Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Gpr Imaging Of Wood And Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites., Sandeep Pyakurel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Subsurface defects in wooden logs such as knots, decays, splits, embedded metallic nails and bullets are of major concern to timber saw mills. Presence of these defects decreases the value of the sawn lumber boards. Also, the factory down time and operation cost increases significantly whenever the saw blade is damaged by encountering embedded metals during the sawing process. This study has been conducted to assess the possibility of detecting subsurface defects in logs using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) before the sawing process. GPR radargrams obtained from several wooden logs using different scanning techniques and analysis methods were investigated. These …

Heavenly Genes: Eugenics And The New Woman In Fin De Siecle England., Jane V. Rago

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1886 the Contagious Diseases Acts were repealed after a long sixteen year fight, led by social reformers and what would later come to be known as the first wave of feminism. Western feminism was born and bred in large part out of the debates sparked by the Contagious Diseases Acts, debates that opened up into the appeal for women to be granted full citizenship through the right to vote, to own property after marriage, and the right to education and employment outside the home. The crux of this argument was grounded in a critique of mid-Victorian ideology of separate …

Polarity Inverted Gallium Nitride For Photonic Crystal Biosensors., Randy P. Tompkins Jan 2009

Polarity Inverted Gallium Nitride For Photonic Crystal Biosensors., Randy P. Tompkins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Photonic crystals are periodic nanostructures used to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Depending on geometry and refractive index contrast between adjacent regions, periodic variation of the refractive index can result in a photonic band gap or non-allowed set of frequencies that cannot propagate through the crystal. Defects can be introduced at photonic crystal lattice sites, resulting in localized modes that lie within the photonic gap. Such defect cavities can be tuned to resonant frequencies of a defect mode and whole planes or lines of defects can be fabricated in photonic crystals resulting in optical confinement of defect modes. These …

The measured flow characteristics are intended to improve previous measurements taken in the quiescent zone of a rectangular aquaculture raceway system. The second objective is …

Cellular Mechanisms Responsible For Development Of Sensitivity Of The Bovine Corpus Luteum To Prostaglandin F2 Alpha, Madhusudan P. Goravanahally Jan 2009

Cellular Mechanisms Responsible For Development Of Sensitivity Of The Bovine Corpus Luteum To Prostaglandin F2 Alpha, Madhusudan P. Goravanahally

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2alpha) brings about regression of the bovine corpus luteum (CL). This luteolytic property of PGF 2alpha is used in beef and dairy cattle to synchronize estrus. A limitation of this protocol is an insensitivity of the early CL to luteolytic actions of PGF2alpha. The mechanisms underlying this differential luteal sensitivity are poorly understood. Therefore the main objective of the current study is to understand the cellular mechanism of luteal insensitivity. The developing CL has a maximum number of PGF2alpha receptors; therefore differences in signaling events might be responsible for luteal insensitivity. Hence differential gene expression at two …

Derrida's Daughter: A Dialogue Postmortem On Love., Heather D. Zias Jan 2009

Derrida's Daughter: A Dialogue Postmortem On Love., Heather D. Zias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the illegitimate daughter of one of the twentieth century’s most intriguing philosophers, at least to literary folk affiliated with universities of some repute, the author’s life has been suspended in the interstices of celebrity and ignominy, erudition and erethism, Stanford University Press and Sinclair Community College, and so much so, that her life seemed to be nothing but this conjunction, that is—and. Unwilling to cite her famous father (who, though absent, was nevertheless present to her mind as a wish or a hope) so that she might make her own name, the author moved about incognito in literary circles …

A Strength And Serviceability Assessment Of High Performance Steel Bridge 10462, Aaron G. Bertoldi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

High performance steels (HPS) were developed through the cooperative efforts of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the US Navy, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). They offer several advantages over conventional bridge steels including greater yield strengths, improved ductility, increased toughness, and better welding characteristics. The three grades of HPS that are currently available in today's bridge market are HPS 50W, 70W, and 100W. The current steel I-girder flexural capacity equations, however, were specifically developed for girders with nominal yield strengths less than or equal to 70 ksi. Because of this fact, the flexural capacities of I-girders incorporating …

The Riotous Presence In American Literature And Culture, Rebecca Skidmore Biggio Jan 2009

The Riotous Presence In American Literature And Culture, Rebecca Skidmore Biggio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This project seeks a comprehensive understanding of riot as an operating principle in American history and culture---a principle variously revealed in, explored, or obscured by literature produced by popular and political novelists at the turn of the twentieth century. In defining riot as a presence, I identify as central to US history a haunting incoherence between fundamental cherished ideals of representative government and the use of violence or threats of violence to assert the privilege of one group through the subjugation of another.;Because representations influence the way we characterize historical events both prospectively and retrospectively, I conduct my investigation through …

Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis In Aspergillus Fumigatus : Association With Sporulation And Clustered Genes Common Among Ergot Fungi, Christine M. Coyle Jan 2009

Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis In Aspergillus Fumigatus : Association With Sporulation And Clustered Genes Common Among Ergot Fungi, Christine M. Coyle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ergot alkaloids, indole-derived mycotoxins, interact with multiple monoamine neurotransmitter receptors and cause disease in exposed individuals. They have been well studied in the ergot fungus, Claviceps purpurea, and have been reported in some closely related grass endophytes, as well as the distantly related opportunistic human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. A. fumigatus, which sporulates prolifically, produces clavines, specifically festuclavine and fumigaclavines A, B, and C in association with asexual spores and the total mass of alkaloids constitutes over 1% of the spore mass. These alkaloids differ from those of most clavicipitaceous fungi, which consist of different clavines and often more complex lysergic …

Effective Maxillary Protraction: Hyrax Expansion Appliance Vs. Double-Hinged Expansion Appliance, Thuy B. Do-Delatour

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Patients with a skeletal Class III malocclusion may have one of the following conditions: midface deficiency and/or mandibular hypertrophy/prognathism. If modification of the skeletal Class III growth pattern is not effectively accomplished at an early age via maxillary protraction, then orthognathic surgery would be required to help correct the skeletal Class III malocclusion. Some of the more serious risks associated with orthognathic surgery include parasthesia, bone and tissue necrosis, and possibly death. However, if one is able to effectively protract the maxilla, the need for anterior-posterior correction of the maxilla via orthognathic surgery will be minimized if not eliminated.;The purpose …

The sample stimulus was followed by a retention interval during which all keys were dark, and then by comparison stimuli on the side keys. A response to the comparison stimulus that matched the sample …

Empirical Essays On Financial Market Linkages In Macroeconomics, Ellis B. Heath Jan 2009

Empirical Essays On Financial Market Linkages In Macroeconomics, Ellis B. Heath

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation highlights the effects of monetary and fiscal policy on financial markets both within and across borders. In the first essay I examine how credit affects both real GDP and inflation in the U.S. Without a well-functioning credit market, at least two principal components of GDP---consumer durables and investment---would suffer. Credit markets allow individuals and firms to match those with extra savings and those with more pressing spending and investing needs to mutually benefit each other. However, credit markets are diverse. Clearly, some credit variables would be expected to play a more important role in the macroeconomy than others. …
