This study was designed to ascertain and record the experiences of West Virginia agriculture teachers who have established aquaculture units in their schools and have taught aquaculture for two or more years. This study will provide suggestions to those who may yet integrate aquaculture into their curriculum.;A "Focused Interview" was used to gather qualitative data from eight-experienced aquaculture teachers. Uric acid has been hypothesized as one of the most important antioxidants in limiting the accumulation of advanced glycolated endproducts in broiler breeder hens. This study was designed to quantitatively manipulate the plasma uric acid concentrations using hemin and allopurinol and determine its effect on skin pentosidine, shear force value of Pectoralis major muscle, plasma glucose, body and breast weight, and chemiluminescence induced oxidative stress in broiler chickens. Allopurinol decreased plasma uric acid, ranging from 26% to 74%, with the most pronounced effect at wk 22. Hemin increased plasma uric acid concentrations between 11 and 14%. This study documents effects of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on reproductive traits in a flock of Cobb X Cobb broiler breeder hens. The objective was to determine if the MHC affects reproduction of non-congenic broiler breeder hens. Genomic DNA was isolated from 35 hens. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was performed on each sample, using a chicken class II MHC probe (Xu et al. 1989). Restriction endonuclease digestion using PvuII resulted in polymorphisms in all birds. Five polymorphic bands were identified. The largest bands, 7.5 kb and 5.4 kb, were present in one and four hens respectively. The …

Influence Of Selection For Breast Muscle Mass On Ph And Metabolism Of Supracoracoideus Muscle From Male And Female Turkey, John Kenneth Yost

The objective of this study was to determine if selection for increased breast muscle mass has affected the supracoracoideus muscle's ability to regulate pH during physical activity in turkeys. The lightweight male line (LM) had the greatest breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight (p < 0.0001), a lower average pH (6.68; p < 0.0001), and greater Lactate Dehydrogenase (293 mmol NADH min-1mug-1 ; p < 0.0001) and Glyceraldehyde Phosphate Dehydrogenase (0.4452 mmol NADH min-1mug-1; p < 0.05) activities than the HM and FL lines. The LM line had the highest ratio (2.33:1) (p < 0.05) of adult to neonatal myosin. Hens had greater breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight than males (p < 0.0001), and a lower average pH (6.62; p < 0.05). This study showed that genetic selection for breast muscle mass resulted in an increased ratio of adult to neonatal myosin and an increased anaerobic capacity, which may predispose birds to a lower ultimate pH during physical activity.

The major focus of this study was to further investigate the area of sibling verbal aggression. In order to research this area, students at West Virginia University and their siblings were asked to complete a questionnaire about verbal aggression. The results showed that self-reports of verbal aggression were consistent with other reports. Results also showed that male same sexed siblings were more likely to display more verbal aggression than all other combinations. Results revealed that males self-reports of verbal aggression were higher than females. Results also indicated that males are reported by their siblings to be more verbally aggressive than …

Treatment of alkenyldicyclohexylboranes with 1-lithio-5-butyl-3,4-nonadien-1-yne, derived from 5-butyl-3,4-nonadien-1-yne, followed by trimethyltin chloride and acetic acid furnished the corresponding o-isotoluenes in a single operation. The reaction proceeded through an initial formation of (Z)-diene-allenes, which underwent facile eletrocyclizations to produce o-isotoluenes.;Treatment of allenyldicyclohexylborane with 1-lithio-5,5-pentamethylene-3,4-pentadien-1-yne produced the organoborate complex, which on further treatment with trimethyltin chloride furnished a (Z)-1,2,4,6,7-octapentaene (enediallene) derivative in situ. The subsequent electrocyclic reaction then generated the corresponding o-quinodimethane attached with a dicyclohexylboryl group and a trimethyltin group. The resulting o-quinodimethane then underwent a [1,5]-sigmatropic hydrogen shift, and on subsequent oxidative workup and protonation gave the 4-(1-cyclohexenyl)-3-methylphenol (51%). The …

Effects of 1.0 mg/kg and 0.4 mg/kg intraperitoneal nicotine on hypothalamic and extra hypothalamic levels of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) were examined in 104 rats. CRF, a 41-amino acid peptide involved in responses to stress, fear and anxiety, influences the same neurotransmitter systems as nicotine, a psychoactive component of tobacco. Radioimmunoassays revealed that in macro-dissected hypothalami, 15 minutes treatment with 1.0 mg/kg nicotine significantly increased CRF content compared to no treatment. The 1.0 mg/kg dose did not elicit effects in macro-dissected amygdala and brain stem. With 0.4 mg/kg nicotine, no significant effects were observed in micro-dissected hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, amygdaloid …

Three of the eight actin genes in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus were used for a comparative analysis. The cytoplasmic actin genes CyI, CyIIb and CyIIa are linked in the genome and encode very similar proteins. However, their spatial and temporal expression patterns are differentially regulated. The region of CyIIa upstream of the ATG and putative transcription start site was subcloned and sequenced. Sites of protein-DNA interaction were identified using DNaseI footprinting. This study uses dynamical analysis to examine in a quantitative fashion the information coding mechanism in DNA sequences. This exceeds the simple dichotomy of either modeling the mechanism by comparing DNA sequence walks as Fractal Brownian Motion (fbm) processes. The 2-D mappings of the DNA sequences for this research are from Iterated Function System (IFS) (Also known as the "Chaos Game Representation" (CGR)) mappings of the DNA sequences. Heme serves as a cofactor of cytochromes and catalases. It is essential for energy generation and in defense against toxic hydrogen peroxide in nearly all cells including Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli. Indirect evidence has suggested that heme synthesis is a regulated process. Little is known about how heme synthesis is regulated in enteric bacteria even though the heme synthetic pathway is genetically well-defined. Subjects were exposed to different concentrations of CFC-113 for variable duration while conducting 30-minute exercise regiments. End-exhaled breath samples were collected 25, 30 and 35 minutes after the exercise regiment and quantified using gas chromatography. Three comparative studies were conducted.;A short duration administration delivered at the beginning or at the end of the regiment was compared to a long duration administration delivered at the beginning or at the end of the exercise regiment. RpoS is an alternative sigma factor which is required for the expression of genes that help bacteria cope with environmental stress. The regulation of RpoS is multifactorial and occurs at the levels of synthesis and protein turnover. Our lab has previously identified a rpoS translation enhancing factor in Salmonella typhimurium, the RNA-binding protein HF-I. An antisense element consisting of rpoS mRNA secondary structure is predicted to sequester the rpoS ribosome binding site and inhibit translation. This study extends previous work investigating the generalizability of cardiovascular reactivity to stress obtained in response to laboratory-based tasks to cardiovascular reactivity measured in response to a natural occurring event. Cardiovascular reactivity (HR, SBP, DBP) to stress was measured with ambulatory monitoring equipment in 6 male and 16 female healthy Caucasian graduate students in two settings: during five standardized laboratory stressors, and during the proposal or defense of a thesis or dissertation. Predictability of panic attacks has been identified as an important factor in the development, maintenance, and treatment of panic disorder. Although animal studies typically have found a preference for signaled (predictable) over unsignaled (unpredictable) aversive events, results with human participants have been less clear. Because preference for predictability has a wide range of clinical implications, we examined human preference for predictability in a biological challenge paradigm. Further, we examined the differential effects of predictability as a function of anxiety sensitivity and gender. The study was modeled after studies of organizational effectiveness in higher education by Kim Cameron of Brigham Young University. The study identifies six domains of effectiveness that are important to gerontology centers and the structural and functional models and characteristics of gerontology centers that may predict the domain in which it is effective. Increasingly stringent emissions legislation and demands for improved fuel economy have mandated the need for advanced control algorithms and complicated the diesel engine calibration procedure. To this end, a neural network-based mean value model of a modern turbocharged direct injection diesel engine has been developed and validated. For a pre-specified engine speed schedule and control vector trajectory, the engine model was shown to produce accurate predictions of the turbocharger manifold charging dynamics and combustion efficiency through engine brake torque predictions. In the last century, wood railway tie and bridge material has been treated almost exclusively with the preservative creosote in order to improve durability. Survey And Home Range Analyses Of Wintering Shorebirds Using The Lanark Reef Shorebird Complex, Franklin Co., Florida, Christine Marie Gunnels

Radio telemetry was used to document spatial variation in use by wintering shorebirds at a series of sites believed to form the Lanark Reef Shorebird Complex in Franklin County. Fifty and 95% convex polygon home range estimate for Willets (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus) averaged 0.52 km 2 and 14.85 km2, respectively. Fifty and 95% convex polygon home range estimate for the Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) averaged <0.01 km2 and 0.10 km 2, respectively. Fifty and 95% convex polygon for the Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) and Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus ) was 0.32 km2, and 6.72 km2, and 0.36 km2 and 24.41 km2, respectively. Black-bellied Plovers appeared to have the smallest distance between locations followed by Willets, Long-billed Curlews and Marbled Godwits.;Replicate shorebird surveys were conducted on the reef and count data were regressed against four environmental variables (wind speed, tide height, cloud cover, and temperature). Regression results (R2 adj) accounted for 45% and 66% of the variance in total shorebird counts on the Reef for 1996 and 1997, respectively. Shorebird total counts were positively correlated with tide height for 1996 and 1997 (P < 0.01).

An aluminum company in West Virginia uses an oil-water (metal working fluid) in their rolling mill process for lubrication. In the past, the company collected the oily-waste into two lined waste ponds with a combined holding capacity of 5 million gallons. Separation of the oil-water mixture occurred as emulsifiers in the metal working fluid broke down. Free oil was skimmed resulting in a pond effluent, which contained 0.2 to 1.0% oil. Pond effluent was sprayed on a treatment field and the remaining oil was degraded naturally. The daily flow to the spray fields averaged 80,000 gallons. In 1993, concerns about …

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of transmembrane pressure, membrane rotational speed and feed oil content on permeate water quality in the treatment of a synthetic metal working fluid in the HSRUF system. Permeate oil grease and total organic carbon concentrations increased with transmembrane pressure and feed oil content due to the increased density or thickness of the solute concentration boundary layer. However, hydraulic turbulence created by membrane rotation minimized the thickness of the solute concentration boundary layer therefore reducing solute permeation through the membrane. Purpose. To investigate the relationship of disease severity, health beliefs, and medication adherence among HIV/AIDS patients.;Results. Seventy-two HIV patients were enrolled. There were no significant differences in patients' perceived severity of HIV/AIDS and perceptions of benefits and barriers of the treatment across three disease stages. However, patients who had greater experience with the disease (stage C) perceived a higher risk to develop complications if they were not adherent compared to asymptomatic patients (stage A). The purpose of this study was to determine if prophylactic oral administration of etodolac would significantly reduce post-endodontic pain, when compared to ibuprofen and a placebo.;Thirty-six patients requiring conventional root canal therapy consented to single blind oral administration of either 400 mg of etodolac, 600 mg of ibuprofen, or a placebo, prior to conventional root canal therapy. The following study explored the role of verbal ability and executive functioning in theory of mind understanding in elementary school children. Scores on measures of language comprehension, verbal ability (sentence memory, and forward digit span), matrix completion, executive functioning (backward digit span), and second-order theory of mind tasks were obtained. Partial correlations of the measures controlling for age revealed verbal ability to be significantly correlated with theory of mind comprehension. A regression analysis demonstrated that auditory language comprehension was the only variable, in addition to age, that explained unique variance in performance on a recursive thinking task. The development of a real-time, on-board measurement of exhaust emissions from heavy-duty engines would offer tremendous advantages in on-board diagnostics and engine control. In the absence of suitable measurement hardware, an alternative approach is the development of software-based predictive approaches. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using in-cylinder pressure-based variables as the inputs to predictive neural networks that are then used to predict engine-out exhaust gas emissions. Previous research shows that many older adults do have difficulties with certain learning tasks. However, not all older adults experience these difficulties.
