Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this research was to determine whether specific learning disabled students would respond more quickly, accurately, and in the correct sequence to visual and auditory stimuli according to their predetermined modality preference within the context of the gymnasium and using motor skills. Male and female SLD college students (N = 58) were the participants for the study. Students attending Muskingum College were divided into four groups according to their modality preference toward auditory instruction or visual instruction. Modality preference was determined by the Incomplete Word and Visual Closure subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Ability. One of …
Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K
Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the novels Lady Oracle, The Handmaid's Tale, and Cat's Eye, I locate and name the sites of memory to show how Atwood's protagonists appropriate them as their loci of resistance. The localized sites though marginalized are within the realm of representation; however, the "space-offs," a term I borrow from film theory, are beyond "the ideological." In these sites women create and/or validate counter-discourses that enable them to set up "politics of oppositionality" and provide them with a distance necessary to question the hegemonic. The localization of the sites eventually leads to the body as site. I acknowledge the changing …
Repeated Reading Intervention Using Taped Books To Increase Emergent Literacy Skills With Children At-Risk., Laura Anne Reissner
Repeated Reading Intervention Using Taped Books To Increase Emergent Literacy Skills With Children At-Risk., Laura Anne Reissner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Providing children at-risk for reading difficulties with books and video tapes gives children the exposure to print which may be lacking in home and early school experiences. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of using books on tape to provide print experiences to children at-risk for reading difficulty. Two treatments were provided using books on video and audio tape. Sixty-three children who participated in a kindergarten or first grade Title 1 program in Taylor County, West Virginia were randomly assigned to one of three conditions, books on audio tape, books on video tape, or control group. …
A Neural Network Approach For Implementing A High Dimension Reduction Feature Finder For Automatic Image Matching., Qiang Lin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the Counter Propagation Network (CPN) to implement an image feature finder for automatic image matching systems. This research concludes that the CPN paradigm does not appear to be capable of extracting distinctive features for matching complex images such as fingerprints. There are three possible factors explored in the document that contribute to this inability to match. These are: (1) Image Enhancement - Most of fingerprint images have certain levels of localized blur or smear, locally low contrast, or other noise. Currently available image enhancement methods are shown to not suppress these noises effectively. (2) Image Invariance - …
A Historical Study Of Educational Reform Policy In Morocco., Abdellah Benahnia
A Historical Study Of Educational Reform Policy In Morocco., Abdellah Benahnia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Though information about literacy development in Morocco can be often found in professional publications, little has been done in regard to the impact of the socio-cultural, economic, and political variables on the development of educational policy in that country. This study has historically examined the educational reform policy in the independent Kingdom of Morocco in order to see how the above variables have affected the implementation of most major policies that had taken place. It also examined the role of the indigenous Islamic traditional type of education; the role of Salafiyya movement in creating a unique type of nationalism; and …

Assessing The Impact Of The West Virginia K-12 Ruralnet Project On Teachers' Views., Thomas P. Ditty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Teachers play a key role in implementing curriculum changes in the science classroom. The evaluation of teachers' views regarding the relationships that exist between science, technology, and society can strengthen the link between curricular reforms and the content that students' acquire in their learning experiences and contribute to the improvement of preservice and inservice teacher education programs. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if participation in the West Virginia K-12 RuralNet Project has impacted teachers' views about science, technology, and society interactions. This investigation employed a matched-group quasi-experimental research design which involved 58 West Virginia (K-12) teachers. The …
Development Of Cost-Based Multi-Defect-Type Control Chart Using Fuzzy Set Theory., Mustafa Saadeddin Shraim
Development Of Cost-Based Multi-Defect-Type Control Chart Using Fuzzy Set Theory., Mustafa Saadeddin Shraim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traditional attribute control charts for nonconformities or defects, such as c or u charts, assume that all defect types are binary in nature. However, some defect types have varying degree of seriousness within them. As a result, the plotted value on the control chart may not capture the true quality status of the product in question. Moreover, in many situations, large products may have multiple types of defects. These defects may be different from one another in terms of their severity. The classification process in attribute inspection tasks for the traditional control charts does not consider the variability within some …

The Effects Of Collaborative Learning On Writing Quality, Writing Apprehension, And Writing Attitude Of College Students In A Developmental English Program., Martha Boger Shrewsbury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined sixteen basic writers in a college developmental English program to ascertain what effect collaborative learning strategies would have on the writing apprehension, writing anxiety, and writing quality. Students operated in a collaborative environment: They followed a writing process and arrived at consensus within their group at each stage of writing. All writers still worried about their writing, but they collectively agreed that they spent more time on writing and rewriting. In short, writers had a vision of what they were expected to accomplish and demonstrated that writing was a powerful tool. This study encourages students and faculty …

This study addressed the effect of metaphor on the quality of writing in 1st-/2nd-graders (Group A, N = 7), 2nd-/3rd-graders (Group B, N = 17), 3rd-/4th-graders (Group C, N = 9), and 4th-/5th-graders (Group D, N = 12). These grade levels are representative of the literal or conventional phase of expression wherein there is a typical resistance shown toward the use of metaphor. This study also focused on the relationship between frequency of metaphor and writing quality, and the effects of grade on quality scores over time. Each group received instruction in metaphor competence and wrote in response to a …
Cognitive Psychology And Hypermedia: Merging The Disciplines., David J. Ayersman
Cognitive Psychology And Hypermedia: Merging The Disciplines., David J. Ayersman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Typically, hypermedia research has involved brief treatments while examining attitudes, perceptions, and specific content-area performances of students. There is very little research which examines preservice teachers' experiences of learning about hypermedia and cognitive theory as tools to be applied to education. This dissertation examines a variety of issues involved in learning and teaching with and about hypermedia. It consists of four separate studies that provide an in-depth view of preservice teachers' cognitive, metacognitive, supracognitive, and cogitative experiences as they completed a Hypermedia in Education course. These terms are defined in the Introduction section of the dissertation where additional information is …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reading to learn is a major curricular goal in the fourth and fifth grades. Vocabulary development is an important aspect of this goal. Learning the meaning of unfamiliar words is not an easy task for all learners, especially for some students with a language learning disability. This multiple baseline single case/small group investigation was designed to study the effectiveness of semantic mapping instruction as a technique for learning new words. Fourth and fifth grade students met with their regular classroom teacher in small groups to construct semantic maps. At each grade level, the group consisted of a student with a …

The Chanson Rustique In Polyphonic Arrangements Of Four Or More Parts, Ca. 1470-Ca. 1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., Mark Leland Whitney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fifteenth- and sixteenth-century composers of French secular music sometimes based their compositions on monophonic popular chansons, or chansons rustiques. The resulting "popular arrangements" were most often composed in three voices, but a significant number in four or more voices are extant as well. This study examines the style, sources, and legacy of popular arrangements in four or more voices composed between ca. 1470 and ca. 1570. Chapter 1 discusses the methods by which four-part popular arrangements are identified. This is followed by a stylistic overview of the four-part popular arrangement and a brief account of the "pseudo-arrangement," a genre which …

Acquisition Of Word Concept In Two Kindergarten Classrooms., Elwin Leonard Dickerson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explored how differing teaching methodologies affect word concept development during the first semester of kindergarten. Comparing fourteen kindergarten students matched on age, concepts about print, cognitive level and home factors in kindergartens differing in teaching philosophy, the researcher administered tasks to assess development of concept of word. Those tasks structured to assess word concept development, were administered every other week. Clay's "Concepts About Print" (CAP) task provided the pre- and post test assessment. The seven students exposed to a holistic philosophy and seven students exposed to a skill building philosophy demonstrated no significant differences when their word concept …
Development Of A Measure Of Therapist Trustworthiness, Gregory M. Alberts
Development Of A Measure Of Therapist Trustworthiness, Gregory M. Alberts
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Graduate and professional therapist training programs emphasize the acquisition of technical skills (Stevenson & Norcross, 1987) and deemphasize the promotion of interpersonal and relationship competencies (Lambert, 1989; Schiffman, 1987 ) . The content of such training programs and the procedures by which the competencies of prospective mental health practitioners are developed and evaluated have been critic ized because neither are based on an adequate fund of clinically relevant empirical knowledge (Ford, 1979; Garfield, 1977; Matarazzo, 1978; Ponterotto & Furlong, 1985; Scofield & Yoxtheimer, 1983).
Rewriting The Self, Writing The Other: An Investigation Of Recent American Epistolary Novels., Anne Lieberman Bower
Rewriting The Self, Writing The Other: An Investigation Of Recent American Epistolary Novels., Anne Lieberman Bower
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A number of recent critical works apply twentieth century literary theories to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century epistolary novels. However, in spite of the existence of a number of intriguing twentieth-century letter novels, there have been no in-depth studies of modern uses of this form, and only a limited number of articles that analyze the epistolarity of modern and contemporary novel fictions. What makes this condition surprising is that many of the form's features are so sympathetic to aesthetic and philosophic issues of our day. Using deconstructive, reader-response and feminist perspectives, this dissertation investigates the ways the letter novel is used by …

Teaching Language And Culture With Authentic Materials., Olgalucia Gaitan Gonzalez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The major purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the effects of using authentic materials as textbooks supplements on foreign language students' attitude, motivation, and culture and language achievement. Crawford-Lange and Lange's integrative process (1984) was used as a framework because it integrates the teaching of language with the teaching of culture. Forty-three students enrolled in their second semester of Spanish participated in the investigation. Four intact classes were used in the study and were randomly assigned to either the control or the experimental group. A traditional first-year Spanish textbook was used to teach all classes and the same …

Curricula Of Selected Korean Ethnic Schools In The United States: A Curriculum Assessment Study., Minza Kim Boo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Demographic, historical, and educational data on Korean ethnic education programs in the United States posed some possible curricular problems concerning such questions as: "How well did Korean ethnic schools define the curricular purposes, organize the curricular content, select the curricular methodology, and practice the evaluation of curricular outcomes?" Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of Korean ethnic schools in terms of whether the Korean ethnic school curricula used essential curricular principles and guidelines; and whether the Korean ethnic education programs were implemented to respond to multi-dimensional ethnic needs of Korean immigrants. The procedures …

A History Of The Samia Location In Western Kenya, 1890-1930., Jacob Raymond Seitz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This is a study of development and change on the local level in East Africa during the introduction and establishment of colonialism. Over the years the emphasis in African History has gradually shifted from the study of imperial policy and the Europeans' role to that of the African inhabitants. Until recently, this new focus has resulted principally in valuable studies of the precolonial life and migrations. Now it is the first decades of the twentieth century that are under scrutiny. This period, spanning the establishment of the colonial system, undoubtably had a great impact on independent Kenya.
Oyotunji Village: The Yoruba Movement In America., Carl Monroe Hunt
Oyotunji Village: The Yoruba Movement In America., Carl Monroe Hunt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Oyotunji Village, the Yoruba movement in America, is a history of the life of Oseijeman Adefunmi, (Walter Serge King), and the Yoruba movement he founded. Although this movement concentrates mainly on cultural nationalism, it has similarities to nineteenth and early twentieth century Black Nationalist movements. These similarities include their attempts to bring about change thru the rejection of American culture, the establishment of all-Black governments within America or Africa, the acceptance of African or Asiatic culture, and the rejection of the name Negro as a means of identifying their national origin. Adefunmi, the founder of the Yoruba movement, was born …

The Kootenay Plains (Alberta) Land Question And Canadian Indian Policy, 1799-1947., John William Larner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This paper contends that the Stoney (Assiniboine) people of southwestern Alberta, Canada, have a legitimate aboriginal claim to areas in the North Saskatchewan River headwaters known as Bighorn and Kootenay Plains, located between the first range of the Rocky Mountains and the Alberta-British Columbia boundary. The Stoneys appear to have followed two routes during their eighteenth-century westward migration from southeastern Manitoba. One group moved southwestwardly to central Montana, turning northward into the Alberta Rockies; while the other seems to have travelled along the prairie-parkland fringe, entering the mountains west of Edmonton, with one band taking possession of the upper North …
