This research introduces the social world of gaming and looks at how one achieves the identity of gamer. The methods are a form of triangulation in order to strengthen the research, consisting of participant observation, written questionnaire, and one-to-one interviews, with an emphasis on the personal narrative. The main venues for the research were the two largest US gaming conventions, Origins and GenCon. From the data collected, elements of the world of gaming and becoming a gamer were learned and are presented. Essentially, the identity of gamer comes from the individual but is reinforced through the world of gaming.

To date, research investigating parental influences contributing to the development of social anxiety has focused on maternal characteristics and the mother-child relationship. The role of fathers in the development of childhood-onset psychopathology has received relative inattention (e.g., Phares, 1996) and remains virtually unexplored within the realm of social anxiety. This study focused on identifying both maternal and paternal factors that may impact the development and maintenance of social anxiety experienced by school-aged children. Forty-eight (22 high socially anxious, 26 low socially anxious) children and their fathers completed self-report questionnaires, and father-child interactions during a ten-minute challenging task were conducted. An in vitro laboratory protocol for assessing cold hardiness (CH) in rhododendrons based on electrolyte-leakage was developed. The raw leakage data were transformed into percent-adjusted injury, which showed high correlation with injury data based on visual observations. The percent-adjusted injury data---fitted to the Gompertz function coupled with the Jackknife method---allowed for reliable and statistically sound estimations of Rhododendron leaf freezing-tolerance (LFT). Utilizing this method, Tmax values for Rhododendron cultivars, species, and populations were determined and ranked relatively. Sedimentation is the major pollutant of waters in North America. Most research on the effects of increased sedimentation has focussed on its effects on stream habitat and its ramification on the reproductive potential of fish. Although relatively large sediment loads may be necessary to alter stream habitat, only small loads are needed to raise mean stream turbidity levels. The actin filament associated protein of 110 kDa (AFAP-110) is a SH2/SH3 binding partner for Src. It has two SH2 binding motifs, one SH3 binding motif, one proline rich motif, two PH domains and one serine/threonine substrate region at its amino terminus and has been hypothesized to function as an adapter protein that mediate the effects of different signal proteins upon actin filaments. Eighteen 200 ha plots were established in the Monongahela National Forest (MON), Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and in the George Washington National Forest (GW), Augusta County, Virginia. From 1995 through 1998 black light traps, foliage pruning, and canvas bands were used to collect macrolepidopteran adults and larvae. During 1997 and 1998, 6 plots each were aerially treated with nucleopolyhedrosis virus (Gypchek(TM); GC) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk: Bt). The remaining 6 plots were left untreated (Ref). Leaf samples from Bt plots were analyzed for toxin concentrations using enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay techniques. Cardiac output is the amount of blood pumped by the heart in one minute. The Doppler effect can be used to measure cardiac output by measuring the peak frequency, which is directly proportional to the velocity of blood flowing in the aorta, associated with the Doppler shift signal when an ultrasound beam is incident on the aorta. Stroke volume is the product of the cross sectional area of the aorta and the integration of peak velocity over time. Stroke volume times the heart rate is the cardiac output. BIOLOGRTM GN and GP microtitre plates were used to compare functional diversity of large (>0.45 mum, LC) and small (<0.45 mum, SC) cells within A and B horizons of cultivated and forested Guernsey silt-loam soil without enrichment and following enrichment in dilution culture. Without enrichment, SC exhibited limited substrate utilization compared with LC. B horizon SC failed to positively utilize any carbon substrates, which suggests that they may be physiologically inactive and/or metabolically distinct from those in A horizon soils. Following enrichment, A horizon SC from highly diluted enrichment cultures produced substrate utilization patterns distinct both from all enrichments of LC and from SC obtained in less dilute enrichments. At any given inoculum dilution, A horizon SC exhibited greater substrate utilization than B horizon SC, which exhibited positive substrate utilization following enrichment. Amplified ribosomal DNA (ARDRA) analyses of SC dilution culture enrichments demonstrated distinct bacterial sub-populations from a single soil sample.

Effects of iron on production of glomalin, an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal glycoprotein, were examined. In a preliminary experiment comparing available (FeEDDHA) and unavailable iron (hematite), low amounts of glomalin were produced with the former while the latter total inhibited the symbiosis. Part of the effect of hematite was reduced spore germination. A glycoprotein cross-reacting with a monoclonal antibody against glomalin was produced in nonmycorrhizal pots. This molecule is similar to glomalin, but has some unique characteristics. Concentration increases when C3 and C4 grasses are stressed from low nutrients and/or light but levels are at least 10-fold less than glomalin. Two …

Relative effectiveness of ten species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi native to a revegetated coal strip mine site was tested on red clover against a non-mycorrhizal control and against inocula of two commercial isolates. Most (70%) of the isolated species in a native fungal community were as effective at promoting growth as commercial isolates. The net benefit of native colonizing fungi likely was positive, since the majority of the fungi colonizing two-year-old apple and grape in the field also were effective symbionts. The purpose of this study was to explore the explanatory models of individuals living in chronic pain. As technological advancements lower heavy duty vehicle particulate matter (PM) mass emission rates, there is concern that these improvements are increasing the toxicity of the PM by virtue of a subsequent reduction in particle size. These ultrafine particles are able to better penetrate the alveolar region where they can cause serious lung disorders. Alternative fuels such as compressed and liquefied natural gas (CNG and LNG) and the synthetic diesel fuel Mossgas are attractive in that they reduce the levels of total PM. Songbird-habitat relationships were investigated using three interrelated studies, each at multiple scales, on the Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia. In each study I used landscape (25 km2), transect (2500 m), and point (50-m radius point count plot) scales.;In the first study, I investigated bird abundance and species richness at these scales in four major forest types: mixed mesophytic, northern hardwoods, red spruce, and dry oaks. At the landscape scale, forest types differed in bird abundance (p = 0.07) and species richness (p = 0.08). The storage stability of coal liquids is of great importance if coal liquefaction products are to replace petroleum products. It has been reported that gum formation occurs in coal-derived liquids during storage to a level at which it becomes a handling problem. The aging of coal hydropyrolysis liquids has been studied. Coal liquid products were placed in preweighed sample vials and stored under light, in the presence of air, at different storage temperatures (2, 21, and 32°C). This study examines the relationship between a history of milk A/I in infancy and intelligence in later childhood. Participants included 74 male and female children ages 3 years to 12 years, referred for psychological evaluation. Background information gathered from the primary caregiver included history of milk A/I in infancy. The Wechsler Scales of Intelligence provided information on the participants level of cognitive functioning. Findings were significant for both ANOVA and chi square analysis, with children in Group One (milk A/I) demonstrating lower IQ scores than children in Group Two (no milk A/I). Much of the assessment conducted by behavioral health providers is nomothetic in nature. For example, a primary goal of many clinicians is to determine the diagnostic category that best fits a given client. This is problematic because simply knowing what diagnosis best fits a client does not necessarily lead to an effective treatment decision. In contrast to a nomothetic approach to assessment, behavior analysis emphasizes idiographic assessments. One example is a functional assessment. This project examined whether experiential avoidance differentiated alcohol-dependent relapsers from non-relapsers. Eighty-five subjects receiving inpatient addiction treatment were assessed for degree of experiential avoidance (using a new measure called the AAQ, coping style, alcohol severity, anxiety, and depression. It was hypothesized that the AAQ, along with avoidant coping and negative life events, would differentiate those who subsequently relapsed with those who did not. Three months after discharge, subjects were contacted for follow-up to determine whether or not they had relapsed, and to what degree they had experienced negative and/or positive life events. This thesis is a study of field data and remotely sensed data to evaluate the structural diversity, texture, spectral and spatial differences between forest stands of three age classes (50--69, 70--89, and >90 years) in the Cheat District on the Monongahela National Forest. The structural diversity was determined with foliage-height profiles for 48 stands ranging from 52 to 148 years old. Structural diversity was highest in the 70--89 and >90 year old stands and lowest in the 50--69 year old stands. Seventeen males and seventeen females performed a speech task, once in the presence of an experimenter with their significant other present offering encouragement and support and once in the presence of the experimenter alone. Children in this study were recruited from a local elementary school, as well as two outpatient clinics. Hypertension and other cardiovascular complications are the major causes of hospitalization and death in patients with chronic renal diseases (CRD). Our laboratory has previously reported that total nitric oxide (NO) production is decreased in CRD. Practical methods, based upon linear systems theory, are explored for applications to nonlinear phenomena and are extended to a larger class of problems. An algorithm for stabilizing, characterizing, and tracking unstable steady states and periodic orbits in multidimensional dynamical systems is developed and applied to stabilize and characterize an unstable four-cell flame front of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with six unstable degrees of freedom. A new method is presented for probing chemical reaction mechanisms experimentally with perturbations and measurements of the response. The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of public high school teachers and students in Leflore County, Mississippi regarding agriculture and provide baseline data regarding the perception of high school students and teachers residing in an agriculturally dependent county with no agricultural education program. A population of 240 high school teachers and students was surveyed for their perceptions regarding agriculture. All three public high schools in Leflore County were represented in this study.
