Assessing Computer -Mediated Communication Discourse Of A Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor, Cheryl L. Fickey Prichard
Assessing Computer -Mediated Communication Discourse Of A Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor, Cheryl L. Fickey Prichard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Speech-language pathologists and audiologists have begun using computer technology for information storage and retrieval and as one means of providing clinical services to communication-disordered patients. The purpose of this study is to develop a protocol to assess the written communication of brain-injured clients whose communication therapy milieu includes interactions with the world outside the treatment room through computer-mediated communication (CMC).;A panel of experts reviewed a series of discourse analysis procedures and rated their perceptions of validity, reliability, and ease-of use for the procedures as means of evaluating CMC discourse. The Computer-Mediated Communication Evaluation Protocol (CMC-EP) was developed based on the …
Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett
Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As a decidedly American tradition, the long poem has become the premier literary endeavor for poets in the twentieth-century. Writers such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams have pursued the long poem, but under the auspices of the "modern epic." Three postmodern long poems---Kenneth Koch's Seasons on Earth, Edward Dom's Gunslinger, and James Merrill's The Changing Light at Sandover---illustrate a dramatic rupture with the texts of modernism by introducing comic situations and multi-voiced narration---situations described by Mikhail Bakhtin as "dialogism" and "carnival," receptively---into the canon of American long poems. These innovations allow the postmodern long poem …
Perception And Analysis Of Spanish Accents In English Speech, Corinne Ann Kropf
Perception And Analysis Of Spanish Accents In English Speech, Corinne Ann Kropf
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of the present study was to determine what relates most closely to the degree of perceived foreign accent in the English speech of native Spanish speakers: intonation, vowel length, stress, voice onset time (VOT), or segmental accuracy. Nineteen native English speaking listeners rated speech samples from 7 native English speakers and 15 native Spanish speakers for comprehensibility and degree of foreign accent. The speech samples were analyzed spectrographically and auditorally to obtain numerical values for each variable. These values and the average foreign accent scores were submitted to Pearson correlations. Results show that the average foreign accent scores …
Effects Of Cumulative Practice On Mathematics Problem -Solving Behavior, Kristin Hobbs Hazlett
Effects Of Cumulative Practice On Mathematics Problem -Solving Behavior, Kristin Hobbs Hazlett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mathematics education has long been in need of improved methods of instruction, particularly in the area of problem-solving skills. This study compared three methods of training rules about laws of exponents and order of operations. All three training methods used the same mastery criterion for training each rule and included the same number of practice trials during review sessions that preceded each test. The difference between conditions involved what types of problems were presented during the reviews. For each review session, the cumulative group (n = 11) practiced 50 problems covering all rules learned up to that review. The simple …
Inservice And Preservice Teacher Attitudes Toward Creative Writing As A Learning Mechanism, Edwin Davis Greenlee
Inservice And Preservice Teacher Attitudes Toward Creative Writing As A Learning Mechanism, Edwin Davis Greenlee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most of us in the teaching profession are aware by now that writing is inextricably interlocked with learning, thinking, and knowing. The more students write, the more knowledge they acquire. As Janet Emig informs us: "Writing serves learning uniquely because writing as process-and-product possesses a cluster of attributes that correspond uniquely to certain powerful learning strategies" (1983, 34). In other words, Emig (1971) believes that when using writing to learn, students can become involved in learning activities. Writing as learning permits students to integrate, connect, reconsider, evaluate, and personally shape their thoughts and ideas. By writing and rewriting, students can …
Speech Acts As A Focus Of Variation Studies: Aae Vs. Eae., Brian Jose
Speech Acts As A Focus Of Variation Studies: Aae Vs. Eae., Brian Jose
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent research in linguistics, and specifically within the field of applied linguistics, has been concerned with the different ways that speech acts are realized in different languages. This is so that language learners can learn to adequately conform to those norms in the target language. However, much of this research has assumed that all speakers of the relevant languages, such as American English, for example, are homogeneous, that they all perform the given speech acts in the same ways. I argue that this is an erroneous assumption: just as there is phonological variation, for example, between dialects of a language, …
Knowledge Acquisition From Video, Video With Animated Graphics, And Laboratory Experience: Predictors For Adolescents With Mild Mental Impairments., John D. Foshay
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The movement toward assistive technology (AT) and access to the general curriculum provided by the 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has resulted in the need to study instructional methods that employ computer-based multimedia. Although the definition of AT includes interactive multimedia (Blackhurst, 1997), there has been little research on the use of multimedia to provide access to the general education curriculum. The existing literature has provided a theoretical base and investigated the ability of multimedia presentations to improve academic skills, but has failed to identify instructional practices that promote such access through AT. This dissertation …
"I'M Right There": Central Appalachian Women In Public School Leadership., Kathy L. Seelinger
"I'M Right There": Central Appalachian Women In Public School Leadership., Kathy L. Seelinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite a deluge of national attention to equity issues, public school administration is still the domain of men. Research attention to women in leadership has done little to close the gender gap in superintendents' and secondary school principals' offices, perhaps because of its focus on successful men rather than on the women who hold these positions. Qualitative interviews examine seven central Appalachian women school leaders in light of feminist standpoint theory, focusing on the way the women enter leadership, articulate a personal construction of the leadership role, and negotiate the borders between their own constructions and the prevailing ones. Profiles …
Teacher Training Through Literature: Building Teacher Awareness On The Process Of Shift In Identity On Esl Learners., Luis Ruiz J. Vazquez
Teacher Training Through Literature: Building Teacher Awareness On The Process Of Shift In Identity On Esl Learners., Luis Ruiz J. Vazquez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this work I defend the notion of the necessity for ESL learners to undergo some sort of identity shift process. This process would be a smooth and gradual evolution by reason of which ESL learners (and, by extension, learners of any foreign language) would develop a second identity that would encompass all the aspects associated to the L2 of their choice, apart from its exclusively linguistic and structural components. I introduce mainly the necessity of building awareness among teachers, especially—but not exclusively—among monolingual foreign language instructors. The strategy that I propose to promote this awareness is the guided reading …
Legibility: How Precedents Established In Print Impact On-Screen And Dynamic Typography, Heidi Specht
Legibility: How Precedents Established In Print Impact On-Screen And Dynamic Typography, Heidi Specht
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The printed word has been commonplace in society for over 500 years; the written word has been in existence for thousands. The primary intent of the written or printed word has historically been to be read. With that goal, rules and formats have developed over the centuries as aids to legibility. Naturally, these guidelines have been developed for the printed, or static typographic page. As our sophistication with and acceptance of technology grows, however, we increasingly turn to the computer or television screen for written information. Additionally, graphic designers and artists are questioning the role of the printed word as …
A Model For A Fles Program In Morgantown, West Virginia., Isabel Cristina Cadavid-Munera
A Model For A Fles Program In Morgantown, West Virginia., Isabel Cristina Cadavid-Munera
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is an increasing interest in the development and implementation of foreign language programs in elementary school throughout the U.S. However, as some experts on the field of teaching foreign languages to children have pointed out, very often those programs are implemented without prior planning or thorough investigation. The present study was conducted in five schools in Morgantown, West Virginia, in order to determine the major strengths and weaknesses of the foreign language after school classes currently carried out at those schools. Questionnaires (to parents, classroom teachers, Spanish instructors, and site coordinators), class observations and interviews were the ethnographic techniques …
Language Attitude Study: The Perceptions Of The New Jersey And The Southern West Virginia Students, At West Virginia University, Of The New Jersey And Southern West Virginia Dialects., Leigh Anne Scalise
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The language attitude study of the two dialect groups: New Jersey and southern West Virginia on the West Virginia University, encompasses the lexicon of each group and the breakdown of communication between the two groups. The differences in lexicon and societal stereotypes keep the two groups from interacting on a personal and equal level of respect and kindness. The West Virginia students foster a strong resentment towards the students from New Jersey, and the feelings are reciprocated in that the New Jersey students prefer to associate with students from their home state. The dialect study proves the members of each …
Culture-Specific Issues In Feminist Voices: A Comparative Study Of "The Bell Jar" And "Cronica Del Desamor"., Sonia Lagunas
Culture-Specific Issues In Feminist Voices: A Comparative Study Of "The Bell Jar" And "Cronica Del Desamor"., Sonia Lagunas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis discusses the importance of the cultural elements within a literary text when an analysis of the text is accomplished. Two novels are analyzed in terms of their cultural setting: The Bell Jar , an American novel set in the 1950s written by Sylvia Plath, and Crónica del desamor , a Spanish novel set in the late 1970s, written by Rosa Montero. A cultural analysis of the novels appears necessary in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of them. At the same time, a cultural analysis based on literary works is a valuable instrument in investigating the cultural …
Application Of Computer-Based Technology To The Teaching Of Writing In Spanish As A Foreign Language: A Case Study, Nuria Gago
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Computers are becoming more and more important in today's world. They are part of every sector of our society, including education. Most of the studies done so far on computer integration with educational purposes focus on the classification, and incorporation, from a theoretical point of view, of Computer Mediated Communication in the class. Unfortunately, very little empirical research has been done concerning the students' perspectives and reactions when introduced to the use of multimedia technology in the classroom. The present project was started in an effort to analyze and observer the reactions of a group of learners when exposed, in …
The Metamorphosis Of Jewish Identities In Nineteenth Century Russia, 1801-1894., James Russell Weiss
The Metamorphosis Of Jewish Identities In Nineteenth Century Russia, 1801-1894., James Russell Weiss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
During the period between the ascension of Tsar Alexander I and Tsar Nicholas II, the Jews of Russia and Russian officials were engaged in a curious partnership. Both parties were concerned with determining the precise definition of Jewishness and how this would change during the course of the nineteenth century. Russian officials, in the main, wanted to refashion the Jews of Russia into Russophiles imbued with Russian mores and education but, on no account, were these "new Jews" to be considered true Russians since God had made them a distinct group from their Slavic neighbors. Being compelled to be a …
'A Perfect Diamond Set In Lead': Henry, Prince Of Wales And The Performance Of Emergent Majesty., Gregory Vaughn Mcnamara
'A Perfect Diamond Set In Lead': Henry, Prince Of Wales And The Performance Of Emergent Majesty., Gregory Vaughn Mcnamara
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early Stuart court culture and the representation of majesty and power have been the subjects of considerable scholarly debate in recent years, yet Henry, Prince of Wales, one of the most significant figures of this dynamic historical period, has remained largely in the margins of scholarship and criticism. The heightened sensitivity to the fusion of power and aesthetics in the representation of early modern majesty that has characterized new historicist and revisionist scholarship has revealed tensions and disruptions within the framework of the court itself. Representational strategies at court operated in the context of social systems, often functioning harmoniously but …
Where The Stranger Bides: Resisting America With The Autobiographical Word., Lisa N. Muir
Where The Stranger Bides: Resisting America With The Autobiographical Word., Lisa N. Muir
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The recent republication of the works of Anzia Yezierska and Rose Cohen, as well as the first ever publications of the autobiographies of Bella Spewack and Rachel Cohen, demonstrate the current interest in the autobiographical experiences of turn-of-the-century female immigrant writers. These women were not politicos of the Progressive Era, nor were they literary revolutionaries in the stricter sense of writing against a patriarchal literary environment. Instead, these women pay particular attention to how ethnicity was constructed for them by cultural attitudes existing outside the text. Their autobiographical works confirm for the diverse readers of today that ethnicity is not …
The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir
The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A multidimensional theoretical model, Conceptual Change Science Learning (CCSL), was developed based on Standard Model of Conceptual Change and Cognitive Reconstruction of Knowledge Model. The model addresses three main components of science learning, namely the learner's conceptual ecology, the message along with its social context, and the cognitive engagement. A learner's conceptual ecology is organized around three clusters, including epistemological beliefs, existing conceptions, and motivation. Learner's cognitive engagement is represented by a continuum from peripheral processing involving shallow cognitive engagement to central processing involving deep cognitive engagement. Through reciprocal, non-sequential interactions of such constructs, the learners' conceptual change is achieved. …

Designing A Cultural Needs Questionnaire, Sabah Karayegen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study describes the development of a cultural needs questionnaire intended to get a profile of foreign students' awareness of American culture. Specifically, the original questionnaire was designed to assess the level of awareness that English as a Second Language (ESL) students have of three aspects of American culture: family, gender roles, and education. The purpose of the development of student profiles resulting from this questionnaire was to offer one source of feedback to ESL teachers concerning these particularly relevant areas in which newly arrived students may be culturally confused. The piloting of the questionnaire revealed several problems inherent in …
The Implementation Of Learning Strategies In The Design Of An On-Line Medical Course Supplement, Lee Ann Hill
The Implementation Of Learning Strategies In The Design Of An On-Line Medical Course Supplement, Lee Ann Hill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Given the charge of integrating technology in the medical school curriculum, faculty members are faced with the challenge of designing new materials for their courses. Often, these materials become on-line resources such as hypermedia and electronic communication. Strategies may assist students who are unfamiliar with on-line materials to use such materials more effectively. This study investigated the elaborative interrogation strategy used in conjunction with on-line materials to promote more efficient processing of difficult material. Twenty second-year medical students volunteered to participate in the study. The course in which they were enrolled required the use of an on-line lecture supplement. The …
Theory Of Mind Development And Executive Functioning In Elementary School Children, Dana Lee Futoran
Theory Of Mind Development And Executive Functioning In Elementary School Children, Dana Lee Futoran
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The following study explored the role of verbal ability and executive functioning in theory of mind understanding in elementary school children. Scores on measures of language comprehension, verbal ability (sentence memory, and forward digit span), matrix completion, executive functioning (backward digit span), and second-order theory of mind tasks were obtained. Partial correlations of the measures controlling for age revealed verbal ability to be significantly correlated with theory of mind comprehension. A regression analysis demonstrated that auditory language comprehension was the only variable, in addition to age, that explained unique variance in performance on a recursive thinking task. Possible explanations are …

The development of a prototype Decision Support System (DSS) for the condition assessment of the Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB) has been demonstrated in the current work. AVLB is a mobile bridge that has been used by the US Army for tank and assault vehicle crossing. It is employed for spanning short gaps of 50 feet or less in the terrain. The condition assessment of such bridges, to ensure safety of personnel and tank, is of strategic importance. The methodology of the prototype DSS is based on a refined visual inspection procedure and a previously established vibration measurement technique.;Conforming to …
Modifying Risk Perceptions Of Japanese University Students Using A Culturally Compatible Mode Of Instruction, Susan F. Walsh
Modifying Risk Perceptions Of Japanese University Students Using A Culturally Compatible Mode Of Instruction, Susan F. Walsh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Japanese university students who come to the United States present a particular challenge to universities to teach them about their risks to personal property. The usual method of delivering this message, a lecture during the orientation period, may not be the most effective way of presenting the information due to their limitations in understanding English. It was hypothesized that a manga, or comic book, would be an effective and culturally compatible mode of instruction.;A manga was developed and was tested on a group of incoming Japanese freshmen. Forty students (12 females, 28 males) were divided into two groups. One group …
A Study Of The Japanese Reflexive Pronouns, Zibun And Zibun-Zisin, Masaru Yamada
A Study Of The Japanese Reflexive Pronouns, Zibun And Zibun-Zisin, Masaru Yamada
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The behavior of various types of anaphors may be classified into two types, local and long-distance anaphors. The English reflexive 'himself' and the Japanese reflexive 'zibun' representatively characterize the two types of anaphors. They contrast in that 'himself' is a local anaphor, whereas 'zibun' is a long-distance anaphor. Japanese has another reflexive pronoun, `zibun-zisin', and it behaves more similarly to himself. The standard binding theory (Chomsky (1981)) regulates the behavior of local anaphors; however, the behavior of long-distance anaphors cannot be explained. One proposal for this matter is to invoke parameterization, which defines a language-specific binding domain for anaphors. Within …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A collaborative effort between the Departments of Theatre and Foreign Languages, the study, using ethnographic techniques, documents the process of developing cultural awareness of a young group of actors as they rehearsed a post Spanish Civil War play. Analysis of data collected over five weeks through interviews, a demographic questionnaire, and observations by both the thesis director and the researcher reveal that with motivation and a little guidance students will connect, and further, understand another culture. These findings are significant since the use of theatre in this fashion offers a means to motivate students and peak interest in target culture, …

All subtests except Arithmetic and Coding were significantly correlated with placement. Both the Verbal Conceptualization Index (WVCI) and the Perceptual Organization Index (WPOI) Scores were found to be significantly correlated with placement. In addition, discriminant function analyses were computed. Both WVCI and WPOI were found to be significant predictors of placement. Of the WISC-III subtests, all were significant predictors except Information (WINFO) …
The Reflective Journal: The Emotions And Consciousness States Of Poets Within A Transpersonal Writing Design., Mary Catherine Wuenstel
The Reflective Journal: The Emotions And Consciousness States Of Poets Within A Transpersonal Writing Design., Mary Catherine Wuenstel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Reflective Journal methodology is an educational tool that was created to examine poets as they wrote poetry within a transpersonal writing design. Although language arts theory approaches have dealt primarily with the interactive and subjective nature of language through reading and writing activities, few have addressed the potential of the use of language as a vehicle for personal change through self-expression. This study attempted to investigate the psychological experiences, which may occur when poets are engaged in writing poetry and their opinions on personal change after the experience of writing. While writing, the poets in the study displayed that …
La Influencia De La Arquitectura En Tres Novelas De La Posguerra., Maria De Las Mercedes Rodriguez Fuentes
La Influencia De La Arquitectura En Tres Novelas De La Posguerra., Maria De Las Mercedes Rodriguez Fuentes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
