Analysis And Robust Decentralized Control Of Power Systems Using Facts Devices, Karl E. Schoder
Analysis And Robust Decentralized Control Of Power Systems Using Facts Devices, Karl E. Schoder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Today's changing electric power systems create a growing need for flexible, reliable, fast responding, and accurate answers to questions of analysis, simulation, and design in the fields of electric power generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. The Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) technology program utilizes power electronics components to replace conventional mechanical elements yielding increased flexibility in controlling the electric power system. Benefits include decreased response times and improved overall dynamic system behavior. FACTS devices allow the design of new control strategies, e.g., independent control of active and reactive power flows, which were not realizable a decade ago. However, FACTS …
Recurrent Participation In Rockcamp: Perceptions Of A K-12 Professional Development Program In Geology., Thomas Edward Repine
Recurrent Participation In Rockcamp: Perceptions Of A K-12 Professional Development Program In Geology., Thomas Edward Repine
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The geological experiences of six teachers with a history of sustained participation in the RockCamp geology professional development program were investigated. The research premise was based on Gordon's (1961, 1971) and Joyce and Weil's (1996) descriptions of the usefulness of synectics to present new ways of looking at familiar situations. The overarching goal was to delineate both reasons for participation and tropologically characterizations of their recurrent (sustained) participation. Qualitative data reflecting participatory perceptions were obtained using a series of three semi-structured interviews and an individually variable number of follow-up sessions. Additional data were derived from participant-constructed concept maps and a …

An Analysis Of An Interview Between A Carthusian Monk And A Benedictine Monk Utilizing Fillmore's Frame Model In Discourse Analysis., Joseph John Pielech
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis analyzed a three-hour audiotape interview (Appendices I and II) between Fr. Benedict Neenan, a professed Benedictine monk and Pr. Raphael Diamond, a Carthusian monk from the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration in Arlington, VT. The theoretical framework employed as the vehicle of analysis is Fillmoreís Frame Model (1976, 1977). By implementing Fillmoreís model, we are able to explain how and why certain frames arose as well as account for any breakdown in the discourse which resulted from inaccurate or incomplete mental representations the participants had. Fillmoreís model incorporates the linguistic, metalinguistic, and psycho-social elements of language, however he does …
The Relationships Among Self-Percieved Body Image, Interaction Involvement, And Interpersonal Communication Motives., Suzanna D'Ette Miller
The Relationships Among Self-Percieved Body Image, Interaction Involvement, And Interpersonal Communication Motives., Suzanna D'Ette Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among self-perceived body image, interaction involvement, and interpersonal communication motives. Participants (N = 137) completed the Self-Perceived Body Image Scale (Richmond, 1998), the Interaction Involvement Scale (Cegala, 1981), and the Interpersonal Communication Motives Scale (Rubin, Perse, & Barbato, 1988). Results indicated that self-perceived body image was negatively related with the inclusion and relaxation motives, but was not significantly correlated with the pleasure, affection, escape, and control motives. It was also found that women have a significantly lower self-perceived body image than men. Limitations and directions for future research were also …

Recognizing the complexity of the position, the study also used chaos and complexity theory to critically analyze the findings and to discern if the theory provided an understanding of these changes and their impact. This was a mixed-method two-stage study conducted electronically with both qualitative and quantitative instruments. The first stage used the Delphi method of research to …
The Dynamics Of Orality, Language, And Identity In David Huet’S Zaza, La Réunion Des Années 50 And Erna Brodber’S Jane And Louisa Will Soon Come Home, Weena Isabelle Gaulin
The Dynamics Of Orality, Language, And Identity In David Huet’S Zaza, La Réunion Des Années 50 And Erna Brodber’S Jane And Louisa Will Soon Come Home, Weena Isabelle Gaulin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study contends that Reunionese and Caribbean identities can be construed in part through an examination of orality and language in the literature of the islands. In preparation for an analysis of the dynamics of Creole and other oral features in Huet`s Zaza, la Réunion des années 50 and Brodber’s Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home, some linguistic preliminaries establish Creoles as full-fledged languages, a step that helps explain the post-colonial subject’s behavior towards a language initially imposed by the colonizer. A comparison of the nature, mechanics, and purposes of oral structural devices in the two literary works leads …

Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke
Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The European settlers who emigrated to America in the seventeenth century were decidedly patriarchal. Nevertheless, significant cultural differences in expressions of patriarchy among them existed. Specifically, the Dutch of New Netherland defined the gendered roles of women differently than did other European cultures. More than deputy-husbands, but less than full partner, seventeenth-century Dutch women in New Netherland were integral to the survival and promotion of their families' interests and preservation of the colony. English expropriation of New Netherland in 1664 and permanent acquisition in 1674 inaugurate a process of patriarchal acculturation that over time submerged the roles of Dutch women. …

The purpose of this research is to develop fuzzy logic cost models that estimate the cost of a component based on the component's geometric shape, size, material and manufacturing process. The research is focused on components made from high production quantity processes i.e. stamping, injection molding, rolling and extrusion. However, the method may also be used for other types of manufacturing processes. The method is useful to both engineers and cost estimators whenever an estimated cost is desired. Engineers and cost estimators may use the method to obtain the cost of components or products of similar design without a detailed …
Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope
Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Taking as its point of departure Henri Lefebvre's contention that "(Social) space is a (social) product," my dissertation explores the contemporary American novels of Pynchon, Acker, Reed, Auster, DeLillo, and McElroy as well as the two recent films Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor and their dramatization of the production of twentieth-century social space. I approach these works as metaphysical detective stories which evoke the classic detective figure only to frustrate his impulse to solve and contain. Following Foucault's contention that "space is fundamental to any exercise of power," I suggest that the detective figure is significant to an understanding …

Next, his musicals Me, Marlene, Mambo Mortale and Don't Panik, and his plays Tonight Neither Hamlet …
Generic Pronouns And Their Influence On The Speakers' Language Awareness, Maike Engelhardt
Generic Pronouns And Their Influence On The Speakers' Language Awareness, Maike Engelhardt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The English language is a genderless language in which nouns receive grammatical gender through natural gender assignment. The generic pronoun encoded in English is the pronoun he, which next to its secondary meaning of the generic also has the primary meaning of the third person masculine singular. Following the moderate version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, English speaking societies may therefore be considered androcentric societies, since the unmarked use of the generic he makes everyone in this society male until explicitly proven otherwise. In this thesis I explore the history of the generic pronoun in English and offer suggestions for a …

The Institutional Production Of Literary Value: Studies Of African-American Popular Music Lyrics And The Avant-Garde., Carl Silvio
The Institutional Production Of Literary Value: Studies Of African-American Popular Music Lyrics And The Avant-Garde., Carl Silvio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent decades have witnessed series of debates over the nature of the texts studied by literary studies. Some argue that the literary text is first and foremost defined by its aesthetic value, while others claim that the discipline should regard its object as a social document which reveals information about the society that produced it and exerts an ideological effect upon its cultural context. These debates, between what are usually termed “traditional†and “cultural studies†approaches to literature reveal a central contradiction that has divided the discourse of aesthetic value since its formulation in the Eighteenth century. The question of …

"Playing To The Cameras": The Presence Of An Entertainment Perspective In Political Panel Programming And The Implications Of Making Politics Palatable And Appealing., Marcus Edward Snyder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The proliferation of political television talk shows as a modern media form appears to have had a profound influence on the dimensions and depth of public discourse. While the majority of these public affairs programs position themselves as forums for the serious discussion of consequential events and ideas, many media critics have suggested that these programs have diminished the quality of the national political dialogue by presenting and interpreting information according to television’s penchant for drama and amusement. Although public affairs programs have been the target of much criticism, their has been little academic exploration of the ways which these …

This study was undertaken to examine the differences between the parental rankings for each of eight characteristics across three points in time for children with autism to determine who succeeds with this kind of treatment and who does not. These parental reports were …
Mapping Appalachia, Jennifer Hall Boggess
Mapping Appalachia, Jennifer Hall Boggess
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The complexities of natural and human events that make up the history of a place also create components of its image. Images, even those that are meant to describe limited, specific information, often reveal more than that which they were designed to tell. The maps that have been used in conjunction with traditional notions of landscape painting suggest that there is no single way to understand a place. They also hint of something ineffable but true emerging from their forms. The history of movement of people and natural forces, the arriving and leaving of individuals and cultures change the landscape. …
