The Opequon Creek watershed is located in northern VA and the eastern panhandle of WV. Currently, the main creeks in the watershed do not meet VA or WV state water quality standards for recreational uses and aquatic life. In both states, the creeks are listed as impaired due to high levels of nutrients, bacteria, benthic and biologic impairment. The Opequon Creek is part of the upper Potomac River watershed, and ultimately impacts water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The main aim of this study was to develop a methodology that can be used to reduce nutrient loadings entering the …

Route And Grade Sensitive Modeling Of Fuel Efficiency And Emissions For Diesel Buses, Abm Siddiqur Rahman Khan Jan 2009

Route And Grade Sensitive Modeling Of Fuel Efficiency And Emissions For Diesel Buses, Abm Siddiqur Rahman Khan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study first analyzed the characteristics of twenty-three chassis duty cycles to determine the most important parameters that affected FC and emissions. The analysis showed that cycle properties such as standard deviation of average speed, percentage of idle, characteristic acceleration, kinetic intensity, and stops per unit distance were closely related with cycle average speed. A cycle with low average speed contained stop-and-go behavior, with multiple accelerations and decelerations, whereas a high vehicle speed cycle was steadier. In this way, average speed was found to be inter-related to other cycle properties.;The experimental data were collected on a subset of twenty-three test …

The Case Of Uneven Development In Palestine: An Investigation Of Scalar Fix As An Act Of Dispossession, Sandra Lange Jan 2009

The Case Of Uneven Development In Palestine: An Investigation Of Scalar Fix As An Act Of Dispossession, Sandra Lange

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Israel's assault on Gaza in December 2008 brought one of the world's most long-standing and hotly debated issues to the fore: the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Despite numerous diplomatic efforts to negotiate peace, the hostilities between the two parties continue. One of the fundamental obstacles to peace has been the highly uneven development between Israel and Palestine, caused primarily by Israel's continuous dispossession of Palestinian rights to land, water and sovereignty. In order to further our understanding of this phenomenon, this thesis sets out to examine processes of dispossession are carried out. The study therefore draws on the geographical …

The approach was illustrated on an example described by Nelson et al. [2]. The example had 16 components resulting in ten cut-sets and fifty five tie-sets. Upon simplification, the problem …

Performance Evaluations Of Latex-Modified And Silica Fume Modified Concrete Overlays For Bridge Decks, Sathish Kumar Raju Konduru Jan 2009

Performance Evaluations Of Latex-Modified And Silica Fume Modified Concrete Overlays For Bridge Decks, Sathish Kumar Raju Konduru

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most of the concrete bridge decks in the cold regions undergo severe reinforcement corrosion due to the transport of chloride ions within the concrete by application of deicing salts on bridge decks in the winter. As a result, protective concrete overlays of about 2-inch thickness are applied on bridge decks. Concrete overlays provide: (1) protection against heavy traffic and the further infiltration of the chloride ions; (2) skid resistance surface; and (3) uniform appearance to extend the service life of bridge decks. Despite these advantages, concrete overlays undergo premature delaminations, edge curling, and corner lifting due to expansion/shrinkage of concrete, …

Essays On The Impact Of Market Information On Stock Markets: R&D, Patents And Money Illusion, Kwasi Osei-Yeboah Jan 2009

Essays On The Impact Of Market Information On Stock Markets: R&D, Patents And Money Illusion, Kwasi Osei-Yeboah

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation identifies patents and R&D expenditures as firm-level information variables, and investigates how they affect the pricing of assets in the stock market. In the first essay, the question as to whether patents and R&D represent adverse selection risk is investigated. Firms investing in patents and R&D may present an uncertain outcome for investors who do not have the privilege of insider information. This may increase the adverse selection cost for uninformed investors. For the uninformed investor to hold stocks with more private information, he must be compensated for taking on more firm characteristic risk. The empirical results show …

Choice Between Schedules Of Reinforcement With And Without Response-Pacing Requirements, Leigh Schrimpf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate (DRL) and differential-reinforcement-of-high-rate (DRH) schedules specify a certain pace of responding eligible for reinforcement. The present study assessed the value of a paced schedule of reinforcement using a concurrent-chains schedule. Pigeon's pecks on the left and right initial-link keys led to one of two terminal-link VI 60-s schedules, programmed on the center key. Completion of a terminal-link schedule always led to access to grain. The value of a terminal-link schedule was measured by the initial-link choice proportions. In the baseline, pecks on either initial-link key produced access to one of two unpaced terminal-link schedules every 60 s, on average. …

The Effect Of Attentional Bias On Suggestibility, Elizabeth E. Stacom Jan 2009

The Effect Of Attentional Bias On Suggestibility, Elizabeth E. Stacom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research implies that individuals with high anxiety levels may be more accurate in response to misleading questions when compared to individuals with low anxiety levels (Ridley & Clifford, 2004; Ridley, Clifford, & Keogh, 2002). This effect may be because individuals with high anxiety levels demonstrate an attentional memory bias toward threatening stimuli. The present study investigated whether a high versus low attentional bias affects suggestibility. Seventy participants completed a visual probe task to measure attentional bias. Next, participants were presented with 11 threatening pictures. Each picture was followed by a distractor task. Participants were then asked two misleading and two …
