The growth of music education within the public schools of America and the philosophy which reflects its goals and objectives should serve as a measure of the desirability for correction of intonation within the elementary schools. If this is the philosophy of music education and elementary students are to develop an esthetic appreciation of music, a performance skill should be taught. This skill should aid in teaching a knowledge of literature and an understanding of the organization of music, which lead to the achievement of musicality.

The purpose of this dissertation is to show how symmetry is a general determinant* of musical composition. Symmetry will be defined as a congruence which results from certain specific operations, namely those of reflection, rotation, or translation and will be applied to any aspect of musical composition. A composition is here to be the combination and arrangement of parts to form a whole. Stated in another v/ay, the purpose is to demonstrate how postoperative congruences define the arrangement and combination of the parts of musical works.

The Southern Appalachian Highlands represent a unique geographical region in which to study plants. The Ericaceae, especially well developed in this region, are a family of plants which have long been of interest to man. At the present time there exists no adequate treatment of the Ericaceae of this particular area. The present study, based mainly upon examination of herbarium specimens and supplemented by studies in the field, attempts to correlate these findings with all the scattered published information concerning the genera of this family in the Southern Appalachians. The purpose of this study will be to identify and explain the conceptual syndrome operating in the transformation by which the stated instructional goals, as established by the School of Nursing at West Virginia University, become the real instructional goals as pursued by the teaching staff of the School of Nursing. The purpose of this study is to test the anxietyinhibiting effects of two modifications in traditional instructions for paired-associate learning. It will be assumed that effective anxiety-inhibition will be evidenced by a significant decline in the number of trials required for subjects to arrive at a common learning criterion. Tha two instructional modifications to be tested ara specifically: (1) Requiring subjects to delay responding aloud for an established number of list presentations (as opposed to permitting immediate responses), and (2) Informing subjects that capable individuals frequently experience considerable frustration before mastering the task with which they will be presented.

Free Radical Addition Of Mercaptoacetic Acid To Substituted Phenylcyclohexenes, Roberta Sue Core

Comparative rates of the free radical addition of mercaptoacetic acid to substituted phenylcyclohexenes have been studied with special reference to the activities of the olefins against Lewis Lung Carcinoma, Sarcoma 180, Lymphoid Leukemia and KB Cultures. All cancer screening data were supplied by the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center at the National Cancer Center. The rates of addition of mercaptoacetic acid to substituted phenylcyclohexenes were determined by measuring the amount of unreacted mercaptoacetic acid by iodine titration. The reaction was studied at 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 thlol:olefin molar ratios. At a 2:1 ratio the rates were approximately doubled and at …
