Spatial structure in remotely sensed imagery is shown to impact the change detection procedure. Methods to incorporate spatial statistics into correlation-based and regression-based change detection that control for the spatial structure in this data are proposed. These procedures are presented by means of an urban change detection case study utilizing Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+ imagery in the area to the west of the Baltimore, MD I Washington D.C. metropolitan area between 1989 and 2002. In the correlation-based analysis, the results show that the use of point-to-point correlation is often inappropriate in the examination of spatial datasets. In addition, spatial …
Kinship Migration To Northwestern Virginia, 1785-1815: The Myth Of The Southern Frontiersman, Philip W. Sturm
Kinship Migration To Northwestern Virginia, 1785-1815: The Myth Of The Southern Frontiersman, Philip W. Sturm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
For nearly 100 years American historians, with few exceptions, have maintained that migration of colonists to the trans-Appalachian frontier was a communal experience for those from New England and Northern regions but that the Southern frontiersman represented a non-communal, individualistic spirit of colonization. This dissertation traces the migration and settlement patterns of the earliest colonists along the northwestern Virginia frontier, the area organized as Wood County in 1799, from three Eastern regions, New England, the Middle Atlantic, and the Northern Neck of Virginia. It determines that emigrants from all regions migrated cohesively and sequentially in large kinship/neighbor groups and that …

Numerical Analysis Of Source-Water Dynamics For Stream-Bounded Alluvial Aquifers, Sarah E. Webb
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Alluvial aquifers bounded by streams are water supply sources for numerous communities in the Ohio Valley, West Virginia. Groundwater flow models are tools for estimation of source areas, however, existing analytical solutions apply only in settings involving a single stream boundary. A series of numerical experiments was devised for wells near multiple surface sources examining the controlling aspects of well-location and boundary condition interaction on source areas. Local-scale models were constructed representing an alluvial aquifer bounded by a tributary intersecting a large river. Aquifer behavior was examined in response to variations in pumping well location and tributary gradient. Flow within …

Seismic Interpretation And Structural Evaluation Of The Hope Basin, Alaska, Virginia L. Elswick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Hope Basin is a Cenozoic basin located off the coast of Alaska, in the Bering Sea. Its initial formation was theorized to have occurred from right-lateral movement on the Kobuk fault, a strike-slip fault located in northwestern Alaska. However, from an interpretation of newly reprocessed seismic lines that are located in the southeastern portion of the basin, it is evident that distinct characteristics of strike-slip basins, as evaluated by past authors, are not present within the study area. Furthermore, a study of the tectonic history of the region lends itself to an alternate theory of orogenic collapse of the …

Highways Of The Mind: The Haunting Of The Superhighway From The World's Fair To The World Wide Web., Helen J. Burgess
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation investigates the way in which the rhetorical construction of the highway has been haunted, first by narratives of promise and progress and then of decay and death. Highways are figured as technological wonders marking the advent of a better future in the 1939 World's Fair and the advertising campaigns of the 1950s, and then as wired-up networks of death in science fictional accounts from the 60s to the 90s. At stake in this project is the very status of metaphor in the analysis of technology. The highway is a compelling 20th-century metaphor that reveals anxieties we have about …

Credit Programs, Poverty Alleviation And Women's Empowerment: A Case Study From Sri Lanka., Seela Aladuwaka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The provision of micro-credit for micro-enterprise development plays an important role in the alleviation and eradication of poverty. In particular, micro-credit programs have been shown to empower women by providing them access to material resources and increasing their participation in household decision-making. Some critics, however, claim that male family members control the loans women receive from credit programs and that women are merely a means for them to access money. Although it is widely believed that these programs are highly effective, there is a debate about the extent to which women are empowered and poverty within these families is reduced. …

The History Of Presque Isle And The City Of Erie, Pennsylvania: A Remote Sensing Case Study., Christopher Schaney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Geomorphology of the Presque Isle peninsula in Erie, Pennsylvania is inherently unstable. Since its initial development 3,500 years before present, long shore drift has caused the peninsula to migrate east across the Long Point-Erie moraine. Erosion on the western shoreline has breached the connection of the peninsula to the mainland 4 times in the past 200 years. The harbor, created by Presque Isle, has been paramount in the development and sustained existence of industry in Erie. The natural shallow entrance to the bay was bypassed in 1827 by the construction of a deep entrance to the harbor. Success of the …

Aquatic-Terrestrial Linkages In Appalachian Streams: Influence Of Riparian Inputs On Stream Habitat, Brook Trout Populations, And Trophic Dynamics., John A. Sweka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Riparian zones play a major role in the structure and function of headwater stream ecosystems. Inputs of leaf litter from riparian zones are the primary energy source for secondary production in these streams and inputs of large woody debris (LWD) help shape stream habitat. Riparian zones of Appalachian streams were degraded by past timber harvest activities. Streamside management zones (SMZs) now protect the riparian zone by limiting timber harvest activities near streams. The objective of this study was to examine aquatic-terrestrial linkages and how habitat and food resources influence brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis) populations in Appalachian streams. LWD was …
The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the interaction between the Innu of Labrador, an indigenous people in Canada, and the state since the middle twentieth century. The changing spatiality of this interaction can be understood through the analysis of the politics of scale. The scale of Innu social practices has historically been wide-ranging and fluid. Since the 1950s, the state has been increasingly involved in development projects on the lands the Innu have traditionally occupied. The state’s solution to the unwanted presence of the Innu was to settle, and therefore rescale, them in two settlements in the 1960s. The Innu’s struggle to regain …

Dark Wilderness A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Idea Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia E. Seiser
Dark Wilderness A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Idea Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia E. Seiser
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It has been almost forty years since the passage of the 1964 Wilderness Act and the establishment of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Forty years later, we still have not seen a wilderness that is not a surface environment. There exist neither subterranean nor marine wilderness areas. Efforts on behalf of cave wilderness have focused on the 1964 Wilderness Act legal definition of wilderness. Perhaps what is required is a different concept for the establishment of cave wilderness. This study explored the idea of cave wilderness from a human dimension perspective, via focus groups, using stakeholders from two cave regions …

The Future Of Electronic Editing: Theory And Practice., Hilary M. Attfield
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation investigates the theory and practice of editing as it moves into the electronic era. As an example of the type of material which scholars may now be interested in working with, it centers on an edition of a lecture given by the West Virginia artist-journalist David Hunter Strother on John Brown nine years after the insurrection at Harper's Ferry. This material was chosen because it was locally available, unpublished, both locally and nationally important, and of the dimension which would have formerly placed it on the margin of paper publication. Chapter one shows how the theory of editing …

Framing The View: The *Western Landscape And Nineteenth-Century Narratives Of Expansion., Thomas P. Kinnahan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study traces the flowering of Western scientific exploration during the fifteen years following the Civil War. During these years, the empirical modes of perception and representation associated with Western exploration gained growing cultural authority and increasingly came to frame discussions of Western policy. At the same time, the systematic exploration of the West revealed the region in new and sometimes startling ways, in some cases prompting far-reaching revisions in the nation's self-perception. The stakes of these revisions became especially acute in the 1870's as the nation's frontier line flowed toward the alien landscapes of the arid West, prompting both …

Kinematics Of Detachment Folding, Appalachian Valley And Ridge, West Virginia, Matthew N. Giffels
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study assesses the geometry and kinematics of a fold at the east edge of the Nittany Anticlinorium, Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province, West Virginia. Regional deformation consists of minor to major folds within two vertically stacked thrust sheets. Geometric analysis of a first-order fold in the upper, Silurian-Devonian sheet indicates it is a detachment fold with a detachment depth of up to four kilometers. The estimated detachment depth indicates involvement of the underlying, thrusted Cambrian-Ordovician sheet in the folding. Kinematic analysis of uplifted fold area relative to measured shortening amounts does not indicate a clear relationship. Finite strain measurements …
