Education majors at Maryland community colleges have often faced difficulties in transferring to four-year colleges, frequently having to repeat courses, resulting in greater financial burdens and delayed graduation. In the fall of 1999, the Chief Academic Officers Intersegmental Group appointed the Teacher Education Articulation Committee whose task was to establish a seamless transfer between two- and four-year public and private colleges in Maryland. This committee determined outcomes for elementary teacher candidates that defined the requirements of a new degree, the Associates of Arts in Teaching. Coalbed methane is an unconventional gas resource that consists of methane production from the coal seams. The key parameters for the evaluation of coalbed methane (CBM) prospects are the gas resources, reserves and deliverability. Coalbed methane reservoirs are dual-porosity media where the vast majority of the gas is stored in the low permeability coal matrix (primary porosity) by sorption. The flow to production wells, however, occurs through the coal's natural fracture system (secondary porosity), which stores relatively small amounts of gas, because coal matrix practically has no permeability.;For the gas to be released from the coal, its partial pressure must …

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different dilution methodologies on diesel exhaust particle size distributions and concentrations. A two-stage ejector based dilution system was used to dilute the raw exhaust at total dilution ratios of 240 and 504. A naturally aspirated, mechanically controlled, 3-cylinder inline, 0.953 liter Daihatsu Model DM950DTH engine was employed and tests were conducted with and without a wire mesh Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC). High-risk behavior in the domains of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use, and sexual behavior were investigated in relation to tattoo presence/absence among adolescents aged 18-22 years. Adolescents' motivations to become tattooed were also explored. Participants included 400 tattooed and non-tattooed (147 male, 253 female) students at West Virginia University. Self-report questionnaires, which included items from the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) as well as items derived by the investigator, were used to assess risk-taking behavior, tattoo presence/absence, and motives for obtaining/not obtaining tattoos. A significant relationship between high-risk behavior and tattooing was found using crosstabulation and chi-square analyses, …

Two analyses using soft tissue landmarks (Arnett's Soft Tissue Cephalometric Analysis, STCA and Andrews' Six Elements Diagnostic System, 6E) were compared for their ability to generate esthetic profiles in lateral repose and smiling. Photographs of 23 subjects were digitally altered to represent the STCA and 6E surgical predictions and presented to panels of professionals and lay people for rating on a visual analog scale (0-50). Professionals and lay people agreed that the 6E simulated profiles were significantly preferred to the Arnett simulated profiles in both smiling and repose. Learning second language vocabulary has always been a challenge for second language (L2) learners. Transferring new vocabulary to an active stage has been an even greater challenge.;In the 1990s, Lewis (2002a) proposed the Lexical Approach as a means to help L2 learners with vocabulary acquisition. This approach encouraged the teaching of vocabulary in chunks, or in other words, putting emphasis on collocations. Focus on vocabulary collocations was suggested by several researchers (Brown, 1974; Hinkel, 2004; Lewis, 2001). They supported the teaching of collocations via in-class exercises. The type of electrofishing gear influences capture efficiencies and abundance estimates of stream fishes. Few studies have examined the Holton and Sullivan (1954) parallel wires method of electrofishing. For this study, I modeled removal data with seven sampling occasions of three common species, western blacknose dace (Rhinichthys obtusus), fantail darter (Etheostoma flabellare), and mottled sculpin ( Cottus bairdi) from 10 paired sites in the upper Greenbrier River drainage, West Virginia, and estimated capture efficiencies of two electrofishing gear types (the Holton and Sullivan parallel wires method with alternating current and backpack units with pulsed-direct current). American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) is a wild-harvested perennial plant of the eastern deciduous forest. Harvest supplies world markets with roots used in Asian medicine, but this practice is fatal to plants. The objective of this research was to investigate the genetic and evolutionary consequences of harvest. As seen in animal species, harvest may alter size selection by preferentially removing large individuals. Chapter 2 describes my study of harvest's effects on size selection. From the simulated harvests, I observed that large-sized plants lose their fitness advantages in harvested populations. The present study examined the association between parenting style and anxiety in children with asthma. Participants included 60 children with asthma and 60 controls, aged 9-12 years. At least one of the children's parents participated. The children and their parents completed self-report measures of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Children reported on their parent's style of parenting, while parent's reported on parent-child relationship quality. Parents and physicians completed asthma severity reports. Results partially replicated previous findings. A Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) demonstrated that children with asthma obtained significantly higher scores than controls on the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). …

The thesis of this dissertation is that Indian-related violence and warfare had a profound influence on the duration and nature of the frontier experience of those men and women who settled in the western Virginia backcountry between 1749 and 1794. Recurrent attacks by Shawnees, Delawares, Mingos, and Indians from the Great Lakes region caused such widespread death, destruction, and depopulation that it effectively prolonged the period of austere and difficult living conditions for over forty years. This conclusion contradicts the assertions of some recent scholars who have argued that crude living conditions lasted for only a year or two on …

Pregnancy failures during placentation in lactating dairy cows have been associated with low concentrations of peripheral serum progesterone (P 4) and poor development of the chorioallantoic membranes. Experiment I was done to determine if pregnant cows with high or low concentrations of serum P4 differed in luteal production of P4 and/or clearance of injected P4. Luteal tissue was removed from pregnant cows with ≥ 4.0 ng/mL (High) or ≤ 2.5 ng/mL (Low) serum P4 during d 28 to 34 post-insemination. The plant hormone ethylene plays an important role in numerous plant growth and developmental processes, including flower development and senescence. Once perceived by ethylene receptors, the ethylene signal is transduced through a series of components until it reaches its ultimate targets (e.g. senescence-related (SR) genes). EIN3, a transcription factor and positive regulator of the ethylene signaling pathway, most likely affects these SR genes. Growth of the arteriolar network is accompanied by progressive changes in pressure and flow, and in the metabolic environment to which the arterioles are exposed. This dissertation was carried out to investigate the extent to which mechanisms involved in local blood flow regulation may also change during this growth. We isolated gracilis muscle arterioles from weanling (age 25-26 days) and juvenile (44-66 days) rats, and studied the responsiveness of these vessels to both myogenic and endothelium-dependent stimuli. This study utilized 30 extracted human third molars. The teeth were sectioned into buccal and lingual halves. The samples were divided into three treatment groups (MI Paste; MI Paste/Fluoridated toothpaste; MI Paste/Enamel Care toothpaste) and one control. The samples were then subjected to cycling in a demineralizing solution (pH=4.46) and a remineralizing solution (pH=7.00) with treatment rendered between cycles. Cycling continued for 14 days. Lesion depth, lesion area, fluorescence and total fluorescence were measured using confocal microscopy. Results were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer analyses. Methoxychlor, an organochlorine pesticide, is released into the environment as a result of its agricultural, home and veterinary use. Following in vivo administration, it is quickly metabolized by liver to the proposed active agent, HPTE. Both methoxychlor and HPTE have been shown to exhibit weak estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities, and they are thought to exert their effects through estrogen and androgen receptors. In vivo exposure to methoxychlor in laboratory animals causes ovarian atrophy and impaired ovarian steroid production. Previously, publications from our lab had demonstrated that arsenic can regulate Gadd45α through p53-dependent and -independent manner where we explored the regulation of Gadd45α by various transcription factors, including Foxo3a, NF-κB and through stress signaling pathways such as JNK. Here we analyzed whether arsenic has any impact on the biosynthesis of Egr-1, since Egr-1 has also been reported to regulate Gadd45α in keratinocytes in response to UVB. Our results show arsenic can induce Egr-1 synthesis in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Unaccustomed muscular activity (incorporating lengthening-type movements) results in skeletal muscle damage, yet effects in performance and muscle morphology from movements such as stretch-shortening contractions (which are common-type movements in daily activities) are not well characterized or quantified. The current study examined how age and sex of participants, gender stereotype roles for the protagonist, and domain of the problem influenced the generation of problem-solving goals and strategies. One hundred and seventeen participants, 136 younger adults (M= 19 .22, SD = 1.30:58 M, 78 F) and 81 older adults (M= 73.17, SD = 7.76:38 M, 43 F) were given two hypothetical vignettes, one in the work domain, and one in the caregiving domain. Land conversion and industrial pollution are two of the most influential vehicles for anthropogenic perturbation of natural terrestrial processes and both have increased dramatically over the course of the last century. This research explores the role of Central Appalachian hardwood forests in the global carbon (C) balance during a century of regeneration with changing land use and atmospheric pollution. The carbohydrate portion of the natural products plays a crucial role in biology, such as target binding, solubility, tissue targeting, and membrane transportation. The O'Doherty group use a de novo methodology to build the desired functionality and stereochemistry within each sugar, in contrast to the traditional approach using known sugar isomers as starting materials. Recently, we have developed a practical and highly diastereoselective palladium catalyzed glycosylation reaction to control the stereochemistry at the anomeric center. Introduction of engineered nanomaterials into water systems has potential of affecting microbial viability and resistance to commonly used disinfectants. We studied how photocatalytically induced oxidative stress by engineered nanoparticles can affect bacterial viability and resistance to UVC at 254 nm. Flow cytometry analysis, fecal viability analysis and respiratory measurements showed that oxidative stress induced by engineered TiO2 nanoparticles with concentrations in ppb range can cause sublethal effects and lowered oxygen utilization rate. Respiratory measurements showed that degree of reduction in oxygen utilization depended on exposure time to oxidative stress but was not sensitive to nanoparticle concentrations examined in the study.;Fecal …
