Developing Critical Consciousness: Representations Of Race And Gender In Two Afro-German Works., Maren Knebel
Developing Critical Consciousness: Representations Of Race And Gender In Two Afro-German Works., Maren Knebel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Eva Demski and Ika Hügel-Marshall are two contemporary women writers whose works contribute significantly to the Afro-German culture. Demski is a “white” German author who depicts in her novel the life of an Afro-German woman, Afra, as well as the life of her “white” daughter, Nivea. Hügel-Marshall, who was born in 1947 as the daughter of a German mother and an African-American father, depicts in her autobiography her own development from object to subject. This thesis demonstrates that both authors encourage a development of critical consciousness by creating written evidence of a shared Afro-German identity and by expressing the problems …
Comparing Moral Values In Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's "Miss Sara Sampson" And Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter"., Karsten Dieter Kleine
Comparing Moral Values In Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's "Miss Sara Sampson" And Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter"., Karsten Dieter Kleine
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the impact of rigid moral codes on women by comparing two works, Lessing’s Miss Sara Sampson, (1775), and Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, (1850). Although the works were written in different centuries and continents, they share a common theme: the clash between patriarchal control and women’s quest for self-determination. In each work, a beautiful young woman violates the social code by becoming involved in an illicit love affair, and because of this transgression and her refusal to renounce her love, is severely punished. Also in each work, the father-daughter relationship is highlighted and can be seen to symbolize …

Language Imperialism Versus Linguistic Rights: The Case Of Native Americans., Jonathan Woodruff Maffay
Language Imperialism Versus Linguistic Rights: The Case Of Native Americans., Jonathan Woodruff Maffay
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
From the days of the Old Testament and Tower of Babel through the nineteenth century efforts to create artificial languages, the human race has longed for a universal language. Its purpose would be to bind the linguistically diverse people of the world into a cohesive whole. With English apparently well on its way to becoming just such a universal language, many people are now growing concerned at the prospect. For them English is an imperial language that threatens the world’s rich cultural and language complexity. Linguistic rights activists have now begun trying to counter this universalizing trend with language repair …
Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato
Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Not long after Germans began the historic task of dismantling the Berlin Wall in 1989, their country was again reunited after forty-five years of division. For the second time in less than a century, a majority of Europe’s Germans were brought together under the banner of a single political sovereignty. As the enlarged Federal Republic psychologically reorients and physically reconstructs itself, the event is likely to have continued European and worldwide implications. Understanding the new Germany’s internal development and its evolving self-perceptions is to conceive of the country’s role now and in the years ahead; central to understanding Germany today …

The Influence Of Seventeenth-Century Anglo-Saxon Scholarship On Milton's Prose, "The History Of Britain", And "Paradise Lost"., Matthew B. Mccrady
The Influence Of Seventeenth-Century Anglo-Saxon Scholarship On Milton's Prose, "The History Of Britain", And "Paradise Lost"., Matthew B. Mccrady
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Was John Milton’s prose and poetry in any way influenced by seventeenth-century Anglo-Saxon scholarship? The answer is "yes." Just as John Milton was in dialogue with radical seventeenth-century political groups such as the Levellers and Diggers—a ground-breaking thesis first proposed by Christopher Hill—so Milton was also in dialogue with those academics and antiquarians researching and, in some ways, reinventing the Anglo-Saxon past. Through a close reading of Milton’s first Defense and other selected prose works, as well as the History of Britain and Paradise Lost, this thesis proposes to reexamine an old issue that has never been satisfactorily explicated. In …
Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood
Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Culture is a pervasive concept that is not easily encompassed in any one definition. Culture within an organization is both process and product. It is both a dynamic agent of influence within the temporal and spatial context of organizational life and an object of study approached from the actor's point of view and thickly described. My general interest is in the cultural context of colleges, and more specifically in the part that culture has played in the formation and transformation of the mission and role of Berea College as it has sought to educate marginalized people for nearly 150 years. …

Increased Exposure To Specific Types Of Narrative As A Mechanism Of Change In Theory Of Mind Development., Nicole Marie Ruther
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Over the past decade, researchers have become increasingly interested in children's developing "theories of mind," the attribution of thoughts and beliefs to both themselves and others, and the description of relations between mental states and actions. Although earlier work was focused on identifying the age at which children obtain such knowledge, more recently researchers have begun to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the development of a child's theory of mind. The purpose of the present study was to experimentally examine the importance of narrative as a mechanism through which children come to understand relations between people's thoughts and actions. Thirty-seven …

A Neural Network Based Inference Engine Generator For Comprehension And Translation Of English And Spanish Commands To Unix "E-Mail" And "Vi" Editor., Mohammad Reza Moozoun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the advent of computers, scientists have tried to use the human languages for communication with computers. This pursuit has led several scientists, such as Chomsky to establish that there must be a specific part of the brain adapted to language learning and processing genetically, namely the "language organ". Humans are able to understand and produce sentences that they may have never heard. This leads to the understanding that language must follow some strict rules of processing which is referred to as "grammar of a language". The Artificial Neural Networks (NN) inspired by the neural networks of biological systems have …
There Was Something In The Water: Parallels In Paradigms In English And Physics, 1880 To 1940., Tracy Joan Demars
There Was Something In The Water: Parallels In Paradigms In English And Physics, 1880 To 1940., Tracy Joan Demars
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study posits that a paradigm is a shared vision of reality that governs how practitioners define and relate to the many and varied components that make up that reality. Using this definition, the author presents a visual model using concentric spheres of increasing abstraction that rearrange T. S. Kuhn's four components of a disciplinary matrix that he articulated in the 1969 Postscript to The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Based on this model and D'Amico's criteria for a coherent narrative, the study assesses the two primary paradigms, labeled the Object-Oriented paradigm and the Subject-Oriented paradigm, that existed in the fields …
