater than eight months). Daily minor stressors and solicitous spousal responding have been shown to be related to symptom reporting in other chronic illness populations and might account for variance in symptom reporting by persons with DM. Appalachia is a region that continues to represent a paradoxical place in the geographical imagination of its residents, scholars and popular writers. There is a long and well documented history of the often violent exploitation of its land and people, and a marginalized tradition of protest. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for a bipartite graph to have an f-factor which includes a designated set of edges and is disjoint from another designated set of edges. Various other characterizations are obtained for similar subgraph structures, and a characterization is obtained for a bipartite graph to have an f-factor which includes no one of a collection of designated sets. This last characterization is used with several coloring arguments to show that {dollar}K\\sb{lcub}2n+1{rcub}\\\\{dollar}(any 2-factor), or simply, any {dollar}(2n-2){dollar}-regular graph on {dollar}2n+1{dollar} vertices, admits a Hamiltonian decomposition.
