Developing And Evaluating A Gis-Supported Immersive Visualizaton System For Soil Resource Mapping., Paddington Hodza
Developing And Evaluating A Gis-Supported Immersive Visualizaton System For Soil Resource Mapping., Paddington Hodza
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the coupling of GIS and immersive visualization (IV). This study was premised on the hypothesis that linking IV and GIS could potentially enhance a user’s visual-cognitive capacity to perceive, analyze, and understand complex geospatial data. A loosely-coupled GIS-IV system was developed and subsequently tested by professional soil scientists in soil boundary mapping and soil map update case studies. Soil boundary mapping is essentially a visualization enterprise involving the creation of cognitive models representing the relationship between soil and observable environmental features. A GIS-IV conceptual model was formulated, and an operational system was designed and implemented. The GIS-IV …
The Dynamic Integration Of Distributed Gis Through Semantic Web Services., Xuan Shi
The Dynamic Integration Of Distributed Gis Through Semantic Web Services., Xuan Shi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While interest in the GIS community has traditionally “been almost entirely on the sharing of data†(Goodchild, 2003), Web Service, a solution of software interoperability, is regarded as the “future of geoprocessing†(Hecht, 2002). While data interoperability and data semantics has long been examined in the community of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), exploring the way for the effective sharing of GIS methods and tools is a completely new effort, although such a theme was only talked. Enabling the dynamic integration of geospatial data and geoprocessing functions and resources over heterogeneous systems and platforms through the cutting-edge technology of semantic Web …

The State, Ecology, And Society In Western Kenya: Politics Of Soil Conservation And Land Management In Vihiga 1930-1950., Martin Shidende Shanguhyia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study focuses on the conflict that emerged in the 1930s and 1940s between the British colonial government officials and the African farmers in Vihiga, Western Kenya, over approaches to land management. The colonial state was more than convinced that unprecedented soil erosion in most of the African reserves across the Colony was to blame for much of the social and economic problems that those areas were experiencing. Vihiga, the leading producer of maize in the Colony, was not spared such concerns, hence increased state intervention in this area’s agricultural production and land management processes. Vihiga offered a special place …

Stratigraphic And Structural Analysis Of The J1 Sandstone, Scotts Bluff Trend, Scotts Bluff And Morrill Counties, Nebraska, Jeremy M. Wolpert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Scotts Bluff Trend is a group of 10 oil fields that produce from the Cretaceous J Sandstone. Production was previously thought to be aligned along this trend due to structural influence.;For this study well logs were utilized in analyzing structural and stratigraphic elements, as well as hydrocarbon predictability. The Scotts Bluff Trend appears to sit upon a residual structural high. A comprehensive look reveals that stratigraphic influence is superimposed on the structural high.;J1 Sandstone reservoirs were mapped assuming a NW--SE depositional trend. Deposition was in a shallow-marine bar environment. Central-bar, bar-margin and interbar facies are recognized which interfinger laterally into …
Perspectives Of 12th Grade Students, Their Families, And School Officials Related To Affordability And Accessibility Of The West Virginia Promise Scholarship Program At Logan High School, Craig S. Mcclellan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With only 14% of West Virginia's population over 25 years old possessing a bachelor's degree, the lack of a skilled workforce often thwarted state legislators' attempts to attract new industry to the state's struggling economy. To address workforce qualification concerns, state educational stakeholders implemented a merit-based scholarship program with average requirements in 2002. The West Virginia PROMISE (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence) Scholarship Program goals include encouraging high school students to work harder, and to entice more graduates to attempt post-secondary work at in-state institutions.;This qualitative study was designed to discover the perceptions of five high school …
Left Arm Of The Republic: The Department Of The Pacific During The Civil War, James Robbins Jewell
Left Arm Of The Republic: The Department Of The Pacific During The Civil War, James Robbins Jewell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although the Civil War was fought largely in the East it was a transcontinental war. Securing the Far West for the Union played an important, though secondary role in the northern war effort. When most of the Regular Army units were called east, holding the region and confronting the multiple threats to its security fell to the western volunteers. Through their efforts, they maintained a general stability in a vast region where both potential and actualized threats could easily have hampered Union efforts in the main theatres of war. Therefore, by quelling secessionist schemes and activities and attempting to maintain …

Interpreting Site Formation Processes Affecting Re-Emergent Cultural Sites Within Reservoirs: A Case Study Of St. Thomas, Nevada, Denyse Wyskup
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The inundation of cultural resources due to the construction of dams as water retention mechanism is a global problem, affecting thousands of historic and prehistoric sites. Recent warming trends, in combination with increasing water usage from growing populations and urban expansion has initiated dramatic pool-level shallowing in many reservoirs, especially in the American Southwest, resulting in the re-emergence of inundated cultural sites. The "ghost town" of St. Thomas, Nevada, represents one example of a site that was impacted in this manner. This historic settlement is one of many hundreds of sites that became submerged when Boulder Dam was constructed to …

An Interpolation Method For Stream Habitat Assessments With Reference To The Crystal Darter, Kenneth Richard Sheehan
An Interpolation Method For Stream Habitat Assessments With Reference To The Crystal Darter, Kenneth Richard Sheehan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Crystallaria asprella spp. (Elk River crystal darter) is documented only in Elk River, West Virginia. Little life history detail is known about this lotic, benthic-dependent species. Previous studies have led to a very basic understanding of the use of depth, flow and substrate of the crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella), and less is known about the Elk River crystal darter. Due to substrate-specificity in crystal darters (which reportedly bury in sand), a study concerning benthic stream habitat modeling was undertaken. Substrate and depth modeling using >5% of an area sampled at a resolution of 0.093 m2 square spatial data in a …
Faith, Power, And Conflict: Miner Preachers And The United Mine Workers Of America In The Harlan County Mine Wars, 1931--1939, Carletta A. Bush
Faith, Power, And Conflict: Miner Preachers And The United Mine Workers Of America In The Harlan County Mine Wars, 1931--1939, Carletta A. Bush
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early accounts of the Harlan County mine wars place the inability of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) to establish a permanent foothold in the county, first at the feet of the Harlan County Coal Operators Association (HCCOA) and secondly at the worn work boots of miners who, when work was plentiful, saw little or no need for a union. The power of the HCCOA is not in question. Its members used their immense wealth and influence to build a million dollar war chest to fight the union and to maintain their iron-clad grip upon the county's political, judicial, …

Application Of A Statistical Zonation Technique To Granny Creek Field In West Virginia, Venkata Kristamsetty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The significance of dividing the sedimentary intervals into flow units reflects groups of rocks that has similar geologic, physical properties and depositional environment that affect fluid flow. Variations in rock properties result from depositional, diagenetic and post-depositional changes. A flow unit is a volume of a reservoir rock that is continuous laterally and vertically and has similar averages of those rock properties that affect fluid flow.;In this study, a statistical zonation technique developed by Testerman to identify and describe naturally occurring zones in a reservoir is applied to Granny Creek field in West Virginia. This technique is particularly useful in …

Geographic Interpretation: The Role Of Spatial Knowledge In The Interpretation Of Natural Resources, Heidi Leigh Bailey
Geographic Interpretation: The Role Of Spatial Knowledge In The Interpretation Of Natural Resources, Heidi Leigh Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A surge of interest in geographic information has stemmed from the recent proliferation of Geographic Information Systems, Global Positioning Systems, and web-based tools such as Google Earth. This growing interest in geographic information has many implications for natural resource interpretation. Visitor centers and interpretive centers have long been sources of geographic information---providing maps and exhibits depicting a site or region. Such displays come in all shapes and sizes and in a variety of media, including maps, models, projections, animations and dioramas. Yet missing from the field of interpretation is research on the effectiveness of these tools in conveying geographic information …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As more communities across the country are developing rail-trails and greenways, relationships among community-based nonprofit organizations and local government entities evolve during trail development. Twenty-three participants from the nonprofit and local government sectors in three West Virginia municipalities were interviewed about their relationships and experience in rail-trail and greenway development. This qualitative analysis employs a grounded theory framework and reveals several practical and theoretical findings. Perceived benefits and costs of trail development reported by participants provided a context for how participants relayed experiences indicative of their political and built environments. Factors that constrain or facilitate relationship building between nonprofit organizations …
Subsurface Mapping Of Ellesmerian Onlaps: Testing The Opening Of The Arctic Canada Basin, Brian Connelly
Subsurface Mapping Of Ellesmerian Onlaps: Testing The Opening Of The Arctic Canada Basin, Brian Connelly
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the advent of plate tectonics in the mid-1960's the mechanism for formation of the majority of the world's ocean basins has been solved. However, there are still several remaining tectonic conundrums, such as the origin of the Arctic Canada Basin. The most widely accepted tectonic hypothesis proposes a rotational opening of the basin after rifting along the Northern Alaskan-Canadian Arctic margins.;Subsurface mapping the Ellesmerian strata of Northern Alaska onlapping onto the Barrow Arch, a long-lived basement high, was carried out and then compared with mapped strata on Prince Patrick Island, Canada, to see if they aligned. These mapped onlaps …

The Development Of A Typology For Interracial Relationships, Juan M. D'Brot
The Development Of A Typology For Interracial Relationships, Juan M. D'Brot
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether Foeman and Nance's (1999) model of interracial relationship development could be adapted into a generalizable interracial relationship typology and whether there would be distinct differences in the affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions of each stage. Long-table analysis of four focus group interviews confirmed differences among the four stages of Foeman and Nance's model. Further examination of focus group transcripts revealed differences between the affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimension of each stage, but few differences between the affective and cognitive dimensions across stages. Implications for the study of relationship development, limitations, and …
Late Cenozoic Stratigraphy And Landscape Dynamics In The Unglaciated Central Appalachians: A Case Study From The Northern Blue Ridge, South-Central Pennsylvania, United States., Todd Grote
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Surficial deposits and soils along the northwestern footslopes of the Northern Blue Ridge in south-central Pennsylvania illustrate the geomorphic evolution of unglaciated landscapes that experienced late Cenozoic climate fluctuations. Geologic, geomorphic, and pedogenic investigations were used to document soil-landform-parent material relationships and create surficial geology maps. Deep exposures within three sand and gravel pits suggest fluvial processes, primarily tractive fluvial transport and valley aggradation, were the dominant mechanisms for alluvial fan development. Fan architecture suggests multiple depositional events, intermixed with episodes of landscape stability and weathering, were responsible for complex facies assemblages. Field and laboratory data revealed three lithostratigraphic units …
Identifying Spatial Clusters Within United States Organic Agriculture., Daniel C. Eades
Identifying Spatial Clusters Within United States Organic Agriculture., Daniel C. Eades
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although the organic market has experienced rapid growth in recent decades, growth in production has not been distributed evenly across the country, instead concentrating in certain regions. Employing measures of spatial concentration and association, we identify those counties in which organic production is clustered or represents a proportion of the agricultural economy greater than would be expected by national trends. Results show that spatial clustering of organic agriculture does exist. Large location quotients for organic production were most often found for the western U.S., the Great Plains states, and New England. Clusters measured by the local Moran’s I statistic followed …

Revisiting Capital Punishment: Factors That Matter When Receiving The Death Penalty (A State By State Analysis), Bridget Ann Micka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although the death penalty is popular by most accounts, is it really a good social policy? The purpose of this study is to add to this discussion by examining the factors that directly impact death penalty cases. The data used in this study come from the state level database which contains information on all decisions of initial capital direct, state and federal habeas corpus cases between 1973 and 1995. What are the factors that lead some state compared to others to use the death penalty more often? Some have suggested that this could be the result of a minority-majority conflict. …

Shoeprint Analysis: A Gis Application In Forensic Evidence, Michael Anthony Walnoha Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The overall intent of this study is to illustrate how GIS and crime mapping methods can be applied to forensic evidence to better understand and comprehend spatial patterns that exist in these data. This study bridges common crime mapping principles such as hot spot mapping, exploratory data analysis, and spatial statistics to spatial forensic evidence investigation. In particular, forensic shoeprint evidence is examined and spatial relationships are analyzed using both exploratory and confirmatory statistical analysis. It is found that crime mapping principles can be indirectly related to shoeprint evidence mapping. Exploratory spatial data analysis is extremely helpful in breaking up …
Student Beliefs And Self-Reported Juvenile Deliquency: A Test Of General Strain Theory, Jacqueline Nicole Canady
Student Beliefs And Self-Reported Juvenile Deliquency: A Test Of General Strain Theory, Jacqueline Nicole Canady
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study is to test Robert Agnew's General Strain Theory. The researcher applied the theory to secondary data of high school sophomores utilizing Educational Longitudinal Survey of 2002. The study sought to understand whether Agnew's strain theory is applicable to high school environments. The findings indicate some support for Agnew's Revised Strain Theory. Conversely, sex is substantially insignificant concerning self-reported juvenile delinquency within schools. Furthermore, without accounting for students' upbringing and socioeconomic background Agnew's General Strain Theory cannot explain differences in race and delinquency. In conclusion, the study suggests further research of Agnew's theory, concerning both race …
"The Relapse Of Reconstruction:" Railroad -Building, Party Warfare And White Supremacy In Blue Ridge North Carolina, 1854-1888., Paul D. Yandle
"The Relapse Of Reconstruction:" Railroad -Building, Party Warfare And White Supremacy In Blue Ridge North Carolina, 1854-1888., Paul D. Yandle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the early twentieth century, the men who had led North Carolina's mountain counties through Civil War and Reconstruction were praised by those who followed them for two "accomplishments:" bringing much-needed railroad service to the mountains and preserving white rule in North Carolina. The completion of the Western North Carolina Railroad to the Tennessee line in 1882 was, indeed, noteworthy for the perseverance it showed over physical and political obstacles. The preservation of white rule was equally if not more noteworthy for the suffering it brought to African Americans statewide. However, both railroad service and white supremacy were seen at …
