Insights And Implications Of Ai For Science Strategies Of Major Science And Technology Powers, Zhang Zhiqiang, Yawei Shao

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transitioning from a research aid to a scientific discovery agent. The new paradigm of “AI + Science” (AI for Science, AI4S) – the intelligent science paradigm (or the fifth paradigm of science) – characterized by the deep integration of artificial intelligence into the entire process of scientific discovery, is rapidly emerging and becoming a “new agent” for intelligent and autonomous execution of scientific discovery and technological invention as well as a key force in reshaping the human knowledge production system and the global landscape of technological competition. The intervention of AI in the field of knowledge …

Planetary Health: Scientific Frontier For Harmonious Coexistence Between Humans And Nature, Zhu Yongguan, Jue Liu, Hua Zheng, Yaoyang Xu, Weiqi Zhou, Hongliang Zhang

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Against the backdrop of deeply intertwined global environmental change, biodiversity loss, and health risks, Planetary Health is emerging as a new interdisciplinary field that is gradually becoming the scientific frontier for understanding harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. This study systematically reviews the evolution of Planetary Health from the “Planetary Boundaries” theory to a comprehensive disciplinary framework. Through a paradigmatic comparison with concepts such as public health, global health, and One Health, it reveals that the core breakthrough of Planetary Health lies in redefining human health as an endogenous variable embedded within the stability of Earth’s natural systems. Three major …

Black Soil Organic Carbon Plays A Critical Role In Ensuring Food Security, Zhang Xingyi, Qingsong Shen, Mingming Guo, Na Li, Qiang Chen, Wei Hu, Jianye Li, Yimin Chen, Yansheng Li, Xiaobin Liu Jul 2026

Black Soil Organic Carbon Plays A Critical Role In Ensuring Food Security, Zhang Xingyi, Qingsong Shen, Mingming Guo, Na Li, Qiang Chen, Wei Hu, Jianye Li, Yimin Chen, Yansheng Li, Xiaobin Liu

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Carbon-rich Black Soils are an important natural resource ensuring China’s food security, and their soil carbon stocks are closely related to grain production capacity. Based on nearly two decades of regional survey data and long-term field experiments, this study systematically investigated the dynamics of soil organic matter (SOM), its response relationship with crop productivity, and strategies for soil fertility improvement. The results showed that soil carbon stocks in the topsoil (0–20 cm) of the Black Soil region in Northeast China have declined by approximately 60%. In 2019, the regional average SOM content was approximately 36 g/kg and was decreasing at …

A Geopoetic Approach To Travel Narrative, Rachel Bouvet, Myriam Bergeron Jul 2026

A Geopoetic Approach To Travel Narrative, Rachel Bouvet, Myriam Bergeron

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

This article presents the foundations of the movement initiated by the International Institute of Geopoetics. The transdisciplinary dimension of this field of research and creation, founded by Kenneth White in 1989, as well as the predominance of certain principles such as nomadism, the outside world and radical criticism, bring together several concerns specific to the travel narrative, located at the intersection of literature and geography. The geopoetic approach opens up reflection both on the poetic pole, i.e. the intrinsic relationship between the journey experienced and the writing of the journey, and on the reading pole, which implies taking into consideration …

Reflections On Travel, Antonio García Velasco Jul 2026

Reflections On Travel, Antonio García Velasco

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

This trip is an invitation to change your life and enrich your customs, to deepen your knowledge and to broaden your own worldview. There are several forms of travel. Travel for pleasure and tourism is not the same as that imposed by personal or socio-political conditions. A distinction must be made between the transfer and the journeyitself. Don Quixote told Sancho that “he who reads a lot and walks a lot sees a lot and knows a lot”. To go, to walk is to travel. And reading, this is the other way of travelling. Currently, a trip without a camera …

The Journey Of Doctor Fernand Linares To Morocco A Medical Officer At The Service Of The French Colonial Project During The Reign Of Sultan Moulay El Hassan, Farida Samadi Jul 2026

The Journey Of Doctor Fernand Linares To Morocco A Medical Officer At The Service Of The French Colonial Project During The Reign Of Sultan Moulay El Hassan, Farida Samadi

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

Dr Fernand Linares unanimously represents a leading figure who has played a crucial role in the French colonial enterprise in Morocco, both in terms of his medical action and his diplomatic role, which he has never ceased to fulfil with skill, tact and great discretion. Taking advantage of his proximity to the Cherifian Court, he has earned the esteem of the sovereign Moulay El Hassan, thanks to his good collaboration in the affairs of the Makhzen, his Moroccan clothing and his mastery of the Arabic language. In doing so, he has provided France with invaluable services in favor of a …

Gender Aspects Of Rihla, El Gharoussi El Mobarik Jul 2026

Gender Aspects Of Rihla, El Gharoussi El Mobarik

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

Controversially contested, rihla is a genre by itself for the very reasons it is contested for. Anchored in its Arab-Muslim culture, the hijra of the prophet, the cult of pilgrims, and scientific peregrinations, flourished in the Muslim West: it is primarily a Magribine genre. No genre enjoys absolute purity, so does the rihla. It has links with geographical literature, fahrâsa and autobiography. The writing of the narrative in linear form and circular content systematically challenges didactics, pleasant and ethical digressions, but also books: the genre is intertextual.

The Moorish Ambassador’S Journey To Spain: Cultural Encounters In Ahmed Ben Mehdi Al-Ghazāl’S Natījat Al Ijtihād Fi Al-Mohādana Wa Al-Jihād (1766), Lhoussain Simour Jul 2026

The Moorish Ambassador’S Journey To Spain: Cultural Encounters In Ahmed Ben Mehdi Al-Ghazāl’S Natījat Al Ijtihād Fi Al-Mohādana Wa Al-Jihād (1766), Lhoussain Simour

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

This article attempts to read al-Ghazāl’s travel account Natījat al Ijtihād fi al-Mohādana wa al-Jihād as a valuable archival material and an eighteenth-century subaltern narrative that offers the re-interrogation of the discourse of the Self and the Other from the perspective of the Moroccan traveler. Natījat al Ijtihād is a travel account that gives further historical evidence about one of the less discussed experiences in literature and annals of history, the abduction of Muslims in foreign lands. Such an interdependent overlap between these thematic concerns and the historical context that fuels up al-Ghazzal’s travel-inspired text would give readers the chance …

The Female Voice, The Male Gaze: Ai Colonial Paradox And African Feminist Futures, Aishat Olayetunde Isiaq Mrs Jul 2026

The Female Voice, The Male Gaze: Ai Colonial Paradox And African Feminist Futures, Aishat Olayetunde Isiaq Mrs

ELO (un)supervised 2026

At ELO 2026, I propose to examine the feminization of artificial intelligence as a deliberate design choice rooted in a long history of technology and service labour. From the “Hello Girls” of early telephone switchboards to the default female voices of Siri, Alexa, and contemporary chatbots, technology has repeatedly been paired with performed femininity, framing assistance as innate, emotional, and subservient. This paper will critically analyze the paradoxical gendering of artificial intelligence, in which AI assistants are feminized to evoke care and service, while the algorithmic structures behind these systems remain embedded in patriarchal and colonial logics. Drawing on African …

Spatial Identity In Transition: Revitalizing Surakarta’S Heritage Markets Through Community-Based Placemaking, Eko Nursanty, Sri Mulyani, I Wayan Andhika Widiantara, Arturo Galay Cauba Jul 2026

Spatial Identity In Transition: Revitalizing Surakarta’S Heritage Markets Through Community-Based Placemaking, Eko Nursanty, Sri Mulyani, I Wayan Andhika Widiantara, Arturo Galay Cauba

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Traditional markets are essential socio-cultural infrastructures in heritage cities, shaping everyday interactions, economic life, and collective memory. In Surakarta, four historic markets—Pasar Gede, Pasar Klewer, Pasar Legi, and Pasar Triwindu—sustain the city’s urban identity. However, rapid modernization, commercial restructuring, and shifting consumer behavior have disrupted their spatial and symbolic continuity, raising concerns about the erosion of cultural meaning. Previous studies examined traditional markets mainly from economic or architectural perspectives, rarely exploring how their multidimensional identity evolves under urban transformation. This study investigates how spatial, social, symbolic, and environmental dimensions collectively shape market-based authenticity and the urban identity of Surakarta. A …

“Huir Sí Es Mejor Plan”: Rethinking The Subject In Digital Literature, Fernanda Mugica Jul 2026

“Huir Sí Es Mejor Plan”: Rethinking The Subject In Digital Literature, Fernanda Mugica

ELO (un)supervised 2026

As an extension of my research on contemporary appropriative practices that experiment with deviant uses of technology, this paper explores the question of subjectivity in digital literature. My aim is to examine how a set of contemporary works of electronic literature problematize the relationships between writing, technology, and subject formation. Within this framework, I propose a reading of Huir sí es mejor plan (2020), a work created in Twine by Argentine writer Valeria Mussio. To address the question of the subject in an algorithmic culture, it is essential to attend to the spatial modulations (Angeliki 2021) that traverse it: media …

Coastal Vulnerability Index Mapping Using Remote Sensing And Gis Techniques: A Comparative Study Of Oaxaca (Mexico) And Bali (Indonesia), Siti Aisyah, Mangapul Parlindungan Tambunan

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of two journal articles that assess coastal vulnerability using the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI), focusing on the State of Oaxaca in Mexico and the Province of Bali in Indonesia. The comparison covers the research context, data inputs, methodological frameworks, findings, and conclusions, while also highlighting the respective strengths and limitations of each study. Both regions applied CVI methodologies to evaluate areas at risk from sea-level rise, utilizing remote sensing data and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools at a regional scale. The outcomes of this research emphasize key parameters that significantly affect coastal …

The Implications Of Generative-Ai User Prompt Engineering Shaping The Absent Presence Of Latino Women Textual Rhetoric In Llms, Angely C. Suarez Dejesus Jul 2026

The Implications Of Generative-Ai User Prompt Engineering Shaping The Absent Presence Of Latino Women Textual Rhetoric In Llms, Angely C. Suarez Dejesus

ELO (un)supervised 2026

This article examines how large language models (LLMs) generate text that affects underrepresented groups, particularly Latino women, due to limited cultural, contextual, and abstraction training rooted in biases. The research draws on Brock’s (2018) CTDA theory, White et al.’s (2023) prompt engineering framework, Klein’s (2015) computational spatiality, and Anzaldua’s (1987) concepts of cultural, emotional, and gendered borderlands to analyze the outputs. Using narrative prompt experiments, Chat GPT 3.5, 5, Claude AI, Gemini, and Microsoft Co-Pilot produced changes in their textual outputs as evidence of further algorithmic designs. Nevertheless, continual biases embedded in the algorithms’ linguistic representation and misrepresentation through the …

Nonmarine Ostracods Of Northern Cyprus: Diversity, Ecology, And Global Island Comparisons, Ahmet Özdi̇lek, Okan Külköylüoğlu Jul 2026

Nonmarine Ostracods Of Northern Cyprus: Diversity, Ecology, And Global Island Comparisons, Ahmet Özdi̇lek, Okan Külköylüoğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

There is a notable paucity of detailed information regarding the distribution and ecological characteristics of nonmarine Ostracoda in Northern Cyprus. Furthermore, a comprehensive assessment of their distribution across islands in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres is incomplete. To advance our understanding of ostracod diversity, distribution, and ecological preferences, a total of 79 aquatic sites in Northern Cyprus were randomly sampled between 18 May and 12 August 2022. A total of 64 ostracod taxa were identified, comprising 28 living species and 36 subfossils, with 18 species representing new records for the island. Additionally, five ostracod species were reported for the first …

Local Labor Market Tightness And Job Quality: Evidence From Job Changers, Brad J. Hershbein, Katherine Lim, Douglas Webber, Mike Zabek Jul 2026

Local Labor Market Tightness And Job Quality: Evidence From Job Changers, Brad J. Hershbein, Katherine Lim, Douglas Webber, Mike Zabek

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Using novel data from the Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking, we examine how labor market tightness affects workers’ job quality. We estimate that a 10 percent increase in job vacancies not only increases the probability of changing jobs, it yields an 11–18 percent increase in the (unconditional) probability of switching to a better job overall, and one with greater pay and benefits, interest in the work, and advancement opportunities. Because tight labor markets improve both worker pay and job amenities in roughly the same proportion, their benefits to workers are underestimated when based on pay alone.

Bridge Scour Analysis For Rocks: Classification, Method Selection, And Practical Case Studies, Darud E. Sheefa, Stanley Vitton, Zhen (Leo) Liu, Brian Barkdoll

Michigan Tech Publications

Despite the availability of several scour calculation methods, bridge scour analysis for scour susceptible rocks is much less understood than its counterpart for sands, because scour calculation equations were traditionally obtained using flume tests with sands. As a result, there are three major knowledge gaps in the bridge scour analysis for susceptible rocks: (1) a rock classification system is needed for scour considerations to serve as a pre-screening process before conventional scour analysis involving sampling, erodibility testing, and scour calculation, (2) there has been a lack of information to guide the scour analysis for rocks including detailed procedures, needed and …

Author: William H. Chickering

Reviewed by: Dr. William Thomas Allison, professor of history, Georgia Southern University

William H. Chickering brings to light the untold story of FULRO, a coalition of Vietnam’s indigenous minorities who fought for autonomy amid the chaos of Cold War conflict. Through meticulous research and compelling narrative, the book reveals how these fighters navigated betrayal, shifting alliances, and global indifference. It’s a powerful account of resistance and identity in one of the most complex theaters of the Vietnam War.

From Insight To Impact: Segmenting Consumers By Their Regenerative Agriculture Priorities, Lourival Carmo Monaco Neto, Gustavo Stevanin De Souza, Owen Jerome Zakrzewski, Allan Wayne Gray

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Regenerative agriculture is gaining traction in agrifood value chains, yet its definitional ambiguity and the heterogeneity of consumer priorities create strategic challenges for commercialization. Firms commonly assume a homogeneous ‘sustainable consumer’ motivated by environmental outcomes, but research on consumer food values suggests that economic attributes often outweigh environmental concerns when trade-offs are required. This study segments U.S. consumers based on how they prioritize seven core attributes of regenerative agriculture: soil health, biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, food prices, crop yield, and farmer profitability. Using forced-ranking data from 1231 nationally representative U.S. consumers surveyed in August 2024, we apply a …

Becoming Beyond Ready: Determining Staffing Levels For The 4-H Program To Achieve Opportunity For All Youth, Jeremy Elliott-Engel Jul 2026

Becoming Beyond Ready: Determining Staffing Levels For The 4-H Program To Achieve Opportunity For All Youth, Jeremy Elliott-Engel

Journal of Extension

4-H seeks to expand opportunity and access for all youth, yet little guidance exists regarding the staffing levels required to achieve that goal. In this commentary, I examine staffing ratios as a measure of organizational capacity and propose discussion of a framework based on the ratio of 4-H professionals to potential youth participants rather than current enrollment. I argue that staffing decisions should move beyond historical staffing patterns and budget constraints and should account for population size, density, and community characteristics. This framework is intended to stimulate discussion about strategic staffing approaches that support sustainability and/or growth of the 4-H …
