Euryhaline fauna characteristic of the Fivemile Member include the brachiopod Lingula, the bivalves Modiolus and Septimyalina, and ostracods. The geographic distribution and richness of these dominant …

Integrating Participatory Gis And Political Ecology To Study Flood Vulnerability In The Limpopo Province Of South Africa, Nthaduleni S. Nethengwe Aug 2007

Integrating Participatory Gis And Political Ecology To Study Flood Vulnerability In The Limpopo Province Of South Africa, Nthaduleni S. Nethengwe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation research examines differential flood vulnerability in the Thulamela municipality of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The study employs a triangulation of methods within a Participatory GIS methodology. Political ecology is the conceptual framework. The main premise of this research is that household flood vulnerability is socially constructed in that it is mediated by locally contingent political, socio-economic and environmental factors. As a result, conventional solutions that focus mainly on the physical event are ineffective and costly because they ignore local knowledge about flood hazards and flood coping mechanisms that have been disrupted or destroyed. The study integrates …

Pennsylvania's Murrysville sandstone has been a proven gas producer since 1859 and a gas storage field since 1951. Using 49 side-wall cores from a gas well drilled in Westmoreland County, depositional environment and diagenesis are examined. In thin section, 5 microfacies are recognized. The lower two-thirds of the Murrysville is equivalent to the Cussewago of northwestern Pennsylvania and is interpreted as fluvial deltaic. The upper third is equivalent to the Berea of Ohio and is interpreted as being a marine transitional stream deposit.;Compaction was not extensive due to low amounts of ductile grains, rigid grain stability and matrix occupying space …

Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback May 2007

Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The thesis of this dissertation is that Indian-related violence and warfare had a profound influence on the duration and nature of the frontier experience of those men and women who settled in the western Virginia backcountry between 1749 and 1794. Recurrent attacks by Shawnees, Delawares, Mingos, and Indians from the Great Lakes region caused such widespread death, destruction, and depopulation that it effectively prolonged the period of austere and difficult living conditions for over forty years. This conclusion contradicts the assertions of some recent scholars who have argued that crude living conditions lasted for only a year or two on …

Perceptions Of The Environment For Physical Activity: Perspectives From Community Residents And Policy Officials., John R. Geer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adult residents (n = 184) of two counties in West Virginia completed a survey assessing perceptions of their physical and social environments, and self-reported physical activity (PA). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine of these participants who met CDC PA recommendations, and with 10 individuals involved in public policy regarding perceptions of their communities for PA and issues related to PA barriers. Active residents were more likely to use community facilities than inactive residents (p < .001). In addition, active residents reported significantly higher self-efficacy for meeting PA recommendations than inactive residents (p < .001). Overall, participants with high self-efficacy were eight times more likely to meet recommended levels of PA. Residents’ environmental barriers to PA included lack of accessibility to facilities, lack of community walkability, and safety and traffic issues. Personal barriers to PA were also commonly cited by residents, including being too busy/having competing demands and poor attitude/motivation. Residents cited the use of exercise partners or groups as being important for increasing physical activity. Policy officials cited similar environmental and personal barriers, but often placed responsibility for overcoming those barriers on the residents within their communities.

Essay 2: Does Institutional Quality Matter For Investment And Capital Mobility? Evidence From Sub -Saharan Africa. Essay 3: Do Donors Care About Declining Trade Revenue From Liberalization? An Analysis Of Aid Allocation. (With Subhayu Bandyopadhyay)., Javed Younas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Essay 1: Motivation for bilateral aid allocation: Altruism or trade benefits. This paper argues that bilateral aid from developed OECD countries is disproportionately allocated to recipient nations who have a greater tendency to import goods in which donor nations have a comparative advantage in production. The estimates indicate that a substantially larger amount of aid per capita is provided to recipients who import capital goods, while imports by other category groups have no significant effects. Given that developed donor nations are major producers and exporters of capital goods, this result at least partially supports their trade benefits motive. On the …

Predictive Vegetation Models: A Comparison Of Model Combination Approaches., Benjamin F. Gilmer Iv Jan 2007

Predictive Vegetation Models: A Comparison Of Model Combination Approaches., Benjamin F. Gilmer Iv

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The distribution of plants and animals in space and time has long been a focus of many biogeographical and ecological studies. The various approaches for modeling species distributions are rooted in the quantification of the species-environment relationship, where bioclimatic variables are used to explain the distribution of species and communities. Predictive modeling of species distribution has become a widespread tool in the areas of conservation biology, climate change research, land-use/land-cover change assessment, and biodiversity estimates. Although many statistical methods are now available, previous model comparison studies have found little difference in prediction accuracy when models were compared using the same …

Sacred space is a critical cultural construction of all religions. It is within this space that people are able to commune with deities and step out of the common, profane world. Japanese Shinto sacred space has undergone many changes throughout its history. One of the largest alterations was the introduction of the Shrine Merger Policy in 1906. Across the nation, thousands of shrines were demolished and merged under governmental authorization. The goal of this study is to map the shrine change from before the policy to after to determine areas of change. An emphasis on centrality from the capital in …

Shoreline Erosion In Deep Creek Lake, Maryland: Patterns, Trends And Economic Implications., Catalin Demian Jan 2007

Shoreline Erosion In Deep Creek Lake, Maryland: Patterns, Trends And Economic Implications., Catalin Demian

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Deep Creek Lake, Maryland was constructed in the 1930s as a reservoir for a hydro-electric project, but it also has been used for recreational purposes. Property ownership is attractive, but lakefront properties in particular are exposed to shoreline erosion. A particular issue is the State of Maryland’s ownership of the shoreline and the buffer strip. While most of shoreline erosion occurs technically on state-owned land, not the lakeshore private property, erosion’s most visible effects are property improvements damage or gradual decrease in the distance between the lake and the property improvement. In order to understand the magnitude of the problem, …

Literary Representations: Reading And Writing Femininity In Eighteenth Century Novels., Jessika L. Thomas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fictional depictions of feminine reading and writing practices reveal transformations in expectations of women's roles due to changes in economic, political, social, and familial structures during the eighteenth century. Luce Irigaray's concern with the relationship between cultural influences and individual development offers a new perspective for considering female authors' representations of literary women and femininity. This dissertation utilizes Irigaray's cultural and psychoanalytic critiques of masculine discourse to develop a methodology for analyzing women's reactions, as they are revealed through fictional characters, against prohibitions that limited their engagement in literary activities. Female protagonists challenge social boundaries through their reading and writing …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The mining hydrogeology of the Upper Freeport underground coal mining district, northern WV and western MD, was compiled onto a number of 1:24,000 scale quadrangles. Available underground mine maps were georeferenced and outlines of mine workings digitized using GIS techniques. Geologic information (coal outcrop location and structure contour elevations) was compiled using geostatistical methods. The mine maps were used in conjunction with projected mine discharges to delineate pool locations and flooding patterns. The relatively small number of flooded mines was mapped under the assumption that discharge location and elevation controlled the extent of the flooded mine area. These mapping and …

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole Jan 2007

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

he most recent trend in historic preservation has led many in the field to pay attention to cultural landscapes as historic resources. Considering buildings, structures, or objects within a given spatial and physical setting, or landscape, endows them with historic significance and context that would be absent if viewed individually. While this is somewhat of an expansive approach to the built environment, this trend in historic landscape interpretation still does not account for all types of resources that one finds in the field. A fragmentary landscape is a cultural landscape defined by three characteristics: 1) the presence of buildings, structures, …

Glimpses Of Wilsonianism: United States Involvement In Nicaragua During The Coolidge Era., Steven R. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The military occupation of Nicaragua was one of the Calvin Coolidge administration’s most unpopular foreign policies. Upon the death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923, Coolidge inherited the White House and a Nicaraguan withdrawal plan set up years earlier. As planned, the United States monitored the Nicaraguan national elections in 1924, and withdrew its occupation force in 1925. When the country collapsed into civil war a few months later, the Coolidge administration ordered the Marines back into Nicaragua to restore order. Coolidge and his Secretary of State, Frank B. Kellogg, argued the occupation was necessary to protect American economic …

Determination Of Diel Chemical Cycle Presence Within Abandoned Coal Mine Drainage Streams In Harrison County, West Virginia., Michael Jay Smilley Jan 2007

Determination Of Diel Chemical Cycle Presence Within Abandoned Coal Mine Drainage Streams In Harrison County, West Virginia., Michael Jay Smilley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diel (24-hour) cycling of dissolved ions has been linked to various mechanisms such as fluctuations in temperature and photosynthetically-mediated pH. Yttrium and the rare earth elements (YREE) appear to fluctuate in response to temperature. After selecting a field site based on pH and temperature screening, five sampling events were undertaken: each involved hourly or bihourly sampling with concurrent stage, pH and temperature logging. For all events, YREE increased during the nighttime and decreased during the daytime. Dissolved Fe and Mn exhibited similar trends at one of the two sampled locations. Speciation models suggest that sulfate and carbonate-bound YREE species dominate …
