Research questions include: (1) What are selected middle school public school teachers' perceptions of character education in terms of how do teachers define character education? How important is character education? (2) How do selected middle school teachers implement character education? (3) What fosters and inhibits the implementation …
Effect Of Strain On Aluminum Nitride/Gallium Nitride Distributed Bragg Reflectors, Christopher Michael Miller
Effect Of Strain On Aluminum Nitride/Gallium Nitride Distributed Bragg Reflectors, Christopher Michael Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
III - N Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBRs) are important components to nitride based optoelectronic devices. Nitride based DBRs are critical to the operation and performance of both Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Aluminum Nitride (AlN)/Gallium Nitride DBRs are of particular interest because their high refractive index contrast allows the fabrication of DBRs with high reflectivity using a relatively low number of periods.;The growth of high quality AlN/GaN DBRs has been held back because of tensile strain resulting from the 2.4% lattice mismatch between AlN and GaN. This tensile strain has led to cracking in …
Identifying Prognostic Gene-Signatures Using A Network-Based Approach, Swetha Bose Nutakki
Identifying Prognostic Gene-Signatures Using A Network-Based Approach, Swetha Bose Nutakki
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The main objective of this study is to develop a novel network-based methodology to identify prognostic signatures of genes that can predict recurrence in cancer. Feature selection algorithms were used widely for the identification of gene signatures in genome-wide association studies. But most of them do not discover the causal relationships between the features and need to compromise between accuracy and complexity. The network-based techniques take the molecular interactions between pairs of genes in to account and are thus a more efficient means of finding gene signatures, and they are also better in terms of its classification accuracy without compromising …
Dispositional Mindfulness And Cardiovascular Reactivity To Sensory Rejection And Sensory Intake Tasks, Paula R. Prentice
Dispositional Mindfulness And Cardiovascular Reactivity To Sensory Rejection And Sensory Intake Tasks, Paula R. Prentice
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mindfulness is a trained or dispositional state of "being" that has been linked to positive mental and physical health effects. Although preliminary findings on cortical activation have shown mindfulness to be associated with increased frontal activation and reduced limbic activity, very little is known regarding the influence of mindfulness on autonomic nervous system activity. The present study sought to determine how participants varying in self-reported levels of dispositional mindfulness reacted to tasks differing on attention to environmental stimuli. Cardiovascular reactivity [heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure] to a sensory intake task (computerized reaction time …

Development Of An Optimized Short-Span Steel Bridge Design Package, Gabor I. Nagy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia Department of Transportation indicates that a significant number of bridges in West Virginia are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. One third of the nation's bridges have similar conditions due to the age of the infrastructure and ever increasing traffic demands. The resources available to replace or rehabilitate those structures are finite, hence cost effective means of replacing the inadequate structures is necessary. One of the solutions intended to ease the increasing demands of replacing those structures are standardized bridge plans by providing a cost effective method to save time and resources. Therefore, the focus of this effort is …

Development And Verification Of A Laboratory For The Emissions Testing Of Locomotive Engines, Michael R. Shahan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia University (WVU) currently has a Transportable Emissions Laboratory capable of measuring the exhaust constituents produced by a heavy duty diesel engine. The laboratory has the capability of measuring the exhaust constituents from a partial exhaust stream of a locomotive diesel engine. As the field of locomotive engine emissions testing broadens, it has become desirable for WVU to develop a laboratory that is capable of sampling the gaseous exhaust constituents produced by a locomotive engine from a raw, undiluted gas stream, in tandem with a partial flow dilution tunnel system for particulate matter. This document provides the design philosophy …

Observations Of The Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance As Compared To A Gravimetric Method For Particulate Matter Measurement, Gregory Shane Thomas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A direct comparison has been made between a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) and the traditional gravimetric filter method designed per 40 CFR §1065.145. A repeatability test, consisting of multiple emission tests, was also performed for the TEOM system that shows that the TEOM was a consistent instrument. The TEOM was also tested with and without a diesel particular filter (DPF) during an 8-mode test on a 1997/1998 Kubota 2.2L engine to see if the concentration of the particular matter (PM) flowing through the TEOM has an effect on accuracy. The flow rate was varied to find the optimal setting …
Thermal Analysis Of Tilted Roofs Composed Of Two Separated Surfaces, Orlando J. Ugarte-Almeyda
Thermal Analysis Of Tilted Roofs Composed Of Two Separated Surfaces, Orlando J. Ugarte-Almeyda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Due to the rising power costs and lack of nonrenewable energy sources, the cooling of houses is becoming more expensive. Looking for alternative methods applicable to this process is becoming not only an option, but also a necessity. Changes in the roof structure of buildings can be applied in order to achieve a more favorable thermal transmission behavior. The utilization of a tilted roof, composed of two separated surfaces, generates natural convection currents in the channel between them. These currents, after driving off part of the transferred heat, decrease the temperature of the lower surfaces and consequently, the heat flux …

Development And Evaluation Of A Minimally Invasive Sampling Technique To Estimate The Age Of Living Birds, Crissa K. Cooey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using pest species in initial studies of pentosidine (Ps) aging research for birds may be the catalyst to discovering more effective population control strategies for pest, invasive, and hard to manage birds. Pentosidine is an irreversible, stable, fluorescent, collagen cross-link, created through the Maillard reaction, which has been found to accumulate throughout the lifetime of an organism in various body parts such as skin, lens crystalline, and dura matter. Pentosidine assays are more accurate at determining the age of adult birds in comparison to plumage coloration, eye and mouth color, feather wear, and molt sequences due to the discovery that …
Optimization Of Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation Using Genetic Algorithms, Raghu Chaitanya Doppalapudi
Optimization Of Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation Using Genetic Algorithms, Raghu Chaitanya Doppalapudi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Modern wireless communication systems must be optimized with respect to both bandwidth efficiency and energy efficiency. A common approach to achieve these goals is to use multi-level modulation such as quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) for bandwidth efficiency and an error-control code for energy efficiency. In benign additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, Ungerboeck proposed trellis-coded modulation (TCM), which combines modulation and coding into a joint operation. However, in fading channels, it is important to maximize diversity. As shown by Zehavi, diversity is maximized by performing coding and modulation separately and interleaving bits that are passed from the encoder to the modulator. …

Complex Stimulus Control In Humans: Merging Functional And Equivalence Classes, Harold E. Lobo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation investigated the merging of functional and equivalence classes produced by training responding to either simple or conditional discriminations. Experiment 1 targeted the acquisition of three three-member equivalence classes featuring class-specific reinforcers and three three-member functional classes each controlling the occurrence of a nonsense vocal response. Four female college students completed testing for the targeted stimulus classes. Two subjects demonstrated class-consistent emergent responding, but only one of them maintained class-consistent responding across repeated testing. This student withdrew from the experiment before class merging was arranged. Experiment 2 simplified and expedited the procedures for producing independent emergent classes. Four female …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Reliability For Structure-Based Software Via Simulation, Jun Xu
Sensitivity Analysis Of Reliability For Structure-Based Software Via Simulation, Jun Xu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Computer simulation is an appealing approach for the reliability analysis of structure-based software systems as it can accommodate complexities present in realistic systems. When the system is complex, a screening experiment to quickly identify important factors (components) can significantly improve efficiency of the analysis. The challenge is to guarantee the correctness of the screening results with stochastic simulation responses. Control Sequential Bifurcation (CSB) is a new method for factors screening using simulation experiments, when only main effects models are considered. By grouping factors, CSB can identify the importance of factors while reducing the simulation effort. With appropriate hypothesis testing procedures …
Cfrp Repair Of Concrete Beams Aged By Accelerated Corrosion, George C. Parish
Cfrp Repair Of Concrete Beams Aged By Accelerated Corrosion, George C. Parish
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 2006, the Federal Highway Administration statistics showed that approximately one out of every 13 reinforced concrete bridges in the USA is structurally deficient. As infrastructure continues to age and deteriorate, there will not be sufficient funds to replace every deficient bridge. Therefore, effective and durable repair methods must be developed and implemented. In this research, an experimental study is presented to determine both the short- and long-term efficiencies of concrete retrofit with externally-bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabrics. The primary objective is to determine effective concrete-repair and CFRP-retrofit approaches for rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete bridge girders, based on …
Hemodynamics Of Intracranial Aneurysms: Factors That May Influence Occurrence, Francisco Adolfo Pino Romainville
Hemodynamics Of Intracranial Aneurysms: Factors That May Influence Occurrence, Francisco Adolfo Pino Romainville
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The formation and growth of intracranial aneurysms are partly attributed to various hemodynamic factors, such as the wall shear stress and pressure. However, the exact nature of the hemodynamic variables responsible for triggering aneurismal growth is still unknown. The conclusions drawn by various studies in this regard are found to be speculative and sometimes ambiguous. This issue is further investigated in the present work using some new insight gained from passive scalar dispersion in the blood flow for realistic aneurysm geometries. Intracranial aneurysms are best visualized using selective catheter angiogram technique where a contrast agent added to the blood flow …

Effect Of Dietary Lysine And Genetics On Indices Of Energy And Protein Metabolism In Rainbow Trout And Alterations In The Mitochondrial Proteome In Broilers Fed A Lysine-Deficient Diet, Stephanie K. Pomeroy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
How an organism reacts to consuming a lysine deficient diet was examined in two different circumstances. First, the responses of ten different genetic lines of rainbow trout were observed while consuming a lysine-deficient (LD) diet, used to mimic a soybean meal-containing diet. The aquaculture industry is investigating the incorporation of soybean meal into carnivorous fish diets to alleviate the need for fishmeal. If soybean meal is incorporated into the diet, an assessment of the genetic strains of fish used in the aquaculture industry today must be performed since differences in genetics have been shown to effect growth. When compared to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Trauma exposure is prevalent among adolescents and may have a negative impact on social, educational, and occupational functioning. Research indicates that individual-level variables, such as impulsivity, may be risk factors for exposure to traumatic events but the findings have been mixed. This study examined the relation between impulsivity and accidental trauma exposure using a multi-method, multi-informant procedure with a community sample of 48 adolescents. Mean age was 15.2 (SD = 1.38) and the sample was predominantly female (62.5%) and predominantly Caucasian (87.5%). No significant difference was noted between genders in terms of number of traumatic events reported. As a whole, …
Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo
Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of any reproductive management system in cattle is to ensure that cows breed at the earliest opportune time and maintain their pregnancy to term. However, delayed resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclic activity in primiparous beef cows and pregnancy losses in dairy cows continue to impede progress in obtaining sound reproductive efficiency in these species. Three studies were designed to test the following hypotheses: (1) Does removal of lactational stress in beef cows by early weaning of calves improve cow energy profile and postpartum reproductive performance? (2) Does artificial insemination (AI) with adjunctive seminal plasma (SP) or transforming growth …

Results suggest that HR facilitates faster acquisition of skills as well as better performance on cumulative reviews, distraction, and retention tests. …
Video Modeling Via Implicit Motion Representations, Yunfei Zheng
Video Modeling Via Implicit Motion Representations, Yunfei Zheng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Video modeling refers to the development of analytical representations for explaining the intensity distribution in video signals. Based on the analytical representation, we can develop algorithms for accomplishing particular video-related tasks. Therefore video modeling provides us a foundation to bridge video data and related-tasks. Although there are many video models proposed in the past decades, the rise of new applications calls for more efficient and accurate video modeling approaches.;Most existing video modeling approaches are based on explicit motion representations, where motion information is explicitly expressed by correspondence-based representations (i.e., motion velocity or displacement). Although it is conceptually simple, the limitations …
