Carboniferous Paleobotany And Paleoclimatology Of The Central Appalachian Basin, West Virginia, U.S.A., Bascombe Mitchel Blake

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Carboniferous plant fossils have been reported from the Appalachian Basin since the middle part of the nineteenth century. The lack of easy access to European literature and comparative specimens resulted in a body of work characterized by overly diagrammatic figures and confusing lists of junior synonyms with limited figures. This report provides 41 photographic plates of Carboniferous plant fossils from the Appalachian Basin. Comparative range charts are used to summarize the similarity of the fossil macrofloras of the Appalachian region with those of other parts of Euramerica, although each paleoregion has a small number of endemic species. First occurrences and …

Gis Analyses Of Paleo-Fire Regimes In Ponderosa Pine (Pinus Ponderosa) Forests: Extending Spatial Approaches In Ecological Interpretation., James T. Kernan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fire is an inherently spatial process that is tightly coupled to spatial patterns in climate and topography. This is particularly true in the dry western United States, where confounded by the legacy of fire suppression and the trend in global warming, large high severity fires are increasingly frequent. Recent work has integrated space and time analyses of fire regimes through the application of geographic information science (GIS). GIS was developed for spatial studies, and it can be effective in multi-dimensional interpretations of fire ecology in many vegetated ecosystems. In order to examine the role of fire in dry ponderosa pine …

State Policy And Food Insecurity In Kenya's Arid And Semi-Arid Land (Asal) Regions, Naomi Shanguhyia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) have continued to experience chronic and persistent food crises despite the efforts made by governmental and non-governmental organizations to address the problem. Inappropriate policies and poor approaches have partly been blamed for this persistence. This study therefore seeks to examine how food insecurity is conceptualized within policy documents, the perceived causes and solutions, and potential drawbacks of such perceptions. The study adopts a political ecology framework within which Ellis' (2000) rural livelihood approach and Sen's (1981) entitlement thesis are used to analyze selected government policy documents and related reports. A brief historical overview of …

Evaluation Of The Impacts Of Highway Construction On Sediment And Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Appalachian Streams, Lara B. Hedrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Corridor H is a four-lane highway under construction in north eastern West Virginia. I used a variety of methods to assess the impacts of highway construction in the Lost River watershed, Hardy County, West Virginia. I designed a two part sediment sampler to be used to monitor sediment in paired sites upstream and downstream of highway construction. The two-part design, a base that remains embedded in the substrate, and a removeable trap, allowed for long-term placement of samplers without continual disturbance of the streambed. I used a laboratory flume to compare my sediment sampler design with other devices used to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current stream restoration practices focus on stabilizing banks, transporting sediment, and creating aquatic habitats. However, only channel morphology data are collected prior to typical restoration project designs. A more thorough approach to assessing restoration projects incorporates the geomorphology of the contributing hillslopes within the watershed. For this project, a landslide risk assessment was conducted for Horseshoe Run watershed in West Virginia using LiDAR data, GIS, and multivariate statistical analysis to provide the restoration projects with information concerning the geomorphology of the hillslopes and identify areas of greater risk for slope failure. A landslide inventory map was created using field observations …

Seasonal Changes In Diel Cycling Of Dissolved Iron Species In A Coal Mine Drainage Impacted Creek, Daniel B. Harris Jan 2008

Seasonal Changes In Diel Cycling Of Dissolved Iron Species In A Coal Mine Drainage Impacted Creek, Daniel B. Harris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diel fluctuations of pH, specific conductance and Fe species have been documented in Dillan Creek, a small coal mine-impacted tributary to Deckers Creek, WV. Samples were collected hourly over 16-20 hour periods and analyzed for dissolved Fe(II) and dissolved total Fe using a Hach DR2800 spectrophotometer. Fe(II) concentrations increased during the day and decreased at night during late winter sampling. Sampling conducted in the summer shows an opposite trend with Fe(II) increasing at night and decreasing during the day. Discrepancies between timing of cycles indicate a seasonal variation of controlling mechanisms. In winter, iron cycles are likely controlled by photoreduction …

Development And Analysis Of Lithologically Controlled Regional Curves Of Hydraulic Geometry For Appalachian Mountain Streams, Ridge And Valley Physiographic Province, Pennsylvania, Matthew S. Finkenbinder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Regional curves of hydraulic geometry are frequently constructed for physiographic provinces, regions that have similar geologic structure, climate, and geomorphic history. As a result, the factors controlling channel form are more alike than would be the case for streams across widespread geographic regions. However, geology can vary significantly within a physiographic province. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine if regional curves would be more precise predictors of hydraulic geometry if developed for geologically similar streams within a physiographic province. A total of 34 reaches on six ungauged mountain streams in the Ridge and Valley Physiographic Province of …

Recharge Processes Within The Cacapon Mountain Aquifer, Ridge And Valley Province, West Virginia, Cristine M. Vinciguerra

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the 2006-2007 water year, apparent recharge rates for three streams draining the Cacapon Mountain Aquifer, in the Valley and Ridge Province of northern West Virginia, were estimated using hydrograph separation techniques. The techniques use stream baseflow, dominated by groundwater discharge, as a surrogate for groundwater recharge. Two of the streams draining the aquifer were strike-normal (Rock Gap Run and Breakneck Run) and one was strike-parallel (Sir Johns Run). The strike-normal streams had significantly lower apparent recharge rates (Rock Gap Run: 2.52 in/yr; Breakneck Run: 6.57 in/yr) than the strike-parallel stream (Sir Johns Run: 13.31 in/yr). The large variations in …

Application Of Lidar-Derived Dems And Their By-Products For Geomorphic Assessment From Stream-Reach To Watershed Scales: Horseshoe Run, Wv., Justin Beau Downing Jan 2008

Application Of Lidar-Derived Dems And Their By-Products For Geomorphic Assessment From Stream-Reach To Watershed Scales: Horseshoe Run, Wv., Justin Beau Downing

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The application of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for geomorphic assessment at a range of scales has increased over the past two decades. Before the advent of LiDAR, DEMs were generated using topographic maps or aerial photographs. The resulting grid-based DEMs generally had coarse resolutions ranging from 10 m to 30 m. Research has shown these resolutions to be acceptable when investigating large areas, but fail to provide adequate resolution for finer scale geomorphic assessment. LiDAR technology allows the creation of much finer resolution DEMs, ranging from 0.5 m to 6 m, depending on the sensor used. The Canaan Valley Institute …
