Taxonomic Revision And Paleoecology Of Middle Devonian (Eifelian) Fishes Of The Onondaga, Columbus And Delaware Limestones Of The Eastern United States, Robert Lewis Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Eifelian stage of eastern North America has produced the remains of a substantial number of fish taxa, mostly from the Onondaga Limestone of New York and the Columbus and Delaware limestones of Ohio. Fish specimens in rock matrix from the Buffalo Science Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were compared to rock samples taken from quarries in Cheektowaga, New York and Warrensburg, Ohio, in order to determine the units from which the fish specimens originally came. This method allowed reasonable inference into the provenance of the museum specimens.;The stratigraphy indicates that the seas of New York and …

Growth Equilibrium Modeling Of Urban Sprawl On Agricultural Lands In West Virginia, Yohannes G. Hailu Dec 2002

Growth Equilibrium Modeling Of Urban Sprawl On Agricultural Lands In West Virginia, Yohannes G. Hailu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With dynamic economic and social changes, increasing pressure is exerted on natural resources management. Agricultural land resources particularly face growing pressure of conversion to non-agricultural uses from population and development demands for land. The continual conversion of agricultural land may have implications in terms of the loss of prime farmland, irreversible landscape changes, deteriorating environmental quality, and interference with rural lifestyles. This study models urban sprawl on agricultural land in a growth equilibrium modeling approach where the population-employment simultaneous equations system is estimated using two-stages-least-squares while changes in agricultural land is estimated using OLS on West Virginia data. Results of …

Sedimentary And Petrologic Analysis Of The Mississippian Price Formation At Sherwood Lake, West Virginia, Laura Ruth Sheehan Aug 2002

Sedimentary And Petrologic Analysis Of The Mississippian Price Formation At Sherwood Lake, West Virginia, Laura Ruth Sheehan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Depositional facies determinations of the upper member of the Price Formation were made based on detailed descriptions of the six outcrops exposed along Sherwood Lake Road, Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Units were placed into one of seven facies: fluvial, distributary channels, crevasse-splays, swamp, beach-bar, lagoon, and interdistributary bay. Sandstone units of the respective facies were then petrographically analyzed.;Petrographic analysis indicates that there are distinct differences in mineralogies among the facies, particularly in the type of lithic grains present within the sandstones. High percentages of schist and phyllite rock fragments within the upper-delta-plain facies indicate that the parent material for the …

(2) Establish factors that use the peak hour volume (PHV) to estimate the design hour …

Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox May 2002

Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current scholarship regarding Scandinavia has neglected to give all but a cursory glance at the factors involved in Viking expansion. This thesis studies and explains employment opportunities, political motives, and societal norms as separate, individual motives that perpetuated Scandinavian migration, conquest, and adventure from the eighth through the eleventh centuries AD. Afterwards, these investigations are used to describe the various and sometimes conflicting forces of expansion that led to the formation of the Danelaw in England circa AD 870. Over time, the eventual adoption of Christianity and feudal relationships within Scandinavia would bring expansion as well as the Viking Age …

Design And Implementation Of Web-Based Gis For Forest Fragmentation Analysis, Fei Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The advantages and limitations of current web GIS software for forest fragmentation information and analysis functionality were investigated using Landsat Thematic Mapper data of 1987 to 1999 for a test site in northern West Virginia. ESRI's ArcIMS technology was used to build a Web-based forest fragmentation analysis system to query, represent, and analyze the status of forest fragmentation using landscape metrics. Both ArcIMS HTML and Java fragmentation analysis tools were constructed. The web GIS was evaluated with respect to accessibility, navigation, interactive cartographic functionality, and spatial analysis functionality. The current ArcIMS approach was found to offer only limited support for …

Geology, Surface Hydrology, And Fish Habitat Relationships In The Upper Shavers Fork Drainage Basin, West Virginia, Ryan Cooley Gaujot May 2002

Geology, Surface Hydrology, And Fish Habitat Relationships In The Upper Shavers Fork Drainage Basin, West Virginia, Ryan Cooley Gaujot

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Shavers Fork is the mainstem stream of a unique upper elevation watershed located in the Appalachian Plateaus province of West Virginia. Surficial "facies" mapping of in-stream and floodplain-adjacent landforms helped to classify small-scale flow patterns into heterogeneous and homogeneous channel units. Channel-unit bankfull width, channel-unit length, channel-unit area, and channel-unit depth all increase in the downstream direction. Riffles constitute 32 percent of the total channel unit area, riffle-run complexes and glides make up 26 percent each, bluff-pool complexes constitute 7 percent, riffle-glide complexes 6 percent, and true pools make up only 2 percent. Upper reaches contain the most in-stream and …

Combined Effects Of Water Chemistry, Canopy Cover, And Stream Size On Benthic Macroinvertebrates Along A Central Appalachian Stream Continuum, Jesse Adam Bopp May 2002

Combined Effects Of Water Chemistry, Canopy Cover, And Stream Size On Benthic Macroinvertebrates Along A Central Appalachian Stream Continuum, Jesse Adam Bopp

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I sampled benthic macroinvertebrates along a 25.2 km stream continuum in the Central Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia from May---October 2000. Six components of macroinvertebrate community structure and function were measured: density, biomass, richness, community taxa similarity, feeding group composition, and metric composition. I quantified these components to determine if localized variation in alkalinity and canopy cover would modify stream continuum predictions. Localized variation in alkalinity and canopy cover significantly affected macroinvertebrate structure and function and modified stream continuum predictions. Results indicated that alkalinity was the primary determinant of macroinvertebrate structure and function, and that the effects of canopy cover …

Technologies Of A "New World" Citizenship: American Frontier Narratives In The Late-Twentieth Century., Catherine Courtney Gouge Jan 2002

Technologies Of A "New World" Citizenship: American Frontier Narratives In The Late-Twentieth Century., Catherine Courtney Gouge

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many contemporary American narratives about frontiers emphasize the displacement of the American Dream of infinite resources to a space that is always just beyond our reach and underscore the effect of the frontier as a means for Americans to organize a psychic identity, an identity that achieves stability and coherence through images of exploring and colonizing the frontier. Such texts invoke images of power and control to suggest that to be American we must find and pursue frontiers. Each of the late-twentieth century American narratives I look at in this project testifies to the enduring power of the concept of …

The Potential Of Soil Survey Data In A Quantitative Evaluation Of Surficial Geology Mapping In Northern Maine., Rosalia Evans Jan 2002

The Potential Of Soil Survey Data In A Quantitative Evaluation Of Surficial Geology Mapping In Northern Maine., Rosalia Evans

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The soil-surficial geology relationships along the St. John River in northern Maine suggest that surficial geology is the most important factor controlling soil-profile genesis. Therefore, the information available on soil survey maps is predictive of the surficial geology of those areas. The agreement between a derivative surficial geology map created from soil survey data and maps created by conventional geological mapping differs little from the agreement between conventional geological maps. Soil survey maps can be used to make general assumptions about surficial geology patterns in northern New England and adjacent Canadian Provinces. Sitespecific applications using soil survey maps to determine …

Wheat, Wealth, And Western Maryland: The Growth And Evolution Of Flour Milling In Frederick County, Maryland, 1748-1789., John F. Kvach Jan 2002

Wheat, Wealth, And Western Maryland: The Growth And Evolution Of Flour Milling In Frederick County, Maryland, 1748-1789., John F. Kvach

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores the evolution of flourmills in Frederick County, Maryland within the context of the economic and social development of western Maryland from 1748-1789. Western Maryland’s development differed greatly from that of most other areas in Maryland. A large German immigrant population, along with English and Scottish settlers, settled the valleys, of present day Frederick County, during the eighteenth century. These settlers grew wheat and created a need for mills and millers. Economically, mills created prosperity by attracting new businesses and settlers to the frontier. Politically and socially, millers influenced a region often in conflict with the tobacco interests …

A Stratigraphic And Sedimentary Analysis Of The Purslane Formation Of Western Maryland., Jeffrey Ian O'Connell Jan 2002

A Stratigraphic And Sedimentary Analysis Of The Purslane Formation Of Western Maryland., Jeffrey Ian O'Connell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the past, outcrops of the Purslane Formation have been misidentified and neglected receiving little attention as a major Lower Mississippian unit. While exposures of this formation are rare, those that occur in western Maryland are worthy of extensive analysis. In particular are the exposures in the Oakland sand and gravel quarry, those along Deep Creek Lake in McHenry, and those above the third bench on the north cut face of the I-68 road cut through Sideling Hill. Through detailed stratigraphic and sedimentary analysis it is possible to correlate these deposits with each other as well as accurately reconstruct sedimentary …

Two survey instruments were mailed to the total population of 332 faculty. A return rate of 61% was attained. Role variables were measured with the Role Perception Questionnaire (Rizzo, House, & Lirtzman, 1970). A Faculty Demographic Questionnaire was used …

Daniel Defoe And The Reform Of The English Nation: An Examination Of His Moralistic Writings., Tiphanie N. Stocks Jan 2002

Daniel Defoe And The Reform Of The English Nation: An Examination Of His Moralistic Writings., Tiphanie N. Stocks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) advocated social and moral reform in early eighteenth century England through his novels, pamphlets, essays, and other moralistic writings. This work traces Defoe’s reform efforts by analyzing his religious education and those political actions that helped him to develop his beliefs. While Defoe’s writings reflect religious and moral concerns that were typical of the era and addressed by other polemicists, he differed from contemporary reformers in that he used fiction as well as essays and pamphlets to disseminate his beliefs. While other writers quickly followed suit, up until 1720, only Paul Bunyan in The Pilgrim’s Progress, published …

This was a mixed-method two-stage study conducted electronically with both qualitative and quantitative instruments. The first stage used the Delphi method of research to …

Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention: Development Of A Quantitative Method To Assess Community Vulnerability And Air Emission Hazard For Optimal Impact., John Lewis Boettner Iii Jan 2002

Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention: Development Of A Quantitative Method To Assess Community Vulnerability And Air Emission Hazard For Optimal Impact., John Lewis Boettner Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study develops a quantitative and objective method of analyzing community vulnerability combined with potential exposure to emission hazards. This extends earlier work concerning Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention (EJP2) initiatives for optimal selection of facilities for resource allocation for pollution prevention initiatives. A 1992 EPA report indicated that minority and low-income communities are exposed to higher levels of pollution in their neighborhoods than that of the general population. Environmental Justice is a grassroots derived term for addressing these disproportionate shares of negative environmental impacts, which are placed upon people of minority or low socio-economic status. The method developed identifies …

The Influence Of Lineaments And Hydrogeologic Setting On Water Well Yield In Lebanon And Southern Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania., Jeremy Scott Robinson Jan 2002

The Influence Of Lineaments And Hydrogeologic Setting On Water Well Yield In Lebanon And Southern Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania., Jeremy Scott Robinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A study of 1100 water wells in Lebanon and southern Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania was conducted to determine the relationships of several hydrogeologic variables, especially lineaments, to water well yield. This project will likely improve the use of ground water exploration techniques in the area. The primary well groups studied were 493 business/large-diameter public supply wells, and 522 domestic-agriculture supply wells. Clastic terrane wells produce higher yields than carbonate and igneous terrane wells. Wells located near any fault type produce greater yields than wells further away. Lineaments relate better to well yield for business/public supply wells than for domestic-agriculture wells. Clastic …

A History Of Jewish Life In The Central Appalachian Coalfields, 1870s To 1970s., Deborah R. Weiner Jan 2002

A History Of Jewish Life In The Central Appalachian Coalfields, 1870s To 1970s., Deborah R. Weiner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores the intersection of two historical phenomena. From the 1880s to the 1920s, Central Appalachia experienced rapid industrial development as the entry of railroads into the mountains initiated large-scale coal extraction. At the same time, East European Jewish immigrants streamed into America's eastern seaboard. Some found their way to the coalfields, where they carved out a role as retailers in an expanding rural-industrial economy. This niche enabled them to build several small but vital Jewish communities which lasted late into the twentieth century. Their economic position facilitated the entry of Jews into the coalfield middle class and made …

Building The Beaver And Lake Erie Canal: The Politics Of Public Improvements In Pennsylvania, 1783-1845., William David Mccarthy Jan 2002

Building The Beaver And Lake Erie Canal: The Politics Of Public Improvements In Pennsylvania, 1783-1845., William David Mccarthy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Patterns of commerce and settlement in colonial America were shaped by watercourses and portages. Road building skills were primitive and boating represented the most effective means of moving bulk freight and passengers. Traders and frontiersmen leading the advance of European settlement into the Appalachian Mountains therefore adopted the shortest crossings between watersheds. Natural conditions in Pennsylvania did not promote an orderly advance westward and produced isolated clusters of settlement around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with small and widespread settlements in Northwest Pennsylvania. State leaders were hard pressed to define the limits of Pennsylvania until the end of the eighteenth century, and …

Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke Dec 2001

Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The European settlers who emigrated to America in the seventeenth century were decidedly patriarchal. Nevertheless, significant cultural differences in expressions of patriarchy among them existed. Specifically, the Dutch of New Netherland defined the gendered roles of women differently than did other European cultures. More than deputy-husbands, but less than full partner, seventeenth-century Dutch women in New Netherland were integral to the survival and promotion of their families' interests and preservation of the colony. English expropriation of New Netherland in 1664 and permanent acquisition in 1674 inaugurate a process of patriarchal acculturation that over time submerged the roles of Dutch women. …

The study builds on the OOGIS concepts of inheritance, …

Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope May 2001

Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Taking as its point of departure Henri Lefebvre's contention that "(Social) space is a (social) product," my dissertation explores the contemporary American novels of Pynchon, Acker, Reed, Auster, DeLillo, and McElroy as well as the two recent films Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor and their dramatization of the production of twentieth-century social space. I approach these works as metaphysical detective stories which evoke the classic detective figure only to frustrate his impulse to solve and contain. Following Foucault's contention that "space is fundamental to any exercise of power," I suggest that the detective figure is significant to an understanding …
